Telangana Congress in charge rules out alliance with BRS

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Congress incharge for Telangana, Manikrao Thakre on Tuesday ruled out any alliance with the state’s ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

Hours after Congress MP Komatireddy Venkat Reddy’s remarks created a storm in the party, the central leader made the clarification on his arrival in Hyderabad.

At the airport lounge, Venkat Reddy, AICC secretaries Nadeem Javeed, Bose Raju, Venugopal and others called on Thakare. Venkat Reddy is understood to have clarified his remarks.

Later talking to reporters, Thakare said that Congress will get majority on its own and it will not require alliance with anybody.

“I have not seen what Venkat Reddy said. I will react after going through what he said,” the Congress incharge said. He made it clear that the Congress is committed to the statement made by party leader Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Telangana, ruling out an alliance with BRS.

Earlier in the day, Venkat Reddy, Congress MP from Bhuvanagiri constituency, triggered a storm in the party with his prediction that Telangana Assembly elections will throw a hung house. He made the forecast that no party will secure 60 seats in the 119-member Assembly.

The MP also stated that since Congress is a secular party, the BRS will have to enter into an alliance with it after the elections.

Venkat Reddy’s remarks evoked strong reaction from several leaders in the party. They reiterated that Congress will not have any alliance with the BRS. Condemning the MP’s remarks, Addanki Dayakar, Mahesh Kumar Goud and other leaders also exuded confidence that Congress will secure a majority on its own.

They criticised Venkat Reddy for creating confusion among party ranks with his comments about alliances.

However, Venkat Reddy denied that his remarks were against the party’s stand. He alleged that some people were creating unnecessary controversy. He said on the basis of surveys in social media, he made a forecast that there will be a hung Assembly.

  • FM rejects ‘green Budget for Adani’ charge; says allocation not biased

FM rejects ‘green Budget for Adani’ charge; says allocation not biased

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday rejected Opposition charges of the Budget allocations for green and clean energy being made keeping the Adani Group in mind, saying it might be Congress culture to give benefits to ‘jijas’ and ‘bhatijas’ but not of the Modi government.

Sitharaman had in Budget 2023-24 provided Rs 35,000 crore for clean energy transition — a space where the Adani Group has announced massive projects ranging from renewable energy capacity to green hydrogen production. Such allocation has been tagged ‘green growth’ budget and the Opposition punned it to imply it was meant for Adani Group firms such as Adani Green Energy Ltd.

” … kyun ki mera naam le kar ek vipaksh ke neta bole, kya Nirmala Sitharaman ne green mei itna amount allot kiya, kya itna amount kisiko mann mei rakhte hue allot kiya? (Because one Opposition leader took my name and said, did Nirmala Sitharaman allocate so much amount to green sector keeping in mind a particular individual?)

“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi government, any allocation is not made keeping anyone specific in mind, rather by keeping everyone in mind. The government keeps country in mind. Such kind of remarks is absolutely wrong…,” the minister said without naming any company or individual.

She was replying to the general discussion on the Union Budget in the Lok Sabha.

Proceedings of Parliament have been disrupted by Opposition parties demanding a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee or a Supreme Court monitored enquiry into allegations of financial fraud made by US-based Hindenburg Research against the Adani Group.

While participating in the debate, Congress’ Leader of the House Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury sought an explanation from the Finance Minister on how can investors have confidence when the market capitalisation of one of the richest persons in the world eroded by 47 per cent following allegations of accounting fraud and stock price manipulation.

Without naming the Congress, Sitharaman said there were times when phone calls were made to banks for giving loans to benefit certain people.

“…if phone calls were made, if relations were given benefit, if jijajis and bhatijas (brothers-in law and nephews) were given benefit, it might be their culture,” she said in an apparent dig at the Gandhi family.

“Under Prime Minister Modi, none of us do any of that. And therefore, any such allegation will be given back in the same language. I’m sorry…I can’t afford to have this kind of language,” Sitharaman said.

There were allegations that systems were bypassed to provide bank loans to people associated with the Congress party leadership during the UPA regime (2004-2014). The Congress party has rejected such allegations.

Sitharaman also said during earlier Congress regimes, there were massacres and cited examples of Nellie in Assam and the anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. She also accused the then Congress party government for brutally suppressing Sadhus protesting cow slaughter in Delhi in 1966.

“Who will answer for these,” she said, adding the Modi government was not against any community and does not believe in vote bank politics.

Uttarakhand: Magisterial inquiry ordered in lathi charge incident on youth protesters

    [ad_1]

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Thursday ordered for detailed magisterial inquiry into the alleged lathi charge incident by the police on the youngsters who were demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the recruitment scams in the state.

