The violators were charge-sheeted and produced before relevant courts. As many as 371 of them were awarded jail. Seven people were awarded the maximum jail term of 15 days.

Apart from it, fines were also imposed on the violators. A total of about Rs 94 lakh fines were imposed on violators.

During the campaign against drunk driving in Hyderabad, 59 violators even lost their driving licenses.

    Drunk driving in Hyderabad

Drunk driving is a serious violation in Hyderabad, as well as across India, and the Hyderabad traffic police are taking a tough stance on irresponsible behavior.

It not only poses a serious threat to the driver but also to other road users. The campaign by the city traffic police serves as a reminder for all to say no to drunk driving.

In order to curb the violation, traffic police are not only imposing fines but also canceling licenses. In some cases, cops are ensuring that violators are awarded jail terms.

    A criminal offense

Under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, drunk driving is a criminal offense and violators can face severe legal penalties.

There are provisions of imprisonments, fines, and suspension of driving licenses.

In the case of repeat offenders who get caught more than once for drunk driving in Hyderabad and in other parts of the country, penalties can be more severe.

SRINAGAR: Kashmir scholar Hakim Sameer Hamdani’s book on sectarian conflict and the subsequent reconciliation was released at an impressive function at Kani Home Zakura. The function was attended by scholars, researchers, scribes and book lovers.

Scholars, scribes and book lovers were in attendance at the book launch function at Kani Home in Zakura where Dr H Sameer Hamdani’s book on sectarian reconciliation was formally released on March 4, 2023. The book was published by Bloomsbury Publishing London. KL Image: Fayaz Najar

The book Shi’ism in Kashmir: A History of Sunni-Shi’i Rivalry and Reconciliation was published by global publisher Bloomsbury Publishing’s London chapter.

Prof Sidiq Wahid and INTACH convenor M Salim Beg presided over the afternoon function as Muhammad Maroof Shah and Raashid Maqbool reviewed the scholarly work in an open-air gathering. The book is the second major publication of Kashmir’s prominent scholar. His earlier book The Syncretic Traditions of Islamic Religious Architecture of Kashmir (Early 14th–18th Century) filled a wide gap in the history of Muslim architecture and his new book on sectarian issues in Kashmir is perhaps the first serious scholarly effort to address the issue.

Scholars who have read the book asserted that the bold effort is aimed at skipping the assumptions and rooting the evolution of the relationship on basis of recorded history.

Responding to a number of questions at the conclusion of the function, Hamdani hoped his exercise opens the area for further research.

Currently the Design Director at INTACH Kashmir, Sameer prominent returned after completing his post-doc at MIT, USA.

  • Brought up by an Orphanage, Tral boy publishes his debut book “Hayatuk-Aab”

    [ad_1]

    Jahangeer Ganaie

Tral, Mar 04: A youth from southern Kashmir inspired by renowned Sufi poets has published his first book in Kashmiri to promote Sufi literature besides the Kashmiri language.

Zahid Manzoor Bhat, a resident of Gutroo village in Aripal Tehsil of Tral, said that listening to Sufi saints since his childhood inspired him to pen down hundreds of poems, most of them in Kashmiri.

“Sufi poets like Rajab Hamid, Rasool Mir, Shamas Fakeer, Rahim Sopore inspired me since my childhood.Once a Teacher Namely Abdul Rashid saw some couplets on my notebook While checking when i was in class 8th then he said you will become a poet”. And by listening and reading the writings of sufi poets, I have written over 500 poems. Most of my poems are Naat and Hamud,” Bhat said while talking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

After a lot of struggle Bhat turned his poetry collection into a book which he wasn’t able to do due to financial issues.

“My father died when I was just 3 years old and we got some help from a Yateem trust and after completing my Bachelors, I started to work as a private school teacher where I am getting meager salary to take care of my family which comprises of the mother, grandmother and the younger brother,” he said. “I wanted to publish my book but I am hardly fulfilling the needs of the family, but now some friends helped to publish the first book, titled “Hayaatuk-Aab ”.

Bhat said most of his work is yet to be published while besides promoting Sufism, the main motive behind writing the poems in Kashmiri is to promote the mother tongue.

“In my poems, I have touched social issues as well. We are losing our culture which is our identity and are only propagating western culture,” he said.

“Our valley is full of talent, but the financial issues and lack of platform are becoming an obstacle for thousands of youth to get their dreams fulfilled,” he said—(KNO)

Mandaviya unveils ‘India’s Vaccine Growth Story’ at World Book Fair

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Saturday released a book titled “India’s Vaccine Growth Story – From Cowpox to Vaccine Maitri” at the World Book Fair here at Pragati Maidan.

