‘Congress lacks maturity’: Basavaraj Bommai’s response to ‘betrayal’ barb

Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday slammed the Congress for saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has betrayed the people of the state on the issue of increasing the quota of reservations.

“The matter is in the Supreme Court and the statement made by Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala is an attempt to prejudice the court and thereby obstruct justice.

“The Constitution never contemplated reservation based on the basis of religion. The architect of the Constitution of India, B.R. Ambedkar, made this speech at the time of introduction of the 1st amendment,” Bommai said.

The Chief Minister’s remarks came after Karnataka unit Congress president D.K. Shivakumar and party’s Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala in a press conference made charges against the BJP.

“Your statement as to why an undertaking was given before the court is hilarious and obviously shows your lack of maturity in understanding judicial proceedings,” Bommai said, responding to the Congress’ claims.

He said “the Congress is always busy practicing appeasement politics and has never understood to provide social justice”.

“In fact, the government is ably justifying its stand by engaging senior advocates. We are hopeful of securing justice from the Supreme Court,” he added.

The Congress in Karnataka earlier on Wednesday said that the ruling BJP government in the state had betrayed people on the issue related to the quota of reservations.

Shivakumar and Surjewala said that Lingayats and Vokkaligas would not get any extra quota of reservation as claimed by the BJP.

Addressing a press conference, Shivakumar said “the great betrayal of BJP has come to light yet again”.

“The Bommai government has failed to submit an affidavit defending the increase in the quota of reservations. The BJP has betrayed, insulted Lingayat, Vokkaliga, SC, ST and minority communities,” he said.

“The government has told the court that it will re-implement the reservations of 2002. Lingayats are going to continue in the 3B category and Vokkaligas will continue under the 3A category,” Shivakumar said.

Mangaluru: A major accident was averted at a helipad in Udupi district of Karnataka on Thursday where Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai arrived enroute to his visit to Kollur Mookambika temple.

A fire broke out near the Areshiroor helipad during the take-off of a helicopter after the Chief Minister’s convoy had left the helipad to the temple.

Sources said the blaze, believed to have originated from the helicopter fan, was extinguished by the fire service personnel before it could cause any major damage.

The situation was quickly brought under control by the fire brigade.

Bommai, accompanied by his wife, continued with their trip to the Kollur temple and offered pooja.

Bengaluru: Election officials on Friday intercepted and checked Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai’s car when he was on his way to a temple in Chikkaballapura district.

The Model Code of Conduct is in force in the State, which goes to polls on May 10.

A video showing officials checking the vehicle has gone viral on social media.

According to sources, Bommai was heading to Ghati Subramanya temple in a private car — as he had surrendered his official car on the day the election schedule was announced on Wednesday — when it was stopped at Hosahudya checkpost.

“Nothing objectionable was found, and officials then allowed the vehicle to go, and the Chief Minister continued his journey,” sources added.

Modi responds to Bommai’s tweet on Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway

Bengaluru: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday responded to a tweet on a drone shot posted on Twitter by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai of the new Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway with the high-speed train Vande Bharat Express passing underneath a road over bridge section of the 10-lane expressway.

“What a view! 10-lane Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway alongside Vande Bharat Express, a visual depicting the story of world-class infrastructure and unprecedented growth in Karnataka. Under PM Narendra Modi, our double engine government is working wonders in the state,” Bommai wrote while posting a video clip on his Twitter handle on Friday.

On Saturday, re-tweeting the Karnataka Chief Minister’s tweet, PM Modi said: “Our people deserve the best possible infrastructure, which our government will always work hard to provide. Our strides in infra creation have been widely lauded.”

The work on the Expressway project started in two phases around three years ago — in May 2019, and December 2019. However, due to Covid-induced constraints, little progress could be made.

The expressway is expected to be inaugurated and opened in March 2023. This project under Bharatmala Pariyojana (BMP) had a prior deadline of October 2022.

The Rs 8,000-crore project is expected to bring down the travel time between some key Karnataka cities from 3 hours to 90 minutes and less.
