On 27th June this year Prime Minister Modi accused Sharad Pawar’s NCP as being involved in various scams of Rs 70,000 crores e.g. Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank scam, Irrigation scam, illegal mining scam, etc

Yet just 5 days later on 2nd July a section of the NCP, led by Sharad Pawar’s nephew Ajit Pawar, joined the BJP which is in power in Maharashtra. These defectors were promptly rewarded, Ajit Pawar being made a Deputy CM, and others being made Ministers.

    https://www.indiatoday.in/india-today-insight/story/what-ajit-pawars-defection-brings-for-prime-players-in-maharashtra-politics-2400918-2023-07-02

It is interesting to note that corruption charges had been levied against many of these defectors by the Enforcement Directorate of India, but these tainted defectors have now become Ministers ! Their cases will now obviously be put into the cold storage.

Defection is nothing new in Indian politics. In 1967 Chaudhury Charan Singh defected 3 times in 3 days. In 1980 Bhajan Lal defected to Congress with almost all his MLAs. The list of ‘Aya Rams Gaya Rams’ in India is very long.

But this latest defection takes the cake. In 5 days the defectors have been transformed from heavily corruption tainted figures ( as described by the Prime Minister ) to snow white clean saints.

Indian politics reminds me of the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice in Wonderland !

Foxconn buys large tract of land near Bengaluru, BJP cheerful

Bengaluru: Foxconn, the world’s biggest contract electronics manufacturer and assembler of iPhones, has bought a huge tract of land on the outskirts of Bengaluru.

The key Apple supplier has stated this in its filing at London Stock Exchange. The news has come as a shot in the arm to the ruling BJP ahead of crucial Assembly elections scheduled on May 10.

Investment by Foxconn in the state had run into controversy following the opposition parties questioning ruling BJP and calling it a publicity stunt.

    MS Education Academy

The ruling BJP had announced the establishment of an iPhone assembling unit by Foxconn in Bengaluru. Later, the claim was disputed by the company.

An embarrassed Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had released the letter of appreciation by Foxconn to defend against the attacks by the opposition.

According to latest reports, the company made the statement in this regard at London Stock Exchange. According to the statement, the 1.2 million square metre (13 million square foot) plot has been acquired near Devanahalli located close to Bengaluru International Airport. According to sources, the land was bought for Rs 106.24 crores.

This is seen as part of the company’s strategy to look for alternative production destinations away from China following rigid Covid rules, the sources said.

The Karnataka State High-Level Clearance Committee (SHLCC) had approved Foxconn investment proposal in March. The company proposed to manufacture mobile devices.

The official statement from the Large and Medium Industries Ministry said that Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Private Ltd (FHH) would invest Rs 8,000 crore with employment opportunities for 50,000 people.

The delegation led by Foxconn CEO and Chairman Young Liu had visited the state and held a meeting with Bommai in Bengaluru. The appreciation letter released by CM’s office was written by Foxconn CEO to Bommai and termed their visit a great success.

JD-S leader and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy had asked the ruling BJP to clarify whether the announcement regarding Foxconn by the Chief Minister was a publicity stunt or if any MOU was signed.

He had earlier maintained that the Karnataka BJP government had the policy of maximum publicity and zero result policy.

“Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and two other ministers took free publicity by stating that iPhone manufacturer Foxconn company from Taiwan has come to the state for investment. They held the signed letters in their hands stating the MOU had been signed and posed before the media,” Kumaraswamy had stated.

The Taiwanese company, on the other hand, told the media that there are no definitive agreements made to invest in Karnataka. At this, Kumaraswamy had said that if this is the case, what really happened in the presence of CM Bommai and demanded the government clarify the matter.

Manipur in flames due to failure of ‘double engine’ BJP govts of state, Centre: Cong

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Tuesday blamed the “double engine government” of the BJP at the Centre as well as in Manipur for allegedly failing to prevent the ethnic violence in the state which led to the loss of many lives.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said the party is deeply concerned over the tragedy in Manipur and alleged that the situation proves the gross “callousness, negligence and casualness” of the state government and the “inactivity” of the central government.

Speaking at a press conference here, he said the basic question is that we are very concerned at the hateful, hostile and horrid conditions we find in Manipur, adding that the sensitive north-eastern border state is up in flames.

