Unhappy with Kerala HC order on wild tusker, protesters in Idukki block traffic

    [ad_1]

Kochi: Angry protesters, including children and women, from 10 villages in the hilly district of Idukki on Thursday are out on the streets, blocking traffic on the Kochi-Dhanushkodi highway.

This highway passes through Idukki and the protesters are unhappy with the Kerala High Court’s Wednesday decision involving wild tusker ‘Arikomban’ and two other rogue elephants causing destruction to life and properties of people in these affected villages.

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday warned the state of strict action if it found that the area in the Idukki district where these wild tuskers, including ‘Arikomban’, were roaming had been an elephant habitat before the tribals were resettled there.

The division bench, according to the protesters, instead of helping them, called for records and reports on the resettlement of tribal people in the area back in 2000. The court said, “If it was an elephant habitat, you had no business resettling people there and putting them in danger. The court said that resettling people in an elephant habitat was the root of the entire problem.”

“We will examine it. If it was an elephant habitat, then your policymakers went way off the board. If people were resettled there despite being aware of this fact, we will come down heavily on those responsible.

“Errors in history can be corrected later in time. We need to find whether the mistake happened and if yes, correct it,” the bench said, and declined to issue any direction in the interim for capture and captivity of the wild tuskers, including ‘Arikomban’.

The feature of Arikomban (translated in Malayalam as Aari-rice and Komban-tusker) is it attacks ration shops and houses for rice.

The villagers are unhappy with the court decision as it said that it will constitute a five-member committee that would decide whether to capture the wild elephant and turn it into a captive tusker or relocate it to interior areas of the forest.

It further said that till the panel came to a decision by the next week, the tusker was not to be captured and put in captivity, but allowed tranquilising for a limited purpose of radio-collaring it to track its movements.

“We are not going to stop our protests and we will do it, only when some concrete things come out, as we are fed up living in constant fear. Lives are lost and properties are being destroyed,” said a group of angry protesters.

Meanwhile, state Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran said the people have the right to protest as the Court’s directive complicated things.

“The state will go forward exploring all the legal remedies and it will seek legal recourse,” said Saseendran.

Rahul disqualification: Youth Congress workers block Delhi-Jaipur Highway, burn tyres

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: Many Youth Congress workers on Saturday blocked the Delhi-Jaipur Highway here and burnt tyres in protest against the disqualification of party leader Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha.

The party workers led by Haryana Youth Congress chief Divyanshu Budhiraja reached near Kherki Daula toll plaza at around 12:30 pm and raised slogans against the BJP government.

“The Centre has cancelled the membership of Rahul Gandhi to suppress the voice of the Opposition. We will protest on the streets against the dictatorial decision of the BJP government which is scared of the support received by Gandhi-led ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’,” Budhiraja said.

The Gurugram police reached the protest site and detained one of the protesters.

“Vikas Parmar alias Lala, a resident of Rohtak, was detained. He was released later,” a police officer said.

Following the complaint of ASI Yogender Kumar, an FIR was registered against about 20 protesters under sections 147 (riots), 283 (obstruction in public way), 341 (wrongful confinement) of the IPC at the Kherki Daula police station, he said.

“A case was registered on Saturday against those who blocked the Delhi-Jaipur Highway. One of them was arrested while action will be taken against others,” Inspector Rajender Kumar, SHO, Kherki Daula police station said.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case. The disqualification will bar Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction.

Meanwhile, former BJP MP Sudha Yadav accused the Gandhi scion of making unwarranted comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during several occasions on both national and international platforms.

“The conduct of Rahul Ganbdhi in this case simply shows his arrogance. He has made unwarranted remarks against the prime minister in national and global fora,” she said at a press conference here.

Countering the charges, Congress leader Captain Ajay Yadav claimed it was the
pre-plan of the saffron party and that the Union dispensation “cannot face the truth” as shown by Gandhi.

  • SDH Uri Left With Only 3 Ambulances, All 4 in Medical Block, As 7 Ambulances Scrapped Last Month

    [ad_1]

    Zaffer Iqbal

Uri, Mar 14 (GNS): Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is left with only three ambulances, even as the whole medical block total four vehicles, after seven ambulances were scrapped by the authorities last month.

