Parl panel pulls up govt over lack of basic amenities in Anganwadi centres

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A key financial panel of the Parliament has pulled up the government for paying poor remuneration to Anganwadi workers and helpers, asking it to revise their wages in a manner which is commensurate with their work.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC), a key financial panel of Lok Sabha, has also directed the government to provide facilities like drinking water and toilets in Anganwadis in a time-bound manner.

In its report, presented to the Parliament on Wednesday, the Ministry for Women and Child Development has been asked to revise and increase the remuneration of Anganwadi workers and helpers appropriately.

    MS Education Academy

It expressed dismay over the fact that despite earlier reminders about salaries of Anganwadi workers and helpers being low and unattractive, the ministry had not done much about it.

The committee noted that there are large number of vacancies in the posts of Anganwadi workers and helpers on account of meagre wages being paid to them.

“The critical role played by these Anganwadi workers and helpers during the Covid period cannot be ignored as they were tasked with distributing rations along with carrying out their main responsibilities pertaining to primary health care and immunisation, supplementary nutrition, educating families about family planning measures etc. The committee, therefore feels that it is high time that the Anganwadi workers get due recognition for the selfless and continuous services they have been providing,” it noted in its observations.

In this context, the panel, which is headed by Congress’ Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has asked the government to revise their wages in such a manner that the benefits and salaries being paid to them should be commensurate with the work that they have been performing and for this, the ministry should seek necessary budgetary support also.

The panel further noted that as many Anganwadi centres are functioning from temporary structures and semi-pucca premises, which may not have toilets or drinking water facilities, the ministry should moot a proposal for providing mobile toilets in states where the Anganwadi centres don’t have them.

Twitter launches new API with free, basic, enterprise tiers

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Elon Musk-run Twitter has launched its new paid API (Application Programming Interface) platform with free, basic, and enterprise access tiers.

The company shared the information on Twitter via its Twitter Dev account: “Today we are launching our new Twitter API access tiers! We’re excited to share more details about our self-serve access.”

Initially, the company had planned to shut down free access to its API on February 9, but later extended the deadline to February 13 and then again postponed it.

Moreover, these three levels include a basic free level primarily intended for content posting bots, a $100 per month basic level, and an expensive enterprise level.

In addition, subscribing to any level gets access to Ads API at no additional cost, according to the company.

“Introducing a new form of Free (v2) access for write-only use cases and those testing the Twitter API with 1,500 Tweets/month at the app level, media upload endpoints, and Login with Twitter,” the company said.

The company launched the Basic (v2) access tier for “hobbyists with 10,000 GET/month and 50,000 POST/month, two app IDs, and Login with Twitter for $100/month”.

Further, the microblogging platform encouraged businesses or scaled commercial projects to apply for its Enterprise tier to get managed services, complete streams, and access that meets their specific needs.

It also stated that old access tiers such as Standard (for v1.1), Essential and Elevated (for v2), and Premium will be phased out over the next 30 days.

New Social Media Guidelines Violate Basic Fundamental Rights: Mehbooba

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said the new social media guidelines for the Jammu and Kashmir government employees are in complete violation of the basic fundamental rights of people.

Taking to Twitter, Mehbooba wrote, “Whether it was blacklisting contractors & the social media gag to employees, a clear intimidation of dispossessing people in J&K of their livelihood has emerged. Authorities have become judge, jury & executioner in complete violation of the fundamental rights of people.”

Senior CPIM leader Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami also criticised the circular issued by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the use of social media by its employees stating that government cannot snatch the rights of employees guaranteed to them by the Constitution.

“Government employee is a citizen also and he has every right to exercise his freedom. A government employee can either support or oppose the government’s view and actions and depriving him of this right is against the law and the very principles of the Constitution,” Tarigami said.

Tarigami said that every criticism within the ambit of law and constitution is justified. “For this freedom and these rights, people have fought and now government can’t take these rights away from the citizens,” he said.

According to the new social media guidelines, no government employee shall, by any utterance, writing, or otherwise discuss or criticize in public or in any meeting of any association or body any policy pursued or action taken by the government nor shall he in any manner participate in any such discussion or criticism.

  • Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification goes against basic tenets of Constitution, says Sharad Pawar

Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification goes against basic tenets of Constitution, says Sharad Pawar

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as a Lok Sabha member was against the basic tenets of the Constitution and was a “condemnable” move that highlighted the curtailment of democratic values, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar has said.

Gandhi, representing Wayanad parliamentary constituency in Kerala, was on Friday disqualified from the Lok Sabha, a day after his conviction in a defamation case by a court in Surat in Gujarat.

The court sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remarks at a 2019 poll rally in Karnataka. However, the court also granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court.

Commenting on the development on Friday, the NCP supremo also referred to the disqualification of his party MP from Lakshadweep Mohammed Faizal P P following the latter’s conviction in an attempt to murder case. Faizal’s conviction was later suspended by the Kerala High Court.

“The disqualification of Mr Rahul Gandhi and Mr Faizal a few months ago as MPs of the Lok Sabha are against the basic tenets of the constitution, where democratic values are being curtailed. This is condemnable and against the very principles on which the constitution is based,” Pawar tweeted.

“Our constitution guarantees the right of each Individual to fair justice; liberty of thought; equality of status and opportunity and fraternity assuring the dignity of each Indian. #RahulGandhi,” the former Union minister said in a series of tweets.

