‘Congress backing terrorism by opposing Kerala Story’: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

Ballari: Prime Minister Narendra Modi while addressing a poll rally in Karnataka on Friday launched an attack on the Congress and accused the Opposition party of opposing “The Kerala Story” film, which he said exposed the consequences of terrorism.

“‘The Kerala Story’ film is based on a terror conspiracy. It shows the ugly truth of terrorism and exposes the design of terrorists”, the PM said adding that Congress is standing with terrorists who are trying to ban the film.

Addressing a rally in Ballari ahead of the upcoming May 10 elections in Karnataka, the Prime Minister also accused the Congress party for shielded terrorism for the vote bank.

“Congress is opposing the film made on terrorism and standing with terror tendencies. Congress has shielded terrorism for the vote bank”, PM Modi said.

“The Congress has kneeled down before the terror outfits when in power. We have suffered because of the violence for very long and Congress never protected this country from terrorism. I am surprised to see that Congress has succumbed to terrorism for the sake of its vote bank. Can such a party ever save Karnataka?,” PM Modi said.

Security system, law and order is the most important requirement to make Karnataka number one state of country, the prime minister said. “It is equally important for Karnataka to remain free from terrorism. BJP has always been tough against terrorism. But Congress gets stomach ache whenever action is taken on terrorism,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also attacked the Congress manifesto released for the Karnataka polls which promised to ban organisations like the Bajrang Dal.

“The Congress is shuddering to see the support we are getting. They get scared even if I say Jai Bajrangbali,” PM Modi said.

Lashing out at the Congress the prime minister said that the Congress had long back accepted that it’s an 85 per cent commission party. “Congress’ former PM Rajiv Gandhi himself told that his government sent 100 paise from Delhi, but only 15 paise reached the poor. In a way, he himself accepted that Congress is a party with 85 per cent commission,” the prime minister said.

Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court today refused to issue a stay order on the release of ‘The Kerala Story’.

Asserting that secular Kerala society will accept the film for what it is, the High Court today asked petitioners how the movie, which it observed is fiction and not history, would create sectarianism and conflict in the society.

The court sought to know whether the entire trailer was against society.

“Nothing will happen just because the film is screened. The teaser of the film was released in November. What was offensive in the film? What is wrong in saying that Allah is the only God? The country gives the citizen the right to believe in their religion and God and spread it. What was offensive in the trailer?”, the court observed while considering a batch of petitions seeking to cancel the censor certificate of the film.

“So many movies have already come out about such organizations. There have been references against Hindu monks and Christian priests in many films before. Did you see all this in the way of fiction? What is so special now? How does this movie create sectarianism and conflict in society?”, the court observed.

The petitioners argued that the film would inject poison into the minds of innocent people and added that no agency has yet detected the existence of ‘Love Jihad’ in Kerala.

Helmed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film has triggered a massive political row with various leaders reacting to the upcoming movie.

‘The Kerala Story’ stars Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in the lead roles. The trailer of Sen’s film ‘The Kerala Story’ came under fire as it claimed that 32,000 girls from the state went missing and later joined the terrorist group, ISIS.

Faced with backlash the makers then withdrew the figure and called the movie the story of three women from Kerala, in its trailer description.

NEW YORK — A House Democrat stepped into the fray around Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation of Donald Trump, holding a rally in support of the progressive prosecutor Monday after his Republican counterparts demanded information about the probe.

“We are here to say let the process continue and no one is above the law, not even a president of the United States,” said Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who represents Upper Manhattan, at a Harlem rally attended by a dozen other local Democratic leaders.

On Saturday Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), James Comer (R-Ky.) and Bryan Steil (R-Wis.) — the chairs of the Judiciary, Oversight and Administration Committees, respectively — sent a letter to Bragg setting a March 31 deadline for documents from his office about possible federal funding or involvement in his work. They also want Bragg to testify in private. The asks are voluntary since the Republican leaders have not issued a subpoena.

Shinde faction minister needles NCP for backing NDPP-BJP govt in Nagaland

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: A Maharashtra minister belonging to Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led faction of the Shiv Sena on Thursday taunted the Nationalist Congress Party for extending support to the newly-formed government in Nagaland, and wondered whether any monetary transaction was involved in the move.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, state Water Supply Minister Gulabrao Patil said the NCP has been criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by labelling it as a communal party, while in Nagaland it has extended support to the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)-BJP alliance government.

