Maulana Azad’s erasure from NCERT books due to his Muslim identity: NCP

    [ad_1]

Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Thursday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to ‘erase’ the name of India’s first Education Minister and Bharat Ratna, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, from history because he was a Muslim.

NCP national spokesperson Clyde Crasto said that the BJP-led government at the Centre is using the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) to wipe out Maulana Azad’s identity and his glorious contributions from India’s education system.

Citing instances, he said a para in the first chapter of the old Class XI NCERT political science textbook said: “The Constituent Assembly had eight major Committees on different subjects. Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad or Ambedkar chaired these Committees.”

“However, in the new version of the same textbook by NCERT, the name of Maulana Azad has been omitted and the same sentence now reads: ‘Usually, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajendra Prasad, Sardar Patel or B.R. Ambedkar chaired these committees’. This is truly unfortunate,” Crasto said.

Suspecting a systematic conspiracy to delete Maulana Azad from history, the NCP leader pointed out how last year the Minority Affairs Ministry had abruptly discontinued the ‘Maulana Azad Fellowship’, which was started in 2009 (by the former UPA government) to provide financial help to students from six notified minorities for a period of five years.

The NCERT comes under the Government of India which is currently led by the BJP, and therefore the question that comes to the mind is whether they are seeking to obliterate the name of India’s first Education Minister because of his religion, Crasto said.

“There appears no other reason why they would do this to the first Education Minister of Independent India and one of our leading freedom fighters. The NCERT must clarify and answer to the citizens why Maulana Azad’s name is missing in the new version of the textbook, and how it will rectify this error,” Crasto said.

Maulana Azad, a distinguished Islamic scholar, author, academician and a prominent freedom fighter, was elected as the youngest President of Indian National Congress aged 35, and later led the historic Khilafat Movement.

After Independence, Maulana Azad served as India’s first Education Minister for over 10 years, during which he laid the foundations for the country’s massive academic network. Acknowledging his contributions, his birthday – November 11 – is celebrated as National Education Day.

  • Azad’s Book Out, Read the Revelations

    [ad_1]

    by Raashid Andrabi

SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who recently launched his autobiography “Azaad”, has made explosive claims about his former party, Congress, its leadership and more. In his book, Azad provides a personal account of his political journey spanning five decades and offers insights into the evolution of India’s political landscape. The revelations in Azad’s autobiography have stirred up a storm in political circles; with many wondering about the impact they will have on Congress and Indian politics. The book is sure to cause ripples in the Congress party, which is already struggling to remain relevant in Indian politics.

The Launch of “Azaad: An Autobiography”

Ghulam Nabi Azad’s book “Azaad: An Autobiography” was launched on April 5 in New Delhi in the presence of several prominent political leaders drawn from various parties. The book offers a personal account of Azad’s political journey spanning five decades, tracing the remarkable evolution of India’s political landscape. The book launch was attended by former Union Minister Dr Karan Singh, who released the book.

In a tweet, Azad said, “With candid reflections on my life and career alongside some of India’s and the world’s most influential leaders, ‘Azaad’ captures the essence of the great Indian story. I hope my readers will enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it”.

    Dealing with Mufti’s Backdoor Entry

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has spoken about the behind-the-scenes events leading up to the formation of the state government in 2002. Azad claimed that he had offered the opportunity for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to join the government, believing that it would make the government more stable. However, he alleges that PDP leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had other plans.

After initially agreeing to join the government, Mufti suddenly demanded to be made the Chief Minister, causing a rift between the parties. Ultimately, despite having the support of 42 MLAs, Azad was forced to return to national politics, while Mufti became the Chief Minister. Azad’s revelations have shed new light on the contentious events that unfolded in Jammu and Kashmir nearly 20 years ago.

