EC asks BJP to provide evidence of allegations made against Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday issued a notice to the Karnataka BJP to provide “verifiable and traceable” facts by Tuesday evening regarding its newspaper advertisement that described the Congress as “the most corrupt party in the world”.

The Congress had approached the poll panel against the advertisement issued by the BJP’s Karnataka unit.

In its notice to the BJP Karnataka president, the Election Commission (EC) said criticism of the policy and governance of opponent parties is a right guaranteed and enshrined in the Constitution as well as an essential function of various political actors under India’s electoral process.

“However, while exercising this right and performing this essential function, the various political parties are expected to uphold high standards of public discourse and adhere to the various provisions of the model code and relevant laws,” it said.

The commission has directed the state BJP to “convey the verifiable and traceable facts” regarding the claims made in the advertisement given by them along with an explanation, if any, by 8.00 pm on May 9 and also put that in “public domain”.

Earlier, it had issued a similar notice to the Congress for its “corruption rate card” advertisement.

No matter how hard BJP tries, development work won’t stop in Delhi: Sisodia

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, who is in judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the Delhi excise policy case, said on Monday that no matter how hard the BJP tries, development work will not be stalled in the national capital.

“Be it in Patparganj or other parts of Delhi, development work will not stop. No matter how hard the BJP people tries, no work will stop in Delhi,” Sisodia said after coming out of the Rouse Avenue Court, which extended his judicial custody till May 23.

The court also allowed an application moved by his legal team seeking permisson for Sisodia to sign certain documents for approving the disbursement of funds for development work in his constituency (Patparganj).

    MS Education Academy

The ED had arrested Sisodia on March 9 after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested him on February 26 this year in the same case.

The ED has alleged that Sisodia was the mastermind behind the entire excise policy case and that he had deliberately leaked the policy to the co-accused to generate financial kickbacks.

  • In run-up to Karnataka polls, Rahul minces no words to target BJP over Adani issue

In run-up to Karnataka polls, Rahul minces no words to target BJP over Adani issue

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The campaigning for the May 10 Karnataka Assembly polls that ended on Monday has witnessed former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi not mincing any words to target the BJP government at the Centre over the Adani issue, besides raising the “issues of corruption under the Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government” in the poll-bound state.

The issue around Adani Group gained momentum earlier this year in January when US-based short seller Hindenburg alleged stock manipulation and fraud by the conglomerate.

The Adani Group has attacked Hindenburg as “an unethical short seller” and stated that the report by the New York-based entity was “nothing but a lie”.

    MS Education Academy

Rahul Gandhi, who kicked off his campaign trail from Karnataka’s Kolar on April 16, first raised the issue of the Adani Group in his public meeting.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha for his Modi surname remarks he made in Kolar in April 2019 during the Lok Sabha elections campaigning.

He was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP on March 23 this year following his conviction in a defamation case by a Surat court.

Rahul Gandhi raised issues around the Adani Group during his public meetings in Kolar, Humnabad, Vijaypura, Hanjal, Anekal and Mangaluru, besides other issues.

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi said: “They (BJP) do not want me to talk in Parliament. They are afraid that I will raise questions on Adani. They disqualified me from Parliament thinking that I would remain silent and I would be scared. I am not scared. I will again ask the Prime Minister.”

He had said: “Till I get answers, I will not stop. Disqualify me or put me in jail. It will not affect me.”

“In Parliament, I questioned the Prime Minister about his relationship with Adani. First, they switched off my mike and later BJP ministers told lies about me. When I sought to respond as per the right of a member, the Speaker did not allow me. They do not want me to speak in Parliament and hence disqualified me,” Rahul Gandhi had said in his speech in Kolar.

Rahul Gandhi, who addressed 23 public meetings and road shows in poll-bound Karnataka, also highlighted the alleged corruption rampant under the ruling BJP government in the state.

In his every public meeting in the state, he targeted the BJP government over the alleged ’40 per cent commission’ issue.

While addressing a public meeting in Karnataka’s Anekal on May 7, Rahul Gandhi targeted the BJP and said: “For the last three years, there is a BJP government in Karnataka and the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) is aware of corruption here. You only call it a ‘double engine government’. This time, the double engine is stolen.”

