Hyderabad: GHMC sensitises school students on safety against dog attacks

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials on Saturday briefed school students on preventive measures to be taken up to safeguard themselves against dog bites or dog attacks.

Awareness drives were held in schools in Moosapet, Gajularamaram and Serilingampally, among others in the GHMC limits.

Officials also distributed pamphlets to the students on measures to be adopted to prevent street dog attacks.

The corporation has taken up the initiative in view to curb the soaring cases of stray dog attacks in the city.

Several incidents of dog attacks were reported in the city and the neighbouring districts after the horrific video of a five-year-old Pradeep being mauled to death by a bunch of stray dogs circulated social media, on February 21.

Officials of the Telangana government called on for justice and stressed measures to be taken to prevent such attacks on innocent children.

Citizens held that GHMC’s negligence in curbing the stray dog menace was the reason behind the dog attacks.

MLA’s son attacks Sonu Nigam during concert: Fans outraged as video surfaces

  • Over 1.6 mn cyber attacks blocked on Indian insurance firms a day in Jan

Over 1.6 mn cyber attacks blocked on Indian insurance firms a day in Jan

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Over 1.6 million cyber attacks were blocked on Indian insurance companies every day in January, a report showed on Monday.

A total of 49,844,877 cyber-attacks were recorded on 114 insurance sector websites.

On average, insurance sector applications face 430,000 attacks each, which is close to the overall average of 450,000 attacks per app across all industries, according to the report by Indusface, an application security SaaS Company funded by TCGF II (Tata Capital).

The report also discovered that 51 per cent of the Indian insurance websites were attacked with DDoS requests which is much higher than the overall average of 30 per cent sites being attacked by DDoS requests.

Apart from the DDoS request attacks, the other key concern for the insurance sector in India is the rise of Bot attacks.

Over 6 million such bot attacks were documented in January.

“The rise of bot attacks on the insurance industry is concerning as these tend to be more sophisticated and surgical. The potential risks that Indian insurers face range from unauthorised access to financial data and other sensitive information, or even the internal systems of the insurance company itself,” said Ashish Tandon, Founder and CEO, Indusface.

The bot attacks mounted by hackers are of three major types — account takeover, card cracking and scraping.

Hackers usually use bot attacks to take over financial accounts and conduct credit card fraud via cracking and scraping.

Apart from the large volumes of sensitive and lucrative information such as credit card details, banking information and personal data of customers, the other key factor driving attacks on Indian insurance companies is the rise of vulnerabilities.

“Most of the insurance companies are on the path to digital transformation in order to cater to digitally savvy consumers. This has increased the number of applications, and the attack surface as well,” said the report.

“It is time to adopt a holistic solution like the AppTrana WAAP, that bundles VAPT, WAF, API Security, DDoS & Bot Mitigation and secure CDN in one platform,” said Tandon.

Syria urges UN to deter Israeli attacks after deadly missile strike

    [ad_1]

Damascus: Syria has urged the United Nations to take necessary measures to deter Israel’s attacks and hold it accountable after a deadly Israeli missile attack on the Syrian capital Damascus.

“When Syria was trying to heal its wounds, bury its martyrs, and receive condolences, sympathy, and international humanitarian support in the face of the devastating earthquake, the Israelis launched an air aggression targeting civilian-populated neighbourhoods,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

There has been no comment from the Israeli authorities on the attack, Xinhua news agency reported.

Five people, including a soldier, were killed and 15 others wounded by the Israeli missiles launched from the Golan Heights early Sunday, the Syrian army said, adding many of the wounded are in critical conditions.

Many residential buildings in Damascus and the city’s countryside were damaged, it noted.

At least 15 people were killed, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor. Nine of the victims were Syrians, including two civilians, four soldiers, and three military officers. The identities of the other victims remain unknown, the Britain-based watchdog group said.

According to local media reports, the missiles hit the upscale neighbourhood of Kafar Sousah, the historic citadel of Damascus, and the al-Mazraa area.

The observatory said the target in Kafar Sousah was an Iranian school, adding that the Israeli missile attack also targeted positions of the Iranian militia and the Lebanese Hezbollah group in the Sayyida Zainab area, as well as a military site in the southern Syrian province of Sweida.

The Israeli attack comes as Syria is still coping with the devastating earthquakes that struck the north of the country on February 6. The tremors have killed and injured thousands of people in the war-torn country.

Christians protest against ‘attacks on churches’ in Delhi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Members of the Christian community staged a protest at Jantar Mantar here on Sunday against alleged “attacks on churches, violence and arrests” in different parts of the country.

“We are being accused of forcibly converting people to Christianity. Churches are being attacked, our people are being beaten up and arrested. The community members are living in a constant state of panic,” Steven from Uttar Pradesh said.

He claimed that the country saw “525 cases of atrocities against the members of the community in 2021 and 600 cases in 2022”.

