Post your questions for Soft Cell

    [ad_1]

With their wayward yet wildly catchy synthpop, Soft Cell crafted one of the most thrilling sounds of the 80s. Hits like Tainted Love and Say Hello, Wave Goodbye have stood the test of time, but the band faded from the spotlight after their initial success. Now, as they prepare to release their fifth studio album, and the first in two decades, Marc Almond and Dave Ball will answer your questions – post them in the comments below.

After growing up in separate northern seaside towns, the pair first met as students at Leeds Polytechnic in 1977, when Almond asked Ball to soundtrack his provocative performance art. After a string of experimental covers and local shows, the duo put together their debut EP Mutant Moments at the turn of the decade, using a simple two-track recorder. But it was the release of their sleazy revamp of Gloria Jones’s Tainted Love in 1981 that propelled Soft Cell from underground misfits to mainstream success. The track became the biggest single of the year in the UK and its 43 consecutive weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart set a new record.

The band refused to conform to popular taste, though: their debut album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, which became a platinum bestseller, channelled the dark and agitated sounds of Throbbing Gristle and Suicide and explored explicit themes such as pornographic films and BDSM. Meanwhile, their outlandish performances, including a Top of the Pops appearance with Almond’s drug dealer and a banned music video for Sex Dwarf, sparked controversy.

After splitting in 1984, the duo reformed briefly in 2001 and released their fourth album Cruelty Without Beauty the following year, then disbanded again. Almond and Ball continued to pursue other musical endeavours until a 2018 reunion concert in London billed as their last ever live UK performance. But five years on they’re releasing new album Happiness Not Included, and kick off a UK tour next month.

Ahead of their return, Soft Cell will answer your questions. Maybe you’re curious about the band’s short but lively stint in the 80s, from their encounters in Leeds during its post-punk heyday to the time they met Andy Warhol in New York? Or maybe you want to know more about the new record: how does it feel to release music after so long, and what was it like making an album remotely during the pandemic?

Post your questions in the comments below by midday on Monday 1 May. Soft Cell’s answers will be published online and in our Film & Music section on Friday 5 May.

Telangana: Cops to block stolen, lost cell phones to prevent data theft

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana police personnel are now being trained to block stolen or lost mobile phones so that the data is not exploited.

The training is offered by the Department of Telecommunications, which recently launched the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) site, via which police officers at the station level may ban stolen or lost mobile phones to avoid data theft. The CEIR is a Department of Telecommunications project.

Telangana Director General of Police Anjani Kumar met with police officers receiving training for the project on Thursday. Police officers from all 746 police stations in the state will be taught the use of CEIR, and the project will be implemented following the training.

    MS Education Academy

“A user ID and password will be assigned to each police station. After logging into the CEIR, the person in charge at the police station will be able to block the number; if the device is found, it can be simply unlocked using the software,” he explained.

The DGP further said that the nature of crime has evolved throughout time, from serious felonies such as dacoity to crimes employing technology. “These days, all crimes are related to technology. Identity theft is today’s most serious crime. With stolen data, a person can create another person with the same identity,” he explained.

Additional Director General CID Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat said that 60 officers ranging in rank from constables to Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP) attended the one-day training programme on Thursday. He stated that these officers will return to their units and provide the aforementioned training to police station-level nodal officers.

Hyderabad: 2 arrested for cell phone snatching

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A habitual cell phone-snatching duo was arrested by the commissioner’s Taskforce (East) and Kachiguda police on Monday.

Accused Arfaz alias Chora, a petty vendor from Balapur, along with his associate, Chakali Karthik was arrested and five cell phones were seized from their possession.

The accused Arfaz, a school dropout, was a welding worker at Karmanghat who started committing cell phone theft owing to his habit of consuming alcohol and ganja.

    MS Education Academy

According to the police, “As a minor offender, Arfaz was sent to a juvenile home earlier, but he relapsed into the behaviour post-release.”

The duo allegedly committed theft of a motorcycle in Meerpet police limits and had been using it in committing crimes.

While Karthik rode the bike, Arfaz who was a pillion snatched the cell phones.

The accused committed five such offences, including an attention-diversion method, in the limits of Afzalgunj, Abids, Kachiguda, Meerpet and LB Nagar.

  • Howrah violence: TMC vs Guv on Raj Bhavan’s call to set up seperate monitoring cell

Howrah violence: TMC vs Guv on Raj Bhavan’s call to set up seperate monitoring cell

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress on Saturday questioned the decision of West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose to set up special cell for real time monitoring the situation at Howrah’s Shibpur- Kazipara area in wake of the clashes over a Ram Navami procession that started on Thursday and continued till Friday afternoon.

On late Friday afternoon after the Governor took a detailed report from the state chief secretary H. K. Dwivedi and the state home secretary B. P. Gopalika about the situation in the tension-prone area, a strong-worded statement was issued by the Raj Bhavan from where the decision to set up this special monitoring cell was announced.

“Governor ordered real time monitoring of the situation and constituted a special cell for the same,” the statement of Raj Bhavan read.

The statement also mentioned about “a confidential discussion to review the situation” between the Governor and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

On Saturday, Trinamool Congress’ state general secretary and the party’s spokesman in West Bengal Kunal Ghosh said that it is not clear whether the decision to set up the special monitoring cell was just a verbal announcement or there had been formal notification in the matter.

Raising doubts over whether there are legal provisions on whether such a cell can be set up by the Raj Bhavan, Ghosh also expressed apprehension that in case the said cell procures information from independent or private sources, doubts will remain whether the information received was authentic or not.

However, BJP’s state spokesman Samik Bhattacharya has justified the setting up of the special monitoring cell by the Raj Bhavan.

“As the constitutional head of the state it is the duty of the Governor to protect the democratic rights of the citizens of the state. So, he is well within his limits to order the opening up of the cell just as he sought reports of the situation from the state chief secretary and state home secretary,” Bhattacharya said.

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Bansuri Swaraj, the daughter of late Sushma Swaraj, has been appointed as co-convener of the legal cell of Delhi BJP, paving her entry into active politics.

Swaraj practices law in the Supreme Court.

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, in his first appointment in the state unit, after taking over as full-time state president of the party, appointed Swaraj as co-convener of the legal cell.

In a letter issued on Friday, Sachdeva said that Swaraj’s appointment would come into force with immediate effect and hoped that she would strengthen the BJP.

Swaraj said she was a qualified lawyer and had been helping the party in legal matters earlier as well.

“It is just that I have been formally given an opportunity to serve the party more actively in the capacity as a legal department co-convener of the Delhi BJP,” she told PTI.
