TSPSC chairman, secretary appear before ED in paper leak case

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: In a key development in the Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) question paper leak case, its chairman Janardhan Reddy and secretary Anitha Ramachandran on Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The ED officials were questioning the duo at ED’s regional office here. The agency is gathering information on key aspects relating to the paper leak, focusing on financial transactions. The statements of both officials will be recorded by the central agency.

Last month, the ED took up an investigation into money laundering allegations in the TSPSC question paper leak case

    MS Education Academy

The ED had earlier summoned TSPSC section officer Shankar Laxmi in connection with the probe into the alleged illegal money transactions in the paper leak scam.

Shankar Laxmi is incharge of the confidential section of TSPSC, from where the exam question papers were allegedly stolen by Praveen Kumar and Rajasekhar Reddy, the employees of TSPSC and prime accused in the case.

The ED has also questioned both Praveen Kumar and Rajasekhar Reddy in Chanchalguda Jail.

During the interrogation, the agency recorded the statements of both the accused about the money they allegedly collected from those who obtained the leaked question papers. The agency suspects that the amount they collected is involved in money laundering and is unaccounted for.

The central agency had registered a Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and took up investigation following reports and complaints about huge money changing hands.

During the questioning of the accused and others in the case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Telangana police had reportedly found illegal transactions to the tune of Rs38 lakh.

The TSPSC scam came to light on March 12 which led to the arrest of 15 accused besides the cancellation of the Group 1 preliminary examination, Assistant Engineers, AEE, and DAO exams.

Praveen Kumar, who worked as an assistant section officer at TSPSC and Rajashekar Reddy, a network admin at TSPSC, had allegedly stolen question papers of some exams from a computer in a confidential section of the Commission and sold it to other accused.

The SIT has so far arrested 19 persons in the case.

The exam paper leak case created a sensation in Telangana as opposition parties Congress and BJP blamed the BRS government for the leak that affected lakhs of unemployed in the state.

The SIT has also examined TSPS chairman Janardhan Reddy, secretary Anita Ramachandran and member B. Linga Reddy.

ABVP meets UGC chairman, demands CUET-UG ‘common counselling’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A delegation of RSS-affiliated ABVP met with University Grants Commission Chairman M Jagadesh Kumar here Saturday and demanded “common counselling” for admissions through CUET-UG.

The delegation also requested that examinations being conducted by the National Examination Agency (NTA) should only be held at “government and trusted centres”, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) said in a statement.

Nearly 14 lakh students have applied for CUET-UG this time, up by 41 per cent since last year. The CUET-UG remains the second-largest entrance exam in the country in terms of applicants. In the debut edition of the exam, 12.50 lakh students registered themselves and 9.9 lakh of them submitted their applications.

    MS Education Academy

During the meeting, the ABVP delegation led by its national general secretary Yagywalkya Shukla raised the issue of increasing financial pressure on students due to registration fees, and demanded a simplified admission process and a one-time fee for the same, the statement said.

“The ABVP has demanded that common counselling should be done under CUET like IIT and NIT. That the examinations being conducted by the National Examination Agency (NTA) should be conducted only at government and trusted centres, and the number of examination centres in the country should be increased,” it added.

In the statement, Shukla said it was necessary to ensure that the admission process was simplified and the counselling system made more convenient.

“The fee should be charged only once as per the financial convenience of the students. Along with this, every effort should be made to create transparency in the examinations. Having a common counselling process will make it easier for the students,” Shukla added.

BBC Chairman resigns after Boris Johnson loan row

    [ad_1]

London: BBC Chairman Richard Sharp resigned on Friday over a report into whether he failed to properly disclose his involvement in the facilitation of a loan to former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Barrister Adam Heppinstall was appointed by the Commissioner of Public Appointments to investigate the claims which had first appeared in the Sunday Times, says the BBC.

Confirming his resignation, Sharp said the report, which was published on Friday, found “that while I did breach the governance code for public appointments, he states that a breach does not necessarily invalidate an appointment”.

    MS Education Academy

He said the report finds he did not play “any part whatsoever in the facilitation, arrangement, or financing of a loan for the former Prime Minister”.

But he said with hindsight he should have disclosed his role in setting up a meeting between Cabinet Secretary Simon Case and Sam Blyth — a businessman who was offering the then PM financial help — to the appointments panel during the scrutiny process ahead of him taking up the senior role.

Sharp said not doing so was an “oversight” and apologised for it.

In a statement, he said he did not want to be a “distraction”, adding that it had been an honour to chair the BBC.

He will remain in post until June until a successor is appointed.

In response to his resignation, the BBC board said: “We accept and understand Richard’s decision to stand down. We want to put on record our thanks to Richard, who has been a valued and respected colleague, and a very effective chairman of the BBC.

“The BBC board believes that Richard Sharp is a person of integrity.”

The board added that Sharp had a been a “real advocate for the BBC, its mission, and why the corporation is a priceless asset for the country, at home and abroad”.

Sharp, a former banker, was appointed as Chairman of the BBC on February 10, 2021. He previously worked at JP Morgan for eight years, and then for 23 years at Goldman Sachs.

