TN: Stalin moves resolution to bring Dalit Christians under Scheduled Castes

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin introduced a motion in the Assembly on Wednesday seeking to include Dalit Christians into the purview of the Scheduled Castes (SC) quota, stating that doing so will allow them to benefit from social justice in all aspects.
“This august House urges the Government of India to make necessary amendments to the Constitution to extend statutory protection, rights and concessions including reservation as provided to the people belonging to Scheduled Castes under the Indian Constitution, also to the Scheduled Castes who have converted to Christianity, so as to enable them to avail the benefits of social justice in all aspects,” the resolution moved by Stalin read, reported Deccan Herald.

The resolution comes at a time when the Union Government is opposed to granting quota privileges to Dalits who have converted to Christianity or Islam.

In December 2022, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was unwilling to execute the recommendations of the Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities that Dalits who converted to Christianity and Islam be granted quota.
The Centre has also formed a commission to investigate the subject, led by former Chief Justice of India Justice K G Balakrishnan. While Dalits who are Buddhists or Sikhs are eligible for SC reservation advantages, those who converted to Christianity or Islam are not.

Owaisi to meet Rajasthan CM to discuss reservation for backward Muslim castes

Jaipur: AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that he will meet Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to share a report, which has advocated for the reservation to 82 backward Muslim castes.
Citing the report ‘Muslims in Rajasthan’ at a press conference here, Owaisi today said that only two percent of Muslims have access to higher education and possess less land.
“I will present the economic and education status report of Muslims to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot if he gives me time. According to it, only two per cent of Muslims have access to higher education, possess less land and life expectancy is less and are malnourished. Based on the situation, 82 backward Muslim castes should get a reservation,” Owaisi told reporters here.

He said that increasing the budget for minorities from Rs 90 crore to Rs 280 crore by the state government is too little for the overall development of Muslims.
Owaisi further alleged that the report is indicating that both Congress and BJP have done nothing for minorities.
Replying to a question on the encounter of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad by the UP police, Owaisi said that he is not in favour of encounters as it weakens the rule of law.
He said that punishment should be given to the criminals as per the laws rather than doing encounters.

Bhagwat bats for unity among castes and sects

Ahmedabad: Giving the message of unity among different castes and sects, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Friday that “earlier we were one, but we created divisions in the form of castes which were widened by foreigners and for this country, we will once again have to become one”.
Addressing RSS workers here in the programme “Samaj Sakti Sangam” (confluence of social power), Bhagwat remembered Dr B R Ambedkar on his 132nd birth anniversary and said Babasaheb had said that an equality-based society (samta-yukt samaj) will only lead to the development of the country.
“Ambedkar had said that we were defeated by foreign invaders as we were divided,” Bhagwat said.

“Earlier we were one, but we created divisions of castes and such things like sects and the foreigners widened it. Now for the development of the country, we need to be one again,” he said.

TMC misleading backward castes in Bengal with fake assurances: BJP

Kolkata: Accusing the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal of misleading members of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities with “fake assurances”, BJP leader Sudip Das on Monday asked them to be “cautious” about the ruling dispensation’s game plan in future.
Das, who led a rally of backward caste members of the BJP in Esplanade, said the TMC-controlled government is only interested in appeasing the minority community, overlooking the welfare of SC, ST and OBC members.
“When it comes to delivering on the promises made to backward caste community members, including Matuas, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee always fails. Members of Dalit and general category are overlooked when it comes to hiring them for state government jobs,” he alleged.
In sharp contrast to the “double-faced policy” of the TMC regime, the BJP government at the Centre has shown its commitment to backward caste and Dalits by nominating personalities like Ramnath Kovind and Droupadi Murmu for the post of President, Das, the BJP state SC Morcha chief, said.
“There are around 2.20 crore members of various backward communities in the state with several assembly seats reserved for them. If we all get together against the injustice meted out by the state government, the hypocrite anti-Dalit TMC can be defeated,” he stated.
Das also claimed that “majority of those killed in TMC terror after the 2021 assembly poll results belonged to the backward caste”.
The rally, attended by over 500 members of SC, ST and OBC members, was also addressed by BJP MLA Ambica Roy and several other leaders belonging to the morcha.
Making light of the allegation, TMC state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said that his party gives little importance to what the BJP says.

“None should teach us ways to show respect to Matua community members. Our chairperson Mamata Banerjee has been a great admirer of Matua sect founder Harichand Thakur and ‘Baroma’ Binapani Devi.
“The TMC has always worked for the welfare of backward community members including Matuas,” he added.

UP: Dalit family gets police protection after threats from upper castes

Sambhal: A Dalit family was given protection after it sought help from the police for the wedding of their 20-year-old daughter.
The plea came after alleged restrictions were imposed by a group of upper caste men from their village for gifting a Royal Enfield motorcycle to the newlyweds.
The bride’s parents, Rishipal Valmiki and Sheela Devi, claimed that the local village head had asked them ‘not to give away gifts like upper caste families do if they want the wedding to be held smoothly.
They were also warned of “violent reprisals like stone pelting during the wedding procession”.
The bride’s mother, Sheela Devi, said, “We are the only Dalit family in the village and people in the neighbourhood firmly told us that they will not let my daughter get married because we are starting a new tradition in our community by presenting a bike as a gift. Initially, they did not raise any objection but when they saw the new motorcycle and other gifts at our house, they created a ruckus and misbehaved with guests on Monday.”
She further said, “We had to approach the police and a former minister for help. Now, we have received police protection and expect the wedding ceremony to pass off peacefully.”
Superintendent of Police, Sambhal, Chakresh Mishra, said, “Yes, we sent a police team to Ghughaiya and questioned those who threatened the family. They said that they do not have any objection with the wedding ceremony now. But we have kept a team there for the safety of guests and the family till the wedding is over.”

Take hard line against upper castes: Bihar Minister in puported video

Patna: In a purported video of a phone conversation, Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekher Yadav, who recently made controversial remarks on Ramcharitmanas, was heard telling his supporters to take a hard line against the “upper castes”.
A purported video of RJD national vice president Uday Narayan Chaudhary speaking to Yadav over phone went viral on social media, where Yadav was heard telling his supporters to target “upper castes but not the entire Hindu community”.
The video was reportedly captured when Chaudhary was in Simultala block of Bihar’s Jamui Lok Sabha constituency on Sunday. The farmers of Simultala have donated their land for construction of a school, and they urged Chaudhary to invite the state Education Minister there. After which, Chaudhary called Yadav over phone with his mobile speaker on, and the video of entire conversation was recorded by someone.
Yadav, during the conversation, was heard citing an example of “Mata Sabri” and “Nishadh Raj”. He also said that pick Ramcharitmanas or any other holy book and highlight points where people of upper caste were dominating. Yadav suggested his supporters to “avoid saying anything against Ram as it would turn outrageous, and Hindu people may get angry on it.”
The minister had earlier claimed that Ramcharitmanas, Manusmriti, and Bunch of Thoughts “spread hatred in society”.
His remarks stoked a huge nationwide controversy.
