Kashmir: Eid celebrated with traditional fervour; no Eid prayers at Jamia Masjid

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across Kashmir on Saturday with traditional fervour and gaiety as the largest congregation of devotees was witnessed at the Hazratbal shrine on the banks of the Dal lake.

However, authorities did not allow Eid prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in the old city, a day after allowing Friday congregational prayers.

Hopes of Eid prayers being offered at the 14th-century mosque in the city’s Nowhatta area were raised after authorities allowed the Shab-e-Qadr and Jumatul Vida prayers.

    MS Education Academy

However, officials directed the Jamia Masjid management to conduct the Eid prayers at 7.30 am instead of 9 am.

The Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid said the prayers could not be held at 7.30 am as people had to come from far-flung areas in accordance with the schedule announced earlier.

The Eid celebrations went on smoothly elsewhere with men, women and children, dressed in their best, making a beeline to mosques, eidgahs and shrines to offer prayers.

The largest congregational prayers were held at the Hazratbal shrine where former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah was among the notable persons to offer prayers.

Large congregations for Eid prayers were also reported from other district headquarters and towns of the valley.

‘Jummat-ul-Vida’ celebrated across Kashmir with religious fervor

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: ‘Jummat-ul-Vida’ prayers, marking the last Friday of Ramzan, were offered across Kashmir including at the historic Jamia Masjid here with religious fervour, officials said.

The largest congregation was held at Jamia Masjid in the old city here, where the Jummat-ul-Vida prayers were offered after three years.

A huge number of the faithful also offered the prayers at the Hazratbal shrine, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad, on the banks of the Dal Lake, the officials said.

    MS Education Academy

The mosques and shrines across the valley witnessed a huge rush of devotees to offer the Friday congregational prayers, a day before Eid-ul-Fitr, they said.

Srinagar Police on Twitter said, ” Jummat-ul-Vida’ prayers went peacefully and smoothly in all the mosques of Srinagar district including in Hazratbal Dargah & in Jamia Masjid, Nowhatta. A huge congregation offered Friday afternoon prayers in all the mosques.”

Last Friday, congregational prayers were disallowed at the Jamia Masjid by the authorities. However, Shab-e-Qadar prayers were allowed at the grand mosque on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid, the managing body of the grand mosque, said thousands of men, women and youngsters offered the Friday prayer at the historic 14th-century mosque.

It, however, said the people were “once again disappointed over the absence of their beloved leader Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Muhammad Umar Farooq who is under house detention for the last nearly four years”.

A spokesperson of the Auqaf conveyed the Eid-ul-Fitr message of the Mirwaiz to the people and appealed to them to celebrate Eid with simplicity according to Islamic teachings.

“The Auqaf expresses strong resentment against the continuous illegal and arbitrary detention of Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir. The authorities should change their dictatorial attitude and release him before Eid,” he said.

The managing body of the mosque said the Eid prayers would be offered there on Saturday after three years.

The spokesperson said the Eid prayer will be offered at 9 am on Saturday, and urged people to reach the mosque before time and show Islamic unity and discipline on the occasion.

Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramzan, will be celebrated across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, after the Shawal Moon was not sighted on Thursday.

The Islamic calendar month is of 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the crescent.

Incessant rainfall over the past few days across the Valley dampened the festive spirit of shoppers ahead of Eid.

When will Eid ul-Fitr be celebrated in India?

Eid ul Fitr 2023 in India is expected to be celebrated on Friday, April 21, or Saturday, April 22, 2023, subject to the sighting of the moon. If the crescent moon is not seen, Ramadan will be extended for another day. However, please note that the exact date of Eid ul Fitr may vary based on the sighting of the moon, and it is always best to confirm with local authorities or your local mosque.

Meanwhile, The Ruet-i-Hilal Research Council (RHRC) has stated that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated on Saturday, 22 April across Pakistan.

Join Kashmir News WhatsApp Group (Direct Link)

The council’s Secretary-General, Khalid Ijaz Mufti, has announced that the committee’s meeting is scheduled to sight the Shawwal moon on Thursday, 20 April. However, the odds of being able to see the moon that evening are slim.

