PFI link: NIA attaches 2 floors of Pune school building

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The NIA on Sunday attached two floors of a school building in Pune where the Popular Front of India (PFI) had been organising camps to radicalise and indoctrinate Muslim youths and further train them for carrying out targeted killings and attacks against leaders and organisations of a particular community.

The 4th and 5th floors of the Blue Bell School Building were used by PFI to plan and prepare for carrying out terrorist activities with the aim of endangering the unity, integrity and security of India.

“PFI was recruiting innocent Muslim youth into the outfit at these premises, and also providing them with armed and unarmed training to eliminate/attack those opposed to the establishment of Islamic Rule in the country by 2047,” said the NIA.

    MS Education Academy

The official said that the two floors have been attached by the NIA as ‘proceeds of terrorism’ under the provisions of UAPA, in a case registered by the agency on April 13.

The NIA had filed a charge sheet on March 18, 2023, before the NIA Special Court, Delhi, against 20 accused, including the PFI, as an organisation.

The NIA had conducted a search of the two floors of the school premises on September 22, last year.

The agency had seized incriminating documents, which revealed that the said property was used by the accused, found to be associated with the PFI, for organising arms training for its cadres. The training camps served as platforms to incite innocent Muslim youths against the government, as well as leaders and organisations of a particular community. The camps were also used to inflame their passions and provoke them into embracing violent jihad, with the aim of committing terrorist activities.

The newly recruited PFI cadres were trained in the use of dangerous weapons, like knife, sickle etc, for attacking and murdering prominent leaders opposed to the outfit’s ideology of establishing an Islamic Rule in India.

The NIA investigations had earlier revealed that the accused persons were part of the criminal conspiracy to establish Caliphate and Islamic Rule in India by waging war against the country and toppling the democratically elected government. They were all identified as senior PFI cadres, accountants, authorised signatories of PFI’s bank accounts.

The NIA has been investigating the activities of the PFI, which was banned for five years, in September 2022 by the government.

  • Leaders stress on building strong institutions on Ambedkar birth anniversary

Leaders stress on building strong institutions on Ambedkar birth anniversary

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A host of leaders paid tributes to Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution, on his 132nd birth anniversary on Friday, with many recalling his efforts to uplift the marginalised sections of society and others stressing the need to build strong institutions and create an egalitarian society.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several others remembered the social reformer, economist and jurist, who went on to become the first law minister of the country.

Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet Babasaheb dedicated his life to the empowerment of the deprived and exploited sections of society. He also shared an audio clip of his earlier remarks on Ambedkar’s life.

    MS Education Academy

At a ceremony in the Parliament complex, President Murmu and the prime minister were joined by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in paying floral tributes to Ambedkar. Birla called him an architect of social transformation who fostered equality, freedom, justice and brotherhood.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a floral tribute to Ambedkar in Birbhum in West Bengal. “Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar sought to illuminate the nation by kindling the spark within every Indian. He laboured to create a constitution that provides justice, equality, and freedom to every citizen,” he said in a tweet.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said he “respectfully remembers and salutes” him on his birth anniversary. “Along with his contribution to the making of the Constitution, his active role in building the institutions of independent India is incomparable. Babasaheb is an inspiration for all of us in building a strong India,” he added.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao unveiled a 125-ft-tall statue of Ambedkar in Hyderabad. Flower petals were showered on the statute from a helicopter. The statue was built using 360 tonnes of stainless steel and 114 tonnes of bronze, at a cost of Rs 146.50 crore.

Born in 1891 in a Dalit family in Mhow, near Indore, in the then Central Province (now Madhya Pradesh), Ambedkar rose from a humble background to become a leading voice of the marginalised people during the freedom struggle and is credited with introducing several social reforms.

BJP chief JP Nadda paid his tribute to Ambedkar at the party headquarters in Delhi. He said Prime Minister Modi is working to fulfil his dream by working for the development and prosperity of all sections of society.

However, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge took a swipe at the government, saying the “culture of forcing silence” and branding people “anti-nationals” is a dangerous trend that will finish our democracy and destroy the Constitution. He recalled that Ambedkar had warned about the ills of ‘hero-worship’ or ‘Bhakti’ in the context of Indian politics.

In an article in The Telegraph, former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said, “As we honour Babasaheb’s legacy today, we must remember his prescient warning that the success of the Constitution depends on the conduct of the people entrusted with the duty to govern.”

She also said the regime in power is “misusing and subverting” the institutions of the Constitution, and the people must act to defend the Constitution from this “systematic assault”.

“Equality, liberty, fraternity & justice – the universal values Babasaheb Ambedkar championed, will always remain our guiding light & strength! Tributes to the architect of India’s Constitution on his birth anniversary,” said Rahul Gandhi.

