    SRINAGAR: A 3-year-old body died after he drowned in a water tub in Muqama locality of Kralgund in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday.

    As per reports, a 3-year-old boy identified as Mohammed Saudais, son of Altaf Ahmad Baba from Muqam Kralgund, fell into the water tub outside his home and drowned.

    However he was immediately referred to a nearby hospital for treatment, where doctors declared him brought dead on arrival.

    SRINAGAR: According to the police, a man who worked for the Jal Shakti Department was arrested on Monday for supposedly raping a woman in Samba district, Jammu and Kashmir.

    The accused, who resides in Ramgarh, pretended to be a “tantrik” capable of healing skin ailments.

    The police official stated that the arrest was made after a rape case was filed against the employee as directed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Samba. A woman in her middle age claimed that she was sexually assaulted by the accused at his home after he posed as a ‘tantrik’ with extraordinary healing abilities to treat her skin ailment.

    The victim was reportedly tricked by the accused during a visit to a temple.

    Benam Tosh, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Samba, stated that the police’s top priority is to combat crimes against women in the district. (Agencies)

    SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir Police on Monday said to have arrested two thugs claiming to be black magic practitioners in Central Kashmir’s Srinagar district.

    A Police spokesperson said, two thugs claiming to be black magic practitioners were arrested for duping a person of Rs 40,000 after giving him lift in their car at Nalabal.

    They have been identified as Akhter Ahmed shah & Riyaz Ahmed both residents of Nadihal Dangiwacha Baramulla.

    “As powerful agents of Socio-Economic change and engines of rural development, Panchayats are making a significant contribution to the nation building and empowering the citizens to meet the challenge of sustainable development,” said the Lt Governor.

    Collective efforts of common man and Panchayats are playing an important role in realizing big dreams of small villages of UT. By establishing and strengthening three-tier grassroots democracy in J&K, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ensured rapid and inclusive development, added the Lt Governor.

    The Lt Governor urged all the public representatives to give priority to the underprivileged to realise the Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of Poorna Swaraj through Gram Swaraj. Our efforts should also focus on removing developmental imbalances, he added.

    “Rural growth is the main pillar of the Country’s development and to achieve our objectives, Gram Panchayats will have to play a major role in economic empowerment of all the citizens, ensuring benefits reaching the last mile & active participation in grassroots planning and execution,” said the Lt Governor.

    The Lt Governor said the historic visit of  Narednra Modi to Palli laid the foundation for making panchayats in the UT strong and Atmanirbhar

    The Lt Governor highlighted the major steps taken to strengthen grassroots democracy in Jammu Kashmir.

    “Devolution of Funds, Functions & Functionaries and seamless coordination at each of the levels of three-tier system of Panchayati Raj has given tremendous boost to aspirations of rural society. It is our firm resolve to make PRIs more powerful, efficient and effective,” the Lt Governor added.

    The Lt Governor also spoke on progressive policies and schemes aimed at increasing farmers’ income, enhance their skills and directly connect them with various Centrally Sponsored and UT’s schemes.

    The Lt Governor called upon the elected representatives to complement government’s efforts in implementation of the groundbreaking 29 projects worth Rs. 5013 crore for the holistic development of agriculture & allied sectors.

    I am confident that the success of this Holistic Agriculture development plan will guide the prosperous future of Jammu Kashmir and help in doubling the contribution of agriculture sector in J&K’s GDP in the next 5 years, he said.

    The Lt Governor also inaugurated Smriti Kaksh and flagged off ‘SwachhtaKarwan’ to mark the occasion.  A compendium on Amrit Sarovars & Coffee Table Book on the capacity building & training of Elected Representatives of J&K was also released.

    SRINAGAR: IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar on Monday said that it is shifting the office to Saida Kadal area of Srinagar for the benefit of learners and other stakeholders.

    In a statement, the spokesperson said that the shifting is being made in the interest of the learners and other stakeholders.

    “The new office is located on the Dalgate-Kashmir University Road and is very well connected. We are confident that this change will allow us to enhance our Student Support Services and meet the expectations of our Learners,” reads the statement.

    It reads all the IGNOU learners and other stakeholders are informed that the shifting of the office of IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar will start from tomorrow so that the office will remain closed for routine work from tomorrow and all the communication from April25 to 28 may be done on the official email of IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar only.

    It added that the IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar will start normal functioning from the new office from May 1 onwards.

    “The learners are informed not to visit the office of the IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar from April 25 to 28. All stakeholders are informed to update their office records and make necessary changes in the office address of IGNOU Regional Centre Srinagar so as to ensure that all future correspondence is directed/send to our new office address,” it added.     SRINAGAR: After Srinagar the authorities on Monday attached the property of Syed Salahuddin’s another son in Soibugh area of central Kashmir’s Budgam district under UAPA.

    An official said that the property of Shahid Yousuf was attached on the orders of NIA special court New Delhi today in Soibugh Budgam.

    “As per NIA notice, immoveable property, i.e. 02 kanals of land bearing Khewat no. 206, Khata no. 677, located at Revenue Estate, Soilbugh under the ownership of Shahid Yousuf (son of Syed Yousuf Shah @ Syed Salahuddin, a listed terrorist under UA(P)Act, 1967 and Chief of Hizbul Mujahideen), an accused in NIA Case RC-06/2011/NIA/DLI, stands attached under sub-section 33 (1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 by the Order of Special NIA Court. Patiala House, New Delhi,” the official said.

