UK’s first Jagannath Temple to be built in London, backed by Odisha diaspora

    [ad_1]

London: A UK-based charity working on a project to build Britain’s first temple dedicated to Lord Jagannatha in London has welcomed a pledge of GBP 25 million from an Odisha-origin entrepreneur and hopes to get the first phase of construction completed by the end of next year.

Shree Jagannatha Society (SJS) UK, registered with the Charity Commission in England, said that global Indian investor Biswanath Patnaik made the pledge at the first Shree Jagannatha Convention held in London on Sunday.

Patnaik, the founder of FinNest Group of companies, joins the company’s managing director, Arjun Kar, who is the UK-based principal donor of the project.

“Speaking at this occasion, Shri Kar announced that Shri Biswanath Patnaik has pledged a sum of GBP 25 million towards the construction of a magnificent temple for Lord Jagannatha in London, which will be facilitated by FinNest Group of Companies, of which he is the Managing Director,” the charity said in a statement.

The FinNest Group is an early-stage private equity investment firm that invests worldwide in renewables, electric vehicles (EVs), hydrogen locomotives, innovative technology and fintech. Kar also revealed at the event that the group has committed GBP 7 million towards the purchase of nearly 15 acres of land for the new temple to be known as Shree Jagannatha Mandir London.

“A suitable land has been identified and is currently in the final stages of purchase, and a pre-planning application has been submitted to the local government council to secure permission for the Mandir’s construction,” the charity said.

In his message to the convention, which coincided with celebrations of Akshaya Trithiya over the weekend, Patnaik pledged his financial support for the construction of the temple and exhorted devotees to “work together with faith in Lord Jagannatha to make the dream of a Mandir a reality at the earliest”.

The convention, attended by Deputy Indian High Commissioner to the UK Sujit Ghosh and India’s Minister (Culture) Amish Tripathi, celebrated the UK tour of Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the maharaja of Puri, along with Maharani Leelabati Pattamahadei.

“The most significant aspect of the tradition of Lord Jagannatha is its all-encompassing universality. He is invoked and worshipped by virtually all the diverse religious sampradayas each in their own way. Lord Jagannatha is also worshipped by Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs,” said Gajapati Maharaja.

As the Aadya Sevak, or first and foremost servitor of Lord Jagannatha, and the Chairman of the Shri Jagannatha Temple Managing Committee at Sri Mandir in Purushottama Kshetra, he also expressed his support for the temple project. In his keynote address entitled Traditions of Lord Jagannatha and the Significance of Purushottama Kshetra’, he noted that the tradition of Lord Jagannatha represents “great harmony” for the planet.

Dr Sahadev Swain, Chairperson of SJS UK, expressed the hope that the new Shree Jagannatha Mandir London will become an epicentre of Jagannatha culture in Europe and a prominent pilgrimage site, attracting thousands of devotees and tourists from around the world.

The charity’s Indian-origin Trustees Bhakta Panda, Aditya Singh, Santosh Pattnayak, Chetan Shatapathy, Sukanta Sahu, Amita Mishra, Nidhi Kar, and Anjan Mishra famously performed a victory prayer for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and handed him gold-plated deities from India during his leadership campaign trail in London last year.

  • How TikTok built a ‘team of Avengers’ to fight for its life

How TikTok built a ‘team of Avengers’ to fight for its life

    [ad_1]

    tiktok lede override

With the 2020 election approaching, the company seemed to want to hedge its bets on the outcome. CFIUS had reportedly begun an investigation into the company. Early that year, ByteDance succeeded in hiring David Urban, a prominent Republican lobbyist who was also an adviser to Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign. Urban first worked as an outside consultant and then later as an executive vice president at ByteDance. (He is now an outside consultant again.)

But the company needed Democratic help, too, since the party figured to have significant power on the Hill after 2020 even if Trump were reelected.

Fears about TikTok’s foreign ownership were growing, not receding, as the campaign advanced. Not only did SKDK, the Biden campaign-linked firm, reject an overture to work for TikTok, but in the summer of 2020 it instructed employees to delete the app from their phones as a security precaution. Memories of foreign cyber-intrusion in the 2016 campaign, when Russian hackers breached the Democratic National Committee, were still fresh in the minds of Democratic campaign operatives.

