Dhaka: A devastating fire broke out at a multi-storied building in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka, with no death reported so far.

At least seven fire engines were fighting the fire on the sixth floor of the 12-storey building in Dhaka’s diplomatic area Gulshan, which is sending thick black smoke into the air visible at least several km away.

The cause of the fire, which broke out around 7 p.m. local time, has not been ascertained with the security officials yet to comment on the incident, Xinhua news agency reported.

No one knows how many are trapped inside the burning building though dozens of people were shortly evacuated from the building.

Several people reportedly jumped off the building in a bid to save themselves from the blaze.

  • Mentioning marital status not mandatory for admission: Bangladesh HC

Mentioning marital status not mandatory for admission: Bangladesh HC

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: The Bangladesh High Court on Thursday ruled that mentioning marital status is not mandatory for getting enrolled in educational institutions.

A bench of Justices Naima Haider and Justice Md Khairul Alam delivered the verdict after hearing a writ petition.

Deputy Attorney General Amit Das Gupta represented the state while Aneek R Haque appeared for the writ petitioner during hearing on the rule.

On November 14, 2017, lawyers Fariha Ferdous and Nahid Sultana Jeni had filed the writ in the form of public interest litigation in the High Court following a news report titled “What will the girl do now?”

As per the report, a girl, the daughter of a day labourer, was raped in 2013 when she was a Secondary School Certificate examinee. The rapist was sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime. The rape had resulted in pregnancy and she gave birth to a baby.

However, the rape survivor was denied admission to a nursing college as she had not identified herself as “estranged” in the application form as “asked” by the college authority.

The HC on December 11, 2017 issued the rule questioning the legality of the educational institutions’ action seeking information on marital status of admission seekers.

The court issued a rule asking the government authorities to explain as to why such an action of inquiring about the marital status of admission seekers should not be declared unconstitutional.

The court also asked the authorities to enroll the female student to Rajshahi Government Nursing College.

  • Shahabuddin Chuppu set to become next Bangladesh president

Shahabuddin Chuppu set to become next Bangladesh president

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Mohammad Shahabuddin Chuppu, a former judge and freedom fighter, is set to become Bangladesh’s next president after the ruling Awami League, which holds an absolute majority in Parliament, nominated him for the top post.

Chuppu, 74, will replace President Mohammad Abdul Hamid, whose tenure ends on April 24.

“The Election Commission (EC) has received his (Chuppu’s) nomination paper submitted by Bangladesh Awami League,” a spokesman of the independent statutory body said.

He said the EC would now accomplish the procedural formalities for his election by Members of Parliament.

The Awami League has 305 seats in the 350-member House.

The tenure of Hamid, the longest-serving president of the country, will end on April 23, and according to the Constitution, he cannot hold a third term.

Senior Awami League leader and seven-time lawmaker Hamid was elected Bangladesh president in the last two elections. He was sworn in for his second term on April 24, 2018.

Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina greeted Shahabuddin with a flower bouquet after the submission of his nomination.

EC officials and political analysts said Chuppu’s installation as the 22nd president of Bangladesh was now a matter of mere formalities as the official Opposition in Parliament Jatiya Party decided against nominating anyone for the highest office.

“Everything is Allah’s will,” Chuppu was quoted as saying by the Dhaka Tribune newspaper.

“There is no reaction now. This is Almighty Allah’s will,” he told reporters after submitting his nomination paper at the Election Commission.

The main Opposition outside Parliament, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), cannot nominate anyone since all of its seven lawmakers resigned in December 2022 as part of their anti-government campaign ahead of general elections expected to be held in December this year.

Obaidul Quader, the General Secretary of the Awami League, meanwhile, told reporters that Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) had entrusted Prime Minister Hasina with the task of nominating a candidate for the presidency and she nominated Chuppu.

After his retirement as a district and sessions judge, Chuppu served as one of the commissioners of the independent Anti-Corruption Commission. He later joined politics and become a member of the Awami League Advisory Council, which comprises senior party leaders and technocrats.

However, Chappu will have to relinquish the party post to become the titular head of the State.

Born in the northwestern Pabna district, Chuppu was a leader of Awami League’s student and youth wings in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Chappu also took part in the 1971 Liberation War and was imprisoned for waging a protest after the August 15, 1975 assassination of Bangladesh’s founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — the father of Prime Minister Hasina — in a military coup along with most of his family members.

