BJP says CBI acting lawfully against corrupt, demands Kejriwal’s resignation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party over its street protests against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest, asserting that the CBI is acting lawfully against the “corrupt” and demanding CM Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation for the arrest of two of his ministers in cases of alleged corruption.

The law is taking its own course and probe agencies are working lawfully, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4.

The “kattar beimaan party” (hardcore dishonest party) respects neither courts, nor laws or people, he claimed, accusing Kejriwal of orchestrating the anarchic protests against Sisodia’s arrest.

If the AAP believes that the CBI’s action is driven by political malice as it has alleged, then it should have gone to court as the probe in the suspected corruption in the framing of excise policy had been going on for months.

Neither does Kejriwal abide by law nor he sacks his ministers involved in corruption, he said, noting that Satyendar Jain is behind bars for months in a money laundering case.

Jain has not received bail yet because courts believe that the charges against him are serious, the BJP leader said.

Two of his six ministers are now behind bars in corruption case, he noted and said Kejriwal should take moral responsibility and tender his resignation immediately. After all the chief minister is the first among equals and leads the Cabinet, he said.

With its “drama” and show of “anarchy”, the AAP has signalled that it will not let probe agencies do their work which amounts to obstructing the process of justice and contempt of court, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4 in the case of alleged irregularities and corruption in excise policy, now withdrawn.

The BJP leader described the AAP as “Arajak Apradh Party” (anarchic, criminal party) and said Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal seems to have taken oath on the Constitution to destroy it, he alleged, claiming that the “liquor scam” was perpetrated to fill his coffers.

A special CBI court on Monday remanded Sisodia in five-day custody of the central probe agency till March 4, a day after his arrest in the excise scam case.

Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers held protests in several states against the arrest in connection with alleged corruption in the now-scrapped excise policy relating to the sale of alcohol.

Bhatia said Sisodia’s alleged silence before his interrogators in the CBI custody speaks loudly that a scam has been perpetrated. They (AAP leaders) are in panick because the law’s long arms have caught hold of their corruption, he claimed.

New Delhi: The BJP on Monday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party over its street protests against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s arrest, asserting that the CBI is acting lawfully against the “corrupt” but the city’s ruling party does not seem to believe in law, Constitution and people.

With its “drama” and show of “anarchy”, the AAP has signaled that it will not let probe agencies do their work which amounts to obstructing the process of justice and contempt of court, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia told reporters after Sisodia was sent to the CBI remand till March 4 in the case of alleged irregularities and corruption in excise policy, now withdrawn.

  • Sisodia must be only education minister involved in liquor scam: BJP

Sisodia must be only education minister involved in liquor scam: BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia or other AAP leaders never answered questions related to suspected corruption in the liquor policy, the BJP said on Sunday, asserting that it believes there is merit in the case against the arrested leader.

Sisodia was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Sunday evening in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra alleged that Sisodia must be the only education minister in the world who is involved in liquor scam, and added the entire episode is an eye-opener and shocking.

He said Delhi minister Satyendar Jain, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, has been rejected bail as there is merit in the case against him despite the AAP’s claim of his innocence.

Similarly, the BJP believes that there is merit in the case against Sisodia, he said.

Patra called Sisodia “liquor minister” and accused him of several irregularities, including a hike in commission for wholesalers to make money for his party through the back door.

Patra also rejected the allegation that politics was behind the arrest, saying probe agencies and parties are two separate entities.

Probe agencies, the BJP leader said, do not work on emotion but look into technicalities and the AAP never answered technical questions about the excise policy its government had brought in the national capital.

He alleged that 45 mobile phones and other evidence were destroyed by the accused in the case.

He asserted that the BJP has zero tolerance for corruption and its fight against corruption will always be on.

Sisodia was arrested after nearly eight hours of questioning as his answers were not satisfactory, officials said.

The AAP leader arrived at the CBI headquarters around 11.12 am for the second round of questioning.

The AAP leader, the accused number one in the CBI FIR, was first questioned on October 17.

  • I don’t have a house, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP takes a dig

I don’t have a house, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP takes a dig

    [ad_1]

Nava Raipur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said he has never owned a house and noted that this experience had helped him “change” his Bharat Jodo Yatra and connect with the people.