Around 2020, the second Washington lobbyist, who was then in touch with the company, said that TikTok was in search of someone who could push back on the narrative that they were collecting data and giving it to China.

In 2021, a third Washington lobbyist, who is a Democrat, recalled being approached by a TikTok consultant with the message that the company was willing to put a lot of money on the table for Democratic talent.

Since the 2020 presidential election, TikTok has had considerably more success enlisting lobbyists and firms with close ties to the Democratic Party. In addition to SKDK’s recent about-face decision to work for TikTok, the company has enlisted FGS Global, another PR agency with ties to Biden’s political network. It also retained the public relations giant Edelman, a powerhouse firm with relationships across both parties. Jamal Brown, former national press secretary to the Biden campaign who more recently was deputy press secretary at the Pentagon, is now a company spokesperson.

Many of those working for TikTok and ByteDance, including SKDK, FGS, Edelman, Crowley, Denham, Gordon, and Leiter, the former counterterrorism official, did not respond to inquiries or declined to comment on the record.

ByteDance’s lavish spending goes beyond generous salaries and retainer fees for lobbyists. It also extends to schmoozing, particularly in Europe where there is less fear among politicians about being seen as cozy with Chinese companies.

Indeed, in Brussels, lawmakers in the European Parliament and officials of the EU Commission, the EU’s executive arm, describe TikTok’s team as articulate and ingratiating, and careful to strike a more conciliatory tone than the representatives of American companies like Twitter, Facebook and Google. They had an agenda to push, but they would not make aggressive threats about EU laws like the Digital Services Act.

“Their lobbying was not confrontational compared to American companies,” one official said. “They always said they wanted to cooperate.”

In Europe, at least, TikTok has used the aversion toward American Big Tech to its advantage. Bertram, the vice president of government relations and public policy for Europe, told POLITICO the question of TikTok’s ownership “feels like a red herring … As Europeans, I don’t think we share the belief that every big company needs to be a Silicon Valley tech company.”

Earlier this year, Chew, the TikTok CEO, appeared at the World Economic Forum in Davos and toured Brussels to meet with European policymakers. In Belgium, he met with around two dozen European lawmakers and policy officials from the EU Commission in a closed-door session at De Warande, an elite members-only club located near Belgium’s Royal Palace and the American embassy. He snapped pictures with tech-focused politicians like Dita Charanzová, a vice president of the European parliament, and Andreas Schwab, a German member who negotiated the Digital Markets Act, a law to limit the market power of large tech companies.

The TikTok executive tried to send a reassuring message at the event. Even as the company has confronted growing political hostility in the U.S., many European lawmakers have continued to see the company in less adversarial terms — as a social media goliath that needs to be regulated, but perhaps not a uniquely problematic one.

Chew was “very clear about the strong concern in the U.S. about China,” said Schwab, adding: “They wanted to explain a bit about their legal structure, their precaution measures, knowing that there might still be doubts.”

After doing a speech about TikTok’s business model, the CEO wanted to listen, said Charanzová. “He wanted to understand concerns in Europe.”

Over half of buildings in Delhi built in unplanned manner: LG Saxena

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: More than half of the buildings in Delhi have been built in an unplanned manner exposing the city to the threat of disasters like earthquake, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said Tuesday.

Speaking at the launch of the Aapda Mitra training programme by the IP University, he said the role these volunteers will play during a potential disaster is very important as they would be the first responders.

Their role is not confined to only disasters but they are expected to respond to incidents like road accidents, snatching, eve-teasing etc, the LG said.

“Fifty-sixty per cent of the buildings of Delhi have been constructed in an unplanned manner due to flux of urbanisation, as a result of it, we are running the risk of the big fire, earthquake-like disasters. Seeing these disaster perceptions, the role of Aapda Mitra volunteers is significant,” Saxena added.

The LG also inaugurated the newly built Atal Incubation Centre’ and auditorium-cum-placement centre & open air theatre’ of the Dwarka campus of the university.

Delhi Principal Secretary (Home) Ashwani Kumar said a total of 1,800 Aapda Mitras are being trained as a part of this drive.

As many as 600 volunteers are being trained by IP University and the rest 1,200 volunteers are being trained by Skill Corporation of India to meet any disaster needs of Delhi.

IP University will train 600 Aapda Mitra volunteers selected by Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

The university will conduct this training programme in a phased manner. At first, training programme for 100 such volunteers has been started today.