    MS Education Academy

“It reflects the state government’s and the central government’s ‘double engine lawlessness’, ‘double engine statelessness’ and ‘double engine shamelessness’. It shows that Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP government is badly devoid of qualities of statecraft, stateliness, and statesmanship.

“It has led to a sad, sordid saga of provoked communities and castes against each other with such a vital and sensitive state up in flames. How did it happen… one major contributory factor, little noticed, has emerged from yesterday’s hearing in the Supreme Court,” he told reporters.

Violent clashes broke out in the northeastern state after a Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in 10 hill districts on May 3 to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, leading to the deaths of at least 54 people.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals Nagas and Kukis constitute another 40 per cent of the population and live in the hill districts.

The clashes were preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land which had led to a series of smaller agitations since February this year.

Singhvi said the apex court put a very candid question on why the state government did not tell the High Court of a 23-year-old judgment of the constitution bench of the Supreme Court that such notifications and approvals, such inclusions of STs cannot be done by state government or state high courts and can only be done by a presidential notification.

“Why was this not the preliminary objection of the state government in the course of the hearing in the Manipur High Court? The first sentence from their mouth ought to have been that this proceeding should not go on, because we, the State Government have no such power, no such jurisdiction. It is settled in a two-and-half decades ago judgement.

“If this was not so, does it not reflect the utter callousness, casualness, possibly the complicity of the state government? Who will be accountable for that? Who will be accountable for this gross negligence, resulting in the loss of precious lives and this great alarming situation in Manipur?” Singhvi asked.

The Congress leader further said that while the central government has brought several ST-related bills in the last two sessions of Parliament, including during the winter and budget sessions, but no attention was paid to the Manipur ST issue.

“If so many other bills or STs are coming, surely this should have been addressed. Who is responsible for this action?” he asked.

“Clearly responsible for this inaction leading to dangerous consequences… is the failure of the ‘double engine sarkar’. It is a ‘double engine’ sarkari failure,” he asserted.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, citing a report quoting the chief justice of India, said, “In light of what the CJI has said — it is astonishing what a single judge of the Manipur High Court did, triggering such a human tragedy!”.

“But the ideological brotherhood, its henchman in Manipur, and his masters at the Centre cannot escape their responsibility,” he said on Twitter.

Ramesh cited the news report that quoted the CJI saying that the high court does not have the power to direct changes in the Scheduled Tribes list and asked why a constitution bench verdict of 2000 noting that courts do not have power to “add or subtract” the ST list was not “shown” to the Manipur High Court.

Concerned over the huge loss of life and property, the Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre and the Manipur government to step up relief and rehabilitation efforts for those hit by the violence in the north-eastern state, besides protecting places of worship, many of which were targeted during the mayhem.

Manipur Chief Minister Singh said 60 people have been killed, 231 injured and 1,700 houses, including religious places, burnt in the violence.

BJP committee blames lack of security for Sambalpur violence

New Delhi: A BJP probe committee, which visited Odisha to look into the communal violence on the eve of Hanuman Jayanti in Sambalpur last month, has blamed “lack” of security arrangements and alleged a religious procession was pelted with stones from mosques.

The four-member panel of MPs Brij Lal, Samir Oraon, Aditya Sahu and Jyotirmay Singh Mahato submitted its report to party president J P Nadda on Tuesday.

The committee alleged the Hanuman Jayanti procession on motorcycles was pelted with stones from mosques and rooftops on April 12, causing injuries to many people, party leaders said.

It further alleged adequate security arrangements were not made despite intelligence of likely violence.

  • Mamata Banerjee attacks BJP pointing out Tagore stood for secular vision

Mamata Banerjee attacks BJP pointing out Tagore stood for secular vision

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Even as a controversy broke out over what political rivals saw as an attempt to usurp the legacy of national poet Rabindranath Tagore by the BJP, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a speech here on Tuesday to mark the Nobel Laurette’s birth anniversary pointedly spoke about his secular vision and his use of Raksha Bandhan to promote Hindu-Muslim unity.

Analysts saw this as thinly veiled attack on the BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah who is in the city to pay homage to the poet at a function organised by a BJP supported cultural NGO. TMC has long accused BJP and its top leadership of promoting a political ideology opposed to the tenets of secularism.

