  • BJP awaits PM’s visit to Kerala for major fillip in its outreach to minorities

BJP awaits PM’s visit to Kerala for major fillip in its outreach to minorities

    [ad_1]

Kottayam: The BJP in Kerala is looking forward to the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state next week in hopes that it would give an impetus to its campaign aimed at bringing minorities into its fold.

The reason behind the expectation, according to BJP state president K Surendran, is the “flow” of people, especially from minority communities, to join the party.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Surendran said the BJP will begin a massive campaign to bring religious minorities into its embrace with Modi’s visit.

    MS Education Academy

He said the Prime Minister’s trip to Kerala would be a turning point for the party as even before his arrival, people have started flocking to join it.

The BJP leader said around 80 persons from prominent families belonging to minority communities joined the BJP in Kottayam district today.

More are expected to join the saffron party from Pathanamthitta district in the coming days, he added.

“Kottayam was the beginning. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Kerala, there will be a huge influx to the BJP from the religious minorities,” he said at the reception held here for the new members who joined the party.

He also said the party has prepared a list of persons whom it wants to invite as members and these are people who are concerned about Kerala’s future.

Earlier in the day, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs John Barla met Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church at his residence.

After the meeting, Barla said in a Facebook post that it was “positive interaction”, where many national issues related to the Christian community were discussed along with the mission and vision of PM Modi.

During the day, he also met with Archbishop Kuriakose Mar Severios at the Knanaya Jacobite Archdiocese at Chingavanam and visited the St Kuriakos Elias Chavara pilgrim centre at Mannanam here.

Meanwhile, Surendran also said rubber rates will see some changes soon.

Recently, a senior Bishop — Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany — of the influential Syro-Malabar Catholic Church had said that if the Centre promised to increase the price of rubber procurement to Rs 300 per kilogram, BJP’s dearth of an MP from the southern state would be addressed.

His statement had created ripples in the political waters of the state.

On Tuesday, Surendran said the central government will take a stand favourable for rubber farmers and alleged that it was the state government which was lying to them.

He urged the ruling Left front to implement what it had said in the poll manifesto regarding rubber pricing and to indicate its stand on the issue of hiking the rubber price to Rs 300 per kg.

Lone MAGA supporter awaits Trump in New York, fears antifa

    [ad_1]

Some conservatives have warned each other not to protest Trump’s indictment, citing a conspiracy theory that January 6 was orchestrated by Democrats.

Gulzar was the only MAGA protester outside the Fifth Avenue skyscraper for most of Saturday. Trump has said he’ll spend Monday night in his Trump Tower penthouse before surrendering to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Tuesday morning on charges related to a 2016 hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Later Saturday, when the rain made way to a warm spring afternoon, a Bronx Republican exchanged barbs with a Southern Democrat on Fifth Avenue in front Trump Tower.

“I’m going to stand out here Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday,” said Mario Laboy, 78, of the Bronx. “If you look at the facts you’ll see it’s a political persecution against Trump, but this will just make him stronger,” he said, waiving a Trump 2024 flag and chanting, “I supported Donald J. Trump.”

A tourist from Tennessee shouted at the retired septuagenarian, calling him “fucking crazy.”

“Where do I start, who in the world supports Donald Trump?” said Lucy Wright, 56, a divorce attorney from Chattanooga, who said she was seriously contemplating extending her vacation in New York so she could take part in anti-Trump protests on Tuesday.

“I would be perfectly fine to be thrown in jail for assault, just to grab his [Trump’s] balls once, if he can grab our pussies, I would grab his balls,” she said referring to the infamous remark Trump made in 2005 that was released during the presidential election in 2016.

The scattered pockets of political tension outside the building were small manifestations of larger discussions online surrounding the former president’s imminent arrest.

Trump predicted “death and destruction” if he were to face criminal charges in a post on Truth Social.

Rep. Greene took up the call after a Manhattan grand jury voted Thursday to indict Trump.

“New York put your MAGA hats on. Under our constitutional rights, we WILL support President Trump and protest the tyrants,” said Greene in a tweet Friday. “I’ll see you on Tuesday.”

Threats of violence and protest filled conservative websites as well. On the far-right chat site patriots.win, once TheDonald.win — a site which lawmakers said played a significant role in organizing January 6 — users called for a “nationwide strike” and for “all patriots” to “bring society to a halt.”

The indictment of Donald Trump was the top section in the chat site on Saturday, with users saying they planned to arrive in New York Tuesday.

The NYPD is preparing for potential unrest, by potentially blocking off the streets around the lower Manhattan courthouse and removing all cars in the case of a bomb threat, a law enforcement officer told POLITICO last week. The former president plans to arrive via motorcade, that officer said.

  • Taiwan’s president is coming to America. Political bickering awaits.

Taiwan’s president is coming to America. Political bickering awaits.

