BJP leaders praise BBC when it suits them: Owaisi on IT raids

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Wednesday attacked the central government over the I-T department’s survey operation at BBC offices, saying when it suited the BJP during the Emergency period (1975-77) their leaders used to praise the foreign broadcaster.

He stressed that the freedom of press was very important for a functional democracy, while concurring with the statement issued by the Editors Guild of India, condemning the raids.

The AIMIM chief expressed hope that BBC will not be pressurised and will continue to tell the truth.

“When it suited the BJP during Emergency period, their leaders used to praise the BBC. I am sure that the BBC will continue to tell the truth to the people. The timing is absolutely wrong and that is why the Editors Guild issued a right statement condemning the raids,” the Hyderabad MP told reporters here reacting to queries on the I-T survey against BBC India.

The Income Tax department survey against BBC India continued for the second day today with sleuths understood to be making copies of electronic and paper-based financial data of the organisation.

The tax department had launched surveys on Tuesday at the Delhi and Mumbai offices of the media house along with at least two linked premises as part of a probe into alleged tax evasion against the British broadcaster in India.

The action comes weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary, “India: The Modi Question”.

Reacting to another query on Centre’s decision to appoint retired Supreme Court judge S Abdul Nazeer, who was part of the 2019 Ayodhya verdict, as Governor of Andhra Pradesh, Owaisi said there is no constitutional bar on appointing anyone to the honourable post of Governor, but wondered why the retired judge accepted the post.

“Now if some doubts arise in the minds of common people that the biggest litigant in this country is the government. Now, after your retirement, you are given a post by the same government, who is the biggest litigant and you were presiding over that litigation… so, some doubts might arise in the mind of a common man. I don’t know whether those doubts are genuine or not,” he said.

“So, these doubts should not have arisen and this will lead to so many questions in future. I don’t know why the honourable retired judge has accepted this post because as a judge he was allotted a house and every facility. It is for the BJP to answer this question.”

Justice (retired) Nazeer was part of the five-judge Constitution bench which had in November 2019 cleared the way for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) and directed the Centre to allot a five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for a mosque in a different location.

Owaisi also welcomed the top court’s appointment of its former judge Justice L Nageswara Rao to oversee the upcoming elections of the office bearers of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).

“It is a good thing. HCA elections should be held at the earliest. If elections are held genuinely, meritorious young cricketers of Hyderabad who are performing well will get opportunities,” he added.

Kill Tipu Sultan’s followers or chase them out: Karnataka BJP chief

    [ad_1]

Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Nalin Kumar Kateel asked the public on Wednesday to “kill” all “ardent followers” of Tipu Sultan, the 18th Century ruler of Mysore. Kateel further said that followers of the Sultan should be chased out and sent to forests.

“They (Congress) allowed celebrating Tipu Jayanti which was not required, and spoke disgracefully about Savarkar,” he had said.

Addressing BJP supporters in Yelaburga, Koppal district today, Kateel said, “We are devotees of Lord Rama, Lord Hanuman. We offer prayers and obeisance to Lord Hanuman, and we not Tipu’s descendants. Let’s send Tipu’s descendants back home”.

“I ask the people here whether you offer prayers to Lord Hanuman or Tipu. Then will you send those who are ardent followers of Tipu to forest? Think about it. Do you think Karnataka needs Hanuman devotees or descendants of Tipu? I am issuing a challenge — those who are ardent followers of Tipu should not remain alive on this fertile soil,” he said.

Earlier in February, Kateel stoked controversy by claiming that the coming assembly election in Karnataka was a “Tipu vs Savarkar” one.

“They are allowed to celebrate Tipu Jayanti, which is not required in this state. I challenge Siddaramaiah (senior Congress Karnataka leader), next elections are between Tipu and Savarkar. Let us discuss, come on if this country requires a patriot like Savarkar or Tipu?” he asked.

Last month, Nalin raised quite a few eyebrows while at the launch of ‘Booth Vijay Abhiyan’ in Mangaluru when he demeaned water shortage, sewage problems, and roads filled with potholes as “minor problems”.

