BJP unlikely to field candidate in MCD mayoral poll, admits edge to AAP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi BJP is unlikely to field a candidate for the MCD mayoral poll due to a clear mandate in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a top party leader said on Tuesday.

Notification for the upcoming mayoral poll is expected to be issued on April 12, and voting could be held on April 26, according to official sources.

The BJP had contested the election for mayor of the unified MCD (municipal corporation of Delhi) in February despite not having necessary votes to emerge victorious.

    MS Education Academy

Current mayor Shelly Oberoi from the AAP is expected to be repeated by her party. She had defeated BJP councilor Rekha Gupta in the February poll by 34 votes.

The one-year term of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayor begins in April.

“We have not thought about fielding any candidate in the mayor’s election. The AAP has a victory margin and we do not have enough votes to emerge victorious,” said the BJP functionary.

The post of mayor in the national capital has five single-year terms on a rotation basis, with the first year being reserved for women, the second for open category, third for reserved category, and the remaining two again for the open category.

The Aam Aadmi Party won the MCD polls held in December last year. It ended the BJP’s 15 year old rule at the MCD. The AAP bagged 134 of the 250 wards, whie the BJP got 104.

Senior AAP leader and minister in Kejriwal government Saurabh Bhardwaj had said on Sunday that the elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will be held on April 26.

BJP insiders said a final decision about fielding candidates in the elections for mayor and deputy mayor posts “will be taken after poll date is announced. In all likelihood, the decision could be to give the elections a skip”.

Is Karnataka Congress conspiring to field dummy candidate against BJP’s Sudhakar?

    [ad_1]

Karnataka is set to go to assembly polls in 2023, and as the election approaches, there are allegations that the state congress leaders are conspiring to field a “dummy” candidate against the BJP’s K Sudhakar in the Chikkaballapur constituency. These allegations were made by Congress leader Vinay N (Shyam), who claimed that the party’s proposed candidate, Pradeep Eshwer, is a mere formality and that his selection is part of a larger conspiracy to facilitate Dr. Sudhakar’s victory.

Vinay N (Shyam) alleged that Pradeep Eshwer is a supporter of Dr. Sudhakar, as he has been seen with the BJP candidate at many parties. According to him, Eshwer’s selection as the Congress candidate is part of a larger plot by some Congress leaders in Karnataka to ensure Sudhakar’s victory. Vinay further claims that Veerappa Moily and other Karnataka Congress leaders are behind this conspiracy.

    Sudhakar eshwar 3 1
    Sudhakar eshwar 2 1
    Sudhakar eshwar 1

Vinay N has also written a letter to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President, explaining his role in local elections and expressing confidence in his victory if given the ticket to contest from Chikkaballapur. He has also alleged that he is the best Congress candidate from the constituency, as he has worked at the grassroots level since Sudhakar left the party in 2018.

    MS Education Academy

If true, the decision to field a dummy candidate is not only unethical but also goes against the interest of the party that is struggling to increase its vote share since 2014.

    Who is Sudhakar?

    K. Sudhakar is a well-known political figure in Karnataka who is serving as the Minister of Medical Education and Health since February 2020. He was elected as MLA from Chikkaballapur on a Congress ticket in 2018 and was re-elected from the same constituency in 2019 on a BJP ticket.

Sudhakar was one of the MLAs who played a crucial role in toppling the H. D. Kumaraswamy-led coalition government of the Indian National Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) in 2019. With his political experience and influence, Sudhakar continues to be a prominent figure in Karnataka’s political landscape.

  • Sexual orientation of candidate for judgeship has nothing to do with ability: CJI Chandrachud

Sexual orientation of candidate for judgeship has nothing to do with ability: CJI Chandrachud

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid a controversy over the Supreme Court recommending for a second time the elevation of gay senior advocate Saurabh Kirpal as a judge of the Delhi High Court, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said on Saturday the sexual orientation of a candidate for judgeship has nothing to do with his professional ability.

Speaking at the India Today Conclave, 2023, the CJI said when the Collegium considers the candidates for appointment as judges in high courts or the Supreme Court, it is conscious of the fact that it cannot open every aspect of their life to the society.

