Lake would likely galvanize Trump supporters to the point that many Republicans think she would be all but impossible to defeat in a primary. But GOP strategists are concerned that Lake would turn off swing voters in the general election, particularly after she contested her loss in the gubernatorial contest in 2022.

Last year, a number of Senate contenders tied to Trump won their primaries but were defeated in the fall. In an effort to avoid another disappointing election, Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.), chair of the NRSC, has actively recruited candidates he believes are electable in key battleground states, including West Virginia, Montana and Pennsylvania. But Daines has not picked a favorite as of yet in Arizona.

In a CNN interview this week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell declined to comment directly on a possible run by Lake, though he left Arizona out of his list of top four Senate battlegrounds. He said there is “high likelihood” that GOP leaders would wait until after the primary to determine whether to get involved. “I think there are some other places where with the right candidate, we might be able to compete — in Nevada, Arizona,” he said. The Arizona Senate primary won’t take place until August of 2024.

The NRSC regularly sits down with potential and declared candidates, and such a meeting does not suggest any preference on its part. Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, the only Republican who has announced a run for Sinema’s seat, had a meeting with the NRSC earlier this year, as did Karrin Taylor Robson, a businessperson who is considering a campaign. Taylor Robson lost to Lake in the 2022 gubernatorial primary.

Lake’s spokesperson did not provide the names of the senators she is sitting down with this week. The NRSC declined to comment on whether Daines is meeting with Lake. When Lake previously gathered with NRSC officials in February, she did not meet with him.

Lake and her staffers have taken a number of steps recently that suggest she is either close to running for the Senate or positioning herself as Trump’s running mate, should he win the presidential nomination. Her aide, Colton Duncan, said he is “99 percent sure she’s going to run for Senate.” She is releasing a book, “Unafraid: Just Getting Started.” She has also attacked Gallego as too liberal for Arizona.

A GOP strategist close to Lake said she is expected to announce a Senate campaign in the early fall, though others in her orbit said a kickoff could take place earlier.

In addition, Lake has made two stops this year in Iowa, the first-in-the-nation caucus state where she happens to have grown up. Last week, she spoke at Conservative Political Action Conference Hungary and met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, a venerated international figure in America’s MAGA movement. She is currently in the United Kingdom, where she appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored,” speaking to him about her lawsuit disputing her loss in the governor’s race as well as her future.

“If for some reason we don’t get a fair outcome in our election, I will run for Senate, most likely,” Lake told him.

Angela Alsobrooks launches bid for Maryland Senate seat

    [ad_1]

Maryland Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks officially launched her bid to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Ben Cardin on Tuesday.

Alsobrooks is the third candidate to throw their hat in the ring for the seat, a week after Cardin announced he would not run for reelection and created a wide-open race to succeed him. Montgomery County Council Member Will Jawando and Rep. David Trone have also announced their campaigns.

“There aren’t enough people in the US Senate who live like, think like and look like the people they’re supposed to represent. My Great-Grandma told me, ‘if you don’t like something, go farther and do better.’ I’m proud to say I’m running for the Senate. Let’s go farther together,” Alsobrooks said on Twitter.

  • DeSantis takes major step ahead of expected presidential bid

DeSantis takes major step ahead of expected presidential bid

    [ad_1]

The website for the committee was changed on Tuesday morning to say that its mission is “committed to advancing the Freedom Agenda and keeping Florida free.” But more importantly, the website was changed to say that the committee is associated with state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia and not DeSantis. The committee on Tuesday also filed paperwork that said Ingoglia replaced a Tampa accountant as the official chair of the organization.

Ingoglia is a Republican ally of DeSantis who sponsored several of the governor’s key legislative priorities during the recently concluded legislative session, including a crackdown on illegal immigration that includes $12 million for the governor’s controversial migrant relocation program.

A spokesperson with DeSantis’ political operation did not comment on the shift and Ingoglia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

DeSantis first set up his committee back in 2018 and he used it to raise a record amount of money for his re-election campaign last year as he pulled in donations from many major Republican donors. Current campaign finance records show that the committee has nearly $86 million in the bank.

But DeSantis cannot use money raised for Friends of Ron DeSantis in a federal race because state law does not limit how much someone can give to the political committee or the source of the donations. But that money could be shifted to a super PAC that backs DeSantis if the governor is no longer connected to the political committee. While some have questioned the legality of such a move, the Federal Elections Commission deadlocked over a similar strategy that was used by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.).

Ingoglia did not respond to a question about whether or not the political committee will shift money to a super PAC helping the governor’s bid for the White House.

This step comes as DeSantis ratchets up plans to start stumping for his White House bid.