Assembly elections are due on 224 seats on Karnataka in April-May, in which the BJP is hoping to win a second term in power.

Didn’t allow BJP agenda to prevail in J&K during our coalition govt: Mehbooba Mufti

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Feb 15: Peoples Democratic Party president and former chief minister, Mehbooba Mufti said that during the coalition government of PDP and BJP, she didn’t allow BJP agenda to prevail in Jammu and Kashmir and that she doesn’t take statements of Home Minister Amit Shah seriously as those are “Jumlas” only.

Addressing a news conference, Mehbooba, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) appealed to the people to take control of their land as it belongs to them and in absence of the government, people including Mohalla Committees, Panchayats and others should take control of their land in respective areas.

“People were earlier being called anti-national and now they are being called encroachers,” she said while replying to a query.

She added people are being suppressed by one way or the other, however, sentiments of people about Kashmir resolution cannot be jailed like the way people, especially youth have been jailed and shifted to outside.

“Those who have been jailed are being given bread and salt as food,” she said.

Reacting to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s interview yesterday, she said there are no facts in his statement, as he has himself admitted earlier that statements are just ‘Jumlas’.

“J&K State has been downgraded to Union Territory, the economy is at stake, but to divert the attention from main issues, J&K has become a focal point for them for this purpose,” she said.

On being asked about “Naya Kashmir” statement, she said employed people are being unemployed by throwing them out of departments, people including journalists are being jailed and houses are being demolished, which is Naya Kashmir.

On G-20 summit, she said that the summit at a time of raiding BBC offices and demolishing houses will have serious consequences for country’s reputation.

Mehbooba added that it is a tactic to demolish the houses of people to force them to join a particular party and get money from the rich people and nothing beyond that.

On PDP’s coalition with BJP, she said her father had taken a wise decision. “During the coalition government, we didn’t allow their agenda to prevail. We didn’t allow them to carry out any anti-people activity. People can criticize me for my steps, I am not BJP, but till the government was there, we didn’t allow their agenda to prevail,” she said—(KNO)

Basant Rath Details His BJP Joining, Blames Kashmir Political Class

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Senior IPS officer, Basant Rath, has hit left, right and centre to justify his joining the far-right BJP. In a write-up, he has attacked the separatists, Kashmir politics and the Congress and termed the Kashmir politicians as “conflict entrepreneurs” “theatre artists of Gupkar” who play “politics of identity capitalism” and politics of “Kashmir exceptionalism”.

    Basanth Rath
    Basant Kumar Rath

“I decided to quit the IPS and join BJP because I intend to challenge the political monopoly of the conflict entrepreneurs of Gupkar, Maisuma and Rajouri Kadal and help open up democratic space for our youth,” Rath wrong in a write up in the Outlook. “Because I wish to focus my energy and integrity to do in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh what Abdul Sattar Edhi did to health and education sectors in Pakistan.”

Rath who never went on central deputation and always remained within Jammu and Kashmir sees the erstwhile state as his karambhoomi. An IGP rank officer, he had face-offs with politicians as well as his bosses. More than once, the police registered cases against him.

His write up starts with this paragraph: “Because while hundreds of people lost their lives in Srinagar in a certain year, the then chief minister who did nothing to prevent those deaths, threw tantrums in Gupkar because he couldn’t get his daily quota of Rainbow-brand milk imported from Dubai.”

Another interesting paragraph is: “Because female students can’t help using tardy, overcrowded buses and matadors run by ill-behaved, abusive drivers; and they can’t help facing harassment, humiliation and monetary loot during their daily commute. And the vehicles are owned by businessmen who pay hefty bribes to cabbages masquerading as politicians.”

The write up talks about “dozens of politicians” who siphoned thousands of crores of rupees of taxpayers’ money to finance their business ventures in Bengaluru and Burz Khalifa. Besifdes, it said the politicians have encroached upon meadows in Gulmarg and Ganderbal; and grabbed public land in Bagat Parraypora, Bathindi and Nagrota to build palatial houses for their clan.