“The candidate (Kirpal) you are referring to, every aspect of which was mentioned in the report of the Intelligence Bureau, was in the public domain. The candidate in question is open about his sexual orientation. So, when the IB flagged something, we were not really opening up IB sources of information. What could be the danger? Someone might say if you put the IB report in public domain, you might be compromising the sources of information of the IB on the issues of national security, somebody’s life may be in danger.

“This was not a case like that. The IB report dwelt on the sexual orientation of an openly declared gay candidate for prospective judgeship. It’s known to the entire profession and widely reported in the media. All that we said in the resolution was that the sexual orientation of a candidate has nothing to do with the ability or the constitutional entitlement of the candidate to assume a high Constitution post of a high court judge,” he said.

In January, the Supreme Court Collegium had reiterated its November 11, 2021 recommendation for appointing Kirpal as a judge of the Delhi High Court, rejecting the Centre’s contention that though homosexuality stands decriminalised in India, same-sex marriage is still bereft of recognition.

BJP-backed candidate AVN Reddy wins Telangana Teachers’ MLC seat

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-backed candidate AVN Reddy on Friday won the Mahabubnagar-Rangareddy-Hyderabad Teachers’ Member of Legislative Council (MLC) seat in Telangana.

After 21 rounds of counting, AVN Reddy secured 13,436 votes, crossing the required quota of 12,709 votes to emerge victorious.

Earlier, GHMC additional commissioner (Legal) and returning officer Priyanka Ala explaining the process stated that a total of 25,868 votes were polled, and a candidate needs to secure 12,709 votes to be declared the winner. Elimination of candidates will take place until one of them reaches the derived quota, she said.

Until 8 pm on the day of the counting, AVN Reddy was leading by 943 votes over PRTU candidate Chennakesava Reddy. The BJP-backed candidate received 7,584 votes, followed by G Chenna Keshava Reddy with 6,641 votes and Papannagari Manik Reddy with 4,644 votes.

Polling for Telangana Teachers’ MLC seat

The polling for the Telangana Teachers’ MLC seat was held on March 13, with around 29,720 enrolled voters spread over nine districts in the constituency. The polling recorded a high percentage of voter turnout of 90.40 percent.

Meanwhile, in the MLA quota, three BRS candidates, namely Challa Venkatarami Reddy, Despathi Srinivas, and K Naveen Kumar, won unanimously.

AVN Reddy’s win in the Telangana Teachers’ MLC seat is significant for the BJP, which is leaving no stone unturned to strengthen its presence in the state.

The victory can boost the saffron party’s confidence ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in the state.

  • A third former House GOP candidate alerted to unapproved military records request

A third former House GOP candidate alerted to unapproved military records request

    [ad_1]

The attempt to obtain Schmitt’s personnel file comes as House Republicans dig into a broader investigation of military records handling after Reps. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) and Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) revealed the “unauthorized release” of their Air Force records to Due Diligence last year. The firm’s pursuit of documents on GOP candidates from a separate military branch indicates that Due Diligence cast a wider net than previously known.

And Schmitt is pointing a finger directly at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for the attempt to obtain his personnel data. The House Democratic campaign arm paid Due Diligence just over $110,00 between January 2021 and December 2022, according to Federal Election Commission records.

“It appears that a coordinated campaign to target myself and other Congressional Republicans across the country who serve or have served our nation was for political gain,” Schmitt said in a statement, blaming the DCCC for “the illegal use of my social security number to attempt to gain access to my private military records.”

The Air Force said last month that an internal investigation it launched after POLITICO reported on former GOP candidate Jennifer-Ruth Green’s military records in October — when she was challenging Rep. Frank Mrvan (D-Ind.) in a battleground district — found that the private records of 11 individuals were improperly disclosed to a third party.

Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek has said that “virtually all” of the 11 unapproved releases were made to the same third party “who represented himself as a background investigator seeking service records for employment purposes.”

Payton, a former research director for the Democratic group American Bridge, sought Bacon’s personnel information, according to an official letter first reported by POLITICO. It is unclear if Payton was behind all of the 11 Air Force requests, however; Nunn has not publicly disclosed if Payton was the individual who sought his military personnel records, and Green has confirmed only that Due Diligence sought hers.