“The Chief Minister has directed the Chief Secretary for a detailed magisterial inquiry into the law and order situation and the entire sequence of lathi charge,” a statement from the CM office said.

“After checking all the facts and circumstances, the inquiry officer will make the detailed inquiry report available to the government,” it added.

The Uttarakhand police used a baton charge on the youngsters who were demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the recruitment scams in the state after stones were allegedly pelted at them during a massive protest in Dehradun on Thursday, police said.

Dehradun DIG while taking note of the matter said that an investigation is underway into the matter.

He also said that some “outside elements” entered the protest to vitiate the atmosphere.

Some outside elements entered the protest to vitiate the atmosphere. Stone pelting was done and police vehicles were damaged while many personnel were injured. An effort is underway to identify the accused. Probe underway,” he further said.

However, police personnel also detained several protestors during the demonstration.

Meanwhile, hitting out at the Dhami government, former Chief Minister of state Harish Rawat said that the lathi charge by the police on the students was “unfortunate”.

“Students are demanding a robust exam system. Already there is a lack of jobs due to the BJP government, then paper gets leaked and cancelled. When students were protesting they were lathi-charged which is unfortunate,” Rawat said.

He also said that CM Dhami should speak with the students.

The government is facing sharp criticism after several exams were cancelled due to the leakage of the examination papers.

The recent UKPSC paper leak which resulted in the Patwari Lekhpal exam being cancelled for around 1.4 lakh candidates.

Uttarakhand recently faced a major paper leak case in December.

The case pertains to a written exam conducted by the UKSSSC in December 2021.

It was one of the major examinations conducted by the commission for 854 posts across 13 departments.

However, there were widespread allegations of irregularities in the conduct of the test. Following these allegations, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami called for a probe and strict action against those guilty.

Following this, the secretary of the commission was removed from the post. A Special Task Force (STF) was also constituted to investigate the alleged irregularities.

After the Uttarakhand State Subordinate Service Selection Commission was caught up in a paper leak case, the government asked the Uttarakhand Public Service Commission to conduct recruitment exams.

However, UKPSC officials were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the UKPSC Paper leak for the Patwari Lekhpal exam, which was conducted on January 8, 2023. As of now, a total of four people have been arrested in the case.

A case has been registered against nine people at Haridwar’s Kankhal police station on Friday after an investigation by Police’s Special Investigating Team (SIT) for the irregularities in AE/JE exam under Uttarakhand Public Services Examination (UKPSE), as informed by Uttarakhand CMO.

However, the CM on Thursday said that he approved an ordinance to bring the country’s strictest “anti-cheating law”.

“As a promise to the youth, our government has decided to bring the strictest anti-cheating law of the country. I have approved the Ordinance in this regard and sent for further action,” he wrote in a tweet in Hindi.

Twitter to charge $100 from developers for access to basic API

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: A week after Twitter announced shutting down free access to the API, the microblogging platform on Thursday said that it will charge $100 per month for the basic tier of API (Application Programming Interface).

Initially, the company had planned to shut down free access to its API on February 9, but now it has extended the deadline to February 13.

The company shared the information on Twitter via its Twitter Dev account, saying: “We’re excited to announce an extension of the current free Twitter API access through February 13.”

“Paid basic access that offers low level of API usage, and access to Ads API for a $100 monthly fee.”

Moreover, the company said that on February 13, it will depreciate the premium API, which was part of v1.1.

“Also on February 13, we will deprecate the Premium API. If you’re subscribed to Premium, you can apply for Enterprise to continue using these endpoints,” it tweeted.

  • Assam drive against child marriage: 2,528 held; DGP says filing charge sheets major challenge

Assam drive against child marriage: 2,528 held; DGP says filing charge sheets major challenge

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: As the total number of arrests in the continued drive against child marriage in Assam reached 2,528 on Tuesday, the DGP said the biggest challenge for the force now is filing charge sheets within the stipulated timeframe.

The police during the day arrested 87 more people in the crackdown, which started on Friday.

“Crackdown continues. Total arrest so far 2528,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet.

Protests against the arrests by women activists were reported during the day from Silchar in Cachar district. Four of them were arrested and released on personal bond, police said.

The Director General of Police (DGP) G P Singh said that the biggest challenge for the police is now to file charge sheets within a 60 to 90 days period.

Singh said that the police did not aim to harass anybody but its role was to stop child marriage completely in the state by the next two to three years.

“We have registered 4,074 cases and over 2,500 people have been arrested till this morning. All the accused in these cases have been identified and they will be arrested and charge sheets filed against them,” Singh told PTI.