    [ad_1]

    taiwan us china 88376

Tsai is stopping in the U.S. on both ends of a Latin America trip. She’ll be in New York for one day Thursday to receive a leadership award from a conservative think tank and will meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles on April 5.

It’s Tsai’s seventh such trip to the United States since she became president in 2016, but this one comes as tensions between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated over the spy balloon that recently transited the U.S. and China’s support for Russia in its war against Ukraine.

Her visit is making even starker the growing divide between lawmakers who argue for protecting Taiwan at all costs, and an administration that is trying to rein in China without completely derailing a relationship that is already at its frostiest level in decades.

Beijing is calling the visit an affront to U.S.-China relations and a provocation. “The trip is not so much a ‘transit,’… but the U.S. egregiously conniving at and supporting ‘Taiwan independence separatists,’” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday. The spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, Zhu Fenglian, added that Beijing will “take measures to resolutely counter” any meeting between Tsai and McCarthy.

Asked Wednesday about McCarthy’s plan to meet with Tsai, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “We leave it to Speaker McCarthy to talk to his schedule, his agenda and what he intends to do or not do, particularly in relation to this transit.” Taipei is cooperating by not releasing any details of Tsai’s U.S. schedule.

McCarthy is one of a band of lawmakers who argue the Biden administration isn’t doing enough to show its support for Taiwan. And they’re demanding that the U.S. provide whatever military and diplomatic support necessary to prevent Beijing from attempting to annex the island. Over the past two years, they’ve drafted legislation proposing everything from establishing formal U.S. diplomatic relations with Taiwan to lending U.S. military equipment to Taipei in the event of “preemptive aggression” by China.

The Biden administration “isn’t being strong enough in its support of Taiwan,” said Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.). “Prioritizing U.S.-Taiwan arms sales and training programs today is a prerequisite to deter a PRC attack on Taiwan in the near future.”

That sentiment is bipartisan. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), ranking member of the House Select Committee on China, said the administration needs to expand and strengthen U.S. defense and economic ties with Taiwan, and deliver long-promised weaponry.

The upcoming meeting between McCarthy and Tsai is a prime example of the dynamics. McCarthy had originally announced a plan to visit Taiwan, prompting Beijing to warn that such a trip “could undermine China-U.S. relations or peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” It was a clear reminder that China responded to then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August with days of live-fire aerial and naval drills around the island.

McCarthy responded by saying “I don’t think China can tell me where I can go.” The Biden administration refrained from weighing in. “I’m not aware that the Speaker’s office has announced any planned travel. … They are going to make their own decisions,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in January.

It’s not clear what prompted McCarthy to compromise with the California meeting (and his office didn’t respond to a request for comment). But the White House is clearly worried that Beijing might respond to Tsai’s presence in the U.S. with another surge of threatening military activity around Taiwan. Beijing “should not use this transit as a pretext to step up any aggressive activity around the Taiwan Strait,” Kirby at the National Security Council said on Wednesday. The White House has had “multiple diplomatic discussions with Beijing” about Tsai’s visit to avoid that from happening, Kirby said.

Those discussions haven’t calmed Beijing’s bluster. Tsai’s visit “could lead to another serious, serious, serious confrontation in the China-U.S. relationship,” the chargés d’affaires in the Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., Xu Xueyuan, told reporters on Wednesday. ”Those who play with fire will perish by it,” Xu warned.

Lawmakers do have lapsed promises from the Biden administration to point to in their arguments for more action on Taiwan. Deliveries to Taiwan of billions of dollars in U.S. arms are backlogged due to supply chain issues related to the pandemic and exacerbated by the Ukraine conflict.

“We are already within the window of maximum danger and we need all hands on deck to deter Xi Jinping’s malign designs on Taiwan,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.), chair of the House Select Committee on China, stressing the need to get weapons to Taiwan quickly.

The White House didn’t respond to requests to comment for this story. But Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said last week that a task force launched in September to untangle snarls in weaponry supply chains is making progress.

Another argument from the lawmakers: Biden’s messaging on Taiwan is confusing to the point where it may be increasing the risk that China invades Taiwan.

Four times since August 2021 Biden has stated that the U.S. would deploy U.S. military forces to defend Taiwan in case of a Chinese invasion attempt. And in every case, aides have walked back comments that appear to reverse the longtime policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding U.S. willingness to defend Taiwan. That has “managed both to provoke the Chinese and to leave Taiwan without any assurance of American support, a dangerous scenario,” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

A transition to an explicit U.S. policy of guaranteed military support for Taiwan to fend off a Chinese attack — what Cotton calls “strategic clarity” — has backers in Taiwan. “Dictators are prone to misjudge situations because they are biased,” said independent Taiwan legislator Freddy Lim. International support for Taiwan “must be clearer for China to understand at a glance,” Lim said.