Due Diligence did not respond to requests for comment. Payton, whom POLITICO attempted to reach at an email address connected to the firm, did not respond to a request for comment. The DCCC did not respond to a request for comment.

In addition to Bacon, Nunn and Green, POLITICO first reported that Sam Peters, who challenged Rep. Steven Horsford (D-Nev.) in November, was notified of the improper release of his Air Force records. Another member of the group of 11 affected by the Air Force’s unapproved disclosures, Kevin Dellicker, fell short in last year’s GOP primary race to challenge Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.).

The other six individuals affected by the Air Force records releases are not publicly known. But the House Armed Services and Oversight Committees are jointly investigating the matter, and Armed Services Chair Mike Rogers (R-Ala.) vowed to keep pushing following the revelation about the attempt to access Schmitt’s records.

“I have asked the Secretary of Defense to provide our Committee with information on this reprehensible incident,” Rogers said in a statement. “It’s unacceptable that the Department of Defense continues to delay answering our Committee on the egregious mishandling of military personnel records. I will fight for the answers our service members deserve.”

Payton indicated on the form requesting Schmitt’s records that he sought them for benefits and employment purposes. The form also indicates that Payton had Schmitt’s social security number at the time of his request.

While Payton sent his request to the New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs, Schmitt said in an interview that he’s seeking clarification about whether a separate attempt was made on the federal level or another possible separate channel to obtain National Guard records.

“I am thankful that the New York Army National Guard notified me of the attempt to illegally access my information and worked to protect me. I am working with counsel to continue to review if any additional attempts were made to illegally use my social security number and steal my private records to weaponize against me for political purposes,” Schmitt said.

According to a copy of the military records request Payton filed, he sought to obtain Schmitt’s “releasable/redacted copy of Official Military Personnel Files (OMPF)” in August of last year.

Payton sought the information for the stated purpose of “Benefits,” “Employment,” and “Other,” to which he explained in the line below: “Services, awards, disciplinary history/records relevant to applicant’s qualifications for (potential) position’s duties, pay, and benefits.”

POLITICO was told by the person who gave it Green’s military records last year that they were obtained through a public records request. POLITICO reviewed the request for the records made by a third party, which sought a “publicly releasable/redacted copy of OMPF [Official Military Personnel File] per Freedom of Information Act statutes.” The requester identified the purpose of the request as relating to “benefits,” “employment” and “other.”

POLITICO also reviewed the letter sent in response to the requester. A military employee responded with a password-protected version of the file with limited redactions. After publication, the Air Force said it erred in releasing the records and launched an investigation.

Bacon said last month that Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall informed him that material from the Air Force’s internal investigation into the records releases was turned over to the Justice Department for possible further action. And Schmitt is joining all five GOP Air Force veterans in calling for a DOJ inquiry into whether political opposition research crossed into criminal activity.

“We’re aware of the concerns raised, and the Department of Justice has been communicating with the U.S. Air Force about this matter,” a DOJ spokesperson in a statement Sunday.

The DOJ declined to comment on the status of any potential investigation into the matter.

Meanwhile, Rogers and Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) asked the Pentagon for the full list of people affected by improper records disclosures and whether any criminal referrals have taken place, setting a deadline of Feb. 27 that came and went, with no response.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy, when asked about the missed deadline, has previously stated that House Republicans will move to subpoenas if the Air Force does not comply with their inquiries and is weighing legislation on the matter. He did not offer further details on what such a bill would look like.

Schmitt, himself, says he is willing to cooperate with the House GOP.

“I have spoken with Congressman Don Bacon and have offered to fully participate” in Rogers and Comer’s inquiry “into these illegal acts,” said Schmitt.

  • New Democratic digital firm wants to make candidate fundraising less annoying

New Democratic digital firm wants to make candidate fundraising less annoying

    [ad_1]

“It’s been a joke that the only advice on how to raise more money online is to endorse the furthest left policy,” Karp said in an interview. “And for some candidates, that might be OK, but for many it’s not.”