Azad has claimed in his autobiography that late Mufti Muhammad Sayeed misused his generosity to become the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir in 2002. Azad said that he offered Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to be part of the government when he had a letter of support from 42 MLAs to become CM. In the book, Azad reveals that he trusted Mufti and did not spot his deviousness. He also mentioned that Mufti confirmed his participation in his government when he and Dr Manmohan Singh, the then leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, met him in Srinagar. Azad claims that Mufti wanted to hijack the government and become the chief minister of the state.

PDP calls Azad’s book “blatant lies” and “cock and bull story”

‘Azaad’ reveals an alleged attempt by former J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed to hijack the government during the 2002 PDP-Congress government formation.

But the PDP has dismissed Azad’s claims as “blatant lies” and accused him of trying to engineer defection and split Muslim votes. Senior PDP leader Naeem Akhtar also accused Azad of conspiring with the Governor, leading to unrest in 2008, and distorting facts to appease PM Modi. The PDP’s response has been critical, questioning Azad’s credibility and legacy in J&K, The Hindu Reported.

Akhtar’s sharp reaction came after reading the book excerpts produced in the newspapers, which he said looked like “to appease Modi and distort the facts about Kashmir.” He also accused Azad of taking dictation from somewhere else and said that he was performing duty in J&K, perhaps to retain his bungalow in Delhi and secure a Rajya Sabha seat.

    Azad’s Revelations on Rahul Gandhi

In an interview with the media, Azad claimed that Rahul Gandhi is the primary reason why he and many others are not in the Congress today. He asserted that one has to be “spineless” to remain in the grand old party. Azad claimed that it is not in the hands of Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi or even Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to ensure his return in the party fold even if they wanted.

He asserted, “It was too late” for him to do so even if Rahul Gandhi sought his return. The veteran leader, who has since floated the Democratic Progressive Azad Party, said no one is “untouchable” in politics today and he could go with any party to form a Government as he did not rule out going with the BJP, to be a part of a Government in Jammu and Kashmir if both win once elections are held there.

Azad also noted that had Rahul Gandhi not torn the ordinance brought out by the UPA Government in 2013, he would not have been disqualified today and described the then Union Cabinet as “weak” by not going ahead despite Gandhi tearing the ordinance.

    Azad’s Views on Congress Leadership

Ghulam Nabi Azad is not mincing his words when it comes to his criticism of the current Congress leadership. In a recent interview, he slammed them for “running the show on Twitter” and claimed to be “24-Carat Congress” compared to their “18 Carat”. He also lamented the party’s tendency to project incapable leaders and the prevalence of sycophancy within the party.

Azad also had some advice for party leaders facing probe agencies, suggesting they should not be forced to appear and instead cited former prime ministers who voluntarily went along with their leaders when facing inquiries. Despite his loyalty to the party, Azad questioned whether the Congress truly wants people like him, or just those who are fast on Twitter and make grandiose claims.

Azad’s Scathing Criticism of Senior Party Leaders

Ghulam Nabi Azad has also taken a swipe at senior party leaders Jairam Ramesh and Salman Khurshid in his autobiography, “Azaad”.

Azad criticizes senior Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Salman Khurshid in his autobiography “Azaad”. He accuses Ramesh of not protesting against the repeal of Article 370, while he takes issue with Khurshid’s comments calling “Rebels with Cause” traitors. Azad also bemoans the downfall of the Congress party, blaming the leadership’s inability to recognize potential leaders and the prevalence of sycophancy within the party.

  • Mufti misused my generosity to become CM in 2002: Azad’s revelation in his autobiography

    [ad_1]

Srinagar, Apr 06: Former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has claimed that late. Mufti Muhammad Sayeed misused his “generosity” to become chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir in 2002.

As per news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), in his book, Azad, An Autobiography, the former CM said that he offered Mufti Muhammad Sayeed to be part of the government when he (Azad) had a letter of support from 42 MLAs to become CM. “With the letter of support of 42 MLAs in my hand, I telephoned the governor, and he invited me the following day to discuss the date of oath-taking. I informed Sonia ji about the developments over telephone. She was happy to hear that I was now taking charge of government formation,” Azad claims.