“We hardly have the qualifications to define the Poet Laurette he is in our soul, he is the poet of the freedom movement, the poet who stood against communal disharmony, who stood for Raksha Bandhan (Tagore tied Rakhis on the wrist of Muslim leaders to unite them with Hindus in the struggle against the British move to divide Bengal in 1905),” Banerjee said.

    MS Education Academy

She also said that many things are being bandied about for the sake of electoral calculations such as that “Tagore was born in Santiniketan”.

“We should not think that for the sake of elections we can purchase someone spending Rs 5, or mistakenly we can say that Rabindranath Tagore was born in Santiniketan,” Banerjee said.

The TMC had two-and-a-half years ago gone to town with a screenshot of a tweet by BJP’s Bengal unit quoting the party president J P Nadda as making the claim as against the fact that he was born in Kolkata at Jorashankho Palace, where Shah had gone Tuesday morning. It has also long been claiming that the BJP hired people for its rallies and processions.

She also pointed to an incident which occurred a few years back when a bust of Bengal renaissance icon and educationist Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was destroyed in a college in Kolkata during a BJP rally some years back, shocking people in the state.

“We should not think that one can vandalise the bust of Vidyasagar,” Banerjee said.

“Those who have Tagore in their hearts always feel him. If ‘Ravi-upasana’ (Rabindranath homage) is done from the bottom of your heart, then that will be the real homage to the real Rabindranath,” Banerjee added.

Earlier in the day, one of Banerjee’s lieutenant’s, state urban minister Firhad Hakim alleged that the BJP was trying to reap benefits from Tagore’s cult status in the state by organising a visit by Shah’s to pay homage to the poet.

Hakim said, “The BJP is trying to woo Bengalis before next year’s Lok Sabha polls. But Rabindranath Tagore should not be used for political reasons or electoral benefits.

He said that Tagore’s ideology of secularism, humanism needs to be understood. “You need to follow his path of tolerance, harmony among all religions, which the BJP does not,” the minister said.

CPI(M) state secretary Md Salim also alleged that both TMC and BJP were trying to use Tagore politically.

“Today those who are playing with religion, are trying to use Tagore for their divisive politics. Tagore was against all this. Neither BJP’s nor TMC’s ideologies match with that of Tagore,” Salim told reporters.

PM, other BJP leaders violated model code in ‘silence period’, Congress tells EC

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: On the eve of polling in the crucial Karnataka Assembly polls, the Congress on Tuesday complained to the Election Commission against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

In a eight-page complaint to the Commission, Congress General Secretary and state unit in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala said: “We write to you with great urgency to bring to your attention the brazen and blatant violation of the MCC as well as the provisions of the Representation of People Act, 1951 by the Prime Minister and other leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).”

Surjewala said that on Monday, post 11 p.m., Modi addressed the public through a video message, wherein he appealed to the voters of Karnataka on behalf of BJP and all its candidates contesting in the the elections.

    MS Education Academy

“With due respect, neither the Prime Minister nor this Commission can possibly deny the ‘Silence Period’ as contemplated under Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951 for the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Elections, 2023 had come into effect from Monday 6 p.m.” he said, attaching the video link of the Prime Minister’s address.

The Congress leader, who himself camped in the southern state for over two months, said: “In fact, this Commission’s attention may even be brought to the live interviews of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President J.P. Nadda, which were aired on news channels after the declaration of the ‘Silence Period’. In these interviews, the said leaders spoke extensively about the Karnataka elections and their respective candidates.”

He also submitted a copy of the video recording of the live interviews being conducted on news channels after declaration of ‘Silence Period’ with the Commission.

The Congress leader, in his complaint, also cited the six complaints it submitted with the poll panel in last few days against the speeches given by Modi, Shah, Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, as part of BJP’s election campaign.

Surjewala said that he was still hoipeful that the poll panel may initiate action against the BJP leaders and not be intimidated by the high offices that they hold.

“The COmmission must take immediate note of this and initiate appropriate proceedings against Modi, Shah, Nadda, Yogi Adityanath and the BJP,” he said, adding that it may be mentioned that if convicted under Section 126 of the Representation of People Act, 1951, these leaders will stand disqualified from their respective membership in the Parliament as well as the Legislative Assembly.