They entered a crowded Democratic digital fundraising world where high-profile campaigns have seen immense fundraising success over the past few election cycles, with mixed electoral results. Amid that landscape is some reckoning with the ways in which the constant stream of fundraising texts and emails may have some negative impact on donor and voter morale, although such effects are difficult to measure.

Democratic campaigns have raised record sums online over the last few cycles. In the 10 most competitive U.S. Senate races in 2022, Democratic candidates outraised their Republican counterparts. But while the party’s donor base — which runs to the left of the Democratic party as a whole — has helped fuel campaigns across the country, the emphasis on raising money can also come at a cost if the tactics that may allow candidates to bring in big bucks are not aligned with those to help them win over voters in their state or district.

“What we’re aiming to do is raise money in a way that doesn’t pose electoral risks,” Carroll said.

The trio pointed to a need for greater integration between digital fundraising and other components of a campaign. Email lists, Carroll noted, should be treated not as a “piggy bank” but a list of committed followers, who might appreciate campaign updates and news clips. Donors, he added, are people who campaigns need to think of as potential volunteers and eventual voters as well.

Campaigns have a range of ways of getting their message out, including fundraising texts and emails, paid advertising and earned media. In some cases, those operations are run separately from one another. But voters and donors who are on the receiving end of constant communications do not necessarily distinguish between the ways they hear about a candidate, noted Hughes. And donors are more likely to donate to candidates who share a compelling story and build a brand, not just those who send the most emails or text messages.

“These people who are experiencing your email program are also experiencing what they’re seeing on MSNBC, they’re also experiencing the contact that they’re getting at the doors,” Hughes said. “And it’s important to treat them that way.”

Hyderabad: Mirza Rahmat Baig, a candidate of AIMIM, has been elected as the MLC of Hyderabad Local Bodies. The Election Commission of India on Monday declared him the winner as there were no other candidates contesting the elections.

The certificate of his victory was handed over by the Returning Officer Priyanka Ala. The election was held unanimously and Mirza Rahmat Baig was declared the winner on the last date for withdrawal.

  • Haley enters the fray, a female candidate against a man known for mocking them

Haley enters the fray, a female candidate against a man known for mocking them

    [ad_1]

    181011 donald trump gtty 773

Like others expected to enter the field, Haley has waffled in her support for Trump. She condemned him during the 2016 presidential primary, then served as his ambassador to the United Nations. She rebuked him after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, before announcing she would not run for president if he did so in 2024. Ultimately, she decided to become his first challenger.

Trump, for his part, has already sought to minimize her candidacy, referring to Haley as “overly ambitious.” It is a sign, other female politicians said, of the subtle and not-so-subtle jabs that are to come.

“She’ll probably be hit harder with it simply because she is a woman,” said former Republican New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman, referring to Haley seemingly changing her mind on Trump, like most of the other GOP candidates expected to run. “But she’s been through those kinds of fires before, and she’s been a governor. She had to overcome odds there, and she’s proven that she can.”

Haley has not shied away from presenting herself as a trailblazer. She launched her political career with a 2004 state legislative run, ousting the state’s longest-serving state House member in a Republican primary before picking fights with the House speaker and leadership once she was there. She captured Tea Party support in another long-shot bid in 2010, for governor, when she rose from the bottom of the polls to surpass a sitting congressman, lieutenant governor and attorney general and win the Republican nomination. She went on to become South Carolina’s first female governor.

“When you talk about Michele Bachmann and Carly Fiorina, every time a woman puts themselves in a position of running for office and says, ‘I’m willing to take this step,’ it’s really a woman standing for every other woman who’s considered it or will do it in the future,” said Tudor Dixon, who ran for governor in Michigan this fall as the Republican nominee. “There is a glass ceiling that we’re breaking every time a woman runs, and you do face different challenges than a man. You see comments about women’s appearance — and that’s certainly something that we faced here in Michigan.”

While Haley has had a string of successes running for office before, the presidential campaign presents unique challenges, primarily because of who is currently in it. Trump has built a brand by attacking his perceived foes. But his swipes against women in and surrounding the 2016 presidential election were widely viewed as his most inflammatory insults, a cut deeper than belittling Jeb Bush as “low energy” or Marco Rubio as short.

