Congress files complaint against Karnataka BJP candidate for ‘threat to kill Kharge’

    [ad_1]

Panaji: The Congress in Goa on Monday filed a complaint against BJP candidate Manikanta Rathod from Karnataka for the alleged plot to assassinate Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar along with other office bearers filed the complaint at the Panaji police station.

Patkar speaking to reporters, alleged that a conspiracy to kill Kharge and his family was hatched by the BJP candidate from Chittapur seat Manikanta Rathod, who was heard purportedly saying so in Kannada in an audio clip.

    MS Education Academy

“The BJP leader has clearly said in the audio tape that he will kill Mallikarjun Kharge and his family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Election Commission are mum on this issue. We have filed a complaint and have demanded to register a FIR and probe the case,” Patkar said.

Stating that the government has failed to take action against Rathod, Patkar questioned whether “we are in a democracy”.

“This is an open threat to our leader. There are several cases against Rathod. Such a person has been given a ticket by the BJP and despite his threat to our leader, no action has been taken against him,” Patkar said.

“The murder plot is very clear from the audio recording of BJP candidate from Chittapur, Shri Manikanta Rathod, who also happens to be the ‘Blue Eyed Boy’ of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj Bommai,” the complaint stated.

“There is a designed hatred, towards the tall leader of the country Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, on part of the BJP leadership, and that the BJP is unable to digest the fact, that having been born in a Dalit family to a factory labourer, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has risen from the post of block Congress president to be the president of the Indian National Congress,” it said.

“The BJP leaders are openly plotting the assassination of Mallikarjun Kharge, his wife and the entire family, and that, the frustration and desperation of the BJP and its leadership has now reached dangerous proportions,” the complaint stated.

    election 2024 nevada senate 90176

Former Nevada Republican state lawmaker Jim Marchant announced Tuesday he is entering the race for U.S. Senate, looking to unseat incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in 2024.

Marchant, who has led a group of Donald Trump supporters who claim the 2020 election was stolen from the former president, was endorsed by Trump in his failed secretary of state bid in Nevada last year. He also lost his bid for a House seat in 2020 to Democrat Steven Horsford and sued unsuccessfully to overturn that result.

He is the founder of the America First Secretary of State Coalition, a group that advocates for more restrictive ballot access laws in their states. Marchant himself has been a proponent of counting ballots by hand, a process that some election officials have said is less accurate and more costly than a machine count.

  • Opinion | The Crazy Candidate Will Lose in 2024

Opinion | The Crazy Candidate Will Lose in 2024

    [ad_1]

election 2024 biden four years ago 60387

The video, in other words, was another shot in an ongoing war over which party will define itself as more normal in 2024. Republicans thrilled to the line in newly elected Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ GOP response to the State of the Union address that “the choice is between normal or crazy.” That’s a great framing — as long as Republicans aren’t the ones that come off as crazy, which is exactly what Joe Biden and the Democrats are counting on.

The two sides, naturally, portray their respective positions in different places on the normal-crazy spectrum.

For Democrats, their support for trans rights is the logical next step in the expansion of civil rights and is all about inclusion; for Republicans, it is an irrational fad that is trampling on parents’ rights and threatening women’s sports.

For Democrats, the increased focus on race in education is simply teaching the country’s history on racism; for Republicans, it represents an ideologically driven agenda that doesn’t belong in the schools.

For Democrats, efforts in Florida and elsewhere to remove books with offensive content from public schools is book banning; for Republicans, it is ensuring that children aren’t exposed to inappropriate material in schools whose approach should be resolutely down the middle.

And so on. The parties will continue to war on these issues, but the top of the tickets in 2024 will have an outsized role in establishing which party gets to claim the mantle of normal.

Biden and his team figure that in a rematch with Trump, it’s not a contest, and for good reason.

Trump inveighs against the “crazies” on the other side and portrays himself as a defender of common sense. He’s still fundamentally a disrupter, though. He has no interest in politics as usual, when he believes politics as unusual is what’s needed (and is much more compelling and entertaining).

For MAGA, normal politics is corrupt. Normal is useless. Normal is a sham. Normal is for suckers. Only their man sees through it all, tells the truth, and will bring the hammer against the establishment like the woman in the famous “1984” Apple ad.

In 2016, Trump broke all the rules to shake up politics and brought to the fore new positions on immigration, trade and China; now, he wants to break all the rules to wreak vengeance on all the people who supposedly stole the election victory that was rightfully his.