Addressing the Congress plenary session in Nava Raipur in Chhattisgarh, Gandhi said he wanted everyone who joined the Yatra to feel that they were coming home.

He recalled the incident in 1977 when his family was preparing to leave their government accommodation.

“There was a strange atmosphere in the house. I went to mummy and asked her what happened. Ma told me that we are leaving the house.

“Till that time I used to think it was our house. So I asked my mother why we are leaving our house. Then my mom told me for the first time that it was not our house, but the government’s and we have to leave it now,” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi said he asked his mother Sonia Gandhi where they would go next. “‘Nahi maloom’ (don’t know) my mother said. I was taken aback. I used to think it was our house.

“52 years and I still don’t have a house. Our family house is in Allahabad and that is also not ours. I live at 12, Tughaq Lane but that is not my house,” he said.

Gandhi then spoke about his Yatra that was launched on September 7 last year in Kanyakumari, traversing 12 states and two Union Territories, and concluded in Kashmir in January-end .

“When I moved from Kanyakumari, I asked myself what is my responsibility… I came up with an idea… I told my people this 20-25 ft area around me is going to be my house for the next four months. This house will move with me.

“Whoever comes here- be it rich or poor, elderly or young, from whichever religion or state or from abroad or even an animal…. they should feel like they have come home..and while leaving, they should feel they are leaving their home… The day I did it, the Yatra changed,” Gandhi said.

The BJP, however, took a swipe at Gandhi, saying his remarks show the “sense of entitlement” in the Gandhi family as it enjoys “responsibility without power”.

“Rahul ji used to think that all the houses and cars he was using belonged to him. If you feel that the government’s house is your house, who can evict us – this is called the sense of entitlement,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters.

He said Gandhi undertook his Yatra only now, but BJP’s two prime ministers spent their life crisscrossing the country and learning about it as ‘pracharaks’.

“After 52 years of age, he is thinking what should be his responsibility… after giving up the Congress presidentship… Your motto and that of the Gandhi family is one – power without responsibility,” Patra said.

He said Mallikarjun Kharge is the Congress president, but the whole party plenary is focused on the members of the Gandhi family.

BJP ‘Mahila Morcha’ to reach out to women beneficiaries of govt schemes

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: With an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP’s ‘Mahila Morcha’ will launch a major outreach exercise from Monday by contacting women beneficiaries of various welfare schemes of the central government nationwide.

As part of efforts to connect with women, party members have targeted one crore of selfies with them in a year.

BJP’s Mahila Morcha head Vanathi Srinivasan said the party’s women’s wing will also launch an award ceremony in March in the name of late BJP veteran Sushma Swaraj to honour in every district 10 women who have made significant contributions in different fields.

She said the selfie exercise is part of the party’s efforts to connect with women.

Members of the party’s women wing will approach women voters in every district and tell them about the benefits of various government schemes, ranging from housing to cooking gas, toilets and opening bank accounts.

If these women have benefitted from any of these schemes, then party members will request them for a selfie with them, Srinivasan said, adding the entire exercise will be done through the NaMo app.

The programme will also help popularise these schemes among others, she said.

Over 25 crore women are believed to have benefited from the Jan Dhan scheme alone, under which bank accounts without any mandatory minimum balance are opened while the numbers of beneficiaries from other schemes also run into several crores.

Beneficiaries of various government schemes have been a targeted voting segment for the BJP, and their reach and popularity are believed to have played a role in the party’s electoral successes.

BJP will face defeat in Telangana Assembly election: Asaduddin Owaisi

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday stated that the Bharatiya Janata Party would see defeat in Telangana in the upcoming election like the previous ones.

Attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the AIMIM chief said that if the regional parties come together, BJP can be defeated.

“In Telangana, BJP lost the 2014 and 2018 elections. This year also in December 2023 BJP will lose the Telangana elections again. Give us some credit for that,” Owaisi said.

The AIMIM chief also said that it would contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Aurangabad and also look into the possibility of an alliance with other political parties for the upcoming elections.

Owaisi said, “We will contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Aurangabad and other seats and look into the possibility of an alliance with some other parties. It’s a bit early to comment on with whom we will go in the next elections.”