He repeatedly called Hillary Clinton “nasty,” said Carly Fiorina had a “horseface,” declared that debate moderator Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her wherever,” and went after the appearance of Ted Cruz’s wife.

Dixon, who was endorsed by Trump, noted that female candidates already face hurdles that their male counterparts do not. She said both she and Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer faced sexist comments throughout the race about their looks and fitness. Dixon recalled being approached by a woman who said she supported her policies but couldn’t vote for her out of a belief that she should remain home with her four children. Another time, a woman asked who would take care of Dixon’s kids if she was elected governor.

Dixon is not yet endorsing a candidate in the 2024 presidential field, but said she was pleased to see Haley getting in the race. While conceding Trump is a “wildcard,” Dixon said she’s hopeful this cycle’s primary will be “a different kind of race” than 2016.

“It’s really not going to impress people if one of the men in the race comes out and tries to attack her on something that is a trivial issue, when she really is someone who has a phenomenal record in government,” Dixon said.

In her campaign launch video Tuesday, which came a day before Haley’s previously scheduled “big announcement” Wednesday in Charleston — Haley framed her candidacy as a product of the post-Trump era. She touched on cultural fights surrounding education and racism. But she focused more broadly on American greatness, stopping the “socialist left,” and her accomplishments as governor and ambassador. She also encouraged voters — and potential donors — to consider that a “new generation of leadership” in the Republican Party can go further than nominating a younger man.

Haley gave nods to her biography and gender, describing growing up as a “different” kid, the daughter of Indian immigrants in rural South Carolina. Having joked for years about her stilettos being effective weapons, she is now leaning into her femininity in her bid for president.

“You should know this about me, I don’t put up with bullies,” Haley said in the video. “And if you kick back, it hurts them more when you’re wearing heels.”

Beth Miller, a Republican strategist and past senior adviser to Fiorina, said Haley is not only going to need “thick skin,” but, like women in all spheres, be “over-prepared.”

“It is interesting, when we look back at Carly in 2016, she comes out of a male-dominated industry in tech and she can strike a blow, she’s a very, very good communicator, but there is that, ‘How do you lob a hit without coming off as bitchy?’” said Miller, who advised Fiorina’s Senate run in California before she ran for president. “Unfortunately it shouldn’t be that way, but it inevitably is.”

Haley is bracing for Trump to hurl insults at her. That’s most likely to happen if her poll numbers tick up in the coming weeks as she enjoys time in the national spotlight without other declared candidates.

On Sunday, Haley’s campaign team uploaded to her YouTube account a seven-minute video of Trump sitting side by side with her in 2018, speaking to reporters and complimenting Haley’s work as U.N. ambassador after she announced her resignation. Haley’s staff titled the video “Trump Praises Haley’s Service as Ambassador” and featured it prominently on her new campaign website.

Her allies, many of whom watched Haley’s unlikely political rise in South Carolina, acknowledge that her style has been off-putting to the GOP insiders she has taken on, but appealed to the state’s conservative voters that put her in office.

Katon Dawson, the former chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party who is one of Haley’s campaign surrogates in the state, said Haley was “very popular — not so much with the good ol’ boys, but… with the working-class voters of South Carolina.”

South Carolina state Rep. Nathan Ballentine, a friend of Haley’s since they were part of the same freshman class at the statehouse, recalled her primary election night in 2010, when she advanced to a runoff after having spent much of the campaign as the underdog.

“Nobody gave her a frickin’ shot in hell, and I can remember being in the war room, and she was pissed that she didn’t win outright,” Ballentine said. “I’m like, ‘This is good. This is huge!” And she’s like, ‘I wanted to win it outright.’”

Her drive has carried Haley further than any other woman in South Carolina politics — and further than most women in today’s GOP.

“You know, she talks about her high heels or whatever, like she kicks with a smile, or something like that,” Ballentine said. “I mean, she can stand toe to toe, she’s gone against [legislative] chairmen before, she’s gone against the speaker. That’s what got her in trouble, by the way, but that’s also what made her governor.”
