Marianne Williamson begins 2024 challenge to Biden

Biden gave his own speech from Union Station just before last November’s elections, when he led Democrats to a surprisingly strong showing, urging voters to reject political extremism and saying “democracy itself” was at stake.

Williamson, whose red, blue and black campaign signs feature the dual slogans “A New Beginning” and “Disrupt the System,” says she’ll be campaigning in early-voting states on the 2024 election calendar.

That includes New Hampshire, which has threatened to defy a Biden-backed plan by the Democratic National Committee to have South Carolina lead off the nominating contests. Democrats and Republicans in New Hampshire have warned that if Biden skips the state’s unsanctioned primary and a rival wins it, that outcome could prove embarrassing for the sitting president — even if that challenger has no real shot of actually being the nominee.

Striking a defiant tone Saturday, Williamson denounced “those who feel they are the adults in the room” and aren’t taking her candidacy seriously, proclaiming, “Let me in there.”

“I have run for president before. I am not naïve about these forces which have no intention of allowing anyone into this conversation who does not align with their predetermined agenda,” she said. “I understand that, in their mind, only people who previously have been entrenched in the car that brought us into this ditch can possibly be considered qualified to bring us out of it.”

Luke Stowell, 20, a musician and student at American University in Washington who sat in the front row for Williamson’s announcement, said “she has a really nice message that incorporates all of the prejudices and the social structures that inhibit, I think, a lot of people on a daily basis.”

Seated next to him, 24-year-old American University law student Ivan Claudio noted that, should he win a second term, Biden would be in his late 80s by the time he leaves office and “I think it is a cause for concern.”

She didn’t mention Biden by name in her speech, and though Williamson noted that Trump not being reelected in 2020 kept the country from going “over the cliff,” she also said it was still “six inches” from doing so.

Williamson said she was opposing a free market “mindset” and corrupt political system that she said prioritized greed above all else “like an atomizer spray of economic injustice.”

“The American people have been trained to expect so little,” she said. “The American people have been played.”

A Texas native who now lives in Beverly Hills, California, Williamson is the author of more than a dozen books and ran an unsuccessful independent congressional campaign in California in 2014. In 2020, she was best known for wanting to create a Department of Peace and arguing the federal government should pay large financial reparations to Black Americans as atonement for centuries of slavery and discrimination.

Arguably her most memorable moment of that campaign came during a primary debate when she called for a “moral uprising,” but she dropped out of the race shortly before the leadoff Iowa caucuses began.

She said Saturday that the nation faced so many challenges, “I’m not saying one person can fix it. Not even one president can fix it.”

“But let me tell you something,” Williamson added. “A president who tells it like it is would do a lot of good.”

Congress begins ‘ByeByeKCR’ campaign ahead of Telangana polls

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress President Revamnth Reddy has begun a campaign against the chief minister K Chandrashekhar Rao ahead of assembly polls.

KCR, who visited Nizamabad district on Wednesday, said that he is getting old, which the TPCC caught and tweeted saying #ByeByeKCR.

Since then, the representatives and supporters of Congress are cited using the hashtag in their tweets.

Such campaigns have been used as a political strategy by opposition parties in the past decade and are often seen trending online and offline.

In the 2019 elections, slogans against the then Chandrababu government were raised saying ‘Bye Bye Babu’ where the YSR leaders including Jagan and Sharmila used to mention the slogan wherever they toured.

Revanth Reddy’s ‘Hath se Hath jodo yatra’ in the Bhimadevarapalli mandal of Hanmakonda district heard the party supporters chanting ‘Bye Bye KCR’ during the march.

The FC Barcelona begins the polls to sign Julián Álvarez

    [ad_1]

From the start of the season after his arrival at Manchester City, Julián Álvarez proved to be a youthful player with above-average talent. The Argentine forward, with everything and the presence of Erling Haaland within the club, scored a good number of goals, which was worth a place in the World Cup where his great explosion came. ‘La Araña’ won the place for Lautaro Martínez and was key for the representative from Albiceleste to win the world title.

However, after the World Cup finished and after returning at the beginning of 2023 with Manchester City, Julián has not added the desired minutes in Guardiola’s eleven. The Argentine striker has become a regular substitute and it wasn’t until this weekend that he returned to the starting lineup and that was revealed with a couple of goals. Julián is a weight forward, not a man on the bench and that is why there is already talk of his possible departure from City.

Sources in Spain report that FC Barcelona is very attentive to the present and future of Álvarez, a player the club has liked since he was at River Plate and who now attracts even more after his evolution so far this season. The culés would have had a first approach with their environment to carry out the survey and define if the footballer will be within the summer market and if so, how much money would have to be paid for the possible signing of him. A signing that will not be cheap.

China’s Communist Party begins key meeting to discuss major revamp, government

    [ad_1]

Beijing: China’s ruling Communist Party on Sunday began a key meeting to carry out a major revamp of the party and the government ahead of next month’s annual session of the Parliament.