The book authored by Sajjan Singh Yadav, Additional Secretary, Union Finance Ministry, elaborates on India’s achievement in developing, producing and distributing Covid-19 vaccines.

Speaking on the occasion, Mandaviya said that India administered 2.2 billion doses as a part of the world’s largest Covid vaccination drive without any shortages across the nation, which resulted in saving 3.4 million lives.

The minister also highlighted that when other countries were struggling with vaccine hesitancy, India set an exemplary pro-vaccination Covid management model.

“It gives me immense pleasure to see research, manufacturing and vaccine drive has been portrayed in comprehensive fashion that recounts not just the pandemic crisis but also delves into vaccine history, that can be traced 2500 years back,” Mandaviya added.

He urged writers to come to fore, stating that “research-based documentation is a medium that can bring to light India’s heritage, illustrating to the world possibilities and solutions, as India’s Covid-19 trajectory has done, leaning on our traditional roots and heritage”.

“Our heritage reflects our knowledge and science that have stood the test of time, and proven exemplary in times of crisis,” he added.

In the book, the author has also delved upon future challenges that may emerge for vaccinology and new vistas for the growth of Indian vaccine industry in a candid manner.

  • Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

Christian stall at Delhi World book fair vandalised by right-wing goons

    [ad_1]

Chaos erupted when a group of right-wing workers vandalised a stall containing Christian spiritual books at the New Delhi World Book Fair held in Pragati Maidan on March 1.

A video has emerged on social media Twitter where around 30 men wearing saffron scarves and tilak on their forehead can be seen tearing posters of the New Testament Psalms and Proverbs.

Alleging that Christians target poor Hindu families for religious conversions, they tore copies of The Holy Bible and shouted, “Free Bible bandh karo, dharam parivartan bandh karo” (Stop distributing free copies of the Bible, stop religious conversion) ‘Jai Shree Ram’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

The book fair had several stalls of different genres including different spiritual and religious books. The vandalised counter had put a tag for free Holy Bible, which triggered a few Hindutva men.

According to Indian Express, one of the volunteers said other stalls also distributed free texts from other religions.

“The men accused us of converting people by forcing them to take the books. We told them that we were only distributing free books to passersby. But they didn’t listen,” the volunteer was quoted by the Indian Express.

Mahindri Panchandham, a self-proclaimed member of Unite Hindu, led the vandalism. In the video, when some people from the crowd try to remind him that the Indian Constitution describes the country as a democratic nation where one is free to follow under their free will, Panchandham shot back saying, “Democracy gives the right to preach religion but not to lure poor Hindus and convert them.”

As people try to calm an agitated Panchandham down and reason with him, he refuses to listen and starts raising slogans in a louder tone.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police informed that no complaint was registered by the members of the book fair.

“We check the area and found that no books were torn. The group had only protested and was soon removed. There was no disruption or violence. The Gideons don’t wish to file a complaint and said the matter was sorted,” said a police officer.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad spokesperson Vinod Bansal said that Christian groups and missionaries are infamous for targeting poor Hindu families and tricking them into converting to Christianity. “These groups and missionaries convert people by forcing them to take books. We don’t support this and asked them not to do the same. There was no violence or anything,” he said.

  • What’s not in Ron DeSantis’ new book

What’s not in Ron DeSantis’ new book

    [ad_1]

The 250-plus page volume, like many political autobiographies, is selective with parts of his political ascent. DeSantis, who is expected to launch a bid for president in the spring, recounts door-to-door campaigning during his first bid for Congress but he doesn’t reference his decision to briefly run for U.S. Senate in 2016.

And while he notes that former President Donald Trump boosted his campaign in December 2017 when he praised him as a little-known congressman, DeSantis doesn’t include Trump’s crucial full endorsement in June 2018 that propelled DeSantis to victory in the Republican primary and ultimately to the governor’s mansion. The two men will likely be rivals for the GOP presidential nomination.

Political autobiographies are often considered routine assignments for ambitious politicians seeking higher office, a way for a White House hopeful to highlight their achievements and successes unchallenged. Even by those standards, DeSantis’ book stands out for the limited amount of personal information he gives readers, especially in the era of oversharing.

The book, however, provides DeSantis with an opportunity to tour multiple cities in Florida and as far away as California to boost book sales — and himself. The New York Times also reports that DeSantis will soon be traveling to New Hampshire, Iowa and Nevada, all early primary states.

