Bengaluru: Bus conductor fails to return Rs 1; court orders BMTC to pay Rs 3K as compensation

    [ad_1]

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) was recently ordered to pay a man Rs 2,000 in compensation after he was denied Rs 1 change for a bus ride by the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission.

According to several media reports, in 2019, a man named Ramesh Naik went on a BMTC bus from Shantinagar to Majestic bus depot, during which the conductor issued a ticket for Rs 29. The complainant paid Rs 30 and was not given the change.

Keeping up the fight, Naik then complained about the conductor to BMTC’s high authorities. To his surprise, the authorities made fun of him and drove him away.

Unhappy with this, he filed a complaint with the local consumer court, asking Rs 15,000 in compensation.

The court has now ordered the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to pay the guy Rs 2,000 in compensation. The court also ordered BMTC to pay Rs 1,000 towards the complainant’s legal expenses.

“It is the customer’s right to receive the balance due to him, even if it is Rs 1,” the court said while slamming the managing director of Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for the incident.

When Naik presented his case in court on his own, the counsel for BMTC refuted the charge, claiming the lawsuit was frivolous.

The judges of the consumer court stated in their judgement announced on January 31, 2023 that the complaint is undoubtedly modest in nature, but the BMTC bus conductor’s ‘inattentive’ and ‘irresponsible’ service is unacceptable.” It is the right of the consumer to collect his money even if it is Re 1 and, thus, he is entitled by the Customer Protection Act, 1986 to receive proper compensation from BMTC for the shortcomings,” the judges underlined.

The court ruled that the BMTC’s MD must repay Re 1 to the bus passenger in addition to providing him Rs 2,000 in compensation for the inconvenience. Court further directed that Naik be given Rs 1,000 for his lawsuit fees, and that all monies be paid within 45 days of the decision, or interest would be assessed as a penalty.

Free bus rides for working women, schoolchildren from April 1 in poll-bound Karnataka

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Working women and schoolchildren will get free rides in public buses from April 1, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after dedicating KSRTC’s Volvo Multi Axel BS4-9600 sleeper buses ahead of the polls here, he said the purpose of chalking out this scheme was to enable women become self-reliant.

They need to introduce mini school buses and the existing buses will be utilised to start the operation. At the time of starting schools, a minimum of five buses must be operated in each taluk. More grants will be released, if necessary, he said.

“Transport plays an important role in economic development because of this it has been given priority and announced free pass facility for working women and school children in the state budget FY 2023-24. “Our government is always with the working staff and the management and let us provide a good service to the commuters,” he stated.

A special transport team called ‘Ambari’ was dedicated to the state earlier in the day which has the sleeper facility, the CM said. Several good features are provided in this fleet of buses just like the railway sleeper coaches.

The earlier edition of Volvo buses was not comfortable and understanding this the multi-axel buses have been designed to provide good facilities to the commuters. Henceforth, the night journey on these buses will be comfortable. The state transport corporation should buy some more buses, he said.

  • At least 39 migrants killed in Panama bus crash after crossing Darién Gap

At least 39 migrants killed in Panama bus crash after crossing Darién Gap

    [ad_1]

At least 39 migrants have been killed in a gruesome bus accident in Panama after trekking for days through the Central American country’s southern jungles on their way to a new life in the US.

The accident took place in the early hours of Wednesday as a convoy of buses traveled from Panama’s border with Colombia towards a migrant reception centre near the town of Gualaca.

“We are in a disaster situation,” Dr Katherine Guerra, the emergency department chief at a hospital in the city of David, told reporters as survivors were rushed there with exposed fractures and severe abdominal injuries.

“There were families, children, newborn babies, elderly women,” one Venezuelan migrant who was at the scene told the newspaper La Estrella de Panamá.

Panama’s president, Nito Cortizo, said government teams were working “arduously” to help survivors and tweeted: “This is deplorable news for Panama and the region.”

    Map of the Darién gap

The names and nationalities of those killed were not immediately clear but Gualaca’s mayor, Luis Manuel Etribí Miranda, told reporters he believed most were from Haiti.

Cuba’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, said citizens of his country were also involved and sent his condolences to victims of the “terrible accident”.

Tens of thousands of Haitians have poured through the perilous rainforests of the Darién Gap between Colombia and Panama in recent years as their Caribbean homeland has fallen deeper into humanitarian and political crisis.

Many thousands of Cubans have made the same journey hoping to outrun growing political persecution and economic strife back home.

Nearly 70,000 Venezuelans also travelled through the Darién last year as their country continued to reel from one of the most severe economic collapses outside of a war zone in recent world history. A total of nearly 250,000 people made the journey last year compared with about 133,000 in 2021, according to official statistics.

Panama’s migration chief, Samira Gozaine, told reporters that authorities believed the accident had happened after the bus missed a turn into the migrant centre where it was supposed to leave its 66 passengers. Local reports said the driver lost control of the vehicle after turning back and the bus plunged off an escarpment, leaving dozens of passengers dead.

The Human Rights Watch activist Juan Pappier called the accident a disaster foretold. “When I visited this region, we saw that these buses carried more people than permitted and made long journeys without breaks. There have been similar accidents in the past, with numerous injured,” Pappier tweeted.