The duration of this basic intensive training programme is 12 days.

The training module for these volunteers has been prepared by the Centre of Excellence in Disaster Management (CEMS) of the University with close coordination with DDMA. The training for the next batch will start after the successful completion of a training programme for the previous batch.

The Aapda Mitra programme was launched by the National Disaster Management Authority in May 2016 with a focus on training community volunteers with the skills that they would need to respond to their community’s immediate needs in the aftermath of a disaster thereby enabling them to undertake basic relief and rescue tasks during emergency situations such as floods, cyclone, earthquake, fire, etc.

  • Karnataka: Actor Chetan Ahimsa arrested for ‘Hindutva is built on lies’ tweet

Karnataka: Actor Chetan Ahimsa arrested for ‘Hindutva is built on lies’ tweet

    [ad_1]

Kannada actor Chetan Ahimsa was arrested in Bengaluru on Tuesday on charges of hurting Hindu sentiments via his latest tweet that said, “Hindutva is built on lies”.

He was arrested this morning by the Sheshadripuram police and produced before the district court.

On Monday, he tweeted and shared, “Hindutva is built on LIES Savarkar: Indian ‘nation’ began when Rama defeated Ravana & returned to Ayodhya —> a lie 1992: Babri Masjid is ‘birthplace of Rama’ —> a lie 2023: Urigowda-Nanjegowda are ‘killers’ of Tipu—> a lie Hindutva can be defeated by TRUTH—> truth is EQUALITY”

Soon after, a complaint was registered against the actor and he was arrested.

The 39-year-old actor is also a Dalit and tribal activist.

In the past, he has found himself in the bad books of far-right Hindutva elements by posting statements on social media that do not cater to the latter’s ideology.

On February 23, 2022, the actor was arrested for his alleged comments against Karnataka High Court judge Justice Krishna Dixit. Dixit was a part of the bench that upheld the Bommai government’s decision to ban the hijab from government educational institutions.

On February 16, 2022, Chetan re-tweeted one of his old tweets about Dixit who had granted pre-arrest bail to an alleged rape accused.

He said, “This week KA (Karnataka) High Court Justice Krishna Dixit grantd (granted) pre-arrest bail to rape-accused Rakesh B claiming ‘it is unbecoming of Indian woman to sleep after rape; that is not way women react when they are ravished.’ What’s ‘unbecoming’ is 21st c (century) misogyny of this judiciary Dixit fossil.”

On October 23, 2022, an FIR was lodged against him for calling out the hit movie Kantara’s director/actor Rishab Shetty for speaking wrong information regarding ‘Bhoota Kola’, a tradition depicted in the movie.

Shetty, in an interview, had termed ‘Boota Kala‘ as a part of Hindu culture. “The gods in Kantara are all part of our tradition and it is indeed a part of Hindu culture and rituals. Because I am a Hindu, I have belief and respect for my religion. What we have said is through the element that is present in Hindu dharma,” Shetty stated in an interview.

In response, Chetan tweeted that though he was glad that a Kannada movie is being a major hit nationwide, Shetty was wrong about ‘Boota Kola’ being a part of Hindu culture.

Chetan tweeted, “Glad our Kannada film ‘Kantara’ is making waves on a national level. Director Rishabh Shetty claims Bhoota Kola is ‘Hindu culture’. False. Our Pambada/Nalike/Parawa’s Bahujan traditions predate Vedic-Brahminical Hinduism. We ask that Moolnivasi cultures be shown w/truth on & off screen.”

The tweet enraged many Hindutva leaders who trolled the actor mercilessly, and Chetan had to call a press conference to make his statements clear.

“It is wrong to say that ‘Bhoota Kola’ is part of the Hindu religion. Adivasis practice the ritual and there is no ‘Brahminism’ in Bhoota Kola. Don’t say Hindu in the movie. It is the culture of the Adivasis. It is unfair to put Adivasi culture in the column of Hindu religion,” he told reporters.

US Consulate in Hyderabad moves to own facility built at cost of $340 million

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The US Consulate General in Hyderabad on Monday opened operations at its new facility at Nanakramguda.

Fifteen years after commencing the operations from historic Paigah Palace in Begumpet, the Consulate has moved to its own building in the Financial District, Nanakramguda, an information technology cluster in western part of the city.