Other Taiwanese observers have less charitable views of congressional interest in Taiwan. In the U.S. “Taiwan is already a political football,” said Andrew Nien-Dzu Yang, a former Taiwan defense minister and adjunct assistant professor at National Sun Yat-sen University. The intense U.S. focus on the island reflects how “Taiwan is a bargaining chip for the United States,” Yang said.

Saudi Arabia: Hyderabad woman rescued in Nov awaits repatriation

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A Hyderabad woman named Sakina Fatima was rescued in November after being tortured by her employer in Hafar Al Batin, Saudi Arabia. Since then, she is staying in the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia and waiting for repatriation.

The Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) party which had raised her case earlier too has requested External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to speed up the repatriation process.

Recused after Hyderabad woman’s brother wrote letter

Last year in November, Sakina’s brother Syed Zaker Hussain wrote a letter to the Minister for External Affairs, appealing for her rescue. In the letter, he explained that Sakina, who was in search of a job to look after her family after the death of her husband, was approached by a local agent and offered a job as a housemaid in Dubai. The agent promised a three-month visit visa and said that if she liked the job, her visa would be extended to two years. However, after three months, she wanted to return to Hyderabad as she was not paid any salary.

Instead of sending her back, Sakina was sold to an Arab family in Saudi Arabia and forced to work for 18 hours daily. Even after her mother passed away, she was not sent back to India. After learning of her situation, concerned authorities rescued her and moved her to the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia.

    Awaiting repatriation

Since November, Sakina is staying in the embassy and awaiting repatriation. MBT has requested the External Affairs Minister to intervene and expedite her repatriation process.

The case highlights the plight of many workers from India who are lured to the Gulf countries with false promises and end up trapped in exploitative work situations.

  • Life imprisonment for army captain involved in Amshipura ‘staged’ encounter; sentence awaits confirmation

    [ad_1]

New Delhi, Mar 5: Completing general court-martial proceedings in less than a year, an Army court has recommended life imprisonment for a captain in connection with the killing of three men in a “staged” encounter in Amshipura in south Kashmir in July 2020, officials said here on Sunday.

Captain Bhoopendra Singh was subjected to court martial after a Court of Inquiry and Summary of Evidence found that troops had “exceeded” powers vested under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), they said.

The life sentence is subject to confirmation by higher army authorities, the officials said.

Declining to comment, the army sources said the process involved in such matters is still on.

The three men hailing from Rajouri district of Jammu region – Imtiyaz Ahmed, Abrar Ahmed and Mohammed Ibrar – were killed in a remote hilly village in Shopian district on July 18, 2020 and labelled as “militants”.

However, as doubts were raised on social media over the killings, the Army promptly constituted a Court of Inquiry which found prima facie evidence that the troops had “exceeded” powers vested under AFSPA.

The Court of Inquiry was followed by the Summary of Evidence, which was completed in the last week of December 2020.

The Army had issued a statement saying “the process of recording the Summary of Evidence has been completed.

“The same is being examined by the authorities concerned in consultation with legal advisors for proceeding further.” “The Indian Army is committed to the ethical conduct of operations,” it had said.

The officials said the court martial proceedings were then initiated against Captain Singh for violating the powers vested under the AFSPA and for not following the dos and don’ts of the Army as approved by the Supreme Court.

The Army had also called Mohammed Yusuf, the father of Abrar Ahmed, from Rajouri for deposing in the court martial proceedings during which he was asked to provide a missing report about his son.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police had also constituted a Special Investigation Team which filed a charge sheet against three people, including Captain Singh, for “staging a fake encounter”.

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had visited the families in Rajouri in 2020 and conveyed to them Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that the government stood with the aggrieved families and they would be taken care of with all support from the government.

The identity of the three youths was subsequently confirmed through a DNA test. The bodies were handed over to their families in Baramulla in October 2020 and buried in their native village in Rajouri.

Yusuf told PTI from Rajouri that after the killing of his son, the family was in shambles.

“The compensation of Rs 5 lakh handed over by the government has been consumed in fighting the case.

“Now his child is also growing and the promise of the government to provide a job to one of the family members is still pending,” Yusuf said.

The SIT charge sheet alleged that Captain Singh provided wrong information to his superiors and the police about the recovery made during the staged encounter.

The other two named by the police in its charge sheet are Tabish Nazir and Bilal Ahmed Lone, both civilians.

“By staging the encounter,” the three accused “have purposefully destroyed evidence or real crime that they have committed and also have (been) purposefully projecting false information as part of a criminal conspiracy hatched between them with the motive to grab” cash rewards, it said.

The army had, however, denied that its captain staged the encounter for a cash reward, saying there was no such system for its personnel for any acts in combat situations or otherwise in the line of duty.–(PTI)
