New Zealand appoints ministers in charge of cyclone response

    [ad_1]

Wellington: A Cabinet committee and regional ministerial leads were appointed on Tuesday to help coordinate New Zealand’s response and recovery from cyclone Gabrielle which lashed the North Island over the past week.

The new Extreme Weather Recovery Committee will be chaired by Finance Minister Grant Robertson as Minister for Cyclone Recovery, with Barbara Edmonds as deputy, while Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty will also be members, reports Xinhua news agency.

“The government is fully aware of the scale of the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle and that the rebuild will come with a multi-billion dollar price tag,” Hipkins said.

The cyclone has left 11 people dead and more than 3,200 people uncontactable.

The government has provided an initial support package of NZ$50 million for businesses, farmers and growers, as well as injecting an extra NZ$250 million to help local councils fix roads, get transport links back up and access into communities, Hipkins said.

“But recovery is going to take a long time, so the Committee will help steer the work needed over the coming weeks and months to get affected regions back up and running again,” he said.

Ministers, in place for each affected region, will work directly with local councils on the local response and ensure local voices are heard and acted on, he added.

More fatalities still remain possible, said the prime minister, adding that the government discussed initial recovery plans on Monday, with the cost of the recovery estimated to be about NZ$13 billion.

New Zealand’s resilience is being tested like never before, Hipkins said.

“Lives have been turned upside down… Many people have seen their homes and all of their possessions completely destroyed. Countless others have been displaced,” he said.

About 10,000 people have been displaced by the adverse event, the level of which New Zealand has not seen since the Christchurch earthquake in February 2011, the authorities said.

New Zealand declared state of emergency on February 13, the third time in the country’s history, followed by widespread power outages, flight cancellations and school closures in the North Island.

It is only two weeks after Auckland and the adjacent region Waikato were inundated by record downpours and floods.

Four people were killed in the previous disaster three weeks ago, mainly in Auckland, the country’s largest city.

Case against Sanjay Raut on charge of making derogatory remarks against Maha CM Shinde

    [ad_1]

Nashik: Nashik Police have registered a case against Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, an official said on Monday.

Shinde faction officer-bearer Yogesh Beldar lodged a complaint at Panchavati police station here late Sunday night, alleging that during an interaction with a TV channel, Raut used derogatory words against CM Shinde and maligned his image, he said.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against Raut under Indian Penal Code Section 500 (defamation), the official said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, during his visit to Pune on Saturday, said those who chose to “lick the soles” of people with opposite ideologies have found which side truth was on after the Election Commission declared the faction headed by CM Eknath Shinde as the real Shiv Sena and gave it the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol.

When asked about Shah’s remark, Rajya Sabha member Raut on Sunday said, “What is the present chief minister licking? Maharashtra doesn’t give importance to what Shah says.”

Raut in a tweet on Sunday also claimed that a “deal of Rs 2000 crore” has taken place so far to “purchase” the Shiv Sena party name and its ‘bow and arrow’ symbol, a charge dismissed by the Shinde faction and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

  • Mundra Port Narcotics Seizure Case: NIA files 2nd Supplementary charge sheet

Mundra Port Narcotics Seizure Case: NIA files 2nd Supplementary charge sheet

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday filed its second supplementary charge sheet before a special court in Ahmedabad in connection with a case pertaining to seizure of 2988.210 Kgs of heroin at Mundra Port, Gujarat.

According to an official, the said consignment was sent from Afghanistan via Bandar Abbas, Iran.

Initially, the case was registered by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and later, the probe was taken over by the NIA on October 6, 2021.

In March 2022, the NIA filed a charge sheet against 16 accused. After this, a supplementary charge sheet was filed against nine accused in August 2022.

The second supplementary charge sheet was filed against 22 accused which included private firms too.

“During further investigation, it was found that there is an organised criminal conspiracy to smuggle illegal consignments of heroin through international trade routes to India from Afghanistan, hatched by the accused. While investigating forward and backward linkages of the crime, a well-oiled network of operatives involved in the import, facilitation and transport of drug laden consignments has been uncovered.

“It has also been revealed that consignments were being imported through multiple fake/shell import proprietorship firms floated in India through multiple accused,” the NIA said.

Prime accused Harpreet Singh Talwar alias Kabir Talwar visited Dubai, UAE on multiple occasions and wilfully participated in the conspiracy for exploiting the commercial sea-route of import, in order to smuggle heroin into India in commercial quantities.

