Arun Singh said that the list includes 52 fresh faces, while there are 32 candidates from the OBC category, 30 from the Scheduled Castes and 16 from the Scheduled Tribes.

Expressing confidence about the party’s victory, Singh said that the people of the state trust Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. While on the other hand, he alleged that the Congress is losing space in Karnataka and is crippled by infighting while the Janata Dal-Secular is “a sinking ship”.

Karnataka has a total of 224 Assembly seats. The counting of votes will be taken up on May 13.

  • Indian-origin candidates line up for Leicester Mayor role in UK

Indian-origin candidates line up for Leicester Mayor role in UK

    [ad_1]

London: Two Indian-origin candidates are lined up to go head-to-head for the post of Leicester Mayor in the local elections coming up in the UK early next month.

Conservative Party councillor Sanjay Modhwadia will compete with Rita Patel, a former Labour councillor who announced her bid recently in order to scrap the role.

Patel, a Rushey Mead councillor from Leicester who will run as an independent, launched her campaign saying the city needed “a fresh start” and promised one of her first jobs will be to remove the mayoral role.

    MS Education Academy

Sitting Labour Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, expressed disappointment at Patel’s exit from the party after she was one of four city councillors suspended for six months for their attempt to scrap the mayor’s office through a vote at a council meeting last month.

Now the Tories have confirmed Modhwadia, a city councillor for North Evington, as their candidate to challenge Soulsby who has held the job since it was created 12 years ago.

He was in the eye of the storm when Leicester witnessed sectarian clashes last September following an India-Pakistan cricket match.

Modhwadia, a local businessman, has been campaigning to push for a “Made in Leicester” brand to improve the city’s perception around the globe.

While the Tories and Rita Patel have both said they want to get rid of the mayoral role, Leicester’s Green Party has promised a public referendum on the matter. The Green Party have chosen Mags Lewis who also stood in 2019, finishing third will be their candidate.

The election is scheduled for May 4 and anyone elected may just go on to have a short stay in office.

“Many local residents have contacted our party in recent months to suggest that this is something we should do and our members have also voted in favour of removing the position of City Mayor,” Richard Tutt, Chair of the City of Leicester Conservatives told Leicester Mercury’.

Many in the eastern England city believe the Leader of the Council system is more democratic and accountable for the people of Leicester.

  • ‘No tension’ in releasing list of Karnataka candidates: Bommai

‘No tension’ in releasing list of Karnataka candidates: Bommai

    [ad_1]

Shivamogga: There is no tension regarding the list of BJP candidates for the coming Karnataka Assembly polls but there are expectations, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Friday.

He told reporters here that competition is common when there are a lot of aspirants.

“The party parliamentary board will meet on April 8 and 9 and then release the list of candidates. The list is getting prepared democratically as the opinions of workers of all levels have been taken and discussed in Taluk and district-level committees. The feelings of people have been considered while preparing the list. Three names are proposed for each constituency,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Bommai claimed that the opposition Congress did not have suitable candidates for 60 constituencies and the candidates were brought from other parties and given the tickets.

Just before the release of the second list, Congress state chief D.K. Shivakumar called up many BJP MLAs and offered them tickets, he also claimed.

“The Congress leaders talk something outside but their intentions are different. The Congress will fare much worse in the coming Assembly polls than the 2018 Assembly polls as it lacks suitable candidates, has no organisation at the grassroots level, and no proper ideology or principles,” he added.

Asked about Shivakumar’s threat to cancel all reservations including international quota, the CM said no one can touch this and challenged the Congress leaders to do it.

On BJP MLC Laxman Savadi’s statement of holding him responsible for the defeat of Mahesh Kumatalli, the CM said he had already spoken with Savadi and there is nothing big. The MLC is a senior BJP leader and worked as Deputy Chief Minister, he added.

“Savadi knows his responsibility. I have spoken to him and everything will be okay soon.”

Reacting to a question on the opposition parties attacking noted Kannada actor Kichcha Sudeep for extending support to the BJP, Bommai said it was upto them if others wanted to take Sudeep with them for the poll campaign. The actor has already clarified that he decided to support him because of help extended during his initial days in the Kannada film field, he added.