“Has there been any monetary understanding?” he asked.

Leader of Opposition Ajit Pawar took a strong objection saying the BJP is in power in the state and the Centre and can probe the matter.

“What is the need to rake up political development in a north-eastern state here? Some decisions have to be taken in national interest,” he said.

The NCP extended its support to the newly-formed Nagaland government led by NDPP leader and Chief Minister N Rio. The BJP has already given support to the NDPP.

The Sharad Pawar-led party won seven seats in the recently-held polls to the 60-member Nagaland Assembly. After the formation of the NDPP-BJP government, it was expected that the NCP will be the main Opposition party in the state.

  • Mitch Daniels rips his critics after backing away from Senate bid

Mitch Daniels rips his critics after backing away from Senate bid

    [ad_1]

In an interview with POLITICO, Daniels punched back.

“David perfected the art of losing elections in Indiana,” Daniels said of his one-time Reagan administration colleague and a former Indiana congressman who lost the 2000 gubernatorial election to Democrat Frank O’Bannon by a double-digit margin as well as a 2012 congressional primary to Susan Brooks in the 5th Congressional District. “Now he makes money helping other people lose elections. I always thought well of David, but he’s gone in a different direction. I’m not the one to psychoanalyze that.”

A Club for Growth PAC spokesperson said of Daniels in a statement: “We expect he’ll be making these and other criticisms of conservatives on a more regular basis live on CNN from his retirement. David has had a strong record at Club for Growth PAC winning more than 70% of races, including supporting mostly conservative underdogs.

Prior to Daniels deciding not to run, national and state Republican operatives had expressed fear that his entrance into the race would have resulted in an intra-party civil war between the more moderate and Trump-aligned factions. The Club for Growth wasn’t the only one attacking Daniels. Allies to former President Donald Trump also attacked him as a RINO.

Daniels disputed that the race would’ve been hotly contested— “maybe ugly,” he said, but “not close.” He declined to criticize Banks for not disavowing the attacks on him from Trump world and the Club for Growth.

“That was for him to decide,” Daniels said. “Once again, it wasn’t a factor. We had all the advantages. And frankly, I’m told they knew that. We were allies in the past, and I’ll always think of him that way.”

Banks has said that he respects Daniels, and “learned a lot from him” during his time as a state senator, which overlapped with the former governor’s tenure. Banks quickly consolidated his support as Daniels stepped aside, with NRSC Chairman Steve Daines (R-Mont.) calling Banks one of the cycle’s “top recruits this cycle” and saying he had the “utmost respect” for Daniels’ career.

While Banks faces no challenger at the moment, Daniels allies are shopping for one. Daniels’ friend and adviser Mark Lubbers said retired Rep. Trey Hollingsworth — who could self-fund — “has the intellectual capacity to be a Reagan Republican and if he committed to that path they would eagerly support him.”

Hollingsworth did not respond to a request for comment. Banks did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Daniels declined to discuss whether he would back a presidential candidate in 2024.

“I hope a lot of flowers bloom, and there are lots of choices for the nation,” he said.

He said he was unlikely to enter the political fray again. “I just haven’t decided whether to take up a partisan role again.”

  • Keir Starmer visits Kyiv to emphasise Labour’s backing for Ukraine

Keir Starmer visits Kyiv to emphasise Labour’s backing for Ukraine

    [ad_1]

Keir Starmer has travelled to Kyiv to meet Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to emphasise Labour’s commitment to backing action to arm the country against a renewed offensive by Russia.

The Labour leader said the UK’s position on Ukraine would remain the same if there was a change of government next year, as he travelled to the suburbs of Irpin and Bucha where Russia committed significant atrocities last year as it was pushed back by Ukrainian forces.

“It’s incredible to see the evidence of atrocities that I’ve seen this morning. Photographs of civilians in the outskirts of Kyiv blindfolded, with their arms tied behind their back,” Starmer told Reuters.

He said he had travelled to Ukraine to express solidarity with the country and to emphasise the need to pursue justice and reparations against perpetrators. “There has to be justice for this. There has to be justice in The Hague and there has to be proper reparation in the rebuilding of Ukraine,” he said.

Speaking after his conversation with Zelenskiy, Starmer said it was a “constructive meeting” that had touched on the new military support Ukraine needs, as Kyiv continues to urge western leaders to give it fighter jets.