This all suits Biden just fine. In fact, he couldn’t script a better opponent with a better message and better affect for his purposes.

Now, with inflation having eroded real wages in recent years and perhaps a recession looming, Biden can’t be complacent. He could lose to anyone.

Still, Trump’s attempt to get his vice president to subvert the counting of the electoral votes in 2020, his defense of the Jan. 6 rioters, his call for the Constitution to be suspended, his bodyguard of strange loyalists led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, his erratic statements and positions (attacking the state of Florida and threatening not to participate in the Republican debates in just the last couple of days), all make Biden normal by default.

If Biden’s theory of the case against Trump is correct (circumstances and execution will, of course, matter), it falls apart if someone else is the Republican nominee.

First of all, a matchup against Trump effectively takes age off the table. Some other Republican makes it front and center.

Trying to march an 80-year-old man through a national election and another term in office is not normal. Indeed, it’s unprecedented and deeply discomfiting, which is why so many voters think that Biden shouldn’t run again. By contrast, running a 44-year-old (Ron DeSantis) or 57-year-old (Tim Scott) is what you expect.

The Biden team believes if DeSantis is the GOP nominee, he, too, like Trump, can be branded as a MAGA extremist. In that scenario, though, DeSantis will have taken down Trump in an insanely brutal primary campaign. Trump will presumably be denouncing him as a liar and a cheat for the offense of winning against him. It’s going to be hard to portray DeSantis as a tool of the man who tried to destroy him, and failed, and is likely still trying.

Then, there’s the substance. With some exceptions (perhaps the fight with Disney most prominently), the DeSantis record is firmly within the range of normal Republican politics. Sure, there will be targets for Democrats to shoot at, but they’re also defenses that DeSantis is well-prepared to make.

People describe DeSantis as representing Trumpism without Trump, but the last part of that formulation is very important. DeSantis is more combative with the media and has leaned into the culture war more than he might have pre-Trump, but, at the end of the day, he’s nothing like the former president.

He gives conventional political speeches, not rollicking, digressive off-the-cuff rants to adoring fans. He lives, as far as anyone knows, the life of a good family man, with no affairs with porn stars or Playboy Playmates that need covering up. He’s not getting indicted for anything. He hasn’t given a vitriolic speech to a crowd that’s gone on to bust into the U.S. Capitol or any other government building while he watches from the sidelines doing nothing to stop it.

The main personal charge against DeSantis is that he’s standoffish, made few friends in Congress and may have once eaten pudding with his fingers, an allegation he denies.

This is not much material to work with. Even if DeSantis isn’t a backslapper and strikes people as overly earnest, as a general election candidate he’d be a recognizable type — a young, ambitious governor looking to make the step up to the White House like George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter before him. These are all different men, with different politics and strengths and weakness, but there’s nothing unprecedented about going from the state house to the White House.

DeSantis or another Republican who isn’t Trump would be well-positioned to make the race about the incumbent rather than themselves. For all that Biden promised to bring normality back to the White House, his Afghan withdrawal and neglect at the border have shattered whatever reputation he had for competence; the levels of spending have been off the charts; he’s accommodated his party’s left flank, striking out positions that would have been considered wildly radical several years ago; and he’s increasingly governed through legally dubious executive fiat.

In short, Biden can make the case that Trump isn’t normal, whereas another Republican can see and raise him, and hold out the prospect of moving on from the drama and weirdness of the Trump-Biden years.

Samajwadi Party’s mayoral candidate Archana Verma joins BJP

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: Samajwadi Party’s mayoral candidate from Shahjahanpur, Archana Verma on Sunday joined the BJP in the presence of senior party leaders, including Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak.

Welcoming Verma into the party fold, Pathak said, “The Samajwadi Party (SP) had declared Archana Verma as its mayoral candidate from Shahjahanpur in the upcoming urban local bodies elections. However, she was finding it difficult to associate herself with the party (SP).

“She was pained by the atrocities committed on women during the SP regime. When the SP declared her as its (mayoral) candidate, she decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the call of nationalism given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that those who want to work in a dedicated manner for Mother India, and establish a stronger rule of law in UP, should join the saffron party,” he said.

    MS Education Academy

Pathak said Verma’s father-in-law Ram Murti Singh Verma was a four-time MLA (thrice from Jalalabad assembly constituency of Shahjahanpur, and once from Dadraul constituency). He was also a one-time MP of Shahjahanpur (1996), the minister said.