A health official at SDH Uri told GNS that they are facing huge difficulties in managing the things, particularly with regard to referral of patients as there is an acute dearth of ambulances in the medical block. “There are only three ambulances available at SDH Uri and one ambulance at NTPHC Kamalkote Uri”, he said adding all in all there is a total of four ambulances available in the whole Medical block – Uri.

He said the ambulances of PHC Mohura, NTPHC Garkote, NTPHC Nambla and NTPHC Isham and 3 of SDH Uri were condemned last month and all these ambulances were sent back to the department.

He further said Medical Block Uri consists of almost 40 health centers and these centres are located in far off villages of Uri. “In emergency cases when an ambulance goes from SDH Uri to bring patients from different health centers or villages and if a patient needs to be shifted for further treatment, he is shifted from Uri but the patients too are suffering due to shortage of ambulances”, he said.

He said that even as Block Medical Officer (BMO) has intimated the issue to higher ups, there is nothing being done regarding the matter as of now.

Meanwhile a delegation of locals told GNS that Uri town is one of the far-off hamlets of Kashmir and Sub-division Uri which spans over 100 plus villages and majority of the population are living in tough terrain due to hilly area with nearly 40 villages of the Uri located on Line of Control.

They said if the government has introduced many schemes regarding better medical facilities, then why is a remote area(s) like Uri being neglected. “We frequently witness road accidents and wild animal attacks, so in such a scenario availability of prompt ambulance services becomes altogether important”, they said.

Meanwhile the higher-ups did not respond to any calls despite repeated attempts made by GNS. (GNS)

  • Biden administration moves to block JetBlue’s $3.8B Spirit takeover

Biden administration moves to block JetBlue’s $3.8B Spirit takeover

    [ad_1]

    image

In an appearance Tuesday on CNN, Buttigieg acknowledged the unusual step his department is taking, saying DOT has “generally not gotten involved in these merger cases, but that’s changing today. It is so important to make sure that passengers have choices, that they have access to low fares and that they have access to competition, and yet we’ve seen less and less and less of that competition over the years.”

“We’ve had a lot of authorities when it is comes to competition, but frankly over recent years the Department of Transportation hasn’t used those authorities very much. I think that it needs to change,” Buttigieg continued.

In the lawsuit, DOJ says the merger, which will remove seats from every plane Spirit operates, would be especially harmful to “cost-conscious” travelers. “Fewer seats means fewer passengers — and higher prices for those who can still afford to make their way onto the plane,” the suit read.

The dual moves open a new high-stakes opportunity for the Biden administration to make good on its pledge to boost competition across the economy. DOJ scored a key victory last fall in blocking the merger of publishing giants Penguin Random House and Simon and Schuster. However, it also lost challenges to a health care technology deal, a merger of two sugar producers and a deal between two national security contractors.

“Threats to competition like those alleged here are particularly likely to harm working- and middle-class families, who may struggle to withstand the price increases that consolidation often brings,” Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta said at press conference on Tuesday. “The department’s commitment to ensuring economic opportunity and fairness means holding those concerns in the front of our minds.”

The lawsuit has been looming over the pending merger for months and has been expected since the companies inked their deal last June. The companies have pledged to defend the case in court, and while the lawsuit could take a year or more to play out, they have until the middle of next year to close the deal.

JetBlue and Spirit have argued that their deal would increase rather than harm competition, and that it is necessary in order to compete with bigger rivals American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Southwest Airlines. But those arguments ultimately were not convincing enough to avoid a lawsuit.

In its suit, DOJ argued that the merger would “stop future competition before it starts,” noting that it could significantly curtail competition on several routes. It also said the merger will remove an important check against “coordinated behavior by eliminating Spirit’s aggressive, disruptive business model from the marketplace and by placing all of Spirit’s planes and crews under JetBlue’s control.”

Last year, Spirit attempted to merge with fellow low-cost carrier Frontier but failed to drum up enough shareholder support for the deal. In the complaint, DOJ noted that aviation and economic consultants hired by Spirit warned against the transaction and included an image of a slide that Spirit presented to shareholders warning against a potential Spirit-JetBlue merger.

While there are other ultra low cost carriers in the market, they won’t be able to fill Spirit’s void. Allegiant and Frontier’s limited frequency “makes it difficult for them to gain traction in new markets, which in turn limits their ability to effectively compete,” the DOJ wrote in its complaint.

