Pakistan: Imran’s security chief arrested on ‘money-laundering’ charges

    [ad_1]

Islamabad: Pakistans Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has confirmed arresting Iftikhar Rasool Ghumman, who is the security in-charge of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a “money-laundering case”, media reports said on Thursday.

The Anti-Money Laundering Cell (AMLC) of the agency busted an internally active racket involved in the illegal business of money-laundering based out of Lahore and arrested two members of the gang, the FIA said, The News reported.

According to the FIA officials, Ghumman was running a fake international money-laundering network along with Qaisar Mushtaq and Asim Hussain, the report said.

    MS Education Academy

The officials said the entire network has been exposed and the people engaged in money laundering through ‘hundi’ and ‘hawala’ have been rounded up, adding that the racket was involved in transferring billions of rupees to different countries through illegal ways.

They added that the racket was using more than 40 fake companies for transferring money to other countries.

Rejecting the FIA allegations, sources in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said Ghumman is a credible party leader who ran established international business in different countries, and that he was authorised to take care of the imports and exports on behalf of the party, The News reported.

Condemning the arrest, PTI chief Imran Khan alleged that people close to him are being harassed, abducted and tortured.

In a series of tweets, Khan said: “Today, my security in-charge Iftikhar Ghumman has been abducted. This is all part of the London Plan where Nawaz Sharif was given assurances that PTI would be crushed.”

“So now people close to me, along with my leadership, are being harassed, abducted, tortured and confronted with sham cases across Pakistan in total violation of the Constitution and rule of law,” the former premier added.

2020 Delhi riots: Court acquits father-son duo of rioting, arson charges in 2 cases

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A court here has acquitted a father-son duo of the charges of rioting and arson during the 2020 North East Delhi communal conflagration, saying there was no incriminating evidence against them.

Additional Sessions Judge Pulastya Pramachala was hearing two cases pertaining to the 2020 riots based on three complaints against Mithhan Singh and his son Jony Kumar.

According to the prosecution, the duo was part of a riotous mob that set ablaze houses, including those of the complainants, after identifying the properties of people from a particular community, in lane number 29 of Khajuri Khas on February 25.

“…Both both accused are hereby acquitted of all the charges levelled against them in this case,” ASJ Pramachala said in the judgments passed on Monday.

In both orders, the judge noted citing prosecution witnesses that though the presence of an unlawful assembly which engaged in rioting, vandalism and arson was established, they did not identify the duo.

“Hence, it was realised that there was no incriminating evidence at all against both the accused persons, so as to seek any explanation from them,” the judge said.

The Khajuri Khas police station had filed charge sheets against the two for various offences under the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc.

Report: Russia charges Journal reporter with espionage

    [ad_1]

    aptopix russia reporter arrested 37695

In the Russian legal system, the filing of charges and a response from the accused represent the formal start of a criminal probe, initiating what could be a long and secretive Russian judicial process.

Tass quoted its source as saying: “The FSB investigation charged Gershkovich with espionage in the interests of his country. He categorically denied all accusations and stated that he was engaged in journalistic activities in Russia.”

The source declined further comment because the case is considered secret.

Russian authorities arrested Gershkovich, 31, in Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city, on March 29. He is the first U.S. correspondent since the Cold War to be detained for alleged spying.

The FSB specifically accused Gershkovich of trying to obtain classified information about a Russian arms factory. The Wall Street Journal has denied the accusations.

The case has caused an international uproar.

In a rare U.S. bipartisan statement, the Senate’s top two leaders demanded Friday that Russia immediately release Gershkovich. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. declared that “journalism is not a crime” and praised Gershkovich as an “internationally known and respected independent journalist.”

On Thursday, the U.S ambassador to Russia and a top Russian diplomat met to discuss the case.

In the meeting with U.S. Ambassador Lynne T. Tracy, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stressed “the serious nature of the charges” against Gershkovich, according to a Russian Foreign Ministry statement.

The statement repeated earlier Russian claims that the reporter “was caught red-handed while trying to obtain secret information, using his journalistic status as a cover for illegal actions.”

Lawyers representing Gershkovich met with him Tuesday for the first time since his detention, according to Wall Street Journal. Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker.

Tucker said the reporter is in good health and “is grateful for the outpouring of support from around the world. We continue to call for his immediate release.”