“PM Modi, please tell the people of Karnataka, which engine got how much out of 40 per cent commission,” he asked the Prime Minister while addressing a public meeting in Anekal on May 7.

He said that the contractors’ association in Karnataka wrote to the Prime Minister that 40 per cent commission was charged from them but Modi did not reply.

The Congress in Karnataka had designed its campaigning highlighting the corruption in the state government and also launched the PayCM campaign in the run-up to assembly polls.

Rahul Gandhi also highlighted the four promises, which are declared as guarantees for the people of Karnataka, which include — Gruha Jyothi (200 units of free electricity), Gruha Lakshmi-Rs 2,000 monthly to every woman head of the family, Anna Bhagya-10 kg of food grains of their choice (among rice, ragi, jowar, millet) to every person in a BPL family.

Rahul Gandhi also announced to provide free travel to all women in regular Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses.

Even his sister and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too held 26 public meetings and road shows in the state, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed 36 public meetings and four press conferences in the poll-bound state.

Kharge, who also hails from Karnataka, has camped in the poll-bound state since April 16 to ensure the victory of the party.

Karnataka Congress in-charge and party general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala had also been camping in the state for last two and half months and had succeeded in keeping the Congress flock together.

Even former Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed a public meeting in Hubballi on May 6, her first electoral public meeting after a gap of four years.

Polling for the 224-member Assembly is scheduled on May 10 and counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Congress govt in Himachal misused official machinery to win Shimla civic polls, says BJP

    [ad_1]

Shimla: The BJP on Monday alleged that the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh misused the official machinery to win the elections to the Shimla Municipal Corporation.

Sukhram Chaudhary, the party’s Shimla Municipal Corporation election in-charge, said the votes of thousands of people from outside Shimla were registered to influence the polls.

The Congress won 24 of the 34 wards in last week’s Shimla Municipal Corporation election. The BJP won nine wards and the CPI(M) one while the AAP, which had contested from 21 seats, drew a blank.

    MS Education Academy

During a review meeting on Monday, the BJP’s Himachal Pradesh unit chief Rajiv Bindal said the Congress indulged in malpractices to influence the elections from day one.

The roster was fiddled with and over 20,000 new voters were registered, he claimed.

Bindal added that the announcement of jobs regularisation and three per cent dearness allowance were attempts to woo the government employees, who constitute a major chunk of voters in the civic polls.

Expressing his gratitude to the party workers for the efforts they put into the election campaign, the BJP state unit chief exhorted leaders to gear up for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The BJP’s nine winning candidates were also present at the meeting.

Former chief minister Jai Ram Thakur called on the party workers to strengthen the polling booths ahead of the parliamentary elections.

  • Congress files complaint against Karnataka BJP candidate for ‘threat to kill Kharge’

Congress files complaint against Karnataka BJP candidate for ‘threat to kill Kharge’

    [ad_1]

Panaji: The Congress in Goa on Monday filed a complaint against BJP candidate Manikanta Rathod from Karnataka for the alleged plot to assassinate Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and his family.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Amit Patkar along with other office bearers filed the complaint at the Panaji police station.

Patkar speaking to reporters, alleged that a conspiracy to kill Kharge and his family was hatched by the BJP candidate from Chittapur seat Manikanta Rathod, who was heard purportedly saying so in Kannada in an audio clip.

    MS Education Academy

“The BJP leader has clearly said in the audio tape that he will kill Mallikarjun Kharge and his family. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Election Commission are mum on this issue. We have filed a complaint and have demanded to register a FIR and probe the case,” Patkar said.

Stating that the government has failed to take action against Rathod, Patkar questioned whether “we are in a democracy”.

“This is an open threat to our leader. There are several cases against Rathod. Such a person has been given a ticket by the BJP and despite his threat to our leader, no action has been taken against him,” Patkar said.

“The murder plot is very clear from the audio recording of BJP candidate from Chittapur, Shri Manikanta Rathod, who also happens to be the ‘Blue Eyed Boy’ of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj Bommai,” the complaint stated.