The coup also led to the toppling of the Awami League government. In 1982, he was inducted into the country’s judicial service.

Chuppu served as the coordinator of the Bangabandhu murder trial when Awami League returned to power in the 1996 elections.

Chuppu’s wife Rebeka Sultana is the former joint secretary to the government. The couple has one son.

  • Kuwaiti woman goes missing in India, found in Bangladesh: Police

Kuwaiti woman goes missing in India, found in Bangladesh: Police

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: A 31-year-old woman from Kuwait who had arrived in India for treatment and went missing from Kolkata last month has been spotted in neighbouring Bangladesh this week, a police officer said here on Thursday.

After a thorough investigation, the Kolkata Police informed the Kuwaiti Embassy that the woman, along with a man, has crossed the international border to enter Bangladesh.

“It was then the Kuwaiti Embassy sought the help of Bangladesh and the woman was found from a house in that country on Monday. The police there have handed her over to the Kuwaiti authorities,” the police officer said.

The woman came to Kolkata with her younger brother on January 20 and put up at a five-star hotel in East Kolkata. She was getting treatment for some skin-related problems in a private hospital.

After a tour of other tourist attractions of Kolkata, she along with her younger brother had gone to Alipore zoo on January 27 from where she went “missing”, the officer said.

Her brother then went to Alipore police station and informed the officer “in broken English” about what had happened.

As her mobile phone containing a Kuwaiti sim could not be tracked, the police started examining CCTV footage.

“CCTV footage showed that she got into a yellow taxi with a man wearing a suit, a cap and a mask. So, identifying him was tough. We spotted the taxi driver and got to know that they got down near Marquis Street (in central Kolkata),” the senior police officer said.

From there, they took another taxi and reached the Bangladesh border near Bangaon in the neighbouring North 24 Parganas district.

“Then they could not be spotted anywhere inside the Indian territory. Based on the description and after scanning hundreds of CCTV footage, we got a photograph of the man who is probably a Bangladeshi national,” he said.

A red alert was issued against the man. The staff of the Alipore Police Station and Anti-Rowdy Section of Kolkata Police talked to their sources and after it was clear that they have crossed the international border, they informed the Kuwaiti Embassy in New Delhi.

The embassy has sent an appreciation letter to the Kolkata Police lauding the role of its officers in helping them rescue the woman, the officer added.

No details on what happened to the man who apparently is her beau, nor the location in Bangladesh from where the Kuwaiti citizen was found were shared with the media.

  • Miscreants vandalise 14 Hindu temples in northwestern Bangladesh

Miscreants vandalise 14 Hindu temples in northwestern Bangladesh

    [ad_1]

Dhaka: Unidentified miscreants vandalised 14 Hindu temples in northwestern Bangladesh in a series of orchestrated attacks overnight, police said on Sunday.

“Unidentified people carried out the attacks under the cover of darkness, vandalising idols in 14 temples in three unions (lowest local government tier),” said Bidyanath Barman, a Hindu community leader at Baliadangi) “upazila” or “sub-district” in Thakurgaon.

Barman, the general secretary of the upazila’s Puja Celebration Council, said some of the idols were destroyed while some were found in pond waters along the temple sites.

“We are in the dark about their (culprits) identity but we want to bring them to justice after investigations,” Barman said.

The Hindu community leader and union parishad chairman Samar Chattarjee said the region was always known to be an area of excellent interfaith harmony as “no such heinous incident took place here in the past”.

“The (majority) Muslim community does not have any dispute with us (Hindus) we just cannot understand who could be these culprits,” he said.

Baliadangi police station’s officer in-charge Khairul Anam said the attacks took place between Saturday night and Sunday dawn at several villages.

“It clearly appears to be a case of an orchestrated attack to disrupt the peaceful situation of the country,” Thakurgaon’s police chief Jahangir Hossain told reporters at one of the temple sites.

He added that a police investigation was launched immediately to track down the miscreants. “I assure you they will have to face stern legal actions,” he said.

“This (attack) is the manifestation of a conspiracy against peace and communal harmony this is a serious crime and the perpetrators will face the music,” Thakurgaon’s deputy commissioner or administrative chief Mahbubur Rahman said.