If the moon is sighted on Thursday, Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed on Friday, 21 April. Yet, according to Mufti, Eid is more likely to be celebrated on 22 April after fasting for 30 days during the holy month of Ramadan.

The moon will be born on Thursday, 20 April, at 9:13 a.m. Pakistan time, as per the council. The Mufti also stated that any reports of a crescent moon sighting on 20 April would be incorrect.

In Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the crescent Moon will have a illumination of only 0.2% just after sunset on Thursday, April 20th, making it highly unlikely to be visible for a few minutes following sunset. However, around 10 hours later, from the west coast of the U.S., it will be 1% illuminated and positioned slightly higher in the sky after sunset, increasing the likelihood of it being observed.

The following day, April 21, 2023, the crescent Moon will have an illumination of 2.4% in Mecca, and will generally be much brighter and positioned higher in the sky after sunset, making it significantly more visible around the world. As a result, Eid Al-Fitr is expected to commence on Friday, April 21, 2023.

    Traditions of Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is often called the “Festival of Breaking the Fast.” The practice of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the holy month of Ramadan (“Sawm”) is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims believe that it was during the month of Ramadan that the text of the Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims celebrate Eid Al-Fitr with prayers called “Salat Al Eid” in Arabic. There is no audible call to prayer for the Eid prayers. Muslims will gather in mosques or open spaces and offer two units of prayer – called “Rakat”. The prayers are followed by a sermon, in which the imam asks for forgiveness, mercy, and peace for every being across the world.

It’s a tradition to wear new clothes and on the way to the mosque, eat something sweet such as a date, and recite a small prayer called a takbeer.

Other key elements of the Eid celebrations are giving money to the poor (known as ‘Zakat al-Fitr’, the amount to be given depends on the possessions someone has), sending Eid greetings and feasting with families.

For many Muslims, Eid al-Fitr is a festival to show gratitude to Allah for the help and strength he gave them throughout the month of Ramadan to help them practice self-control.

The phrase commonly used by Muslims as a greeting on this day is “Eid Mubarak”, which is Arabic for ‘blessed festival’. The proper response to Eid Mubarak is “Khair Mubarak”, which wishes goodness on the person who has greeted you.

  • Baisakhi Celebrated With Religious Fervor

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: The Sikh community celebrated Baisakhi with religious fervour and traditional enthusiasm across Jammu and Kashmir on Friday  as devotees thronged different gurudwaras to offer prayers

Keeping with the tradition, the Mughal gardens Nishat and Shalimar witnessed heavy rush of visitors. Harwan and the Tulip garden also had visitors in large numbers.

Bajan Keertans were performed at Gurudawaras across Kashmir. The biggest function was held at Chatti Pathshahi, Kathi Darwaza, Rainawari here.

People also exchanged greetings with friends, neighbours and relatives. Children spent their day in parks and gardens.

Although Baisakhi is celebrated in various other northern states for a good harvest of Rabi crop, the Sikh community here celebrates the festival to mark the foundation of Khalsa Panth by the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

  • After Ram Navami clashes, Hanuman Jayanti celebrated peacefully

After Ram Navami clashes, Hanuman Jayanti celebrated peacefully

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Hanuman Jayanti celebrations passed off peacefully in West Bengal as security forces maintained a strict vigil across the state to avoid a rerun of the violence that marked the Ram Navami festival last week.

Following a Calcutta High Court order, three companies of central armed police forces were deployed in parts of Kolkata, Hooghly and Barrackpore to assist the state police in maintaining law and order during the day.

“The celebrations have been peaceful. No untoward incident happened,” a senior police official said.

    MS Education Academy

The peaceful Hanuman Jayanti celebrations in presence of central forces were in sharp contrast to the violence and arson during the Ram Navami festival in Howrah and Hooghly, sparking a fresh war of words between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP.