The meeting of the Communist Party of China (CPC) plenum started its three-day plenary session in Beijing on Sunday, with President Xi Jinping, who is also the general secretary of the party, presenting a work report, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The Central Committee plenary session is being held ahead of the annual session of China’s Parliament, the National People’s Congress (NPC), and the top advisory body — the China People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) — in the first week of March.

During the NPC’s annual session, China will unveil a new leadership, including a new premier to succeed the incumbent Li Keqiang who is retiring. Barring Xi, most of the officials at the top were expected to be replaced.

Earlier this week, the political bureau of the party discussed the draft plan for the reforms of the CPC as well as state institutions and finalised recommendations to be submitted to the Central Committee plenary for approval.

The Central Committee which was elected at the once in five-year Congress of the party held in October last year consisted of 203 members and 168 alternate members.

Xi, 69, was re-elected for an unprecedented third five-year term by the Congress.

  • Countdown begins for Meghalaya Assembly polls, battle for Shillong in focus

Countdown begins for Meghalaya Assembly polls, battle for Shillong in focus

    [ad_1]

Shillong: After the high-pitched election campaigning, Meghalaya is all set to decide its political fate in the Assembly polls that are to be held on Monday.

Polling will be held at 3,419 polling stations across 59 Assembly constituencies in the state. The voting will begin at 7 am and continue till 4 pm on Monday.

Of the 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya, 36 constituencies fall in Khasi, Jaintia Hills region while 24 are in Garo Hills region.

Significantly, however, polling for the Sohiong Assembly constituency was postponed following the demise of the state’s former Home Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from the seat HDR Lyngdoh.

There are over 21 lakh electorates (21,75,236) of which 10.99 lakh are women and 10.68 lakh are male voters. In Meghalaya, the woman voters are in higher numbers than their male counterparts. There are about 81,000 first-time voters in the state.

As many as 369 candidates are in the fray of which 36 are women.

Of the total 3,419 polling stations, 120 will be all women-managed polling stations, 60 are model polling stations and another 60 will be PWD polling stations.

The Election Commission has deployed 119 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Meghalaya.

Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya FR Kharkongor said 640 polling stations are identified as ‘vulnerable’, 323 are ‘critical’ and 84 are identified as both.

The poll panel on Saturday ordered the sealing of Meghalaya’s International border with Bangladesh till March 2.

Meghalaya shares a 443 km border with Bangladesh and 885 km with Assam.

Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya FR Kharkongor, told ANI that, Meghalaya’s International border with Meghalaya and the state border with Assam have been sealed.

“We have taken preventive measures to ensure a free and fair election in the State. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed along the international bordering areas in the state,” Kharkongor said.

Meanwhile, the district magistrate of East Khasi Hills district on Friday issued an order that movement of individuals will remain strictly prohibited within a one km radius of the India-Bangladesh border of East Khasi Hills district between February 24 and March 2.

The district administration of East Khasi Hills district has also imposed Section 144 of CrPC along the bordering areas.

To ensure a free and fair election, Election Commission has banned publication of exit poll projections in Meghalaya from 7 am on Friday to 7 pm on the polling day — February 27.

The current term of the 60-seat Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will conclude on March 15.

The majority mark to form government in the state is 31.

In the 2018 Assembly polls, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) got 19 seats, Congress bagged 21 seats and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win two seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) grabbed six seats.

Though Congress emerged as the single largest party, the government was formed by the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) with support from UDP, BJP and other regional parties.

This time, the BJP and NPP have not stitched any prepoll alliance and are going solo. BJP and Congress have fielded candidates in all the seats. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), which became the main opposition party in Meghalaya in 2021 following the defection of 12 Congress MLAs, became a formidable force, especially after former chief minister Mukul Sangma joined its ranks. The TMC has fielded candidates in 58 seats.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is contesting from South Tura constituency. BJP fielded Bernard N Marak against the NPP chief. In Dadenggre, Congress candidate Chesterfield Sangma is contesting against NPP’s James Sangma.

Former CM Mukul Sangma is contesting from two seats — Tikrikilla and Songsak on Trinamool’s ticket. UDP leader Metbah Lyngdoh is contesting from Mairang. Further, NPP pitted Prestone Tynsong from Pynursla. UDP candidate Titosstar Well Chyne is contesting from Sohra.

TMC fielded Charles Pyngrope from Nongthymmai. BJP fielded Sanbor Shullai in South Shillong and Ernest Mawrie in West Shillong. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh is NPP’s candidate from East Shillong.

In Pynthorumkhrah, BJP fielded Alexander Laloo Hek. UDP leader Lahkmen Rymbui is contesting from Amlarem. In Sutnga Saipung, Congress fielded Vincent H Pala. UDP candidate Kyrmen Shylla is contesting from Khliehriat.

The campaigning for Meghalaya polls ended on Saturday.

From NPP to BJP and Congress to Trinamool, parties showcased all might when it comes to campaigning. Be it poll promises or attacking contending forces with slogans, the contesting parties lost no chance to have a go at each other during the campaign phase.