On the 65 accused people already securing bail, the DGP said the focus is on ensuring that charge sheets are filed within the stipulated time frame.

“Bail is okay. To me, it is not important who stays in jail for how long. It is important that they have to be charge-sheeted and they face the music of law,” he asserted.

Chairperson of Assam State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (ASCPCR) Sunita Changkakoti told PTI that the crackdown was a much-awaited move and it will send a strong message to the society against this menace.

“We have been campaigning against child marriage for long and hold regular district review meetings in which we involve all stakeholders, including government departments like the health and education and NGOs. A concerted effort by all sections of society can help in ending the problem,” she said.

The Assam police had launched the crackdown on child marriage on Friday with over 2,000 arrested within the first two days.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had earlier asserted that the drive will continue till the 2026 Assembly election.

Justifying the crackdown, Sarma had pointed out that teenage pregnancy accounted for nearly 17 per cent of over 6.2 lakh pregnant women last year in the state.

The opposition parties have criticised the manner in which it is being carried out, terming the arrests of teenage husbands and family members as “abuse of law” for political gain and equating the police action with “terrorising people”.

The state cabinet had recently approved a proposal to book men who have married girls below 14 years of age under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO).

Cases under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 will be registered against those who have married girls in the age group of 14-18 years, the cabinet had decided.

The offenders will be arrested and the marriages declared illegal.

Assam has a high rate of maternal and infant mortality, with child marriage being the primary cause as an average of 31 per cent of marriages registered in the state are in the prohibited age, according to reports of the National Family Health Survey.

Of the 4,004 cases of child marriage registered recently, the highest was reported in Dhubri (370), followed by Hojai (255), Udalguri (235), Morigaon (224) and Kokrajhar (204).

  • Chopped Shraddha’s body into more than 17 pieces, Aftab confessed: Charge sheet

Chopped Shraddha’s body into more than 17 pieces, Aftab confessed: Charge sheet

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aftab Amin Poonawala, who accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar, had chopped her body into more than 17 pieces, as per his confession, the charge sheet filed by police in Saket court said.

According to the charge sheet, after killing Shraddha on May 18 last year, Poonawalla locked their rented accommodation at south Delhi’s Chattarpur Pahari area at about 7.45 p.m and went to a nearby hardware shop where he bought a saw, three blades, a hammer and plastic clip.

“Thereafter I came back to the flat and shifted Shraddha’s body into the bathroom where I cut her hands from the wrist with the help of the saw and kept them in white polythene… while cutting her wrist I also got minor cut on my left hand with saw,” read his second statement given to investigators after he tried to mislead police.

“I placed the polythene containing both hands of Shraddha in the lower cabinet of the kitchen under the water tank,” he told investigators.

Next day on May 19, 2022, Poonawalla bought a refrigerator for Rs 25,000, and the shopkeeper sent it to his address by evening of the same day.

“I had bought a fridge on May 19 (a day after Shraddha was killed) so that I may keep the remaining body parts of Shraddha in the refrigerator to prevent stench and decomposition,” he confessed.

In the intervening night of May 19-20, 2022, he, at about 2 a.m., first disposed off the body’s thigh in the jungle of Chattarpur Pahari situated at Mehrauli-Gurugram road near a red light.

“Over the next 4-5 days, I cut her body into 17 pieces – hands into six pieces, legs into six pieces, head, torso, two pieces of pelvic part and thumbs. I used to dispose of the body parts one by one as per my convenience,” Poonawalla confessed.

He packed some of the body parts in a trash bag and kept the others in the freezer. To clean up the blood, he bought toilet cleaner, bleach, handwash, and other items from a shopping app Blinkit.

The chargesheet states that soon after killing Walkar, he came in contact with a girl through dating app Bumble and she even visited his flat and stayed at night several times.

“Whenever she used to visit my flat, I used to clean the refrigerator and used to put body parts of Sharddha in the lower cabinet of the kitchen,” Poonawalla told police.

After her departure, he used to return the remaining body parts – the head, torso, both forearms – in the refrigerator.

Even after killing Walkar and dating a girl, Poonawalla kept on using Walkar’s Instagram account which was logged onto from his phone. He texted her friend Laxman, posing as Walkar.

“On the day of the murder, I transferred Rs 54,000 from her mobile phone to my account twice. After that, I went to Mumbai in the first week of June to collect the goods from my rented house in Vasai. I came back to Delhi. When I was called by the Maharashtra Police to inquire about Shraddha, I dumped her phone,” he stated in his confession.

On January 24, the police had filed the charge sheet in the case which contains over 6,000 pages.

On Tuesday, after taking cognisance of the charge sheet, the court posted the case for its scrutiny on February 21.