    SRINAGAR: A Cordon & Search Operation (CASO) which was launched in the Padshahi Bagh area of Srinagar outskirts has concluded peacefully on Monday late afternoon.

    Local sources said that joint forces cordoned off Naikpora area of Padshahi Bagh and conducted door-to-door searches.

    “A large number of troops and cops arrived in dozens of vehicles and cordoned off our locality. They went from house to house and conducted searches and checked the identity cards of locals. Even drones were pressed into service during the search operation,” said a local.

    The cordon was lifted after over 3 hours of the search operation, he added.

    Police sources also confirmed saying that information about the suspicious movement had been received from the area. They said no arrests were made during the search operation. [KNT]

    Director Rajkumar Hirani and his team scouted locations in Sonamarg the previous week before heading to Kashmir. The crew has arrived in the region, and it is expected that Khan will shoot a song with choreographer Ganesh Acharya.

    Hotelier Mushtaq Chayya expressed enthusiasm for Bollywood’s arrival, stating, “We are eagerly waiting for Bollywood to come here. We are ready with all facilities and will develop infrastructure further.”

    SRINAGAR: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has attached the property of Hizb Chief Syed Salahuddin’s son in the Kashmiri capital of Srinagar.

    In this regard, the NIA has issued a notice stating that the immovable property located at Survey No. 1917/1566, 1567, and 1568 in Revenue Estate, Nursing Garh, Mohalla Ram Bagh, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, and under the ownership of Syed Ahmad Shakeel (son of Syed Yousuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin, a ‘listed militant’ under UA(P) Act, 1967), is now attached under sub-section 33 (1) of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, 1967 by the Order of the Special NIA Court in New Delhi.

    According to the notice issued by the NIA, Syed Ahmed Shakeel is an accused in NIA Case RC-06/2011/NIA/DLI.

    SRINAGAR: Ministry of Jal Shakti released the first ever census of Water Bodies in convergence with the 6th Minor Irrigation (MI) Census under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme “Irrigation Census.”

    The census highlighted disparities between rural and urban areas, encroachments and also revealed crucial insights into the country’s water resources. Census also offers a thorough inventory of India’s water resources, including both natural and artificial water bodies including ponds, tanks, lakes and more.

    According to the census, 24,24,540 water bodies have been enumerated in the country, of which 97.1% (23,55,055) are in rural areas and only 2.9% (69,485) are in urban areas.

    According to the maiden census report  there are over 24 lakh water bodies across the country, and over 9,700 water bodies in the Union Territory of J&K, of which over 76 per cent are ‘in use’ while over 23 per cent have been categorized as ‘not in use’, defining them as ‘dried up beyond repair’.

    As per the census, a total of 9,765 water bodies have been enumerated in J&K, out of which 99.2% (9,687) are in rural areas and the remaining 0.8% (78), are in urban areas, noting that the majority of the water bodies are ponds.

    The census further reveals that over 2272 not-in-use water bodies in J&K and Ladakh, including 2026 ponds, 29 tanks, 6 Lakes, 26 reservoirs, 6 water conservation schemes/percolation tanks/ check dams, and 169 others. Further, out of 9765 water bodies, 5016 are public owned, and 4749 are private owned.

    As per the census, 7431 water bodies are in use in rural areas, out of which 718 are used for irrigation, 12 for industrial, 97 for pisciculture, 5935 are for domestic/ drinking, 19 are recreation, 49 are for religious, 129 are for groundwater recharge, 472 are others.

    As per the major results, 48.6% (4,749) are privately owned water bodies across J&K, whereas the remaining 51.4% (5,016) are under public ownership. By location, 27 water bodies are located in flood-prone areas and 1,144 water bodies are located in tribal areas.

    Out of all water bodies, the census noted, 76.7% (7,493) water bodies are ‘in use’ whereas the rest 23.3% (2,272) are not ‘in use,’ “on account of drying up, destroyed beyond repair and other reasons.”

    Out of ‘in use’ water bodies, the census highlighted, a major proportion of water bodies are used for domestic/ drinking purposes followed by irrigation purposes.

    The census also noted that J&K has reported encroachment in 103 water bodies out of all the enumerated water bodies, of which 95, it stated, are ponds. Out of 9,765 water bodies, the information on the ‘water spread area’ was reported in 9,759 water bodies.

    Out of these 9,759 water bodies, the results note, 98.4% (9,602) of the water bodies have a water spread area of fewer than 0.5 hectares, whereas, 1.1% (104) water bodies have a water spread area between 0.5 hectares to 1.0 hectares and the remaining 0.5% (53) water bodies have more than one-hectare water spread area; in terms of storage capacity while 74.1% (7,238) water bodies have storage capacity between 0 to 100 Cubic Meters.

     

    According to the census, 9209 water bodies in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh have never been repaired. Only 115 water bodies were repaired before 2009. In 2009, 11 water bodies were repaired; 51 in 2010; 20 in 2011; 34 in 2012; 71 in 2013; 38 in 2014; 59 in 2015; 24 in 2016; 54 in 2017; 34 in 2018, and 45 were repaired after 2018.