The BJP showed its strength, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president JP Nadda and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma holding rallies. PM Modi also held a roadshow in Shillong on Friday.

Rahul Gandhi, who was missing from the campaign scene in Tripura, held a rally in Shillong. Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee held public meetings in Meghalaya. TMC MP Mahua Moitra also canvassed for party candidates in the state.

The counting of votes will be done on March 2.

Are flats in Hyderabad better option for homebuyers?

For those considering buying a home in Hyderabad, the decision between investing in a plot or an apartment can be quite challenging. While flats in Hyderabad have their own advantages, investing in a plot has several benefits worth considering.

One of the significant advantages of buying an open plot in and around Hyderabad is the assurance of a premium, independent lifestyle and complete ownership of the land. Unlike flats, plots offer the possibility of a private and more spacious living environment without sharing land space with others.

Moreover, owning a plot gives buyers the option to design and construct their dream home with personal preferences in mind, including a backyard and ample parking space. In addition, plots tend to appreciate more than flats, providing a bigger resale value in the long run.

Overall, while both options have their unique benefits, buying a plot in Hyderabad can be a sound investment choice for those seeking a more private, personalized, and appreciating asset.

  • Apple begins laying off third-party contractors: Report

Apple begins laying off third-party contractors: Report

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: Apple, the only Big Tech company that has avoided mass layoffs to date, has reportedly started laying off third-party contractors.

The New York Post reported, citing people with direct knowledge, that the iPhone maker has started to cut ties with hundreds of contractors quietly.

“Instead of waiting for contracts that are typically renewed every 12 to 15 months to expire, Apple is firing contractors outright,” said the report, citing sources.

Apple did not comment on the report.

According to the report, firing contractors is a move to cut costs.

The company hasn’t disclosed the size of its contractor workforce, but reports suggest it numbers in the thousands.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had called layoffs at the company a “last resort kind of thing”, adding that “You can never say never”.

Cook had told the Wall Street Journal that Apple is managing costs very tightly.

“We want to manage costs in other ways to the degree that we can,” he was quoted as saying.

Apple faced supply chain disruptions in October and November as China faced Covid surge and protests erupted at its key supplier Foxconn’s main factory in the country.

Cook said that Covid-related challenges “significantly impacted the supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and lasted through most of December”.

As a result of a challenging environment, “our revenue was down 5 per cent year over year”, he added.

According to Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives, Apple didn’t overhire during the pandemic.

Apple’s employee count went up by about 7 per cent in 2022 compared to 2021.

Cook has already taken a huge pay cut of $35 million, or more than 40 per cent of his compensation.

  • Dominic Perrottet backs NSW ban on gay conversion practices as Sydney WorldPride begins

Dominic Perrottet backs NSW ban on gay conversion practices as Sydney WorldPride begins

    [ad_1]

A ban on gay conversion practices has secured the support of both major parties in New South Wales after Dominic Perrottet gave the reform “in-principle” backing on the first day of Sydney WorldPride.

“There is no room for any harmful practices in NSW, particularly if they affect our young and vulnerable,” the premier said. “When the parliament returns, my government will provide in-principle support for legislation that brings an end to any harmful practices.

“This is a complex matter and in working through it with parliamentary colleagues we will carefully consider the legal expression and effect of such laws.”

So-called gay conversion “therapy”, which has been outlawed in other east coast states, tries to change or suppress a person’s sexuality.

The Coalition’s support marks a major win for the independent Sydney MP, Alex Greenwich, who this month revealed he would introduce legislation to ban the practices.

At the time he said the major parties’ position on the bill would be key in a decision on who he would support in the case of a hung parliament after the 25 March state election.

“I’m grateful for the premier’s support to end LGBT conversion practices in NSW,” Greenwich said on Friday. “We start Sydney WorldPride with both Dominic Perrottet and Chris Minns backing legislation to support and protect the LGBTQ community in NSW. This is a good day for our state.”

Ghassan Kassisieh, the legal director of the national LGBTQ+ group Equality Australia, said the premier’s commitment was “a welcome first step”.

“Any scheme to end conversion practices will only be effective if it is inclusive of practices that seek to change or suppress a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity occurring in either health and religious settings, and include a civil scheme focused on stopping conversion practices before they cause harm,” he said.

Minns last week confirmed that a Labor government would ban the “dangerous and damaging” practices.

    skip past newsletter promotion

“We should not have a situation where children are being told something is wrong with them and that they need to be fixed,” he said.

Labor would set up a working group with survivors, advocates and government departments including NSW Health and justice to draft the laws, he said.

Key figures organising parts of Sydney WorldPride and Mardi Gras on Thursday issued a warning to the NSW government that the “world is watching”.

The 17-day festival celebrating LGBTQ+ pride kicks off on Friday and includes parties, a human rights conference and a march across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on 5 March that is tipped to attract half a million people.