“There is a designed hatred, towards the tall leader of the country Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, on part of the BJP leadership, and that the BJP is unable to digest the fact, that having been born in a Dalit family to a factory labourer, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has risen from the post of block Congress president to be the president of the Indian National Congress,” it said.

“The BJP leaders are openly plotting the assassination of Mallikarjun Kharge, his wife and the entire family, and that, the frustration and desperation of the BJP and its leadership has now reached dangerous proportions,” the complaint stated.

BJP files complaint with EC against Sonia Gandhi over ‘sovereignty’ row

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The BJP on Monday filed a complaint with the Election Commission against former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi over the statement that the party will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s “reputation, sovereignty or integrity” and requested it to issue direction for registration of FIR against her.

The Congress, referring to Gandhi’s speech at a campaign rally at Hubballi on Saturday, said in a tweet that the Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson “sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas,’ and also posted pictures of her speaking at the public meeting.

The Congress tweet read: “The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity.”

Describing this statement as “shocking and unacceptable”, Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, who filed the complaint, said Gandhi has violated provisions of the Model Code of Conduct and requested the EC to take stringent action against her for making “such a statement.”

Karandlaje, Convener of the BJP Election Management Committee, also requested the EC to issue direction to register a FIR against her and take exemplary punitive action.

  • BJP leaders Raje, Kailash refused to support conspiracy to topple my govt in 2020: Gehlot

BJP leaders Raje, Kailash refused to support conspiracy to topple my govt in 2020: Gehlot

    [ad_1]

Dholpur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday claimed he survived the 2020-revolt by some Congress MLAs because BJP leaders Vasundhara Raje and Kailash Meghwal refused to support a conspiracy to topple an elected government through money power.

Raje, a former chief minister of Rajasthan, however, said that “Gehlot’s ‘praises’ is a big conspiracy” against her and the Congress leader was speaking lies due to rebellion in his party.

Gehlot also took potshots at the rebel Congress MLAs, saying they should return the money they had taken from the BJP so that they can carry out their duty without any pressure.

    MS Education Academy

His then deputy Sachin Pilot and 18 other Congress MLAs had revolted against his leadership in July 2020. The month-long crisis ended after the intervention of the party high command. Pilot was then removed as the deputy chief minister and state Congress president.

Addressing a programme in Dholpur, Gehlot said he as the state party chief, did not support the toppling of the BJP government led by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat as it was unfair, in the same manner, Raje and Meghwal said that there is no tradition in Rajasthan to topple an elected government.

Meghwal is a former speaker of the state assembly and is currently an MLA.

“If I wanted, Bhairon Singh ji’s government could have been toppled. I said this was unethical work. The man who is ill, he is getting treatment in America, his condition was very critical and leaders of his party were conspiring to topple his government behind him,” Gehlot said.

He continued, “Kailash Meghwal and Vasundhara Raje also said the same thing. They said that we have never had a tradition to bring down elected governments on money power… what wrong did he do?”

Gehlot also praised MLA Shobharani Kushwah who had cross-voted in favour of the Congress candidate in the Rajya Sabha election last year.

Dholpur MLA Kushwah was subsequently suspended by the BJP for cross-voting.

She was a bold lady, the chief minister said and added that “when Shobharani supported us, it shocked BJP leaders”.

Gehlot claimed that she listened to Raje and Meghwal and her conscience said that she should not support “those people”.

“That’s why our government was saved. I can never forget this incident in my life, which had happened with me,” he said.

Terming Gehlot’s “praises” for her as a big conspiracy, Raje in a statement on Sunday night said he “has made such outrageous and untrue allegations because of the rebellion happening in his own party and diminishing mass base”.

The BJP leader said that no one can insult her as much as Gehlot did in his life. To avoid a historic defeat in the 2023 assembly elections, he is creating such fabricated stories, which is unfortunate and not going to be successful, Raje said.

Gehlot and Raje have often been accused by their detractors in their own parties of “going soft” on each other, especially when it came to allegations of corruption.

The two leaders have denied any such understanding. A few days ago, Raje had rejected allegations of collusion with Gehlot as lie, saying milk and lemon juice never mix.