“In Uttar Pradesh, the number of such cases increased from 70 in 2020 to 183 in 2022,” he claimed.

Shivpal from Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh alleged that the state police has been arresting people over allegations of forced conversions.

“We are not even allowed to pray in our houses. A few women were arrested for offering prayers during a birthday celebration,” he said.

One of the FIRs filed against the members of the community names an 11-year-old and a person who died in 2010, Steven alleged.

“Churches are being attacked and our community members harassed in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and many other states. Cases are being filed against them on the basis of false charges.

We have come here to express solidarity with our brothers and sisters,” Poonam, who came from Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh, said.

Telangana: Peddapalli Bar Association roars against attacks on lawyers

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Claiming increasing attacks on advocates in Telangana, the representatives of the Manthani Peddapalli Bar Association have appealed to Bar Associations across the state to observe February 17 as a ‘Block Day’ every year.

The move denotes their protest against the Telangana government’s leisure and ignorance towards crimes allied with the lawyer’s fraternity.

They have urged the state government to bring the ‘Advocate Protection Act’ immediately while asking bar associations across the state not to withstand the state ignoring their threats.

“All learned brothers are well aware that the brutal attacks on our brother Advocates who fight for the cause of justice. Nowadays, it has become common that threatening Advocates, attack them and even kill them,” read their appeal.

Remarking on an incident from February 2021, where a High Court lawyer Gattu Vaman Rao and his wife Nagmani were waylaid and stabbed to death by a group of assailants in daylight in the Manthani area, the official held that the charges against the culprits have not been framed to date.

“The family members of the deceased lawyers are still continuing their fight with a demand of further detailed enquiry to bring real culprits into light, who are the masterminds and behind the murder incident,” plighted the officials in their letter.

UP: Mother-daughter self-immolate in anti-encroachment drive; Oppn attacks BJP govt

    [ad_1]

Kanpur: A day after a mother-daughter duo died allegedly due to self-immolation during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat, police on Tuesday booked 39 people including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials and over a dozen cops on murder and other charges.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Maitha) Gyaneshwar Prasad has also been placed under suspension, said Inspector General of Police (Kanpur Range) Prashant Kumar.

Lekhpal Ashok Singh and bulldozer driver Deepak have been arrested so far, Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) BBGTS Murthy said.

The FIR has been registered on charges of murder, attempt to murder apart from mischief by killing or maiming cattle, mischief by fire with intent to destroy house, etc and intentional insult, Kumar told PTI over the phone.

He added that the bulldozer which was used in the demolition of the victims’ house has been seized.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak spoke to the bereaved family members, who were refusing to hand over the bodies for post-mortem, and assured them that their demands will be looked into. The bodies were later handed over for autopsy.

Heavy police deployment has been made in and around the village as tension prevailed after the deaths.

The family and the villagers were earlier demanding that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should speak to them. They also sought ex-gratia of Rs 5 crore and a government job to at least two members of the bereaved family, according to the IGP Kumar.

While talking to the victim’s sons Shivam and Ansh, Deputy CM Pathak said, “This is a very tragic and saddening incident… An FIR has been registered on murder charges against the accused. Strict action will be initiated and the guilty will be punished. Their generations will remember it.”

“You are all like my family members. I and the entire government are with you.” Pathak said adding that their demands will be looked into.

IG Kumar said stern action will be taken against the erring cops including station house officer (Rural) Dinesh Gautam who is likely to be placed under suspension very soon.

Besides Gautam, the SDM of Maitha, JCB driver Deepak, lekhpal (revenue officer) of Madauli Ashok Singh, three unnamed lekhpals, an unnamed kanungo (revenue official), and 12-15 police personnel have been booked.

A case of murder and attempt to murder has also been lodged against more than a dozen unnamed people, said sources.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the ruling BJP over the incident. In a tweet in Hindi, he said, “When the arrogance of power takes away the people’s right to live, it is called dictatorship.”

“This ‘bulldozer policy’ has become the face of the cruelty of this government. India does not accept this,” the former Congress chief said.

The opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) blamed the “insensitive” administration for the “murders” and hit out at the government for stopping a Samajwadi Party delegation from going to the village to express condolences to the victims’ family.

Due to tension prevailing in the village, they were stopped, a senior officer said.

The 11-member delegation included MLAs Manoj Pandey, Amitabh Bajpai, Vinod Chaturvedi, Pradeep Yadav and Mohd Hasan alias Rumi.

The video of the deputy chief minister speaking to the bereaved family was tweeted by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, who alleged that the words of sympathy were only for a show.

“The BJP has cut off the part where the victims were putting forth their demands. This is the worst form of the BJP’s insensitivity,” Yadav said in a tweet in which victims’ family members were seen asking the Deputy CM for immediate arrest of SDM and others.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the victims’ family should get justice and strict action should be taken against the culprits.