Gershkovich was ordered held behind bars for two months in Russia pending an investigation. A Moscow court said Monday that it had received a defense appeal of his arrest; the appeal is scheduled to be heard on April 18, Russian news agencies reported.

Businessman kidnapping case: Charges framed against Atiq Ahmad, son, 15 others

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: A special court here on Friday framed charges against gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, his son Umar Ahmad and 15 others in connection with the kidnapping of businessman Mohit Jaiswal in 2018.

Special court judge Ajai Vikram Singh directed the prosecuting agency CBI to produce its witnesses before it on April 17.

Atiq was produced in the court through video conferencing. The remaining accused were present in the court.

    MS Education Academy

According to the prosecution, the FIR in the matter was registered at Krishna Nagar police station on December 28, 2018 based on a complaint filed by businessman Jaiswal.

It was alleged that Atiq Ahmad, while in jail, got him kidnapped through his associates from his office at Gomtinagar. Later, he was taken to Deoria jail where Atiq Ahmad got him assaulted, obtained his signature on a blank paper and then grabbed his property worth Rs 45 crore.

Following the Supreme Court’s directions, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took up the investigation in the case on June 12, 2019.

In the course of its investigation, the CBI had filed four separate charge sheets.

Recently, an MP-MLA court of Prayagraj had held gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and two others guilty in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case and sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for life.

This was the first conviction of Ahmad who faces more than 100 cases. A former Samajwadi Party (SP) MP, Ahmad is currently lodged in Sabarmati jail in Gujarat.

  • Defiant Donald Trump pleads not guilty to all 34 criminal charges against him

Defiant Donald Trump pleads not guilty to all 34 criminal charges against him

    [ad_1]

New York: Donald Trump, the first former US President to be criminally charged, has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records at his arraignment in a Manhattan court on charges relating to hush money payments made to a porn star before the 2016 presidential election.

The 76-year-old former president was arrested when he arrived to surrender at the Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday.

Trump, who became the first former US president to be indicted, arrested and arraigned on criminal charges, pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal charges of falsifying business records in person before State Supreme Court Justice Juan M Merchan.

    MS Education Academy

Wearing a dark blue suit and red tie, a stone-faced Trump walked into the tightly-guarded courtroom with his steps heavy and slow and said “not guilty” in a firm voice while facing the judge.

He sat silently throughout almost the entire proceedings and only spoke when he was required to, either by pleading not guilty or by answering to the judge when addressed directly.

Speaking outside court after the arraignment, Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche said that his client is “frustrated” and “upset.” He accused the prosecutor of turning a “completely political issue” into a “political prosecution.” On the charges against Trump, Blanche said: “we’re going to fight it, fight it hard.” The historic indictment against Trump, was unsealed on Tuesday, providing the public and Trump’s legal team with details about the charges against him for the first time.

It includes charges of falsifying business records in connection with a hush payment that Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels shortly before the 2016 presidential election.

Prosecutors alleged Trump was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, including an illegal payment of USD 130,000 that was ordered by the defendant to suppress the negative information that would hurt his presidential campaign.

The reason he committed the crime of falsifying business records was in part to “promote his candidacy,” the indictment alleges.

Trump hid reimbursement payments to Cohen by marking monthly checks for “legal services,” according to the statement of facts, in a deal the two worked out in the Oval Office.

The payments stopped after December 2017, according to the document.

Trump has denied all wrongdoings in connection with the payments made to 44-year-old Daniels.

Trump left the Manhattan courtroom after his arraignment on Tuesday without making any statement.

The next in-person hearing date for Trump’s case is set for December 4 in New York, roughly two months before the official start of the 2024 Republican presidential primary calendar.

Trump flew back back to his Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, where he addressed a crowd in a roughly 25-minute speech.

He repeated many of his campaign talking points and argued that he has been the victim of a Democratic conspiracy to tank his re-election bid.

Trump said he “never thought anything like this could happen in America” on Tuesday night after he was arraigned in a New York courtroom.

“It’s an insult to our country,” he said.

“The only crime that I have committed is to fearlessly defend our nation from those who seek to destroy it,” Trump said.