Hitting out at the Rajasthan government (Congress) on the Bhiwani killing, the AIMIM chief said, “Some are spreading hatred against the Muslim community but no action against them. Rajasthan government can attend Bharat Jodo across the country, Royal wedding in Alwar but they can’t go to the place where Junaid and Nasir were killed.”

Earlier on February 23, AIMIM Chief said, if Junaid & Nasir were not Muslim, Ashok Gehlot would have rushed there till now. Unfortunately, Congress was busy attending a royal wedding in Alwar when the Bhiwani killings happened.

On February 16 (Thursday) morning Haryana Police recovered two charred skeletons inside an SUV car near Barawas village in Haryana’s Bhiwani district. The car had also been set on fire.

The Rajasthan Police booked a Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar for his alleged involvement in the matter triggering a protest by the Hindu outfits including VHP. The FIR also named some other VHP leaders for alleged kidnapping and thrashing the two victims from Rajasthan who were found dead in Bhiwani and were later identified as Junaid and Nasir. It was alleged that the two were involved in cow smuggling.

‘Don’t think Biharis as fools’, Tejashwi targets BJP at mega rally

    [ad_1]

Patna: The Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, on Saturday targeted the BJP during a mega rally of the Mahagathbandhan in Purnia.

“We are Biharis and don’t think of us as fools (Ham Log Bihari Hai, Hamko Burbak Mat Samjhiye),” Tejashwi said while taking a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the promises he had made before the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

It was a show of strength for the Mahagathbandhan on Saturday as each and every MLA, MP and minister were present at the rally.

“During a rally at this same venue in 2014, Narendra Modi had promised to give special status to Bihar. But it turned into a ‘jumla’. Don’t assume that we Biharis are fools. We understand everything. The Centre had said that the income of the farmers would double by 2022, but what happened to that promise? What happened to the promise of concrete houses for every countryman? Please tell us one promise made by the Centre which has been fulfilled,” Tejashwi said.

“What was there for Bihar in the Union Budget this year? Zero. It is Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is developing Bihar in his own capacity,” the RJD leader said.

“BJP does not have any leader, all of them are dealers. They are only trying to divide the society on religious lines. I’m the son of Lalu Prasad, who never compromised with the communal forces in his entire life. I will not bend before these forces,” Tejashwi said.

  • United oppn, including Congress, can restrict BJP to below 100 in 2024: Nitish

United oppn, including Congress, can restrict BJP to below 100 in 2024: Nitish

    [ad_1]

Purnea: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday asserted that the BJP will be restricted to under 100 seats if all the opposition parties, including the Congress, fight the 2024 Lok Sabha polls unitedly.

Addressing a Mahagathbandhan rally in Purnea, the JD(U) chief said the Congress will have to take a quick decision in this regard.

“If all the opposition parties, including the Congress, come together and fight the 2024 Lok Sabha polls unitedly, the BJP will be restricted to under 100 seats,” he said.

“But the Congress will have to take a quick decision in this regard. If you (Congress) accept my suggestion, we can restrict the BJP to under 100 seats. If you don’t, you know what will happen,” Kumar said.

The chief minister claimed his only goal was to work for unifying the opposition to unseat the BJP from power.

“I will keep trying to make it a reality. The BJP needs to be wiped out from the entire country,” he added.

Accusing the BJP of conspiring to “break the country” by dividing people on religious lines, Kumar said, “They are desperate to rewrite history. People know what they did during the freedom struggle. None of us should forget.”

In an apparent dig at the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, he claimed it was an agent of the BJP that was trying to divide the minority votes in the Seemanchal region.

“All of you should remain alert about such forces,” he said.

The chief minister alleged the BJP-led government at the Centre has done nothing for the country or Bihar, other than propaganda.

“What happened to the special status for Bihar? The Center is against the economically weaker sections of the society and that is the reason they were not in favour of the caste-based Census,” he alleged.

“They (BJP) will get to know the reality when elections are held for Lok Sabha in 2024, and in Bihar in 2025,” he added.

Referring to Upendra Kushwaha’s resignation from the Nitish Kumar-led party, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the BJP tried to spit the JD(U) to repeat what it did in Maharashtra with the Shiv Sena.

“But, the people of Bihar have taught them a lesson. There is an urgent need for opposition unity ahead of the 2024 elections to wipe out the BJP from the country. Seven parties have formed an alliance in Bihar. Similarly, all opposition parties in the country should come together to oust the Narendra Modi-led government,” he said.