“We spoke about the need for that justice to cover both the use of Russian state assets for reconstruction and the need for there to be prosecutions for war crimes,” Starmer said.

“I was able to tell him that should there be a change of government when we have a general election here, the support for Ukraine will remain the same. It’s a very important message for me to be able to relay to the president face-to-face, and I’ve been able to do that this afternoon.”

    Starmer meets Volodymyr Zelenskiy
Starmer said he held a ‘constructive meeting’ with Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Photograph: Office of the President of Ukraine/PA

Starmer said Zelenskiy was very concerned about whether Labour would continue support through weapons and training. “I stressed that the Labour party supports and would maintain the defence, training, and technological support the current UK government is providing,” he said.

“I’ve said throughout this conflict there will be no difference between the political parties on this, so we will continue to work with the government to see what further support we can provide.”

The trip is the start of an international charm campaign for the Labour leader, during which he will visit the Munich security conference over the weekend for meetings with world leaders.

The Guardian reported last year that Starmer had approached the Zelenskiy government about the possibility of a visit as opposition leader. Starmer has previously visited the Polish border and British troops in Estonia to affirm Labour’s “unshakeable” commitment to Nato, which a Labour government helped to found.

The trip has been postponed previously, during the turmoil of the collapse of Liz Truss’s government and because of the security situation in Ukraine.

Starmer is not the first national opposition leader to visit Kyiv. Friedrich Merz, the head of Germany’s biggest opposition party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), travelled to the capital in May and was received by Zelenskiy.

Starmer is keen to portray himself to the Ukrainians as a reliable partner and strong supporter. At prime minister’s questions during Zelenskiy’s visit to London this month, he used all his time at the dispatch box to stress cross-party unity on Ukraine, rather than challenging Rishi Sunak.

He said Labour “doesn’t just hope for Ukrainian victory, we believe in it” and highlighted his time as a barrister representing victims of Serbian aggression at the international court of justice in The Hague. “We in this house have a duty to stand on the shoulders of giants and support Ukraine’s fight for freedom, liberty and victory,” Starmer said.

Visva Bharati student gets show-cause notice for backing Amartya Sen on social media

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: Visva Bharati university authorities have issued a show-cause notice to one of its students after the latter supported Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on social media over the current row where the university Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty has accused the economist of unauthorised occupation of the university land in excess of his legal entitlement.

The student, Somanath Sou, is an active member of the CPI(M)’s student wing Students’ Federation of India (SFI). Recently he made a post on social media condemning the attitude of the university authorities towards Sen in the current row.

He said in his post that this is nothing but unnecessarily harassing the globally acclaimed educationist and economist. According to him, certain elements are constantly advising the vice-chancellor that by harassing Sen he would get the support of the BJP.

According to Sou, from the land records it is clear that Sen is legally entitled to the entire land including the 13 decimals of land which the university authorities claim to be held by him beyond his legal entitlement. “The real truth must be revealed since in this process an aged and globally acclaimed educationist is being harassed unnecessarily. The university authorities should come out with papers in support of their baseless claims,” he wrote in his social media post.

Soon after that he was slapped with the show-cause asking him why disciplinary action should not be taken against him for being vocal against the university despite being a student there. In the notice Sou has been warned of strong disciplinary action if he repeats a similar action in the future.

On February 11, Sen’s advocate issued a legal notice to the university authorities asking the latter to tender a public apology for their derogatory comments in connection with the continuing row over 13 decimals of land occupied by him. “The university authorities should apologise for making such derogatory comments. Else appropriate legal action will be taken,” said Sen’s counsel Gorachand Chakroborty.

  • ‘I Feel Like We’re Backing Up, Instead of Moving Forward’

‘I Feel Like We’re Backing Up, Instead of Moving Forward’

    [ad_1]

    lede rab hearn

We have an amazing cadre of judges in South Carolina. And it’s because in order to be a judge, you don’t have to raise a war chest. You don’t have to ask for contributions from big business, from lawyers to help you do TV ads and all that. You don’t have to spend any money at all other than the gas that you put in your car to come to Columbia and get to know the members of the General Assembly. Is it a perfect system? No, it’s not perfect. I don’t think there is a perfect system. But it’s pretty darn good. And we have an amazing cadre, as I said, of hardworking, committed judges as a result. And very, very little corruption or graft, because no money is changing hands.