Shahjahanpur will vote in the second phase on May 11. Counting of votes will take place on May 13.

State ministers Suresh Khanna and J P S Rathore were also present at the press conference.

Meanwhile, media co-incharge of the UP BJP, Abhay Singh said senior party leaders will flag off the party’s ‘vikas rath yatra’ on Monday from different cities of the state as part of campaigning for the ongoing urban local body election.

Voting for the urban local body polls is scheduled for May 4 and 11. Counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Election would be held for 17 seats of mayor, 1,420 seats of corporator, 199 seats of nagar palika parishad chairperson, 5,327 of nagar palika parishad member, 544 of nagar panchayat chairperson and 7,178 seats of nagar panchayat member.

  • Congress’ dilemma: Gehlot or Pilot for CM Candidate in upcoming polls?

Congress’ dilemma: Gehlot or Pilot for CM Candidate in upcoming polls?

    [ad_1]

With the Assembly election later this year, Rajasthan faces a political crisis again. The party lost Punjab last year because of mishandling by the Gandhis by backing the wrong horse. Will the Congress leadership be able to save Rajasthan from going the Punjab way?

Congress and BJP have been alternating in Government, and now it is the turn of the BJP to win the elections in Rajasthan. Congress desperately needs to retain the big state in the Assembly polls.

In a catch-22 situation, Congress is still dithering whether to face the electorate with Ashok Gehlot as Chief Minister or the rebel Sachin Pilot instead.

    MS Education Academy

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his former Deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot are at loggerheads again. The power tussle between the two started in 2018, first over party tickets and later over the chief minister’s position. Gehlot wants to keep his job, and Pilot wants to grab it immediately.

Pilot had rebelled twice in the meanwhile. In 2020, he led a revolt with the tacit support of the BJP with 20 of his legislators; the one-month-long political crisis ended after the Congress high command promised to look into the issues raised by Sachin Pilot.

The second time was in September 2022, when the Gehlot camp consisting of 90 MLAs, submitted their resignation letters to prevent Sachin Pilot from succeeding Gehlot. This was when Ashok was offered the party chief’s position. Gehlot wanted to be chief minister and rejected the party post.

Pilot thinks it is now or never as the time is running out. Though he is only 46, if Pilot misses the boat, his next shot would be in 2028. He is not in the mood to waste 5 years of political life.

Last week, Pilot announced a one-day dharna accusing the Gehlot Government of failing to act against the excise mafia, illegal mining, land encroachment, or the Lalit Modi affidavit case sat in dharna for a day. He complained Gehlot had been reluctant to act against the predecessor Vasundhara-led Government. Incidentally, Vasundhara Raje (BJP) quietly helped Gehlot win the confidence vote in 2020. Also, she is staking her claims to become chief minister again.

Sachin is young, charismatic, ambitious, articulate, and sophisticated. He is also close to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi; However, he is a rebel, impatient, and ambitious. There are speculations BJP might offer him a ministerial berth. With few young leaders left, PIlot’s quitting could hurt Congress before the polls.

Ashok Gehlot is 71, asking the electorate for one last chance. If disturbed now, he will break the party.

The options before Congress are few. One is to counsel patience to Sachin. He has chosen corruption as an issue this time. When Rahul Gandhi is spearheading corruption, how could they blame Sachin? Moving Pilot to Delhi to give organizational responsibilities was one of the options, but Pilot would not be satisfied.

Alienating Gehlot also will have repercussions. One option is to convince the one-time magician Gehlot to step down. Gehlot had been the chief minister twice earlier and was an experienced leader from the OBC community. He has shown many times that he is a man in control. But, he is an aging leader, lacks charisma, and indulges in factionalism. He also faces anti-incumbency.

It will be an acid test for the six-month-old Congress Chief Mallikharjun Kharge busy amid Karnataka Assembly polls.

Last month, he was toying with making PIlot the state party chief, which would have soothed Sachin but upset Gehlot. Kharge may be waiting for the Karnataka elections to conclude. With pretty good chances of winning the state, he could deal with both leaders from a position of strength.

Ultimately, it depends on the party’s high command to find an acceptable formula for both. But this is easier said than done. Congress leadership has little time to dither.