We all need to stand together to defend our democratic institutions, he added.

UK govt failed miserably in its basic responsibility: Jairam Ramesh

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: As the Punjab government cracks down on self-styled radical preacher Amritpal Singh, the tricolour flying atop the Indian High Commission in London was grabbed at by a group of protesters on Sunday, who were waving separatist flags and chanting pro-Khalistani slogans.

The Congress on Monday condemned the incident in London and blamed the UK government for failing to protect the Indian High Commission there.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said, “The pulling down of the national flag at the Indian High Commission in London by pro Khalistani elements is totally unacceptable and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The British government has failed miserably in its most basic responsibility and must be held accountable.”

Several opposition parties have said that the responsibility of protecting the Indian embassies and high commissions abroad lies with the host country, and the Indian government must take up the matter diplomatically with these countries, including the UK, Canada, Australia, the US etc.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “This can’t be allowed and the External Affairs Ministry should take the matter to the host countries to protect the high commissions and embassies.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi said, “UK government should apologise to India and take action against the miscreants.”

Late on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had summoned the senior-most UK diplomat in India to lodge its protest after some pro-Khalistani groups allegedly took down the tricolour at the Indian High Commission in London.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had tweeted: “India lodges strong protest with the UK,” along with a MEA statement.

Sisodia given basic items, food as per jail manual: Officials

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Excise scam case accused and former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia is lodged in a Tihar prison cell for senior citizens and like any other inmate, has been given basic items and is being served food as per the prison manual, officials said on Tuesday.

The senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was brought to the prison here on Monday, shortly after a CBI court remanded him to 14-day judicial custody till March 20 in the case.

A source said Sisodia brought a copy of the Bhagavad Gita along with him. Other items allowed by the court are yet to be received from his home. Sisodia also received some extra clothes on Tuesday, the source added.

On Monday night, he was given basic items such as blankets, soap and oral hygiene products, and for dinner, was served rice, chappati, dal, among others, according to the jail manual, an official said.

Every prison has a library and every inmate is its member. If anyone wants to have a book, they can avail it from there, the officials said.

Before being sent to his cell, he underwent a medical examination, they said.

The court has allowed Sisodia to carry the Bhagavad Gita, a pair of spectacles and medicines to jail and directed the Tihar authorities to consider his request to be allowed to do Vipassana meditation.

The CBI arrested Sisodia last week in connection with alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy for 2021-22.

  • Can’t help a country if their basic industry is terrorism: Jaishankar on Pak

Can’t help a country if their basic industry is terrorism: Jaishankar on Pak

    [ad_1]

Pune: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday virtually dismissed the idea of helping Pakistan to come out of its economic mess.

Speaking at the annual Asia Economic Dialogue organised by the external affairs ministry here, Jaishankar said he will consider the local public sentiment while making a big decision.

“I would have a pulse (on) what do my people feel about it. And I think you know the answer,” he said.

Pakistan is grappling with an economic crisis and has not been successful in getting an agreement from multilateral institutions either. In the recent past, India has helped neighbours like Sri Lanka as it struggled to come out of its economic woes and regularly helps others in the neighbourhood as well.

However, when it comes to Pakistan, the fundamental issue impacting the New Delhi-Islamabad ties is terrorism, Jaishankar said, adding that one must not be in denial of this problem.

“No country is ever going to come out of a difficult situation and become a prosperous power if its basic industry is terrorism.

“Just as a country has to fix its economic issues, a country has to fix its political issues too, a country has to fix its social issues,” he said without naming Pakistan.

Jaishankar also made it clear that it is in nobody’s interest to see a country get into severe economic difficulties, and that too a neighbour.

Once a country is in the throes of a serious economic problem, it has to make policy choices to get out of it, the career diplomat-turned-politician said, adding that others cannot solve it for the country.

The world can only provide options and support systems, Jaishankar said, making it clear that Pakistan will have to make “tough choices”.

He said India has also undergone the same challenges several times in its modern history, with the last one being 30 years ago with the balance of payment crisis.

Meanwhile, Jaishankar said ever since Narendra Modi came to power in 2014, the country’s approach to the neighbouring countries has undergone a perceptible change and also reminded all about the Prime Minister’s decision to call heads of state for the swearing-in function to start a new relationship.

Citing the case of Maldives, he said India’s help in the recent past includes the Greater Male project and also added that he was present at the foundation stone laying event a few weeks ago.

India is also buying or selling power with many of its neighbours, Jaishankar said, adding that it recently started buying power from Nepal.

Going forward, the country is also mulling to up its focus on education and healthcare spending in the neighbourhood, Jaishankar said.

He also assured that India will also be using its G-20 presidency to give a voice to the problems of the ‘global south’ and asserted that India is the best-placed country to do that.

The prime minister and his top ministers have spoken to 125 countries in the past month in India’s effort to be an effective voice of the global south, Jaishankar said.

Speaking at the same event, Maldives’ Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer said climate finance is a big challenge and expected help to flow through on the commitment at the earliest. His counterpart from Bhutan, Lyonpo Namgay Tshering said an easing of global financial conditions is also the need of the hour.

Jaishankar said there are multiple second and third-order impacts of the major world events and policy decisions, which India will be flagging to the world as part of its G-20 presidency.

The EAM also said that the G-20, with nearly 200 events across the country, is a marketing of India to influential people across the world by exposing them to cultural and socio-economic changes taking place in the country.