“Today marks a milestone in the US-India Strategic Partnership,” US Consul General, Hyderabad, Jennifer Larson, said.

“At a cost of $340 million, our new consulate facility in Hyderabad is an investment in the US relationship with India. We look forward to increasing our staff – including visa officers – in order to continue expanding US-India ties in the months and years to come,”” she said.

Established in 2008 at the historic Paigah Palace, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad is the first US diplomatic office to open in India since India’s independence. Groundbreaking at the new location in Nanakramguda took place in 2017.

Located on a 12-acre site, the new consulate embodies the US State Department’s mission to provide safe, secure, functional, and resilient facilities for U.S. diplomacy. The $340 million construction project included $70 million in local investment and employed a combined workforce of over 1,000 American, Indian, and third-country nationals.

The US Consulate General represents the US in the Indian states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. The US-India relationship in the region spans a wide range of key issues, including higher education and cultural programs, military cooperation, health and environmental issues, and commercial ties, the US Consulate said in a statement.

The US Consulate General Hyderabad issued more than 18,000 student visas during 2022, while US companies have invested billions of dollars in the region’s tech, defense, aerospace, and pharmaceutical sectors.

Through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, the Consulate works with local partners to preserve historic monuments, while Consulate staff work with local journalists to combat disinformation and expand coverage of climate change. US and Indian militaries also teamed up for joint exercises based out of Eastern Naval Command in Visakhapatnam, it said.

Visa applicants who have scheduled interviews should now go to the US Consulate’s new facility in Nanakramguda for their interviews.

All other visa services – including biometrics appointments, “dropbox” appointments (interview waiver), and passport pickup – will continue to take place at the Visa Application Center (VAC), located at the Lower Concourse, HITEC City Metro Station, Madhapur, Hyderabad.

  • 3 DIY constructions that can be built with the help of steel building kits

3 DIY constructions that can be built with the help of steel building kits

    [ad_1]

Metal building construction kits are an excellent way to build the structure of your dream. These kits are of great value and can be used to build garages, workshops, airplane hangars, and more. Building with steel building kits is just as easy as building with wood construction materials like lumber and plywood.

In this article, you will read how to use these kits for different types of projects that will help you get started on your DIY journey.

Steel Building Kits: What are they?

Steel DIY construction kits are prefabricated, ready-to-assemble structures that are an affordable alternative to traditional construction. They are easy to install and can be built on any site without needing concrete or foundations.

These kits are often used in commercial and industrial applications and are typically sold as a complete kit with all materials needed for construction. These kits have been popular since the 1960s. The following are some of the popular uses of these kits:

     Build Garages

Building a garage is a great project to tackle. The structure should be sturdy and made to last so that it will be there for many years.

Steel construction kits are an excellent option if you want your garage to stand firm and look great. The steel can be painted in any colour you’d like, giving you plenty of options for the design of your new garage. You’ll also save time when building with steel kits because they are prefabricated, so all framing is already done by experts at the factory where they’re made.

     Build Workshops

Building workshops with steel kits will be the best choice if you are a car enthusiast or a motorcycle maverick, and your workshop is like your home away from home.

These easy-to-install metal buildings are of durable quality, making them ideal for storing whatever you need and providing comfort, security and low maintenance. Those who want to work on their hobby, such as woodworking or playing around with different tools, can quickly build a workshop with metal building kits.

    Build Airplane Hangars

Building airplane hangars with metal building kits are an excellent option for those who want to make their shelter for private aircraft. DIY metal building kits are easy and fast to assemble and offer the highest degree of durability and long-lasting performance.

Another reason these DIY metal buildings are so popular among homeowners looking to build their airplane hangars is that they allow for customizations.

In other words, you can design your hangar based on your personal preferences regarding shape, size and colour—making sure that it fits perfectly into its surroundings, which is especially important if you live in an area with limited space.

    Wrapping Up

The fact is steel building kits are one of the most versatile and cost-effective construction solutions on the market today. They can create a wide variety of buildings, including garages, warehouses, shelters, and other commercial buildings.

If you’re considering buying steel building kits for your next project, then there are many different things that you should consider first before deciding which type is best suited for your needs. Look for a company that sells these metal building kits having prefabricated steel.