The first and foremost is to quieten the warring camps. The Congress has roped veteran Kamal Nath to mediate between the two sides.

Secondly, the High command should act swiftly.

Keeping the crisis unaddressed will result in further chaos. It might also affect the party’s chances in Karnataka.

Thirdly, Kharge should ensure Rajasthan is not messed up as they did in Punjab by backing the wrong horse and losing the state.

Fourthly, there are few politically savvy peacemakers like Ahmed Patel. Also, Sonia Gandhi has taken a backseat.

Kamalnath has reportedly offered Pilot a ‘meaty’ role in the AICC secretariat, a member of the Congress Working Committee, and a vital role in the screening committee for the upcoming Rajasthan elections.

The High Command is not willing to disturb Gehlot. So, Congress must tread carefully, as any misstep would mean losing Rajasthan. It will need all the mediating skills to resolve the issue at a time when Congress needs to win and not lose.

Karnataka polls: Mangaluru SDPI candidate faces sedition, under NIA watch

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The candidate of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) for Mangaluru constituency, Riyaz Farangipet who has submitted nomination to contest from the Ullal constituency in Mangaluru, faces alleged sedition charges and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is closely watching his movements.

The SDPI has fielded a formidable candidate in the form of Riyaz, to wrestle the Mangaluru constituency from Congress, U.T. Khader, former minister and senior Congress leader. The constituency is considered as the bastion of Congress so far.

Riyaz, the national secretary of SDPI, was accused of hatching a conspiracy to attack Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Phulwari Sharif Aarea of Bihar on July 12, 2022. The investigations allegedly revealed Riyaz’s links with accused persons. The NIA had filed an FIR against him. He is alleged to have taken part in the meetings with accused persons in planning.

    MS Education Academy

In 2022, NIA had lodged an FIR against him on charges of sedition. The case is being investigated under IPC Sections 120, 120 (B), 121, 121 (A), 1s3(A), 1s3(B) read with 34.

Apart from this, there are many cases lodged against him in Belthangady, Mangaluru South, Konaje, Mangaluru North, East police stations in Dakshina Kannada district. He is facing charges of creating enmity between groups, obstructing the duty of policemen.

Riyaz Farangipet had taken out a massive rally to file nomination for the Mangaluru constituency on Monday. Sources said that the SDPI had aggressively campaigned against Congress candidate Khader, in the wake of hijab controversy and boycott call on Muslim traders.

Khader had won from this constituency three times since 2008 by defeating BJP candidates. In 2018 Khader defeated Santhosh Kumar Rai Boliyaru from BJP by more than 19,000 votes. BJP had won this constituency constantly for three times between 1994 to 2004.

Khader, known as a progressive leader, is facing stiff competition from the SDPI this time in the Muslim dominated constituency. It was the only constituency to be won by the Congress in the 2018 elections. All seats of the district were won by BJP.

  • ‘Nitish’s formula of opposition unity is one seat, one candidate’

‘Nitish’s formula of opposition unity is one seat, one candidate’

    [ad_1]

Patna/New Delhi: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi, as well as his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal and other opposition leaders is working with the plan to unite the opposition to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, his JD-U said.

“The Nitish formula for 2024 for opposition unity is One Seat One Candidate (OSOC). It has come into effect in the country. The discussions with all opposition parties are completed now and its result will be visible soon,” senior JD-U leader K.C. Tyagi said on Thursday.

“Some issues coming into the media about what happened to Mamata Benerjee, Arvind Kejriwal and K Chandrashekhar Rao, and these will be addressed soon. Arvind Kejriwal has already given full support to the initiative of Nitish Kumar,” he added.

    MS Education Academy

Bihar Finance Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, who is considered one of closest to Nitish Kumar, said: “Media always asks about who would be the PM face of the opposition parties? The idea behind this question is to derail the initiative. BJP always claimed that there is no vacancy for Prime Minister in the country… we will assure them that we will create a vacancy of the same.”

The BJP, over the years, is ruling in the country only with 37 per cent of votes, due to division of votes as opposition parties are contesting against each other. Now the one seat, one candidate formula, if implemented, could reduce the division of anti-BJP votes in the country.

  • Karnataka polls: BJP faces heat from aspirants as candidate list announced

Karnataka polls: BJP faces heat from aspirants as candidate list announced

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Discontent seems to be brewing within the ruling BJP in Karnataka, with the party facing the heat after announcing its first list of candidates for the May 10 Assembly polls, as some ticket aspirants who missed the bus openly expressed displeasure.

