DeSantis appoints political backers to new Disney oversight board

    florida legislature disney 08178

Disney has already said publicly it is not planning a legal challenge to the DeSantis-championed legislation, which also stripped the company of its ability to operate its own airport or nuclear power plant — authority it has never used.

It’s the end of a nearly yearlong political fight after DeSantis called a special session in April 2022 to do away with the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the name of the special district that gave Disney self-governing status, after the entertainment giant issued a statement opposing legislation that banned the discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms up until third grade. The bill was prominently referred to as “Don’t Say Gay.”

The most prominent name DeSantis appointed Monday to the board of the district, which the new law renames the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, is Bridget Ziegler, a conservative education activist who was a major backer of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. She is also a DeSantis-endorsed Sarasota County School Board member and co-founder of “Mom’s for Liberty,” a group that helps train and recruit conservatives to run for school boards.

Her husband, Christian, was recently elected chair of the Republican Party of Florida.

DeSantis picked Tampa attorney Martin Garcia to serve as the board’s new chairman. Garcia runs the investment firm Pinehill Capital Partners, which gave a DeSantis’ aligned political committee $50,000.

DeSantis also appointed Brian Aungst Jr., a prominent Pinellas County Republican attorney who DeSantis previously appointed to the 6th circuit judicial nominating commission; Mike Sasso, a Winter Park attorney who DeSantis has appointed to a handful of boards over the years; and Ron Peri, an Orlando-area businessman who runs The Gathering, a ministry focused on “discipleship and outreach to men.”

State Rep. Anna Eskamani, an Orlando Democrat who has been a leading critic of the changes, blasted the new board.

“It’s absolutely wild to see a self-proclaimed capitalist like DeSantis celebrate the government takeover of a private board which is exactly what the governor did today,” she said.

She specifically noted that Garcia’s company gave $50,000 to DeSantis and his name appeared on records tied to the administration’s search for local state attorneys who espouse progressive political beliefs. The search ultimately led to the suspension of Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren.

“It’s important to note that the bulk of today’s appointees are extreme and political donors,” Eskamani added.

On a flight from Stockholm to Los Angeles, a passenger suffers a cardiac arrest. But he is very fortunate in misfortune.

STOCKHOLM – A serious medical incident occurred on a scheduled flight from Stockholm to Los Angeles. A passenger suffers cardiac arrest while flying on his birthday. But in his distress, an unexpected rescue overtakes him. Heart specialists happen to be on board who saved the man’s life, as pilot Henrik Nielsen explains to ekstrabladet.dk in an interview about his career.

Man suffers cardiac arrest on plane with 56 doctors on board

Nielsen describes the situation: “That was the worst possible timing. Everything was so far away. We looked for the nearest airport but it was four hours away.” So the on-board staff took immediate first-aid measures, as stern.de previously reported. The staff is not always so caring, as shown by an airplane accident in which the crew exited the plane before the passengers.

But when the other passengers became aware of the situation, the almost hopeless situation quickly took a turn for the better. Because 56 doctors who were on their way to a medical congress in the USA flew with them on exactly this flight.

Cardiac specialists rush to the rescue of man on flight in cardiac arrest

There were also heart specialists among the passengers, who are optimally trained for precisely such situations. So the doctors quickly took care of the emergency. Nielsen explains: “They stabilized his health and then explained to us in detail what was wrong with the man”.

The man was able to continue the flight and land safely with the other passengers on the ground for further treatment. But instead of going to the emergency room, he went to his family to celebrate his 40th birthday with them. Thanks to the treatment and diagnosis on board, however, according to the doctors, all that is needed is a visit to a specialist at a later date. In Madrid a pilot had recently even left the plane because the birth of his child was imminent.

  • Bengal: English question paper appears on social media; state board rules out leak

Bengal: English question paper appears on social media; state board rules out leak

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Purported image of a few pages of the English second language question paper was circulated on social media, sometime after the class 10 state board examinations began in West Bengal on Friday, the second day of the exams.

The image of the question paper was uploaded on WhatsApp from an exam centre in Malda district, Education Minister Bratya Basu said.

West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) President Ramanuj Ganguly said it cannot be termed a leak as only three of the 16 pages of the question paper were circulated on WhatsApp one and a half hours after the three-hour-long exam started at 12 noon.

“How can it be called a leak? The candidates were inside the exam centres and the exams were already in progress. You can describe it as an attempt by someone to sabotage the smooth conduct of the examination process. The board will not treat the issue lightly,” he said when contacted by PTI.

Ganguly, who is touring exam centres in various districts since Friday, said the board has requested the state administration to trace the origin of this WhatsApp post which was later forwarded many times.

“The image of the question paper was circulated from an exam centre in Malda district. As stated by the Board president, I also think it is an act of sabotage. The board President will probably submit a report by tomorrow,” the education minister told reporters on the sidelines of an event.

A guardian of an examinee in a north Kolkata school, who got the image on her WhatsApp number, said it was forwarded from one of her acquaintances in Murshidabad district.

Altogether 6,98,627 candidates are writing papers in 2,867 centres in the Madhyamik Examination conducted by the WBBSE. The exams began on February 23 and will continue till March 4.

In 2022, a purported image of the English question paper similarly surfaced on social media but the Board had said it was fake with no resemblance to the original one.

In past editions of the Madhyamik exams between 2017 and 2019, there had been similar instances when images of purported question papers of English, Physical Science and other subjects circulated on social media after the start of the exams. However, each time they did not tally with the original.

  • In view of Class 10 board exams, street boycott call in Darjeeling suspended

In view of Class 10 board exams, street boycott call in Darjeeling suspended

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Hamro Party founded by Ajay Edwards on Wednesday suspended the call for street boycott in Darjeeling on Thursday in view of the Class 10 examinations being conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Examination (WBBSE) starting on that day.

