    SRINAGAR: The authorities on Wednesday issued avalanche warming to six districts of Jammu and Kashmir amid inclement weather conditions.

    Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Authority in a comminique said avalanche with low danger level is likely to occur above 3000 to 3500 metres above sea level in Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Ramban and Baramulla districts.

    The communique also reads that avalanche with medium danger level is likely to occur above 2800 metres in Ganderbal district in the next 24 hours.

    “People living in these areas are advised to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas till further orders,” it reads. (KNO)

    The DMA, said that a ‘low’ danger level avalanche is likely to occur 2800 to 3500 metres above sea level over Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri and Ganderbal districts.

    People living in these areas have been in the meantime advised to take precautions and avoid venturing in the avalanche prone areas till further orders. (GNS)

    Srinagar: Six people were rescued on Sunday from near the Zojila Pass in Kargil district after an avalanche hit the area, officials said.

    Officials said that an avalanche hit an area near the Zojila Pass, trapping five vehicles in which 6 people were travelling.

    “A massive rescue was immediately organised. All the six people have been safely rescued. There is no casualty in this incident,” an official said.

    SRINAGAR:  At least six people had a miraculous escape after the vehicles they were travelling in came under a massive avalanche near Zojila in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir on Sunday.

    Quoting officials, GNS reported that the avalanche hit the area late in the afternoon, trapping five vehicles with two persons boarding one of them and one person each in others. Immediately a massive rescue operation was launched, they said.

    Confirming it, Deputy Commissioner Kargil said that all six occupants in five vehicles have been rescued.

    “Thankfully, there is no casualty reported,” he added.

    Sonmarg, Apr 16: At least five vehicles on way to Kargil from Sonamarg came under a snow avalanche on Sunday afternoon near ‘Sahiatan Nallah’ Gumri.

    Shaitan Nallah Gumri area falls between Zojila and Drass. The vehicles mostly trucks that came under the snow avalanche were laden with eatables and other goods and were on way to Kargil.

    SSP Kargil Inayitullah Chowdary told news agency Kashmir News Trust that all the people present in the vehicles were rescued and the operation is on to retrieve the trapped vehicles.

    He said at least five vehicles were hit by the avalanche. [KNT]

    EAM Jaishankar expresses grief over loss of lives in Sikkim avalanche

    New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim.

    Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar said, “The news of deaths and injuries due to catastrophic avalanche in Sikkim is deeply distressing. Condolences to the bereaved families. Wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

    Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Sikkim.

    Shah took to Twitter to condole the loss of lives and assured that the teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will reach the affected area soon.

    The minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident.

    “My sincerest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim. We are closely monitoring the situation and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Shah said in a tweet.

    At least seven tourists were killed and many are feared trapped after an avalanche struck the Gangtok-Nathu La road in Sikkim on Tuesday afternoon, the Army said.

    The deceased have been identified as Shiva Psd Lamichaney, Ashika Dhakal, Rebya Singh, Bal Singh, Sourav Roy Chaudhary, Pritam Matiy and Muna Shah Shrestra, officials said.

    “Among the 7 deceased we have identified three as Nepal nationals, and two each were from Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The Bengal victims will be taken in an ambulance, 2 from Uttar Pradesh will be flown while those from Nepal will be taken by road for which the State Social Welfare department is looking into the logistics of taking mortal remains,” Gangtok District Collector said.

    An estimated 20-30 tourists were feared to be trapped under the snow along with five-six vehicles, the Army added.

    “By 3 pm, 14 persons were rescued and taken to a nearby Army medical facility. However, seven persons succumbed. The other seven persons were administered first aid and returned to Gangtok, the Army said in a statement.

    The search and rescue operation was halted on Tuesday at 6:00 pm due to inclement weather, the DC notice stated.

    Further, the search and rescue operation for the avalanche will again start at 8:00 hours on April 5, 2023, to account for missing tourists, the statement reads.

    SRINAGAR: On Tuesday, due to an avalanche near Zojila Pass in Ganderbal district of central Kashmir, the Srinagar-Leh highway had to be closed for traffic.

    As per an official statement, following recent snowfall in the area, avalanches struck near Panimatha and Kai-Pathri on Zojila Pass. The official added that efforts are underway to clear the road with the help of men and machinery.

    In light of the snowfall and avalanches in several locations on Zojila axis, upward traffic was not permitted on the day in question, the official confirmed .(KNO)

  • JCB Operator Killed As Avalanche Strike Sinthan Top

    SRINAGAR: A JCB operator, engaged with clearance of snow over Sinthan Top, a popular mountain pass located between Breng Valley in Kokernag in Anantnag district and Kishtwar district of Chenab Valley, died after he came under an avalanche on Tuesday, official sources said.

    They said that a number of JCBs were engaged to clear snow in the area and suddenly an avalanche occurred, sweeping them away. While a few, working as operators, managed their way out, a few were swept away. Immediately a massive rescue operation was launched under supervision of Tehsidar Larnoo along with SHO Larnoo.

    So far the body of one JCB operator has been recovered while searches are underway for possible missing person(s), they said.

    An officer of the administration said that initial reports suggest that two persons among those engaged for snow clearance were missing but exact details are still being verified. “Rescue operation is still underway and we are trying to locate any missing person.”

    Meanwhile, the officer identified the deceased JCB operator as Javid Ahmad Zagoo (35) son of Abdul Aziz Zagoo of Larnoo. (GNS)