After concluding a frenzied legislative session last week, the governor flew to the battleground state of Wisconsin — which former President Donald Trump won in 2016 and lost four years later — to make an appeal to the Marathon County GOP. On Saturday, he plans to hit the early voting state of Iowa to attend Rep. Randy Feenstra’s annual picnic. And next month he will head to Nevada, another early voting state, to headline an annual Basque fry event.

In the meantime, he has been hosting dinners with financial supporters at his official residence in Tallahassee, and trying to assure them he could win critical states like Georgia and Arizona, according to someone with knowledge who was granted anonymity to share details of the private discussions. And he recently dined with Evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats, who runs the conservative Family Leader in Iowa.

He has also been fine-tuning his stump speech as he goes on the road — seeking to bolster his arguments against President Joe Biden while figuring out a way to differentiate himself from Trump without alienating the ex-president’s loyal base.

“Joe Biden has done more to damage this country in two and a half years than any president in our lifetime,” he said during his speech in Wisconsin.

But DeSantis avoided any mention of Trump — instead highlighting his own electoral success in Florida in an attempt to underscore the weak performance by candidates tied to the ex-president, a frustration for many Republicans. He previewed a few other potential attack lines against his chief primary rival, calling out Trump’s former top Covid-19 advisor, Anthony Fauci, whose early pandemic guidance DeSantis proudly bucked.

But in a recent Newsmax interview, DeSantis directly responded to Trump’s attacks on the governor’s past support of cuts to Medicare.

“Those are Democrat attacks. I don’t think anyone really buys that,” DeSantis said about ads Trump’s PAC is running. “Donald Trump himself wrote a book where he was talking about the need to increase the age of eligibility for Social Security to 70 and said people shouldn’t be worried about retiring, just keep working.”

Polling consistently shows DeSantis trailing Trump in the primary but competing well in a head-to-head contest with Biden.

    new congress 21595

His primary competition is likely to include Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, who hired a campaign manager earlier this year and is expected to jump into the race soon. Alsobrooks, an ally of Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, will probably have the support of EMILY’s List. Another possible competitor: Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), who could easily run in the progressive lane. While in office, Trone has cast a more centrist profile. He is a member of the New Democrat Coalition and often touts his bipartisan credentials.

His district, which spans from the outskirts of Montgomery County to the state’s border with West Virginia, is the most competitive in the state. President Joe Biden won it by 10 points in 2020. Trone won reelection in 2022 against Republican Neil Parrott by 10 points.

Yet in an interview ahead of his launch, Trone repeatedly described himself as a progressive, just one with a pragmatic streak.

“I’m a progressive through and through,” he said, “but at the same time, you can be a progressive, and you can work with folks that are on the other side of the aisle to accomplish things.”

But his biggest asset is perhaps his bank account. Trone spent more than $13 million in 2016 in an unsuccessful attempt to win a House seat in the Washington, D.C. suburbs, losing in the primary to Raskin. Two years later he spent some $17 million in a neighboring seat and won.

Trone is willing to invest tens of millions of dollars into his statewide run, according to a person familiar with his plans who was granted anonymity because they were not at liberty to discuss them.

The congressman declined to detail how much he would be willing to invest but said that he thought voters would approve of his ability to eschew corporate PAC or lobbyist donations.

“It’ll take significant resources,” he said.

Trone’s campaign manager will be Dan Morrocco, who led Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont’s successful reelection bid in Connecticut in 2022.

The biggest remaining question mark is whether Raskin will enter the race. A progressive star who developed a national profile from his role investigating the Jan. 6 attacks, Raskin previously said he had been receiving encouragement to run. He just finished chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma and said the cancer was now in remission.

Won’t allow enemy to disturb peace in Valley: Army after foiling infiltration bid in Kupwara

    [ad_1]

Kupwara, May 04: Following the killing of two militants in Machil sector in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, Army on Thursday said that they are ready to foil any attempt made from across the border to push infiltrators into the Valley to disturb peace.

Addressing a press conference at Z Gali, as per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi said that operation in Machil sector on May 3 was conducted successfully leading to elimination of two infiltrators.

He said that intelligence agencies were regularly receiving inputs about possible infiltration. “It was learnt that infiltrators will be pushed from across the border. After inputs by the police high alert was sounded on May 01,” he said.

He said that following inputs additional ambushes were deployed at possible target places and special operation group of J&K police was also involved in this operation.

The Brigadier also said that the operation was conducted under challenging conditions as troops braved cold weather conditions and low visibility.

“Braving continuous snow, rain, overflow of water channels and challenging atmosphere, the operation was conducted successfully. Brave troops remained under open sky for more than 48 hours waiting for the infiltrators,” he said.

The Brigadier said that on May 03 an ambush spotted and killed two infiltrators. “They were fired at and two of them were killed. Entire area was searched and war like store along with eatables with Pakistan marking were recovered.”

He added that regularly efforts are being made from the other side of the border to disturb peace here. “All such efforts have been foiled. We are fully alert and every infiltration will be foiled,” he said while praising the troops deployed at forward areas.

