Bengaluru: The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday ordered issuing of notices to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and others in a public interest litigation taken on its own over the death of two persons due to the collapse of an under-construction metro pillar here.

The BMRCL was given two weeks’ time to respond to the court.

The state government, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the BMRCL chief engineer and Nagarjuna Construction Company Limited are the other respondents in the case.

The High Court had initiated the suo-moto (on its own) PIL on January 13 following the death of software engineer Tejaswini and her two-year-old son when the pillar pier collapsed on the two-wheeler they were travelling in, near Hennur main road in the city on January 10.

The division bench of Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice S Vishwajith Shetty heard the petition that the court had itself directed the Registrar General to initiate.

While initiating the PIL earlier this month, the High Court had said it was taking cognisance of news reports about the incident. “These news items prompted us to take cognisance of the incident referred to wherein there is an unfortunate death of a lady and toddler son at the condition of roads, the issue raises concern and question for the public at large.”

Meanwhile, the BMRCL had suspended three engineers and issued notices to its contractor Nagarjuna Construction Company. The police had booked nine persons including officials of BMRCL.

  • 7 arrested in Bengaluru for smuggling endangered animals

7 arrested in Bengaluru for smuggling endangered animals

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested seven passengers, including a woman, for allegedly smuggling 18 endangered animals in their baggage at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru a few days ago.

Initially, three people were arrested. Their interrogation resulted in the arrest of four more people, the DRI said in a statement on Friday.

The recovered animals include extremely rare and threatened species like the Yellow and Green Anaconda, Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot, Nile Monitor, Red Foot Tortoise, Iguanas, Ball Pythons, Alligator Gar, Yaki Monkey, Veiled Chameleon, Racoon Dog, White Headed Piones, etc. which were handed over to Bannerghatta Biological Park, according to the DRI.

The passengers had arrived from Bangkok (Thailand) at the airport on January 22 when their baggage was checked following a tip-off and the animals were found in it, the DRI said.

“Upon examination of their checked-in baggage, it resulted in the recovery of 18 non-indigenous animals (four primates and 14 reptiles) with the assistance of Karnataka Forest Department officials,” the statement said.

The import of wild animals, including their parts and products as defined in the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 is prohibited.

The quick follow-up action with the assistance of Forest Department officials and an officer from Chennai, resulted in the recovery of another 139 animals belonging to 48 different species, including 34 CITES-listed species from a farmhouse in Bengaluru used as a place of storage of similarly smuggled wildlife, the DRI said.

“Those in possession of these animals neither had any documents of the wildlife items nor any filings under Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change (Wildlife Division), Voluntary Disclosure Scheme till its extended deadline of March 2021 were available,” the statement read.

However, evidence of financial transactions to source non-indigenous wildlife through the route of smuggling, transactions on WhatsApp, and other social media platforms have been unearthed, it added.

  • Bengaluru: Congress will purify Vidhana Soudha with cow urine once in power, says DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Congress will purify Vidhana Soudha with cow urine once in power, says DK Shivakumar

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Asking Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Ministers to “pack up” with assembly polls around, Karnataka Congress president D K Shivakumar on Tuesday said his party will come to power and purify the ‘Vidhana Soudha’ with ‘Ganjala’ (cow urine), alleging that it was polluted by corruption during the BJP rule.

Also, hitting out at the ruling BJP and Bommai for leveling “false allegations” against previous Congress regime led by him, Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah challenged the Chief Minister to constitute a Supreme Court Judge led inquiry commission to probe both tenures, if his government has the guts.

“It’s about 40-45 days left for your government, pack your tents and do whatever collection that is left and go. We will come with dettol to clean Vidhana Soudha. I have even got some Ganjala (cow urine) for purification….people are wanting to get rid of this evil government,” Shivakumar said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, “Bommai, better, tell all you ministers to pack up soon.”

The Congress leaders’ attack on the BJP government came a day after the ruling party filed a complaint with the Lokayukta against Siddaramaiah and Congress, alleging irregularities in ‘TenderSURE’ projects, during their tenure.

State Health Minister K Sudhakar, quoting a CAG report, had alleged that there were financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore under the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

Hitting back at Sudhakar’s allegations, Shivakumar asked as to what BJP was doing for the last 3.5 years. “They were in power and should have ordered an inquiry and got it investigated.”

BJP has a “brand” of 40 per cent commission, and to cover up they were trying to make baseless allegations against Congress, he said.

Questioning as to why BJP old timers were not speaking or reacting to allegations of corruption, and the ruling party was using someone like Sudhakar who had defected from the Congress to make counter allegations, he said, “You (BJP) are not able to make one person from your party speak. There are 32 groups in your party, I have got a list done…and you talk about us.”

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah, hitting back at Bommai and BJP for levelling corruption charges against the previous Congress government headed by him, demanded a probe by a Supreme Court judge headed commission about alleged scams and corruption charges from 2013 to till now.

“The allegations about 40 per cent commission, PSI recruitment and COVID scam- let all those allegations that we have made, be combined with the allegations that they (BJP) are making against us now, and together they be handed over to an inquiry commission headed by a Supreme Court Judge. If they have guts, let them do it,” he challenged.

Targeting Minister Sudhakar, Siddaramaiah said, “he was Congress MLA during our government. Why was he quiet?”

BJP is panicking with fear of defeat in the election and was making baseless allegations. Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) was repealed by High Court, not by the BJP government. “We did not shut the Lokayukta as alleged by BJP,” he said.

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: HARMAN, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, on Tuesday said it has taken strict legal action against dealers involved in the manufacture and sale of fake JBL and Infinity Car Audio products in the country.

HARMAN’s investigation team, along with the law enforcement officers, seized over 500 counterfeits as well as infringed JBL and Infinity car audio products.

The team discovered products in two places that were misusing the JBL mark as JBZ and IGL and selling counterfeit goods in packaging that was deceptively similar to that of JBL and Infinity.

The company said it seized those infringed goods and the offenders have been subjected to appropriate legal procedure.

HARMAN is the parent company for audio brands including JBL, AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, Lexicon, Mark Levinson and Revel, among others.

“We take stern action against any offenders trying to mislead our customers and advise them to purchase HARMAN products from authorised dealers only, while being wary of counterfeit products in the market,a said Vikram Kher, Vice President, Lifestyle, HARMAN India.

“HARMAN plans to carry out additional investigations to prevent the production and distribution of counterfeit goods in India,” Kher added.

Last year, the company conducted a similar raid along with the law enforcement officers, and seized stocks of spurious JBL and Infinity consumer products, from car accessories shops, and manufacturing units located across Delhi.