Andhra municipal chairman takes bath in front of office

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: In a novel protest over alleged corruption in Tadipatri municipality in Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district, municipal chairman J.C. Prabhakar Reddy took a bath in front of the municipal office on Tuesday.

Prabhakar Reddy, a leader of opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), sat on a chair and took a bath in front of the municipal office.

He along with TDP councilors were on a sit-in at the municipal office since Monday, demanding action against the corrupt.

    MS Education Academy

Prabhakar Reddy, a former MLA, spent the night under a tent along with other protesters.

After his bath, he continued his sit-in.

TDP leaders and workers from surrounding areas reached there to express solidarity with him.

TDP councilors on Monday launched a protest against corruption in the municipality. They alleged that the municipal commissioner and other officials were not taking any action.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. They also cooked the food at the protest camp at the municipal office.

The TDP councilors demanded that the commissioner take responsibility for the theft of diesel and tyres from the municipal office.

They alleged that the commissioner was ignoring irregularities being committed by the ruling party YSR Congress. Later, Prabhakar Reddy also joined the protesters at the camp.

Earlier, the municipal chairman was kept under house arrest when he was to stage a protest over illegal sand mining in the Penna River.

The police stopped him from leaving for Peddapur to inspect the banks of the river where sand is being illegally mined.

Prabhakar Reddy, however, managed to leave the house and sat on a road to protest the police action.

He was later detained and shifted to a police station.

  • Delhi HC permits ex-PFI chairman to withdraw plea for medical release

Delhi HC permits ex-PFI chairman to withdraw plea for medical release

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday permitted former Popular Front of India (PFI) Chairman Erappungal Abubacker to withdraw his plea seeking bail on grounds of ill health.

A division bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav allowed Abubuacker to approach the trial court for relief.

Abubacker’s counsel Adit Pujari, sought leave to withdraw the plea from the high court with the liberty to approach the trial court in view of the fact that the NIA has already filed the charge sheet in the matter.

    MS Education Academy

“Leave and liberty granted and we have not expressed any opinion on the matter,” the court said.

Counsel for National Investigation Agency (NIA) said that Abubacker cannot be released only on medical grounds and that the merit has to be argued.

Abubacker is lodged in the national capital’s Tihar jail under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case.

On March 13, the High Court directed the medical superintendent of the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) to file Abubacker’s MRI reports conducted on January 29, on or before the next date of hearing.

On February 2, the court granted time to the NIA to file a response to an application moved by Abubacker challenging the order of a special judge rejecting his bail application on medical grounds.

During the last hearing, the counsel for NIA had submitted that a medical report has been submitted by the Tihar Jail.

To this, the court responded that it is not on record. “You’ll have to place it on record. We’ll assume that the report says you’re alright! This house arrest we are not permitting,” the court had said.

Abubacker was arrested by the NIA on September 22, 2022, and charged under the provisions of the UAPA.

He has been in judicial custody since October 6, 2022. He was active in organisations like the Ideal Students League, Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).

According to Abubacker, he is suffering from multiple ailments, including a rare type of oesophagus cancer, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, diabetes, and loss of vision.

The SIT officials gathered information about the process of preparing the question papers, steps taken for their security, the procedure of conducting the exams and related matters.

  • Lulu group chairman Yusuffali dismisses reports of ED summons, calls them fake

Lulu group chairman Yusuffali dismisses reports of ED summons, calls them fake

    [ad_1]

Dubai: Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali M A on Tuesday dismissed reports of being summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the LIFE Mission case and termed them as fake.

He stated that the group would not give in to any “misinformation campaign” and may take legal action against those who spread such rumors against the group and himself.

His name came to the fore after the chat messages between Swapna Suresh and M.Sivasankar, the now jailed former principal secretary to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, got out.

Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali says his firm is a structural company

On Wednesday, he said that his firm is a structural company having thousands of employees.

In a press meeting held in Dubai, Yusuffali said, “Just ask the people who report that I got the summons and clear it. Mine is a structural company employing 65000 people. 310 crore rupees are paid as monthly salary outside India, and 25 crore rupees inside India. We have no problem with anyone saying anything. I have been in the Gulf for 50 years.”

“We have to live under the rule of law. Will proceed accordingly. Yusuff Ali is not one to run away in fear when there are problems. I will not be afraid even if some social media people accuse me day and night. I will not back down from the cause of the poor and from my business. Lulu’s legal department will look into it if legal action is required,” Yusuffali said while speaking to the media in Dubai.

    Life Mission

The bribery case pertains to Vijayan’s pet project — Life Mission flat project for the weaker sections of the society.

The Wadakkanchery project in Trissur district is mired in controversy, and the work has come to a standstill after the bribery case surfaced.

The funds for the project came from a UAE-based charity organisation — Red Crescent — and Swapna had alleged that a huge commission money had changed hands in the project. She made the allegations after the builder of the project — Santhosh Eapen — was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate.

Lulu Group Chairman Yusuffali’s name figured after it surfaced that he was also a part of the discussion about the project.