Talwar was running multiple trades in New Delhi, like clubs, retail showrooms and import firms. These firms are opened by Kabir Talwar in the names of his employees, relatives and friends, which are solely operated by him. These firms were used for importing narcotics, banned items and receiving remittances in the form of legitimate goods in lieu of his role in the smuggling cartel, the NIA said.

Over a dozen such firms have been identified and investigated, including the charge-sheeted firm, M/s Magent India. This company was used to import and receive heroin disguised as semi-processed talc stone from Afghanistan to India.

Investigations revealed that an organised network of syndicate members was being run by foreign based narcotic traders for importing the heroin laden consignments into Indian Ports (Mundra, Kolkata) and its further delivery to various warehouses located at New Delhi.

The India based network of Afghan nationals was responsible for hiring these warehouses and for extracting and distributing the heroin once it reached New Delhi.

“Investigation established that funds generated through the sale proceeds of heroin were provided to operatives of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for furtherance of terrorist activities in India,” said the NIA.

Further investigations in the matter are on.

Russia envoy accuses US of fueling Ukraine war with ‘crimes against humanity’ charge

    [ad_1]

    russia ukraine war 35225

Washington is trying to “demonize Russia” and “fuel the Ukrainian crisis” by accusing Moscow of crimes against humanity, Russian Ambassador to the U.S. Anatoly Antonov said on Sunday.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris announced Saturday that Washington has formally determined that Russia is committing crimes against humanity in Ukraine, in an address at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

In a message on the social media network Telegram, Antonov said: “We consider such insinuations as an attempt, unprecedented in terms of its cynicism, to demonize Russia in the course of a hybrid war, unleashed against us. There is no doubt that the purpose of such attacks is to justify Washington’s own actions to fuel the Ukrainian crisis,” he said.

Harris had said Russia is responsible for a “widespread and systematic attack” against Ukraine’s civilian population, committing war crimes — as the administration formally concluded last March — and illegal acts against non-combatants. She cited evidence of execution-style killings, rape, torture and forceful deportations.

The Biden administration will continue to assist Ukraine in investigating these alleged crimes, she said, pledging to hold “to account” the perpetrators and “their superiors.”

“Let us all agree: on behalf of all the victims, both known and unknown: justice must be served,” Harris added.

  • DOJ won’t charge Gaetz in sex trafficking probe, lawmaker’s office says

DOJ won’t charge Gaetz in sex trafficking probe, lawmaker’s office says

    [ad_1]

Gaetz’s congressional office on Wednesday also said that the DOJ confirmed to his attorneys that authorities have completed their probe and won’t charge Gaetz with any crime.

The news was first reported by CNN. POLITICO reported in September that the DOJ’s investigation was winding down and that prosecutors weren’t likely to file charges against Gaetz.

Officials at the DOJ declined to comment.

Speaking Wednesday night on “System Update,” a program hosted on video platform Rumble by Glenn Greenwald, Gaetz said the DOJ’s decision isn’t a surprise but is certainly welcome.

“While the two years haven’t been the most comfortable of my life, I have been very focused on my work here in Congress representing my constituents and never really looking past the task at hand,” Gaetz said.

Federal prosecutors and the FBI began investigating Gaetz in late 2020 during the Trump administration over potential sex trafficking crimes related to allegations he’d paid women for sex and traveled overseas on at least one occasion to parties attended by teenagers who were not yet 18.

Federal authorities also looked into whether Gaetz had obstructed justice due to a call Gaetz and the lawmaker’s girlfriend had with a witness. Exact details of that phone call are unknown.

Gaetz repeatedly denied having sex with anyone who was underage.

Gaetz has been a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and frequented appeared on conservative media to defend the president. His national profile grew even more this year when he was part of a group of conservative Republicans who refused to back GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy as speaker. In one notable moment, another Republican confronted Gaetz on the House floor and had to be held back by fellow members.

The investigation into Gaetz came in the aftermath of federal authorities charging Joel Greenberg, a Florida county tax collector who once was close friends with Gaetz. Greenberg was sentenced in December to 11 years in prison.

He had been charged initially with more than two dozen criminal counts, but in May 2021 he pled guilty to six — including sex trafficking and fraud — in exchange for his cooperation in multiple cases, including the probe in into Gaetz.

Greenberg’s sentencing was delayed multiple times as he cooperated with authorities.