“…the heart-rending incident of Kanpur is condemnable. We all have to raise our voice against this inhumane action. The victims’ family should get justice and strict action should be taken against the culprits,” Vadra said in a tweet in Hindi.

Pramila Dixit (45) and her daughter Neha (20) allegedly set themselves afire in a hut in the presence of police, district administration and revenue officials, who had gone to Madauli village in the Rura area of the district to remove encroachments from a “gram samaj” land, a police official said.

Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) BBGTS Murthy told reporters that Vishal Dixit had filed a complaint against Shivam Dixit, son of Pramila Dixit, alleging encroachment of ‘gram samaj’ land following which district administration team headed by SDM Gyaneshwar Prasad had gone there to remove the encroachment.

The encroachment was being removed by a bulldozer when the mother-daughter died after they immolated themselves, the SP added.

Additional Director General of Police (Kanpur zone) Alok Singh, along with Divisional Commissioner Raj Shekhar, also visited the village.

Geopolitical links: In addition, Trickbot was linked by IBM last year to cyberattacks in 2022 tied to the war aimed at both the Ukrainian government and private sector groups and, according to the Treasury Department, have also allegedly targeted the U.S. government and U.S. companies.

“The United States and the U.K. are leaders in the global fight against cybercrime and are committed to using all available tools to defend against cyber threats,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement Thursday. “As Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine continues, cooperation with our allies and partners is more critical than ever to protect our national security.”

British attacks: The U.K.’s National Crime Agency identified almost 150 British victims of ransomware linked to Russian cybercriminal groups. And the action taken Thursday is part of an effort to shut down ransomware attacks aimed at the U.K., which are classified there as a “tier 1 national security threat.”

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement Thursday that “by sanctioning these cyber criminals, we are sending a clear signal to them and others involved in ransomware that they will be held to account.”

Past disruption efforts: The hackers associated with Trickbot have continued their activities despite Microsoft taking action in 2020 ahead of the U.S. presidential election to disrupt the group through actions including suspending IP addresses. Whether the new sanctions will be able to permanently damage the group remains unclear.

“These sanctions will likely cause disruption to the adversary’s operations while they look for ways to circumvent the sanctions,” Adam Meyers, head of threat intelligence at cybersecurity group CrowdStrike, said in a statement Thursday. “Often, when cybercriminal groups are disrupted, they will go dark for a time only to rebrand under a new name.”

  • Sarah Huckabee Sanders attacks ‘left-wing culture war’ in SOTU response

Sarah Huckabee Sanders attacks ‘left-wing culture war’ in SOTU response

    [ad_1]

    image

In one of her first acts as governor, Sanders garnered national attention for a directive banning the term Latinx across the Arkansas government. In her Tuesday response, Sanders similarly waded into culture war subjects that have animated conservatives in the Biden years, inveighing against “false idols” of the left and other conservative punching bags.

“That’s not normal. It’s crazy, and it’s wrong,” she said.

Huckabee also hit the president for his stewardship of the economy and the Biden administration’s handling of immigration policy.

Those broadsides are not far apart from the depiction of Biden and his fellow Democrats presented by her previous boss, former President Donald Trump, underscoring the lasting impression he has made on the Republican party — albeit with the former president’s sharpest edges shaved off.

Trump, the only major declared Republican candidate for the White House, released his own short response to Biden’s speech in which he painted a bleak picture of the country and accused the president of allowing illegal immigrants to “storm” the country and letting drug cartels smuggle drugs across the border.

Trump also highlighted inflation, the rise in murder rates, and said the Biden administration is “trying to indoctrinate and mutilate our children” — a reference to sexual orientation and gender identity issues that have animated the party.

By contrast, Sanders echoed those same themes, without the same level of rancor and in a way that Republicans have at times sought for in hopes of modulating the former president’s agenda into an enduring coalition. At the outset of her remarks, she referenced her thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as her mother’s experience with a different form of cancer, before swiftly pivoting into a condemnation of Biden.

“The dividing line in America is no longer between right or left; the choice is between normal or crazy,” she said.

Sanders also teased the forthcoming release of an education plan for Arkansas that she said would — if enacted — raise teachers’ salaries, expand parental choice and improve childhood literacy.

Sanders’ speech stands in contrast to the tone left by her predecessor, Republican Asa Hutchinson, a regular presence on Washington Sunday shows who in the past has condemned some of Trump’s rhetoric, his most controversial policies while and members of the former governor’s fellow lawmakers in Arkansas.

Hutchinson has at times flirted with a presidential run as a conservative alternative to Trump, while Sanders has tamped down speculation that she is angling for a higher position.

“I look forward to serving as governor of Arkansas for a full eight years if the people of Arkansas will give me that privilege and that opportunity,” she said this week on “Fox News Sunday.”

Meridith McGraw contributed to this report.
