Doctors assist in childbirth over WhatsApp call in J-K’s snow-covered Keran

Srinagar: With snowfall ruling out the possibility of airlift, a pregnant woman who had a history of labour complications in the remote Keran in Jammu and Kashmir was assisted by doctors in delivering a healthy baby over a WhatsApp call.

“On Friday night, we received a patient in labour at the Keran PHC (primary health centre) with a history of complicated delivery with eclampsia, prolonged labour and episiotomy,” Block Medical Officer of Kralpora Dr Mir Mohammad Shafi said.

An air evacuation was required to take the patient to a hospital with maternity facilities as Keran remained cut off from the rest of the Kupwara district during the winter.

Continuous snowfall on Thursday and Friday prevented the authorities to arrange an air evacuation, forcing the medical staff at the Keran PHC to look for an alternative way to assist in the delivery.

A gynaecologist in Kralpora subdistrict hospital, Dr Parvaiz, guided Dr Arshad Sofi and his paramedical staff at the Keran PHC over a WhatsApp call on the procedure to deliver the baby.

“The patient was induced (into labour) and after six hours a healthy baby girl was born. Currently, both the baby and the mother are under observation and doing fine,” Dr Shafi said.

‘Wake-up call’: Top Republicans sound alarm over China’s nuclear expansion

    [ad_1]

    congress homeland security 81936

“We have no time to waste in adjusting our nuclear force posture to deter both Russia and China,” the lawmakers said. “This will have to mean higher numbers and new capabilities.”

Lamborn and Fischer are the top Republicans on the Armed Services subcommittees that oversee nuclear weapons programs.

The head of U.S. Strategic Command, Gen. Anthony Cotton, told lawmakers in a letter dated Jan. 26 that the U.S. retains a larger inventory of ICBMs and nuclear warheads, but that China has exceeded the U.S. in the number of fixed and mobile land-based launchers for those missiles. The Wall Street Journal first reported the letter.

The information came in response to a December letter from Republicans Rogers, Lamborn, Fischer and then-Senate Armed Services ranking member Jim Inhofe.

The revelation is likely to only further fuel uproar in Washington over Beijing, after a Chinese surveillance balloon traversed the U.S. before it was shot down last week.

Biden administration officials are set to brief the full Senate on the balloon on Thursday. The House is also likely to soon get briefed, leaders say. And House Republicans are weighing a resolution condemning China for the flap.

China’s military modernization, including its nuclear capabilities and a potential invasion of Taiwan, have been an early focus for Republicans.

House Armed Services held its first hearing Tuesday on the threat posed by China. During the session, Rogers broached the ICBM launcher news and warned of China’s nuclear expansion, urging the U.S. to act immediately to deter Beijing.

“The [Chinese Communist Party] is rapidly expanding its nuclear capability. They have doubled their number of warheads in just 2 years,” Rogers said at the outset of Tuesday’s hearing. “We estimated it would take them a decade to do that.”

The U.S. is undertaking a long-term overhaul of all three legs of its nuclear arsenal as well as fielding new weapons introduced under the Trump administration’s 2018 nuclear blueprint.

Low-yield warheads have been deployed aboard ballistic missile-carrying submarines. Congress has also preserved funding to develop a new sea-launched nuclear cruise missile that the Biden administration sought to cancel.

Nancy Vu contributed to this report.

No one will call BRS vote cutters’ in Maharashtra: AIMIM MP Jaleel

    [ad_1]

Aurangabad: Political parties are free to go to any part of the country but AIMIM is called “voter cutter” wherever it goes, said party MP Imtiaz Jaleel, referring to the Bharat Rashtra Samithi’s plan to enter Maharashtra.

No one will call BRS vote cutters’ in Maharashtra, said Jaleel, the Lok Sabha MP from Aurangabad.

BRS, earlier known as Telangana Rashtra Samithi, is the second political party after the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) that will make a foray into the western state.

BRS chief and Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao is expected to address a “joiners’ meeting” in Nanded, some 280 kilometres from Mumbai, on Sunday.

Jaleel was speaking to PTI over the event of BRS, which is trying to expand its base beyond Telangana.

BRS will contest all elections in Maharashtra henceforth by “showcasing” the progress Telangana has made under Rao, also known as KCR, a minister of the southern state said on Friday.

“In India, a political party has the right to go to any part of the country. BRS is not only coming here (Maharashtra) but also going to states like Odisha and Karnataka. We are mocked as vote cutters’ wherever we go, but it won’t be the case with BRS,” Jaleel said.

He said AIMIM will hold a national convention of party functionaries in Mumbai on February 25 and 26 to plan its way ahead. “I had a long discussion with party president Asaduddin Owaisi recently,” he added.

Jaleel said, “AIMIM will contest more parliamentary and assembly seats compared to past elections in Maharashtra. “They will be in other areas of the state apart from Marathwada,” he said.

The party had won two seats in Maharashtra in 2019 assembly elections.

He said the Hyderabad-headquartered AIMIM is also in search of an alliance partner keeping an eye on the Dalit votes in the state.

“We are talking to 2-3 parties with whom we can go ahead in elections, but surely not with Anandraj Ambedkar (Republican Sena) today. Not every party is happy with what is going on in the state,” he said.

  • Warner and Rubio together call for document oversight for national security

Warner and Rubio together call for document oversight for national security

    [ad_1]

    ap22069562669063

Sets of documents found last year at Trump’s residence in Mar-a-Lago and at locations associated with Biden in the past several months included classified material, and Rubio and Warner (D-Va.) said they had a right to know the content to the extent that it could affect national security.

The most immediate issue is determining whether the Trump and Biden documents contained sources and methods for gathering intelligence, or even if they were current enough to pose a threat to national security, Warner said.

“We are united in we have to find a way to do our job. That means we need these documents,” Warner said.

The members of Congress are not interested in individual criminal justice matters, Rubio said.

“We’re not interested in the timeline, the tick-tock, the who-got-what, who-did-that,” he said.

And as members of Congress who have access to classified materials, the senators might already have access to the specific documents, but they “just don’t know which ones they are,” he added.

While Warner acknowledged Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines is in charge of classification issues, he said Congress could take broad action by writing guidance on classification for executive agencies.

Rubio said he’d prefer not to “go down that road” of withholding funds from agencies involved. But, he added: “We’re not going to sit here and just issue press releases all day.”

As for the classified documents turned over from former Vice President Mike Pence’s home, Warner said: “We’ve not really focused as much on the Pence documents, but who knows what additional shoes may fall.”