The saffron camp questioned the administrative capabilities of the Mamata Banerjee-led state government. The TMC, on the other hand, claimed that while the BJP leaders “fomented trouble” during Ram Navami, they behaved like “good boys” on Hanuman Jayanti on realising that the violence was backfiring politically on the party.

Governor CV Ananda Bose visited different parts of Kolkata in the morning, oversaw the security measures, and interacted with the citizens.

“People are cooperating. I think today will be a very happy day. Bengal will set the trend in peace and harmony in society,” he told reporters while visiting Ekbalpore area in south Kolkata. Earlier, he went to a Hanuman temple at Lake Town on the eastern fringe of the city and offered puja.

Bose, who had visited Rishra and Serampore areas which had witnessed violence over Ram Navami processions recently, is likely to go to Delhi on Friday, a Raj Bhavan source said.

The chief minister’s office also kept a sharp eye on the previously affected districts and top police officers constantly monitored the situation to ensure there was no untoward incident.

“The extra precautions paid off,” said a top West Bengal Police officer.

The situation in certain areas of Rishra and Serampore in Hooghly district is peaceful on Thursday. Prohibitory orders are still imposed in those areas, and internet is suspended, police said.

Senior BJP leader Locket Chatterjee sat on demonstration after the police stopped her from visiting her Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency to attend Hanuman Jayanti celebrations, citing the law and order situation following clashes between two groups during Ram Navami celebrations in the district earlier this week.

She said, “The police stopped me though I am the local MP. I was invited to attend the Hanuman Jayanti programme there. But the police are asking me to go back. Why is an elected representative stopped from visiting her constituency?”

The BJP leader told reporters that she informed the governor about the incident, and he had said he would look into it.

Videos showing a procession at Bansberia in Hooghly, in which participants were carrying arms have surfaced.

Police said one such rally was organised and 10 people were arrested on the charge of violating the Arms Act.

Senior officers of the Hooghly and Barrackpore Police Commissionerate in North 24 Parganas accompanied the central forces deployed there.

In Kolkata, the central forces were deployed in Amherst Street, Jorasanko, Park Circus, Kidderpore and port areas, an official said.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said it has organised 500 Hanuman Jayanti programmes across the state.

“All the programmes and rallies were held as per the directions given by the administration. We took out a few small rallies. No major congregation was organised,” VHP state spokesperson Sourish Mukherjee told PTI.

Special pujas were also being held at Hanuman temples across West Bengal on the occasion, a phenomenon relatively new to the state.

The BJP said it has not organised any rally, but its leaders might have participated in Hanuman Jayanti celebrations.

The peaceful celebrations also became fodder for the war of words between the TMC and the BJP.

“During Ram Navami celebrations, state police were in charge, and we have seen what had happened. The state police behaved like cadres of the ruling party, and thus the law and order situation in the state had gone for a toss last week,” BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said.

The TMC accused the BJP of fomenting trouble during the Ram Navami celebrations and behaving like “good boys” on Hanuman Jayanti.

“During Ram Navami, the BJP, VHP and their affiliates created problems by defying police directives. But today, as central forces are on the watch, they didn’t get involved in such misadventure and behaved like good boys,” TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said.

Bangladesh celebrates its Independence Day on March 26 — which is also a national holiday.

The day commemorates Bangladesh’s declaration of Independence from Pakistan in the early hours of March 25, 1971.

On the occasion, troops of the Border Security Force exchanged sweets and greetings with Border Guards Bangladesh in the border outposts along the border between the two neighbouring countries.

Days after the Pakistani forces unleashed attacks across Bangladesh, East Pakistan’s leaders vowed to win their Independence on March 26, 1971.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman then launched a guerilla war against the then Pakistani rulers.

The Liberation War later turned into a full-scale India-Pakistan War, leading to the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in Dhaka on December 16, 1971.

India was the first country to recognise Bangladesh as a sovereign nation.

According to Bangladeshi freedom fighters and experts, Pakistani forces, during the 9 months of the Liberation War (March 26 to December 16, 1971), massacred over 3 million Bengali-speaking people, including children, and raped over 6 lakh women.