JetBlue was also in the early stages of competing with Spirit’s business model, which the suit highlights. “The new unbundled ‘Blue Basic’ fare gave customers greater choices for which features they wanted to pay JetBlue. This allowed JetBlue to compete more effectively with Spirit for ‘[h]ighly price-conscious travelers … [who had shown] they [were] willing to give up some of the experience for the lowest fares possible,’” the suit read.

In an attempt to address DOJ’s concerns, JetBlue had offered to sell off the entirety of Spirit’s operations at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts, as well as several slots at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida.

Not on the table was an offer to abandon JetBlue’s Northeast Alliance with American Airlines, which allows the two airlines to largely combine operations at several major Northeast airports, which the DOJ challenged in court last year and is awaiting a ruling from a federal judge in Boston.

However, while the DOJ is concerned about the airlines’ overlapping routes in multiple markets, there was no amount of divestitures that would have made the department comfortable with the deal, according to a person with knowledge of the DOJ’s thinking.

The DOJ challenged the American partnership as a de facto merger in the Northeast market and in combination with the Spirit deal, sees it as essentially a three-way merger on those routes.

According to the complaint, which cites the companies’ internal documents, when Spirit enters a new market, or city pair, prices drop on average 17 percent across all airlines, and when it leaves a market, prices jump an average of 30 percent.

In a statement released on Monday, JetBlue said it is three times more effective in lowering fares than Spirit when it enters a new market.

The airlines maintain that despite flying planes with fewer seats, they will not have to raise fares. When asked for details about how the merger could drive down prices, JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said in a recent interview with POLITICO that customers would still save because planes in the new, combined airline will spend more time in the air and less time on the ground.

“One of the benefits of bringing these two airlines together is we can increase the utilization of the airline,” Hayes said. “You have more options to fly that next route to increase the length of time in the day that you’re flying.”

In the same interview Spirit CEO Ted Christie acknowledged that fares on some routes could increase if the merger is approved. But he argued that the new airline would lead to decreased fare costs overall.

On Monday, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody reached a settlement with the two airlines, including a commitment to bring new flights and jobs to the state.

Mia McCarthy contributed to this report.

  • China continues to block efforts to determine Covid’s origins, lawmakers say

China continues to block efforts to determine Covid’s origins, lawmakers say

    [ad_1]

    virus outbreak china 73027

Other U.S. agencies, though, have said they think it was probably due to natural transmission from animals to humans.

“We have so few facts that, inevitably, different agencies are going to arrive at different conclusions,” Himes said.

Himes is the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. His view was shared by the panel’s chair, Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

“There’s no direct evidence, we don’t have China admitting it, we don’t have Wuhan Lab handing these things over,” Turner said, referring to the city that is home to several laboratories and where the virus first circulated in late 2019.

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) also blamed China’s refusal to be open and honest about Covid-19 for continuing questions about its origin.

“If this virus had originated virtually anywhere else, we would have had world scientists there,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.”

He also told host Shannon Bream: “You know, at the end of the day, we’ve got to keep looking, and we’ve got to make sure, in terms of future pandemics, that we can have access to where the source of these diseases originate a lot earlier on.”

Debate over Covid-19’s origins has political implications, with the latest reports fueling demands in conservative circles for China to be punished in one way or another for unleashing it. More than a million deaths in the United States have been attributed to the coronavirus; the worldwide total is approaching 7 million.

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said last Monday that the U.S. government still had not reached a consensus on how the pandemic started. President Joe Biden did not address the subject last week.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Energy Department report supported the view he took back in 2020 when he was part of the Trump administration.

“Make no mistake, this is a Chinese virus that came from the laboratory,” he said on “Fox News Sunday.”

Pompeo also asserted that U.S. funding for international research might have played a part in the development of the virus — a theory that Anthony Fauci, the now-retired top pandemic medical adviser, rejected when it first surfaced — and that China’s leadership had made it difficult to know “the full scope” of what occurred by destroying documents and censoring journalists.

A different perspective on the various origin theories came from Leana Wen, former health commissioner of the city of Baltimore and a professor at George Washington University.

“I think at this point there is circumstantial evidence on both sides,” she said on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” “but there is one thing that the intelligence community has found and, in fact, has been unanimously saying since early on, which is that this was not intentional. This was not a bio weapon or something that China or scientists or whatever politicians or political leaders were trying to do.”