Shraddha Walkar murder: Delhi court takes cognisance of charge sheet, scrutiny on Feb 21

    [ad_1]

Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday took cognisance of the charge sheet filed by Delhi Police against Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar and then chopping her body into several pieces.

On January 24, the police had filed the charge sheet in the case which contains over 6,000 pages and the court had extended Poonawala’s custody for 14 days.

After taking cognisance of the charge sheet, the court posted the matter for its scrutiny on February 21.

According to sources, the charge sheet was prepared on the basis of forensic and electronic evidence, and has around 100 witnesses.

Poonawala has been accused of killing Walkar and then chopping her body into several pieces and storing them in a refrigerator before disposing of them in the Chhatarpur forest area over a period of three months.

During the last hearing when Poonawala was produced before the court through video conferencing before Metropolitan Magistrate Aviral Shukla, he had contended that he wanted to change his lawyer.

Poonawala had demanded law books to study. The court had also directed the prison authorities to provide him with warm clothes.

On January 6, Poonawala had moved an application in the court seeking release of his debit and credit cards, citing the need for funds to purchase day-to-day items, as well as warm clothes.

Poonawala’s application was moved through his advocate seeking to release funds from his bank account citing that he did not have enough warm clothes to counter the winter chill inside the prison.

  • Cong seeks Kejriwal’s resignation after ED charge sheet against him in liquor scam

Cong seeks Kejriwal’s resignation after ED charge sheet against him in liquor scam

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday demanded that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal should resign as it said he has no moral right to be in office as the Enforcement Directorate has ‘clearly indicted’ him in the excise scam.

Congress leader and former Union minister Ajay Maken said a Rs 100 crore kickback has been established against Kejriwal and his ministers in the scam, and a PMLA court took cognizance of the charge sheet on Thursday and allowed that charges be framed against all the accused.

“The Indian National Congress demands the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with the indicted ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain,” Maken told reporters here, adding that they have no moral right to continue in office.

He said the money trail has also been mentioned in the charge sheet, leading to advertisements in Goa elections and cash payments to volunteers to carry out surveys.

Maken said a DANICS officer has claimed that the GOM report for a 12 percent margin for wholesalers of liquor trade was handed over to him at Kejriwal’s residence, where Sisodia and Jain were also present.

It is alleged that this report was handed over to him without any discussions, he claimed.

“From this 12 percent margin to the wholesalers, 6 percent is alleged to be paid back as a kickback,” Maken claimed.

He also alleged that the concessions by the Kejriwal government to liquor traders further caused loss to the exchequer, which include Rs 144.36 crore waived off from liquor license fee on account of COVID-19.

Besides, he said Rs 30 crore EMD (earnest money deposit) for Airport L-1 was returned and margin of profits increased from 5 to 12 percent. Still, a 10 percent enhancement from the licensee was not charged, he said.

The former Delhi Congress chief also said, “Delhi asks Kejriwal… Where is Lokpal?”.

Maken said one sees a ‘Kejriwal versus Delhi L-G’ every day in special sessions of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, in courts, on streets, and on trivial issues.

“But have we ever seen Kejriwal or the AAP protesting for Lokpal? In 2014, Kejriwal asked for the dissolution of the Delhi Assembly in favor of passing the Lokpal Bill. Where is that Bill now?” he asked.

“The Kejriwal government has ensured that even a weak Lokayukta is non-functional in Delhi,” the Congress leader alleged.

He claimed that despite being approved by the Lieutenant Governor, annual reports of the Lokayukta have not been tabled in the House since 2017-18.

Despite being approved by the L-G, the Lokayukta faces huge constraints of manpower and functionaries, Maken said, adding that the key post of Director of Investigation in the office of Lokayukta has not been filled.

“Ever since Kejriwal came to power, the Lokayaukta, in its reports, has been flagging various debilitating constraints being faced by it in terms of its independence, lack of powers, compromised financial autonomy, or non-availability of any machinery for conducting investigations, but all in vain,” he told media.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed, in its supplementary charge sheet, filed in the court that a part of the alleged Rs 100 crore “kickbacks” generated in the scrapped Delhi excise policy was used in the AAP’s 2022 Goa assembly election campaign.

It has also claimed that a close aide of the Delhi chief minister arranged a video call through FaceTime (a video calling facility on iPhone) on his phone for one of the accused Sameer Mahandru.

In the call, Kejriwal told Mahandru that the aide is “his boy” and he should trust him and carry on with him, the ED has claimed.

Kejriwal has dismissed the charge sheet, alleging that cases filed by the agency are “fake” and are used to “topple” governments and buy MLAs at the behest of the Centre.