Apparently responding to the question Why I Decided To Quit The IPS And Join BJP, the senior IPS write. “Because these theatre artists of Gupkar play politics of identity capitalism to fool the innocent public, steal their votes and loot their hard-earned money. While in power, they preside over the health department that has blood on its hands, the blood of hundreds of toddlers who die in the children hospital in Srinagar in winters. While out of power, these politicians share requests for oxygen cylinders and blood donation on Twitter.” He adds: “Because some tall leaders play condolence politics in Jammu and Kashmir before polling and thank Pakistan after the elections. In public speeches in Sopore and Shopian, they’ll exhort the masses to stay away from polling booths, and to kill and to get killed in the name of Kashmiri exceptionalism; and away from public glare, they’ll use Pakistani money to build palatial houses in Hyderpora and Maisuma.”

Another reason of the poet-cops is: “Because cabbages are bad for the health of the political space in J and K. Because a clean divorce is healthier than a dirty marriage in one’s life.”

It is not known if his resignation has been accepted and if at all he has formally joined the ruling BJP.

“BJP Wants To Convert J&K Into Hindu-Majority State”: Dr Farooq Abdullah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Reacting to Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on the restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir, JKNC MP Farooq Abdullah on Monday said that they (the government) will give a truncated statehood after elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir will come up after assembly polls and that a call on the timing of elections will be taken by the Election Commission.

“I had clearly stated that statehood will be restored in Jammu and Kashmir after elections. Process of preparation of voters’ list is nearing completion in the UT. Now, the Election Commission has to take a call on elections,” Shah, in an exclusive interview with ANI, released on Tuesday, said.

To which Jammu and Kashmir’s former CM said that he thinks they (the government) don’t want to give statehood. “They will give truncated statehood after elections,” he added.

Abdullah also alleged that the motive behind the delimitation exercise, completed in UT, is to turn J-K into a Hindu majority state.

“They think that we are fools, but we are not. We know what their intention is, if this was not their intention, they would not have done delimitation as well, as the way they did. They want that it should be converted into a Hindu-majority state,” he added.

Earlier, in an interview with ANI, Shah also said that Article 370 pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir, which was abrogated by the BJP-led government in 2019, had harmed the country.

He said the way development is taking place in Jammu and Kashmir, terrorism is gradually ending.

“See all the figures, there is a lot of change in Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.

He went on to add that removing Article 370 has been on the agenda of BJP and Jan Sangh. He also referred to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the context of Article 370.

“Since 1950, it was on our agenda to remove Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. Today, the way Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing development and decrease in terrorism shows that changes that are coming,” he said.

Shah said those slamming the BJP should answer in whose tenure terrorism grew in Jammu and Kashmir.

“As far as elections are concerned, do they not remember the local body polls, these were held under our rule, these did not take place for 70 years. Three families were holding sway in Jammu and Kashmir and they are making noise…Farooq Abdullah had gone to England. In whose tenure, terrorism grew, who allowed it to grow, there should be an answer,” he said.

Opposition parties are joining hands to defeat BJP: NV Subhash

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: No political party has the capacity or the courage to fight Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as people’s support is increasing rapidly in Telangana, said BJP spokesperson NV Subhash.

No party has capacity to contest elections on its own against the BJP. The ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party led by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) is trying to enter into a pre-poll alliance with left parties and Congress.

The BJP leader further alleged that the BRS has a secret tie-up with AIMIM and continuing its appeasement policy towards Muslims.

Subhash pointed out that CPI leaders joined Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) leader Revanth Reddy in his padayatra at Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

“The latest instance was joining of local CPI leaders in the padyatra of TPCC president and MP Revanth Reddy in Bhadadri Kothagudem district. Revanth Reddy is using Haath se Haath Jodi” yatra to grab attention of Communist party of India (CPI) to win assembly elections,” he said.

“Political parties are joining hands to defeat the BJP government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has been developing the country,” Subhash added.

