Prez Murmu attends platinum jubilee celebration of Gauhati HC

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday attended the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Gauhati High Court here. On the occasion, she launched a mobile app ‘Bhoroxa’ made for the safety of women and elderly people.

Women in need of assistance can use this app, which features women-related programmes and a number of helplines throughout the state. The 181 helpline number for women seeking assistance is one of the key features of the app. This helpline will make sure that women in need may contact the authorities and request assistance right away.

Addressing the gathering, Murmu said: “Gauhati High Court holds a unique place in India’s judicial landscape. After its inception in 1948, it had jurisdiction over seven states for more than six decades and still has jurisdiction over four states. It has established a distinct identity for itself by producing a number of legal luminaries. It has also received attention for delivering several landmark decisions.”

    MS Education Academy

She expressed confidence that the Gauhati High Court would continue to serve the people in the same manner in the years to come.

Murmu said: “The northeastern region is possibly the best example of how various communities have lived together historically. As a result, it has rich ethnic and linguistic diversity. In such a region, institutions need to have a great deal of sensitivity and responsibility, as divergent traditions and laws govern the lives of the people of the region. The legislations applicable to different areas may vary, but the entire area is administered by a common High Court.”

She further said that it is heartening to see that the Gauhati High Court continues to uphold the customary laws that have been in practice in some of the states under its jurisdiction.

By respecting the sentiments of the indigenous people, this institution has helped enhance the ethos of peaceful coexistence in this region.

The President said: “Justice is hindered by many factors. Cost of justice is one of them. We need to keep expanding the reach of free legal counselling.”

She said that the language of justice is another hindrance but there is praiseworthy progress in that direction and the higher judiciary has started making verdicts available in more and more regional languages.

Murmu asserted that the increasing role of technology in the administration of justice has been solving many problems that had affected the system for long.

She urged lawyers and students of law to find technological solutions in the legal domain that can provide a helping hand to the poor and the needy.

  • LG Sinha Attends International Day Of Forests, Calls For Judicious Use Of Resources

LG Sinha Attends International Day Of Forests, Calls For Judicious Use Of Resources

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha attended the International Day of Forests event organized by Department of Forest, Ecology & Environment at Convention Centre, on Tuesday.

The Lt Governor called upon the people for sustainable management of forests and the judicious use of resources to combat climate change and to ensure well-being of all.

“Healthy forest is key to healthy living of people and it should be our top most priority to safeguard these precious natural resources. Every element produced by nature nourishes us. Since time immemorial, the health & well-being of humans, animals & environment around us are interlinked”, said the Lt Governor.

The Lt Governor emphasized on striking a perfect balance between society and environment for a healthy ecosystem and a strong economy.

“Nature is a great source of wisdom. The more we learn from nature, the more we understand that forests are not only an integral part of our existence but also essential for our mental, physical health and well-being. A society that is closer to nature is more prosperous”, the Lt Governor said.

On this International Day of Forests, let us rededicate ourselves to protect nature and conserve forests with the spirit of “One World, One Health”. We must protect and nurture economic, social and environmental values for the benefit of present and future generations, the Lt Governor observed.

The Lt Governor directed the J&K Rural Livelihoods Mission to launch Van Sakhi Yojana in coordination with Forest Department for the socio-economic empowerment of the women entrepreneurs associated with the sector.

The Lt Governor asked the Forests Department and other stakeholders to ensure that policy on ‘Sustainable Utilization of Non-timber Forest Produce in J&K’ is fully operationalized on ground to maximize its benefits to the people, especially women and tribal communities.

The Lt Governor further emphasized on promoting high-value forest produce like Gucci mushroom and Artemisia herbal plant which can be found in abundance in the forests of Jammu Kashmir to bring significant improvement in the quality of life of the forest-dependent population without harming the forests.

He also highlighted the efforts made in the last two years for the protection of natural resources and extending economic benefits, livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities to tribal families.

“Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a large population of our tribal families dependent on the forests have been granted their forest rights for which they have been waiting for years,” he said.

The Lt Governor asked the Tribal Affairs Department and the districts administration to work in mission mode for granting individual rights under the Forest Rights Act and establishment of Van Dhan Kendras.

He complimented the Forest Department and allied wings for achieving higher targets under “One Beat Guard, One Village” programme under the campaign “Har Gaon Hariyali” and for their forest conservation awareness efforts.

With more than 55% green cover, Jammu Kashmir is ahead of many other states and UTs, the Lt Governor said.

The Lt Governor also gave valuable suggestions for sustainable management of forests.

The Lt Governor said the world population is dependent on forests in one way or the other. From our ancient texts to the latest and greatest invention of Artificial Intelligence Tool, you can find one thing in common i.e the entire universe is made of the five elements (Panch Tatva), he observed.

We must move ahead with the mantra of Panch Karma – the five major goals for the next one year. Non-Timber Forest Produce scheme must encourage associated Self-help Groups and communities to work on conservation of forests and plantation, said the Lt Governor.

Forest-related education in schools and participation of students in plantation drives must be ensured. Van Dhan Kendras and Self-help Groups should be involved in branding and marketing of forest-friendly products, he noted.

The Lt Governor said the inclusion of Panchayati Raj Institutions in Van Se Jal and Jal Se Jeevan program will make a greater impact in our campaign for conservation of natural resources. Further, we have to make the re-forestation campaign a mass movement, he added.

On the occasion, the Lt Governor presented the UT-Level Awards of Forestry & Wildlife Conservation to the frontline staff of Forest and Wildlife Department for their outstanding contribution.

He also felicitated the Village Panchayats for their efforts in the greening of common village lands.Kashmir(KNO)

  • Arundhati Roy attends CPI(ML) Liberation function in Patna

Arundhati Roy attends CPI(ML) Liberation function in Patna

    [ad_1]

Patna: Booker Prize winning author and social activist Arundhati Roy Friday launched a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and stressed on the need for forging an “anti-Fascist” grouping of opposition parties.

Roy was in the Bihar capital for addressing a convention organized by the CPI(ML) Liberation, which is a part of the multi-party ‘Mahagathbandhan’ but supports the Nitish Kumar government in the state from outside.

“The country is run by four people. Two of them happen to be buyers and the rest two are sellers. All of them belong to Gujarat”, said the writer evoking applause from the crowds.

She was obviously referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani.

She said “Modi ji thinks that he need not speak about Adani, since the common people should remain ever thankful to him for five kilograms of ration. But the Hindenburg report speaks about a scam involving 100 billion dollars. It is the biggest corporate scam in the country”.

Referring to the alleged proximity of the business tycoon with the prime minister, she said “Earlier, Modi ji used to travel by Adani’s aircraft. Now, Adani travels with Modi ji in the latter’s plane.

“The farm laws had been brought to benefit Adani and his ilk, which is evident from the fact that his warehouses had come up across the country,” Roy said.

“No raids were ever conducted on properties owned by Adani. But BBC is paying the price for bringing to the fore the truth behind the Gujarat riots of 2002”, she quipped and questioned the “silence of US and UK” over the Income Tax department’s action against the international broadcaster.

Lavishing praise on CPI(ML) Liberation for taking a “stand against Fascism”, she said it was essential to bring together all forces opposed to the “current capitalistic system, wherein five per cent people control 60 per cent of the nation’s wealth”.

“It is good that different political groups opposed to the current ruling dispensation are making an effort to come together. Hopefully, the energy of public movements will also be harnessed”, said the celebrated author, who won the Booker for her debut novel “The God of Small Things” and has been actively associated with a number of human rights movements.

The three-day CPI(ML) Liberation party Congress, which was inaugurated on Thursday, will conclude on Saturday.

The invitees on that day include Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his deputy Tejashwi Yadav and Jharkhand counterpart Hemant Soren.