Explaining the rationale behind suspending the boycott call for the time-being, a Hamro Party leader said that the call for boycott of streets was being interpreted by the ruling Trinamool Congress and the administration as equivalent to a strike, which was creating confusion among the people, especially the examinees and their guardians.

Hence, to allay the fear on this count, the boycott call has been withdrawn.

The call for boycott of streets for 12 hours on Thursday was given by Hamro Party, supported by Gorkha Janmukti Morcha and estranged Trinamool leader Binoy Tamang in support of the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state, as well as condemning the recent special motion that was passed in the state Assembly against attempts to divide the state.

On Tuesday, Edwards, Gurung and six other members of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) staged a 24-hour fasting agitation in support of the separate statehood demand.

From that agitation dais, Edwards gave the 12-hour ‘boycott the streets’ call.

Soon after that call was given, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said that her government will not tolerate such strike attempts at any cost.

She had also threatened strong administrative and police action if there were attempts to observe the strike in demand of division of the state.

Recently, a new triangular political equation has evolved as GJM chief Bimal Gurung, Binoy Tamang and Ajay Edwards have come together raising fresh demand for a separate Gorkhaland state.

  • Centre decides to take over 123 Delhi Waqf Board properties; Won’t allow it, says chairman Khan

Centre decides to take over 123 Delhi Waqf Board properties; Won’t allow it, says chairman Khan

    [ad_1]

Delhi: The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has decided to take over 123 properties of the Delhi Waqf Board, including mosques, dargahs and graveyards, evoking a sharp reaction from board chairman and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan.

Khan asserted that he will not allow the central government to take over the Waqf properties.

The deputy land and development officer, in a letter to the board on February 8, informed it of the decision to “absolve” it from all matters pertaining to the 123 Waqf properties.

The Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the central ministry said the two-member committee headed by Justice (retired) S P Garg on the issue of denotified Waqf properties in its report submitted that no representation or objection was received by it from the Delhi Waqf Board.

The committee was formed by the government of India on the order of the Delhi High Court, according to the L&DO letter.

The L&DO said the Delhi Waqf Board was the main stakeholder/affected party to whom the opportunity was given by the committee. However, it did not appear before the committee or filed any representation or objection regarding 123 properties.

“It is evident from the above facts that Delhi Waqf Board does not have any stake in the listed properties, neither have they shown any interest in the properties nor filed any objections or claims. It is, therefore, decided to absolve Delhi Waqf Board from all matters pertaining to ‘123 Waqf Properties’,” said the L&DO letter.

Physical inspection of all 123 properties will now be carried out by the L&DO.

According to Khan, the L&DO has pasted notices at 123 properties, which has caused “widespread anxiety, fear and resentment” among the Muslim community.

“We have already raised our voice in the court on 123 Waqf properties, our Writ Petition No.1961/2022 is pending in the High Court.

“Some people are spreading lies about it, the proof of this is in front of all of you. We will not allow anyone to occupy the properties of the Waqf Board,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

The DWB chairman in a reply to the Deputy Land and Development Officer of the central ministry on Friday said that the Delhi Waqf Board had already filed a petition in the high court in January 2022 against the formation of a two-member committee on the basis of whose report the action has been initiated by the ministry.

Khan said that the committee was informed on April 12 last year about Waqf Board’s petition in the high court, challenging its formation and asking it to defer its proceedings until a final order was passed by the court. The matter is pending in the high court.

He also said that before the two-member committee, a one-member panel was formed whose report was rejected without giving any reason. Also, the government of India had allotted one of the 123 properties to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) on permanent basis, after which the Waqf Board had approached the high court.

“Two-member committee has already submitted its report. However, no such report is shared with the Delhi Waqf Board. Hence, you are requested to share a complete set of the report with the Delhi Waqf Board urgently,” Khan said.

He claimed that there was no direction to constitute a two-member committee by the high court in its order dated August 20, 2014.

These 123 properties are used by the Muslim community. The day-to-day management of these 123 properties was done by Mutawallis or the management committees appointed by the Delhi Waqf Board, he said.

The Delhi Waqf Board has a statutory right under Section 32 of the Waqf Act, 1995, to exercise the powers of general supervision, administration and control over these properties, he asserted.

According to the Waqf Act, all the Waqf properties vest in the concerned Waqf Board, which in the present case, is Delhi Waqf Board, Khan said.

The Waqf nature of the 123 properties was “innate” as all were religious structures like mosques, dargahs and graveyards. Some of them were given to the Delhi Waqf Board’s predecessor – ‘Sunni Majlis Auqaf – by the British ruler, he added.

Only Secondary, Senior Secondary teaching staff to report back on Feb-20: Officials

Big Update Regarding Reopening of Schools: Board Officials

Srinagar, Feb 17 (KNO): Amid confusion among the teachers of the School Education Department regarding reporting back to their respective institutions after the winter vacations, officials Friday said only teachers of Secondary and Secondary Schools will have to report on February-20.

The official said that as per the instructions, the teaching staff of High and Higher Secondary Schools will have to report back to their respective schools on February-20.

According to the news agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO), the official said, “There is no mention of resumption of duties for primary school teaching staff. So it is clear that they would not have to report on February-20.”

“However, such teaching staff may be ordered to report back to their respective institutions a few days earlier for streamlining the things,” the official said.

Earlier in November-2022, the School Education Department had said, “The Teaching staff of High and Higher Secondary Schools shall report back to their respective schools on February-20-2023, so that they remain available for making arrangements regarding preparation of ensuing examinations.”

”All teachers shall remain available on demand for any online guidance of students during vacation period. Any default on part of the Head of the Schools or Teaching staff in observance of the above schedule shall attract strict action under Rules,” it reads—(KNO)