“A few hours before the meeting with the governor, around 8.00 a.m., I was in the balcony of my room of Hotel Broadway in Srinagar, having tea with Ashok Bhan, a friend, Congressman and lawyer of the Supreme Court, when a thought occurred to me. Perhaps it was driven by emotion. I told Bhan that I should ask Mufti’s party to join the government. I had a long family association with him, which I had maintained even after his split with the Congress. Though I did not need his backing to form the government, I believed that with him on board, the government would be even more stable and could perform better. Besides, he had been a Congressman, and his MLAs could be co-opted in the government,” the former CM claims.’

Azad further says Mufti made him wait, saying he needs 3-4 days to think over the proposal. “I telephoned Mufti and informed him that I would be meeting the governor at 11.00 a.m. I suggested that his party could be part of the government and asked him to give me names of five–six MLAs of his party who could be accommodated as ministers. He said that it was a good idea and immediately invited me for breakfast, saying that I could go to the Raj Bhavan after having breakfast with him; I readily agreed. I had breakfast with him at his residence and repeated my offer. He heard me out and said that he wanted three–four days to think it over. He suggested that I better defer my meeting with the governor until then,” Azad says.

The former CM claims that he trusted Mufti and didn’t spot his deviousness.“I should have seen through his game plan then and gone ahead with the oath-taking; after all, his party could have joined the government later. But I trusted him implicitly and did not spot his deviousness. How was I to know that he would throw our personal relations to the wind and misuse my generosity! I met the governor and briefed him about my talks with Mufti that morning, also informing him that I would get back to him after three–four days,” the former CM writes.

He said Mufti confirmed his participation in his government when he and Dr. Manmohan Singh, the then leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, met him in Srinagar. “I returned to Delhi and narrated the whole story to Sonia ji. It was decided that Dr Manmohan Singh, then the LoP in the Rajya Sabha, and I would fly to Srinagar and meet the PDP leader to firm up his party’s inclusion in the government. The following day, Dr Singh and I went to Srinagar and had lunch with Mufti, during which he confirmed his party’s participation in the government,” he adds.

According to Azad, Mufti got up in an agitated state during the meeting called by Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi for announcing the alliance when he was asked to give names of 5-6 names from his party who could be accommodated as ministers.

“Thereafter, Sonia ji invited Mufti to Delhi for the final announcement of the alliance. I, too, was present at the meeting. Mufti thanked the Congress president and me for agreeing to his party’s participation in the government. But when he was asked for names from his party who could be part of my government, he suddenly got up in an agitated state and exclaimed, ‘I thought that I had been invited to be the chief minister!’ Sonia ji and I were aghast and said that no such indication or assurance had been given from our side at any point of time. Mufti nearly shouted back that he had been called to Delhi to be insulted. ‘Why was I called? I could have been informed over the telephone.’ It was clear that he wanted to hijack the government,” Azad says.

He writes that he himself intervened and requested Sonia Gandhi that a power-sharing arrangement could be worked by which he would be CM for the first three years and Mufti for the next three years.

“When matters seemed to be going out of hand, I intervened and requested Sonia ji that an arrangement could be worked out by which I would be CM for the first three years and Mufti could take over for the next three years (then the J&K government’s term was of six years). This way, everyone would be happy. However, Mufti, having got a toehold, now wanted full entry through the door. He insisted on being the CM for the first three years. Sonia ji was in no mood to relent. Again, I requested her that in the larger interest of the state, we should agree to his demand. That is how Mufti, whose party had come third in the elections, with just 16MLAs, became the CM, while I, despite having the support of 42 MLAs, had to return to national politics,” he says.

In 2002 elections, National Conference won 28 seats, Congress 20 seats and Peoples Democratic Party 16 seats—(KNO)