Gehlot also alleged that Union Ministers Amit Shah, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Dharmendra Pradhan had conspired together to topple his government.

“They distributed money in Rajasthan and they are not taking the money back now. I am surprised why they are not demanding the money back from them (the Congress MLAs who had revolted),” he claimed.

“I have even told the MLAs that whatever money they have taken, Rs 10 crore or Rs 20 crore, if you have spent anything, I will give that part or I will get it from AICC (All India Congress Committee),” he said.

Gehlot alleged that if the MLAs did not return the money, they will always be under pressure from Shah. “He is the Union home minister, he will intimidate…in Maharashtra he divided Shiv Sena,” he alleged.

In her statement, Raje also said giving and accepting bribes are crimes and if Congress MLAs have taken money, then FIR should be lodged. Gehlot has accused Home Minister Shah but Shah’s honesty and integrity is well known, she said.

In his address, Gehlot said that he was made the chief minister by the party for a third time and it was his duty to take all along and forget past happenings and ensure the return of the party to power in the assembly elections, slated for later this year.

The Congress leader was addressing the programme in the home turf Raje.

Gehlot also praised Congress MLAs Rohit Bohra, Chetan Dudi and Danish Abrar for alerting him about the revolt against his government in 2020.

He said that these three MLAs, BSP-turned-Congress MLAs and independent MLAs who had supported him and saved his government during the political crisis in 2020 deserved to be made ministers in his government but he could not do so due to political reasons and was sad about it.

BJP won’t give reservations to Muslims in Karnataka: Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

Bagalkot: Attacking Congress over “appeasement politics” ahead of Karnataka assembly elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will not allow Muslim reservations in the state.

Addressing a public meeting in Hunagunda, Shah said, “BJP has strengthened the security of the nation by banning the Popular Front of India (PFI), but the Congress party is against it… BJP will neither allow Muslim reservations nor will allow Lingayat reservations to be reduced in the state.”

Exuding confidence in Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the upcoming Karnataka elections, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday said the party will return to power with a full majority.

    MS Education Academy

Shah held a mega roadshow in Doddaballapura on Sunday.

“We will win the elections by full majority or at least half a mark plus 15 seats. In these four years, Yediyurappa and Bommai government has done a lot of work,” the Union Home Minister told ANI.

The 224-seat Karnataka assembly will go to polls on May 10 and the counting of votes will take place on May 13. The majority mark to form the government is 113 seats.

Attacking Congress, Shah further said, “Congress gives false promises everywhere and loses elections. They take support of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India (PFI) which Karnataka’s people do not like and are furious about it.”

The BJP is eyeing a second term in the state and has exuded confidence in retaining power with a full majority.

Notably, Karnataka is the only State in the South where BJP is in power.

Campaigning for the 10 May elections in Karnataka is at its peak with multiple rallies, public meetings and interactions across the State.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a mega roadshow in Bengaluru on Sunday. He also held public meetings at Nanjangud in Mysuru and Shivamogga.

Give tax exemption to ‘The Kerala Story’: BJP to Kejriwal govt

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi unit of the BJP on Sunday demanded that the AAP government give tax exemption to ‘The Kerala Story’ film and hold its special screenings for girls in the 15-16 age group in the city.

In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said the film was based on the “serious issue of love jihad”, “religious conversion” and pushing innocent girls into “terrorism”.

The Delhi chief minister should promote the film by watching it himself and exempting it from entertainment tax, he said.

    MS Education Academy

“The Kerala Story has been given an ‘A’ certificate for viewing only by adults, while nowadays the danger of love jihad is gravest for the girls of 15-16 years of age. Therefore, the chief minister should contact the Film Censor Board and get it a ‘U/A’ certificate for Delhi so that more and more girls belonging to the sensitive category can be made aware by showing this film,” Kapoor said.

He said that besides girl students of classes 11 and 12, those who are pursuing graduation also become “easy victims” of “love jihad” and the movie should be shown to them through special shows as well.

The film starring Adah Sharma revolves around a group of women in Kerala who are forced to convert and join ISIS.

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi credited the film for bringing out terror conspiracies and used it to attack the Congress during a rally in Karnataka.