With the BJP denying him the ticket from Athani, former Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi on Wednesday announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the party.

Minister and six-time MLA S Angara from Sullia constituency in Dakshina Kannada district announced his retirement from politics today, after failing to get a ticket again.

    MS Education Academy

Udupi MLA Raghupati Bhat, who was also overlooked by BJP, said he was deeply pained by the treatment meted out to him by the party.

BJP MLC R Shankar, who was an aspirant for Ranebennur Assembly seat, resigned as legislator today after the party ignored his request.

After a series of deliberations, the BJP on Tuesday announced its first list of 189 candidates out of a total 224.

Reacting to the developments, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the party will speak to all those disgruntled and will take care of their concerns.

“I have certainly made a decision. I have decided to resign from the primary membership of the party,” Savadi, a BJP MLC, said in a press conference in the district headquarters town of Belagavi.

Amid speculation that he may join the Congress, the 63-year-old three-time MLA said he will make a “strong decision” on Thursday evening and start working on it from Friday.

Sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli, who was backed by BJP leader and former Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi, was given a ticket in Athani in Belagavi district. Kumathalli was among the group of defectors, including Jarkiholi, who helped the BJP to bring down the Congress-JD(S) coalition and form its government under the leadership of B S Yediyurappa in 2019.

A visibly aggrieved Angara said that this was not the way an MLA who toiled for the party with dedication was to be treated. “I am not disgruntled for being denied a ticket by the party. But this is not a way to honour (me) for working for the party and society without any black spot…. There is no value for honesty”.

The 58-year-old said he was retiring from politics and he will not work for the party any more. The BJP has nominated Bhagirathi Murulya as its candidate from Sullia.

“I am not sad over the party’s decision, but I am pained by the way the party has treated me,” Raghupati Bhat said, breaking into tears while speaking to the media.

He said not even the district unit president of the party had called to inform him about the party’s decision and he came to know of it from television channels.

Describing the party’s official candidate Yashpal Suvarna as “my boy”, Bhat said he had always supported Suvarna’s growth in the party. He said he was so shocked that he could not take an immediate decision on his next course of action.

According to party sources, while deciding tickets, the BJP seems to have adopted a policy of trying to replace some seniors and those nearing “retirement” (75 years of age), while asking leaders to withdraw from the fray if they want tickets for their children. “This may be seen in the second list too,” said a BJP functionary.

Former Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa had on Tuesday told the party’s central leadership that he wishes to retire from electoral politics and requested it to not consider fielding him in the Assembly polls. Former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said the party top brass had told him to make way for youngsters but asserted he wants to contest one last time.

The party has not announced tickets yet for Shivamogga and Hubballi-Dharwad Central, the seats represented by Eshwarappa and Shettar in the first list.

Before leaving for Delhi to meet the central leadership, Shettar in Hubballi today said he wishes to make an exit from politics in a respectful manner and not the way he was asked to make way for others.

“No one has contacted me so far after Nadda ji (BJP National President J P Nadda) called me to Delhi for discussions….I’m going with a positive mindset and in the interest of the party…based on what transpires there I will decide on my future course,” he said.

Shetter who reached Delhi later in the day, conveyed his wish to contest in the May 10 assembly polls in a meeting with party president Nadda, after openly expressing his unhappiness over reports that he may be denied a ticket.

After meeting Nadda, Shettar told reporters that he cited his experience, including his six wins in assembly polls, and was told by the party president that the issue will be discussed with other senior leaders.

Meanwhile, Eshwarappa’s supporters in Shivamogga held several rounds of meetings to put pressure on the party to make him withdraw his retirement or to give the ticket to his son K E Kantesh.

Reacting to allegations by disgruntled leaders and legislators that the party did not treat them with respect, Bommai in Mangaluru said, “We are talking to all of them, the party made them legislators or leaders. The party has treated them with respect and will continue to do so. Also, the party will protect their political future.”

Noting that such reactions are natural during elections, to a question on Savadi, he said, “We share a good bonding and things will be resolved through discussions”. While calling Angara a “gentleman politician”, Bommai said he will speak to him.

At least nine legislators including Ministers Angara (Sullia) and Anand Singh (Vijayanagara), have not been given a ticket. Singh is said to have opted out in favour of his son Siddharth Singh, who has been given a ticket.