DeSantis does recount several vignettes about his life, including his time on the Yale baseball team, where he got to meet and talk to with former President George H.W. Bush, who like DeSantis was captain of the university’s baseball team. He depicts his initial meeting with his wife Casey DeSantis on a golf course and their eventual wedding at Disney World that included a scramble to get his U.S. Navy dress whites prepared ahead of the ceremony. DeSantis also discusses his wife’s 2021 breast cancer diagnosis.

DeSantis, who told Fox News’ Mark Levin last weekend that he wrote the entire book himself, also details in-depth some of his interactions and decisions, including a chapter focused on his battle with Disney over legislation that bans teachers from leading classroom lessons on gender identity or sexual orientation for students in kindergarten through third grade. DeSantis describes his conversation with then-CEO Bob Chapek, where he told the Disney executive that the outrage over the legislation would quickly pass and that he shouldn’t oppose it.

There are several passages with interactions with Trump, including when DeSantis pressed him for extra federal hurricane relief funding despite the objections of White House staff. DeSantis contends that the Trump administration was angered by his decision to publicize the decision.

But the book contains no real hints of the growing divide between the two men. He has no response to Trump’s framing of the president’s crucial endorsement, including during a recent interview with Hugh Hewitt where Trump contended that DeSantis had “begged” him for the endorsement and that he was “dead” and prepared to leave the governor’s race. “He said, ‘If you endorse me, I’ll win’ and there were tears coming down from his eyes,” asserted Trump.

During a Tuesday radio interview with Brian Kilmeade to discuss the book, DeSantis said that Trump’s attacks were part of the “silly season” that comes with campaigns. But he added that when it came to his book, “I wasn’t really into throwing potshots.”

“He can say what he wants about me,” DeSantis said. “I will also give him credit for the things that he did that were positive. I’m appreciative of a lot of things he did. It doesn’t mean I agree with everything he’s doing lately.”

Yet when DeSantis appeared on Fox News on Tuesday night, he struck a less generous tone: “He used to say how great of a governor I was. Then I win a big victory and all of a sudden, you know, he had different opinions. So you can take that for what it’s worth.”

DeSantis in several interviews promoting the book sidestepped questions about whether he wrote it to outline a potential platform for a presidential campaign, stressing that he wants it serve as a framework and “blueprint” for other states to confront what’s going on in Washington, D.C.

One of the longer sections in the book deals with DeSantis handling of the Covid-19 response, where he resisted lockdowns and vaccine mandates and pushed to open schools in the fall of 2020. DeSantis acknowledges he initially went along with some restrictions in the early days of the pandemic, but he delves into his growing skepticism at the advice being offered by federal authorities and how he began to dive into studies and reports about the virus from other countries.

DeSantis, however, does not go into the behind-the-scenes debate that occurred in his own administration over whether to impose a statewide mask mandate, a move that the governor rejected.

In his book, DeSantis lamented that the first book that he wrote in 2011, “Dreams from Our Founding Fathers: First Principles in the Age of Obama,” “did not garner much attention, and it never hit the best seller list.”

During a promotional stop on Tuesday night in the GOP enclave of The Villages, DeSantis remarked that his new book was now topping the Amazon book sales chart.

“Just think every book that’s sold is going to annoy CNN a little bit more and a little bit more,” he quipped.

Bhiwani Killings: Police book protesters for blocking Delhi-Jaipur highway

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: Police have booked around 150 people for blocking the Delhi-Jaipur highway on Tuesday while opposing the arrest of Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar in the abduction-murder of two men from Rajasthan.

The incident had occurred during the mahapanchayat organised by Hindu groups in support of Monu, who runs a cow protection group and is among the nine people booked in the case by Rajasthan police.

The FIR was registered on Tuesday night under sections 147 (riots), 149 (unlawful assembly) and 283 (obstruction in public way) of the IPC and Section 8 B of the National Highway Act 1956 at Manesar police station, the police said on Wednesday.

The protest was held following claims that the Rajasthan police team was conducting a raid at Monu’s residence in Manesar village.

According to a complaint filed by sub-inspector Deepak, posted at Manesar police station, about 150 persons had blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway on Tuesday due to which a large number of vehicles were stranded on both sides and commuters had to face a lot of problems.

The complainant has named four of the accused in his complaint. They were identified as Arun Yadav, Umed Yadav, Monu Yadav and Kailash Yadav.

A senior police officer said that action will be taken as per the law.

Nasir and Junaid, both residents of Ghatmeeka village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, were allegedly abducted by cow vigilantes on February 15 and their bodies were found in a charred car in Loharu in Haryana’s Bhiwani the next day.

The family members of the deceased had named five men, including Monu, in their complaint to the police. Four others were also booked later.

One Rinku Saini has been arrested, while others are on the run.