BJP national president J P Nadda, campaigning in Karnataka, is scheduled to attend a screening of “The Kerala Story” on Sunday night.

  • UP civic polls: Adityanath says BJP govt ‘put Aligarh lock’ on riots in state

UP civic polls: Adityanath says BJP govt ‘put Aligarh lock’ on riots in state

    [ad_1]

Aligarh: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the double-engine government of the BJP has “put an Aligarh lock” on riots in the state.

Campaigning for the second phase of urban local body polls in Aligarh, which is famous for its locks, Adityanath hit out at opposition parties for promoting “tamancha (countrymade pistol) culture” in the state.

The chief minister also held public meetings in Budaun, Shahjahanpur and Bareilly, and talked about law and order and development in his speeches in these districts.

    MS Education Academy

“The double-engine government of the BJP has put an Aligarh lock over riots in the state and made UP riot-free,” Adityanath said in Aligarh.

“Double-engine” is a term often used by BJP leaders to refer to the party ruling at the Centre and in a state.

In an apparent reference to the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, the CM said people with ‘parivarvadi’ (dynastic) and ‘jaativadi’ (casteist) mindset gave ‘tamanchas’ to the youth after coming to power.

“We changed this tamancha culture and provided tablets to two crore youths,” he said.

Adityanath said Aligarh is known all over the world for its locks and the BJP government is working towards its revival.

“The lock industry (of Aligarh) will be given a global platform with the help of one district one product initiative,” he said.

“Taala (locks), taaleem (education) and tehzeeb (culture) of Aligarh were once its identity. But the casteist mindset of the dynastic parties has shut down the lock industry of Aligarh, and created obstructions,” he said.

“These casteist and dynastic parties have nothing to do with education and culture. They adopted the policy of divide and rule and used it to divide society on the basis of appeasement. They made an effort to increase the gulf in society. As a result of this, there was an atmosphere of fear among the people even during festivals,” Adityanath said.

Aligarh will vote in the second phase of the urban local body polls on May 11. The counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Adityanath said people of the state were forced to face curfews for a long time.

“But today, you are seeing Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh and India transforming. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the perception about India has changed, and Indians are seen with respect wherever they go,” he said.

“What could not be achieved in the last 60-65 years has been done in nine years. The government has worked hard to put an end to terrorism, Naxalism and separatism in the country,” he said.

Referring to the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Adityanath credited the efforts of the BJP’s double-engine government to resolve a 500-year-old dispute.

“Today, Kashi Vishwanath Dhaam is being constructed in Kashi, whereas Mathura and Vrindavan are being decorated. Along with this, beautification of Naimisharanya, Vindhyavasini Dham, Lalapur of (sage) Valmiki and Rajapur of Tulsidas (both in Chitrakoot) is also underway,” he said.

The CM also said that a memorandum of understanding has been signed with the Airports Authority of India for the building of an airport in Aligarh.

“We are going to connect it with air service and for the extension of the airport, Rs 700 crore has already been released,” he said.

“In addition, construction of the four-lane highway from Ghaziabad to Kanpur via Aligarh is going on at a fast pace,” Adityanath said, adding that a power plant is being set up at Harduaganj which will make Aligarh the centre of energy production.

The chief minister also said that the BJP’s double-engine government has named a university after Maharaja Mahendra Pratap Singh, who fought for the country’s independence and also donated land for the Aligarh Muslim University, although there is no “shilapat (nameplate) of his in the AMU”.

Addressing a rally in Badaun, Adityanath said till six years ago, dynastic parties used to give pistols to the youth.

“The youth are becoming self-reliant as we are combining talent of Uttar Pradesh with technology and training. As a result of this, UP is rapidly becoming the growth engine of India’s development,” the CM said.

In Shahjahanpur, he said that festivals have replaced nuisance and disorder in the state of today. “The atmosphere of fear and panic is over now. People celebrate festivals peacefully and with joy. Now there is no curfew, instead Kanwar yatras are taken out peacefully,” he added.

In Bareilly, the CM said the city earlier known as a garbage dump has turned into a smart city. “Bareilly has an airport. Four-lane and six-lane roads are being constructed,” he said.