I remember speaking to one of my judge friends from Texas, and he told me he had to raise $2 million to get a job that paid, at that time, about $100,000. And I’m like, “Well, these people that give you money, who are they?” And he said, “Well, businesses, lawyers.” And it’s clear they expect something when they come in front of the court. We don’t have that.

Rab: Do you think having an independent judiciary and issuing opinions, as you just did, can be sort of a corrective? There’s some question as to whether the [six-week abortion ban] the legislature passed really reflects the will of the people.

Hearn: Of course, the legislature in the state and elsewhere has plenary powers, and they are the representatives of the people. I completely accept that. But our whole system was founded on a system of checks and balances. This is exactly the way the system is supposed to work. I know I can speak for all my colleagues on the court, we respect the decisions of the General Assembly. But that’s a different question as to whether or not that legislation is constitutional. And I would hope when we would make a decision — they can disagree with it, of course they can — but I would hope they would respect it. And I think that’s the disappointment that I’m seeing with our governor last night. He’s a litigant in a case in front of us that’s still pending.

Rab: What have you heard from the public? Have you heard from female attorneys about your retirement?

Hearn: Absolutely. Gotten all kinds of letters and phone calls. And I was at the South Carolina Bar Convention last week, and a lot of women and men were very … I feel the love. I feel the love.

Rab: Last year, you wrote quite a dissent in a death penalty case, arguing that the system is broken because the court has never found the punishment to be disproportionate to the crime — even in this case, when the man was unarmed.

Hearn: I do believe in the death penalty. But I believe it should be reserved for the worst of the worst. And I have voted to uphold a death penalty sentence on multiple occasions. And it was only in that case that I felt it was not proportionate to the crime. And I did take that opportunity. I do not believe the general public is aware that we have men on death row dating back to the 80s. We have over 30. So I think my opinion made it clear that if we’re going to have a death penalty, let’s have one that works. This is not working.

Because to me, that’s not fair to the victims’ families. It’s not fair to the jurors. That is the most difficult decision a juror could ever make. And they voted to sentence someone to death, and yet decades later, it hasn’t happened. It’s not even fair to the families of the defendants. So I did take that opportunity. I wanted to educate the public on what was going on, because I worry so much that the general public is so unaware of what’s happening in state government, in the courts, in the prisons.

  • Adani-Hindenburg war intensifies; Adani gets backing as UAE royals invest USD 400 million

Adani-Hindenburg war intensifies; Adani gets backing as UAE royals invest USD 400 million

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Billionaire Gautam Adani’s embattled group clutched on to a USD 400-million investment by Abu Dhabi’s International Holding Co. in its flagship firm’s share sale to restore confidence in the conglomerate that saw nearly USD 70-billion rout in value after a tiny New York short seller came out with a damning report.

Adani, 60, who was third richest man in the world till a day before Hindenburg Research came out with its report on January 24 that flagged concerns about its debt levels and alleged stock manipulation, accounting fraud and the use of tax havens, has slipped to 8th position, narrowing the gap with rival Mukesh Ambani, whom he overtook in April last year, to just USD 4 billion.

His group late on Sunday night issued a 413-page response to the Hindenburg report in an attempt to restore confidence in the business empire but it could not cut much ice and stock prices of most group companies continued to fall and key dollar bonds sank to fresh lows on Monday.

The US short seller dismissed charges that its report on Adani Group’s malfeasance was a “calculated attack” on India, saying a “fraud” cannot be obfuscated by nationalism or a bloated response that ignored key allegations.

Hindenburg released the report on January 24 — the day on which Adani Enterprise Ltd’s Rs 20,000-crore follow-on share sale opened for investors. While anchor investors poured in almost Rs 6,000 crore in the FPO on that day, the public subscription remained muted with just 3 per cent of the shares on offer being subscribed till Monday evening, according to information available on BSE.

The offer closes on January 31 and the retail investor portion — which is the biggest chunk of the FPO — is hardly 4 per cent subscribed.

IHC said it will invest about USD 400 million in Adani Enterprises’ follow-on share sale, saying it was confident in the fundamentals of the conglomerate even after the route in share value. “We see a strong potential for growth from a long-term perspective and added value to our shareholders,” its CEO Syed Basar Shueb said in a statement.

IHC is led by Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan — the UAE’s national security adviser and brother to the president.