UP: Mother-daughter self-immolate in anti-encroachment drive; Oppn attacks BJP govt

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: A day after a mother-daughter duo died allegedly due to self-immolation during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat, police on Tuesday booked 39 people including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials and over a dozen cops on murder and other charges.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Maitha) Gyaneshwar Prasad has also been placed under suspension, said Inspector General of Police (Kanpur Range) Prashant Kumar.

Lekhpal Ashok Singh and bulldozer driver Deepak have been arrested so far, Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) BBGTS Murthy said.

The FIR has been registered on charges of murder, attempt to murder apart from mischief by killing or maiming cattle, mischief by fire with intent to destroy house, etc and intentional insult, Kumar told PTI over the phone.

He added that the bulldozer which was used in the demolition of the victims’ house has been seized.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak spoke to the bereaved family members, who were refusing to hand over the bodies for post-mortem, and assured them that their demands will be looked into. The bodies were later handed over for autopsy.

Heavy police deployment has been made in and around the village as tension prevailed after the deaths.

The family and the villagers were earlier demanding that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should speak to them. They also sought ex-gratia of Rs 5 crore and a government job to at least two members of the bereaved family, according to the IGP Kumar.

While talking to the victim’s sons Shivam and Ansh, Deputy CM Pathak said, “This is a very tragic and saddening incident… An FIR has been registered on murder charges against the accused. Strict action will be initiated and the guilty will be punished. Their generations will remember it.”

“You are all like my family members. I and the entire government are with you.” Pathak said adding that their demands will be looked into.

IG Kumar said stern action will be taken against the erring cops including station house officer (Rural) Dinesh Gautam who is likely to be placed under suspension very soon.

Besides Gautam, the SDM of Maitha, JCB driver Deepak, lekhpal (revenue officer) of Madauli Ashok Singh, three unnamed lekhpals, an unnamed kanungo (revenue official), and 12-15 police personnel have been booked.

A case of murder and attempt to murder has also been lodged against more than a dozen unnamed people, said sources.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the ruling BJP over the incident. In a tweet in Hindi, he said, “When the arrogance of power takes away the people’s right to live, it is called dictatorship.”

“This ‘bulldozer policy’ has become the face of the cruelty of this government. India does not accept this,” the former Congress chief said.

The opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) blamed the “insensitive” administration for the “murders” and hit out at the government for stopping a Samajwadi Party delegation from going to the village to express condolences to the victims’ family.

Due to tension prevailing in the village, they were stopped, a senior officer said.

The 11-member delegation included MLAs Manoj Pandey, Amitabh Bajpai, Vinod Chaturvedi, Pradeep Yadav and Mohd Hasan alias Rumi.

The video of the deputy chief minister speaking to the bereaved family was tweeted by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who alleged that the words of sympathy were only for a show.

“The BJP has cut off the part where the victims were putting forth their demands. This is the worst form of the BJP’s insensitivity,” Yadav said in a tweet in which victims’ family members were seen asking the Deputy CM for immediate arrest of SDM and others.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the victims’ family should get justice and strict action should be taken against the culprits.

“…the heart-rending incident of Kanpur is condemnable. We all have to raise our voice against this inhumane action. The victims’ family should get justice and strict action should be taken against the culprits,” Vadra said in a tweet in Hindi.

Pramila Dixit (45) and her daughter Neha (20) allegedly set themselves afire in a hut in the presence of police, district administration and revenue officials, who had gone to Madauli village in the Rura area of the district to remove encroachments from a “gram samaj” land, a police official said.

Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) BBGTS Murthy told reporters that Vishal Dixit had filed a complaint against Shivam Dixit, son of Pramila Dixit, alleging encroachment of ‘gram samaj’ land following which district administration team headed by SDM Gyaneshwar Prasad had gone there to remove the encroachment.

The encroachment was being removed by a bulldozer when the mother-daughter died after they immolated themselves, the SP added.

Additional Director General of Police (Kanpur zone) Alok Singh, along with Divisional Commissioner Raj Shekhar, also visited the village.