Meanwhile, SSP Kupwara while addressing the press conference said that they will continue to foil any attempts of enemy. “Alert troops are deployed at LoC. We continue to work jointly with army and share every intelligence input. No one can cross the LoC and disturb peace here,” he said

  • JPMorgan Chase buys First Republic in bid to end bank turmoil

JPMorgan Chase buys First Republic in bid to end bank turmoil

    [ad_1]

    first republic bank 07914

The bank’s demise is the latest fallout from the stunning fall of SVB, which sparked runs at similar institutions, including Signature. These banks all had an unusually large number of deposits that weren’t backed by the FDIC because they catered to companies and wealthy individuals whose balances far exceeded the $250,000 deposit insurance limit.

That led to runs as depositors worried about the solvency of these banks, which all held significant portfolios of assets that had dropped in value.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon on a call with analysts said the banking system is stable, but acknowledged that “no crystal ball is perfect.”

“Hopefully this mini-bank crisis is over,” he said.

The Treasury Department in a statement said the banking system “remains sound and resilient, and Americans should feel confident in the safety of their deposits and the ability of the banking system to fulfill its essential function of providing credit to businesses and families.”

The FDIC will share some of the losses from First Republic’s portfolio of residential mortgages and commercial loans, and provide $50 billion in financing for the buyer, according to a press release from JPMorgan. The agency said it expects a $13 billion hit to its deposit insurance fund, which is financed by fees from banks.

In its release, JPMorgan said it has bought $173 billion in loans and $30 billion in securities. It will also assume $92 billion in deposits, “including $30 billion of large bank deposits, which will be repaid post-close or eliminated in consolidation.”

On March 16 — less than a week after uninsured depositors at SVB and Signature Bank were rescued by federal banking regulators — 11 of the nation’s largest financial institutions, including JPMorgan, deposited $30 billion into First Republic in an attempt to shore up its balance sheet.

The lender was slammed by more than $100 billion of withdrawals as panic swept across the regional banking sector last month, and the majority of uninsured deposits remaining at First Republic came from that infusion of cash.

The deal means government officials did not have to decide whether to once again back uninsured deposits at a failed bank, as they aim to keep calm in the banking sector.

FDIC board member Jonathan McKernan, a Republican who joined the agency in May, said he was “pleased we were able to deal with First Republic’s failure without using the FDIC’s emergency powers.”

“It is a grave and unfortunate event when the FDIC uses these emergency powers,” he said. “The March 12 rescue of SVB and Signature’s uninsured depositors was an admission that 15 years of reform efforts have not been a success,” arguing that the agency should “avoid the temptation to pile on yet more prescriptive regulation or otherwise push responsible risk taking out of the banking system.”

  • New York Stock Exchange exec mulling Michigan Senate bid

New York Stock Exchange exec mulling Michigan Senate bid

    773

Tuttle is only in the early stages of exploring a run. But his interest comes as Republicans have so far struggled to field any serious contenders for the seat. Democrats, meanwhile, have united quickly behind Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a strong fundraiser who ousted an incumbent GOP representative in 2018. Her launch spooked a slew of other prominent Michigan Democrats out of the race, though a handful of other potential candidates are still considering jumping in. The state went for President Joe Biden in 2020 but former President Donald Trump won it in 2016.

With his work based in Manhattan, Tuttle splits his time between New York City and Michigan. He is from Milford, Mich. in Oakland County and maintains deep ties to the state. He was the commencement speaker last year at Eastern Michigan University, his alma mater.

Tuttle, 41, has considered a run for Congress in the past. And he’s been somewhat politically active too. In his role as president of the NYSE Institute, he hosted Speaker Kevin McCarthy in April on Wall Street when he visited the stock exchange to give a speech on the debt limit. Tuttle conducted a brief question-and-answer session with McCarthy afterward.

A timeline for Tuttle’s decision was not clear. But he has spoken with Republicans in D.C. and Michigan about a possible run and the National Republican Senatorial Committee has shown interest in his candidacy.

“John Tuttle is a strong potential recruit in Michigan,” NRSC Chair Steve Daines (R-Mont.) said.

GOP Rep. John James, who won a Michigan House battleground seat last fall, declined to make a third run for Senate in 2024. (He lost to Stabenow in 2018 and Democratic Sen. Gary Peters in 2020.) Former Republican Rep. Peter Meijer is considering a run. Meijer lost his Grand Rapids-based House seat in 2022 after voting to impeach Trump, which could also be a liability in any Senate primary. Another potential GOP candidate is Kevin Rinke, who lost a primary bid to be the Republican nominee against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2022.

While Tuttle would have the funds to support a campaign and a major network of potential donors to tap, he is a political neophyte. Senate Republicans have actively been looking to recruit candidates who have fundraising prowess or large personal wealth after being vastly outraised by Democrats in the midterms.