BSP president Mayawati said Ambedkar laid the strong foundation of a modern India by giving an ultra-humanist and welfare Constitution. “His life struggle is a ray of hope for crores of poor, labourers, deprived and other toiling people even today,” she said.

In a tweet, she said, “Taking inspiration from him, the Bahujan Samaj Party was established on this day, 14th April, in 1984, to take forward the stalled caravan of self-respect and to unite the people who were divided on the basis of caste, which has set an example of social change and economic liberation, especially in UP.”

Addressing a gathering at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) headquarters, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extolled Ambedkar for laying out a vision for equality and egalitarianism in society. He hailed his pursuit of higher education during the British era when not many Indians thought about getting degrees from institutions such as Columbia University and the London School of Economics.

Ambedkar knew the value of education and its role in lifting society from poverty and bringing equality among people, he added.

Several other chief ministers and governors also remembered Ambedkar’s efforts to make India a developed society.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde garlanded the portrait of Ambedkar at “Varsha”, his official residence in south Mumbai, and greeted the people on the occasion. He later visited Chaitya Bhoomi, the memorial of the chief architect of the Constitution, at Dadar in central Mumbai, and paid tributes.

Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais tweeted, “Respectful tributes to the Architect of Indian Constitution Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on the occasion of his birth anniversary.”

Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararjan, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also paid tributes to Ambedkar.

  • Indian-American held for fire-bombing Wisconsin building

Indian-American held for fire-bombing Wisconsin building

    [ad_1]

Washington: An Indian-descent man has been arrested for alleged involvement in the fire-bombing of in an office building in the US’ Wisconsin state last May.

Hridindu Sankar Roychowdhury, a 29-year-old resident of Madison, Wisconsin, was arrested at Boston’s international airport on Tuesday, according to court papers.

He is charged with one count of attempting to cause damage by means of fire or an explosive. If convicted, he faces between 5 and 20 years in prison.

    MS Education Academy

It’s a rare occurrence for the Indian American community, which is considered a model minority in the US, with the highest levels of education and mean household income. There have been few, if any at all, instances of their Involvement in crime or activism-related criminal offences.

Law enforcement officials had found a slogan painted on a wall at the fire-bombing site, which could point to Roychowdhury’s motivation: “If abortions aren’t safe then you aren’t either” and, on another wall, a large letter “A” with a circle around it and the number “1312” (which is a numerical rendition of the acronym ACAB – “All Cops Are B**tards)”, a slogan used by protestors around the world and increasingly by extreme-left activists in the US in response to police killings).

The US Justice Department said Roychowdhury was given away by DNA he had left on an unfinished burrito (a Mexican cuisine roll), which, after a laboratory test, matched DNA he had left on a lighter that was found by law enforcement personnel at the site of the fire-bombing.

“According to the complaint, Mr. Roychowdhury used an incendiary device in violation of federal law in connection with his efforts to terrorize and intimidate a private organization,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen of the Justice Department’s National Security Division.

The Justice Department said on Mothers Day on May 8, 2022, law enforcement responded to a fire call at an office building in Madison, Wisconsin. Officials found two mason jars at the fire site — one with a missing screw-top lid and the other with the lid, with a piece of cloth tucked into it; it was also half-filled with a clear liquid, which could have been used as an accelerant. They also found a lighter that could have been used to set off the fire bombs.

By March 2023, investigators had come to zero in on Roychowdhury as a suspect. Local police officers in Boston picked up a leftover burrito he had thrown into a trash bin, along with related items. A lab test found a DNA match on the leftovers and the lighter.

Roychowdhury was arrested at the Boston Logan International Airport with a one-way ticket to Guatemala City.

Mumbai man goes berserk, stabs 5, kills 2 in residential building

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: In a shocker, a middle-aged man went on a stabbing spree in a Mumbai residential building on Friday, attacking five persons, of which two have reportedly succumbed to their injuries, before he was overpowered, police said.

The attacker, identified as Chetan Gala, 54, was arrested after the mayhem which occurred around 3.30 pm, sending panic waves in the locality.

According to officials at the Dr D.B. Marg Police Station, the incident occurred at the Parvati Mansion building, with old-style common passages in a residential neighbourhood of Grant Road.

Locals who shot videos showed Gala rushing to another person on the second floor of the building and repeatedly stabbing him till he collapsed in a pool of blood.

Then he nonchalantly walked down to the first floor where another man was descending the stairs and the crowds below warned him to run to safety as the attacker was coming behind him.

At least two other panicky residents could be seen running around with the people assembled below screaming at the attacker.

The exact motives behind the serial killing bout is not clear and the police have lodged a FIR and probing further.

The injured were rushed to the Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and the BMC’s Nair Hospital nearby where the condition of two is said to be serious.

Police said that the accused Gala suddenly stepped out brandishing a knife and started stabbing people at random around, targeting at least five.

Horrified locals called up the police and a team rushed there to take control, and managed to overpower him soon.