He criticised the indictment levelled against him, saying he is “going through a fake investigation” that “turned out to be a sham.” “Let me be as clear as possible: I am Innocent. The only offense I have committed is to defend America from those who seek to destroy it. What we’ve witnessed is election interference in the highest order,” he said.

“Let me assure you – I have never been more determined than I am right now. They will not beat me. They will not break me. They will not stop me from fighting to save this country. The more they try to frame me, slander me, and destroy me, the stronger my resolve to complete our mission,” Trump said.

He did not even spare the judge Juan Merchan who is overseeing his case.

The former president alleged that he is a “Trump hating judge” with the “Trump hating wife” and family “whose daughter works for Kamala house and now receives money from the Biden Harris campaign”.

Trump’s speech came after the judge did not place a gag order on him but warned him that the issue would be revisited if the ex-president continued with his heated rhetoric about the case.

A gag order would have prohibited Trump, his attorneys, other parties and witnesses from speaking about the case publicly.

The former president earlier arrived at the specially secured Manhattan courthouse in an eight-car motorcade. He was arrested as he arrived at the court.

Shortly after Trump was put under arrest, his campaign released a mugshot picture of him on a T-shirt saying not guilty.

President Joe Biden did not respond to questions from reporters when asked about Trump’s arraignment.

Trump is currently the front-runner among all declared and potential contenders for the 2024 Republican White House nomination. But there is nothing in US law that prevents a candidate who is found guilty of a crime from campaigning for and serving as president — even from prison.

Trump was twice impeached by the House of Representatives. He was acquitted by the Senate both times.

Hours before his arraignment, Trump sent an email to his supporters, which he claimed was the last one before his arrest, saying that the United States is becoming a “Marxist Third World” country and took to social media to question the fairness of the judiciary.

“My last email before my arrest,” Trump said in the subject line of the email.

The indictment was quickly criticised by Trump’s Republican allies.

“Trump is a textbook on positive thinking, he can convert any grave situation against him, to his best possible advantage. He will convert this week’s New York case, as a stepping stone to win back the White House in 2024,” Al Mason, a die-hard supporter of the former president, said in a statement.

Since news of his indictment first broke, the Trump campaign has raised millions and his poll numbers are skyrocketing, he said.

“God is with President Trump. He is a very good man. He will emerge even stronger after his arraignment today. In fact, this arrest of Trump is a blessing in disguise for Trump,” Mason said.

Trump decries charges against him as an ‘insult to our country’

    [ad_1]

Trump went after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, describing him as a “criminal,” a “radical left” prosecutor and a “failed district attorney,” while calling for him to be prosecuted.

“The criminal is the district attorney, because he illegally leaked massive amounts of grand jury information, for which he should be prosecuted, or at a minimum, he should resign,” Trump said.

The former president used his speech not only to denounce the indictment that was brought against him Tuesday, but also to decry several other past and ongoing investigations into him, including his two impeachment proceedings, accusations of fraud levied against him by New York Attorney General Tish James and the investigation into the classified documents he had stored at Mar-a-Lago.

The speech came after the state judge presiding over the arraignment, acting Justice Juan Merchan, decided against imposing a gag order on the former president, while warning against making statements that “incite violence or create civil unrest.”

Hundreds were in attendance at Trump’s Florida estate on Tuesday night, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake and three of Trump’s children, Don Jr., Eric and Tiffany.

Trump has maintained his innocence throughout the investigation and has denied the affair with porn star Stormy Daniels, as well as another alleged affair with Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model.

On Truth Social, his social media outlet, the former president has also repeatedly attacked Bragg, calling the prosecutor, who is Black, an “animal” and describing the indictment as “political persecution” and “election interference.”

When news of the indictment first broke on Thursday, the former president was quick to denounce the case as a “witch hunt.”

“This is Political Persecution and Election Interference at the highest level in history,” Trump wrote in a statement shortly after the grand jury voted to bring criminal charges against him. “The Democrats have lied, cheated and stolen in their obsession with trying to ‘Get Trump,’ but now they’ve done the unthinkable — indicting a completely innocent person in an act of blatant Election Interference.”

In the weeks leading up to the indictment, Trump knocked the investigation — at one point wrongly predicting the imminence of his arrest, and calling on his supporters to protest and “take our nation back” in a post on Truth Social.