On Monday, the Commission also served a notice to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge asking to provide clarification and take rectification measures over former party chief Sonia Gandhi’s purported ‘Karnataka sovereignty’ remark.

Polling for Karnataka assembly is scheduled on May 10 and counting of votes will take place on May 13.

Priyanka Gandhi’s declaration to Telangana youths ‘fake’: BJP

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader NV Subhash on Monday said that Priyanka Gandhi’s announcements in the ‘Youth Declaration’ in Telangana are yet to be implemented in the Congress-ruled states and dubbed them as “fake” assurances ahead of the state assembly polls later this year.

This comes after Priyanka Gandhi, who visited Telangana and addressed a gathering at Saroornagar grounds in Hyderabad on Monday, unveiled a five-point ‘Youth Declaration’ of the Congress party aiming to allure the youths ahead of the State Assembly elections.

The five points Priyanka mentioned include One government job to the kin of those who died for Telangana, a Rs 25,000 pension to their families, filling up of around 2 lakh vacant jobs in government, Rs 4,000 of monthly allowance to all those unemployed, more skill development centres, universities, and clearance of fee reimbursement arrears, and free EV scooters to girls in education.

    MS Education Academy

Responding to the announcements, the BJP spokesperson and the grandson of former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao said, “All India Congress Committee General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi had visited here and then gave so many declarations, especially the Youth Declaration. The Telangana BJP feels that it is a fake declaration, which cannot be implemented.”

He alleged that schemes, akin to these have not even been fulfilled in the Congress-ruled States like Himachal Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

“When the elections took place in Rajasthan, many unemployed youths were looking for Priyanka Gandhi because she gave same kind of youth declaration.

But as the elections got over and the party rose to power, but the jobs were not given,” he told ANI.
“Many enraged people, especially the youths from Rajasthan, wanted to meet Priyanka Gandhi, but she refused to meet them because the declaration she gave was fake,” the BJP leader added.

Subhash claimed that the same thing will happen in Telangana.
“The declaration is only to deceive the people, especially the youth, as Congress is not coming to power in the southern states of Telangana and Karnataka,” he said.

The BJP leader said that the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Congress are in the same boat as in the upcoming elections, the BJP will come to power.

“The people who get elected in the Congress party ticket are switching loyalties to the BRS. The same thing will happen in the future also. So just to curtail and control the BJP’s growing popularity in Telangana, she has come and is indirectly supporting the BRS party,” he added.

BJP leaders watch ‘The Kerala Story’ with DU girl students

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several BJP leaders on Monday watched a show of ‘The Kerala Story’ at a cinema hall in walled city with a number of female students from the Delhi University, invited by them, among the viewers.

The media relations department of the party’s state unit had booked an exclusive show at Delite cinema hall in Daryaganj.

The exclusive show was attended by Union minister Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, state president Virendra Sachdeva, and former Union minister Harsh Vardhan.

    MS Education Academy

The politicians were joined in the screening by members of ABVP, the RSS student wing, a group of DU girl students, some local traders, and members of press, the Delhi BJP said in a statement.

Sachdeva claimed the film to be based on Kerala women who were “forced love jihad and conversion victims.”

It raises awareness against dangers of “love jihad” across the country, he said.

The film which has been mired in controversy even before its release has been directed by Sudipto Sen and has been boycotted in several districts of Kerala, and across Tamil Nadu by theatre owners.

The central claim of the film that 3,200 women from Kerala joined ISIS remains unsubstantiated. The producers of the film even removed the claim from all its social media posts after it was asked to do so by Kerala High Court. The film was released on May 5.

The state BJP has asked the Delhi AAP government to exempt the film from entertainment tax and hold its special screenings for girls in the 15-16 age group.

In a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor had asked him to watch the film, claiming the film was based on the “serious issue of love jihad”, “religious conversion” and pushing innocent girls into “terrorism.”

Junior home minister G Krishna Reddy had in 2020 informed parliament that the term ‘love jihad’ is not defined in law, and no police cases have been filed under it.

Union minister Smriti Irani will watch the movie in a theatre in Chanakyapuri on Tuesday evening, Kapoor said.