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) also issued a separate statement saying its investments in the group are safe. “Our total holding in the Adani group companies under equity and debt on date is Rs 36,474.78 crore. This was Rs 35,917.31 crore as of December 31, 2022. Total purchase value of these equities of the group companies, bought over the past many years, is Rs 30,127 crore and the market value for the same at close of market hours on January 27, 2023 was Rs 56,142 crore.”

Punjab National Bank (PNB), which has about Rs 7,000 crore exposure in Adani Group entities, however, said it is keeping a close watch on the developing situation.

Earlier in the day, Hindenburg responded to the 413-page detailed statement issued by the Adani Group late on Sunday, saying it failed to specifically answer 62 of its 88 questions, and conflated the company’s “meteoric rise” and the wealth of Asia’s richest man “with the success of India itself”.

In the Sunday evening statement, Adani group had called Hindenburg “Madoffs of Manhattan” and that its report was “not merely an unwarranted attack on any specific company but a calculated attack on India, the independence, integrity and quality of Indian institutions, and the growth story and ambition of India.”

Standing by its report that alleged “fraud” at the second largest conglomerate in India run by the world’s then-third richest man, Hindenburg said it disagrees with Adani group’s assertion of its report being an attack on India.

“To be clear, we believe India is a vibrant democracy and an emerging superpower with an exciting future,” it said. “We also believe India’s future is being held back by the Adani Group, which has draped itself in the Indian flag while systematically looting the nation.”

A “fraud is fraud, even when it’s perpetrated by one of the wealthiest individuals in the world,” it said, adding, “Adani also claimed we have committed a ‘flagrant breach of applicable securities and foreign exchange laws’. Despite Adani’s failure to identify any such laws, this is another serious accusation that we categorically deny.”

Adani’s 413-page response only included about 30 pages focused on issues related to the report and the remainder consisted of 330 pages of court records, along with 53 pages of high-level financials, general information, and details on “irrelevant” corporate initiatives such as how it encourages female entrepreneurship and the production of safe vegetables.

On Sunday evening, Adani group said the Hindenburg report was intended to enable the US-based short seller to book gains by crashing stock prices.

The report had come just as a Rs 20,000-crore share sale at the group’s flagship company, Adani Enterprises, opened to anchor investors.

“All transactions entered into by us with entities who qualify as ‘related parties’ under Indian laws and accounting standards have been duly disclosed by us,” it had said late on Sunday. “This is rife with conflict of interest and intended only to create a false market in securities to enable Hindenburg, an admitted short seller, to book massive financial gain through wrongful means at the cost of countless investors.”

Hindenburg reiterated that it was short on the Adani group through US traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivative instruments.

In the January 24 report, it had called out the conglomerate’s “substantial debt”, which includes pledging shares for loans; that Adani’s brother Vinod “manages a vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities” that move billions into group companies without required disclosure; and that its auditor “hardly seems capable of complex audit work”.

Hindenburg, which is known for having shorted electric truck maker Nikola Corp and Twitter, said the Adani group has responded to its questions on the source of billions of dollars that have flowed from Vinod Adani-associated offshore shell entities saying it is neither aware nor required to be aware of the source of funds.

Vinod Adani is the brother of Gautam Adani.

Separately on Sunday, Adani Group CFO Jugeshinder Singh had expressed confidence in the follow-on public offer of Adani Enterprises sailing through.

He likened the behaviour of Indian investors participating in the sell-off to the colonial-era Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar.

“In Jallianwala Bagh, only one Englishman gave an order, and Indians fired on other Indians,” Singh told the Mint business daily, when asked why the market believed the Hindenburg report. “So am I surprised by the behaviour of some fellow Indians? No.”

At least 379 people were killed when Gen. Reginald Dyer on April 13, 1919, ordered about 50 Indian army soldiers to shoot at unarmed, peaceful civilian protesters.

Since Tuesday’s close last week, shares of Adani Total Gas tanked 39.57 per cent, Adani Transmission tumbled 37.95 per cent, Adani Green Energy declined 37.93 per cent, Ambuja Cements went lower by 22.28 per cent and Adani Ports fell 21.55 per cent on the BSE.

In three days, shares of ACC tanked 18.47 per cent, Adani Enterprises fell 16.38 per cent, Adani Wilmar dipped 14.25 per cent, Adani Power (14.24 per cent) and NDTV (14.22 per cent).

The group firms have collectively lost over Rs 5.56 lakh crore in market valuation between Tuesday last week and Monday.