Yadav alleged that through communal hatred the BJP was trying to divert people’s attention from issues such as price rises. He also thanked Kumar for breaking the alliance with the BJP.

Yadav claimed that Bihar got a “zero” in the Union Budget, while all developmental works were being done in “Gujarat only”.

Dismissing allegations that “jungle raj” has returned to Bihar with the RJD, he said “it is ‘janta raj’ that is underway in the state”.

CPIML(L) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya alleged the BJP was destroying the democratic institutions of the country.

“The BJP’s misrule has plunged the country into a deep crisis. The time has come to fight the fascist forces that are trying to disrupt social harmony and integrity of the country by instigating communal passion,” he said.

Congress empty, KCR working to build coalition to take on BJP: Kavitha

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Saturday said her father, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao was working to put together a strong front of regional parties to take on the BJP.

Her party has good relations with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, she said, speaking to reporters here.

“There is only one front, BJP, in the country. The Congress is empty. There is no front or tent (of opposition). We have good relations with Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar. KCR (Rao) is working to build a strong alternative of regional parties and that will be the alternative front,” the Telangana legislator said.

Maharashtra and Telangana have a close bond as the two states share a border of more than 1,000 km and Vidarbha (eastern Maharashtra) is inspired by KCR’s leadership, she said.

“Our agenda is people-oriented development. We are looking for a progressive partner like Maharashtra. The state’s icons are inspirational. We work for time-bound development,” she said.

  • Welcome HC stay on re-election for MCD panel members, step towards justice: Delhi BJP

Welcome HC stay on re-election for MCD panel members, step towards justice: Delhi BJP

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday welcomed the Delhi High Court ruling putting a stay on the re-election for six members of the Standing Committee of the MCD that was scheduled for February 27, and said this was a “step towards justice”.

Interacting with reporters, Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva said Mayor Shelly Oberoi had made a “wrong, immoral and unconstitutional announcement” on Friday to hold the election afresh.

“Now, the high court has put a stay on this unconstitutional move. And, this is a good decision, a decision that will sustain democracy. We welcome this stay. Truth will triumph and whatever result will eventually come out of it… We feel that the results of the technical experts in the election for the members of the Standing Committee will hold good,” he said.

Kamaljeet Sehrawat, BJP councillor and one of three candidates from the saffron party in the election, said the court’s stay meass that “our demands were valid”.

“The hearing went for one hour and 35 minutes, and the other party’s counsel was asked what right the mayor has in announcing a fresh election for the standing committee’s members without finality on the election already held on Friday. So, this is a step towards justice,” she told reporters.

Sehrawat, a senior BJP leader and a former mayor of south Delhi, said the entire election process went smoothly and counting was also done without any disturbance, then on what grounds a fresh election was announced, without completion of the poll already conducted.

BJP councillor Shikha Rai alleged that Mayor Shelly Oberoi was behaving like a “dictator” on Friday and not announcing the results, despite the technical experts having submitted the documents on it.

“On February 22 also, she had held councillors captive in the House by stretching the proceedings overnight and till next morning,” Rai alleged.

Earlier in the day, addressing a press conference, Sachdeva had alleged that the re-election for members of the MCD panel, called by the mayor on Monday, was “undemocratic and unconstitutional”.

Later in the day, the Delhi High Court stayed the re-election for six members of the Standing Committee of the MCD, on two pleas.

Justice Gaurang Kanth, in a special hearing held on a court holiday, said prima facie it appeared that the mayor, who was also the returning officer, is conducting the re-election on Monday without declaring results of the previous poll held on February 24 which is in violation of regulations.

The high court said the regulations nowhere reflect that the Delhi mayor has authority to declare the election of Standing Committee members as null and void.

It issued a notice to the returning officer and others on two pleas challenging the decision to hold re-election without declaring the results of the earlier poll.

“Notice to hold re-election shall remain stayed till the next date of hearing,” the judge said.

The Delhi BJP tweeted in Hindi on Saturday evening, “Delhi High Court has failed AAP’s plan. Kejriwal ji, how will your game of dirty politics go on?”

It also shared a news clip on the stay granted by the high court.