Through his work, Tuttle knows former Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) and her husband, Jeffrey Sprecher, who is CEO of the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. Loeffler joined the Senate in 2020 after she was appointed by Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. But she lost to Democrat Raphael Warnock in a runoff election the following year, under attacks that her personal wealth made her disconnected from the needs of the state.

  • Manchester United keep WSL title bid on track with late win at Aston Villa

Manchester United keep WSL title bid on track with late win at Aston Villa

    [ad_1]

In the best traditions of Fergie-time, substitute Millie Turner headed home the latest possible winning goal to help Manchester United stretch their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League to six points.

The centre-back converted Katie Zelem’s much-disputed free-kick three minutes into added time to keep United’s dreams of a league and FA Cup double alive.

Marc Skinner had reckoned it was good to play ahead of title rivals – on the proviso United won. With Manchester City playing Leicester on Sunday and the Champions League semi-finalists, Chelsea and Arsenal, not in WSL action this weekend, this was United’s opportunity to put down their marker.

They may have played one more game than City – and three more than Chelsea, whom they lead by seven points – but the nature of this United comeback could yet power them to their first top-flight title.

Rachel Daly twice gave Villa the lead with superb finishes in the first half, against the meanest defence in the division, yet it was the shot she crashed against the crossbar at 2-1 early in the second half that will stick in the England player’s craw.

Skinner, the United manager, admitted Villa were the better side, especially in the first half, but invoked the club’s traditions under Sir Alex Ferguson in being able to win right at the death.

“It reinforces that we can do that,” he said. “It reinforces that the great Manchester United men’s teams never gave up until way into … well, it’s called ‘Fergie time’ for a reason, right? For me it shows much more about our mentality and it’s a massive sign of what we can achieve.”

Villa dominated United, especially with crosses into the box in the first half, with Lucy Staniforth particularly productive. Up against her former club, the midfielder’s corner invited Daly to time her run superbly and flash her header into the far corner. It was an outstanding, old-fashioned type of centre-forward’s goal.

Leah Galton equalised after Ona Batlle accelerated down the right flank to deliver such a fine low cross that the winger did not have to break stride to sidefoot in her ninth goal of the season.

United’s kept trying to play out from the back but Villa never gave them time, and Skinner admitted they should have played over the press more. “They were all over us, first half,” he said.

Rachel Daly scores Aston Villa’s second goal.

This was a cracking game, the tempo unrelenting. Anna Patten, the Villa centre-back, headed another Staniforth corner against the crossbar and United looked set to lose for only a second time in 19 games.

    skip past newsletter promotion

Yet at the other end, Hannah Hampton made a great reaction save from Galton and, just before half-time, Hayley Ladd was unfortunate to have a goal chalked off after Hampton, running into Galton, was adjudged to have been fouled.

By that stage Daly had moved level top of the WSL scorers with Bunny Shaw on 18. Maz Pacheco crossed low from the left and Daly was allowed enough time to sidefoot an expert low shot into the far corner with her left foot.

She so nearly completed her hat-trick on the hour. After a period of sustained United pressure, Villa counterattacked in devastating fashion. Nobbs played a reverse pass for Kenza Dali to cross for Daly to shoot against the bar.

How United made them pay. Within two minutes, Hannah Blundell crossed from the left wing and Nikita Parris, left unmarked, headed home the equaliser. With Russo heading over and United using all five substitutes, it seemed like their pressure was not going to pay. But then up stepped Turner.

It was a debatable decision for Maz Pacheco’s foul on Vilde Boe Risa. “It’s a tough one to take,” Villa manager, Carla Ward, said. “The lineswoman’s a yard away and there’s 20 seconds left and she says it’s no foul. The ref’s 30 yards away and says it’s a foul. We’ve had some big calls go against us. Something’s got to change. But my players have been absolutely outstanding.”

Sheikh Jassim lines up new Manchester United bid but below Glazers’ valuation

    [ad_1]

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is expected to lodge an improved third bid of less than £5bn for Manchester United by Friday’s 10pm BST deadline. The offer would be markedly less than the £6bn valuation of the club’s owners, the Glazers.

Sheikh Jassim, a Qatari banker, remains intent on purchasing 100% of the club but will not pay more than what he believes United are worth. The Guardian understands this is more than £1bn below the American family’s asking price.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the only other publicly declared buyer for a controlling interest, is thought to want to acquire a little more than 50%, leaving Joel and Avram Glazer with a 20% stake. Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest people, may have to borrow to complete that deal.

A third option may be that one or more of the Glazers retain their stake and take investment into the club, with Elliott Investment Management and the Carlyle Group interested in doing so.

The Raine Group, which is orchestrating the sale for the Glazers, has set the deadline in the hope of ending the protracted process in the coming weeks.
