BJP, RSS attacking democracy, spreading hatred & violence: Rahul Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Bhalki: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday accused the ruling BJP and RSS of attacking democracy and spreading hatred and violence in the country.

He also appealed to the people to support the Congress and ensure that the party wins at least 150 seats in the May 10 Assembly polls in Karnataka, and comes to power with a full majority.

“Bidar is Basavanna’s (12th century social reformer) ‘karma bhoomi’. If someone first spoke about democracy and showed the path towards democracy it was Basavanna. It is sad that today across the country, people from RSS and BJP are attacking democracy,” Gandhi said.

    MS Education Academy

Addressing a public meeting here, he alleged that BJP and RSS are attacking Basavanna’s ideals of- equal partnership, equal opportunities, and that everyone should move ahead together.

“They are spreading hatred and violence in Hindustan, and they are taking away money from poor and weaker section people and giving it to two or three rich people,” he added.

AICC General Secretaries K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala (in-charge of Karnataka), KPCC working president and candidate from Bhalki Assembly seat Eshwar Khandre were among those present.

Expressing confidence about the Congress coming to power, Gandhi said the party government’s first cabinet meeting will take a decision on implementing its poll guarantees.

The Congress party has announced four poll ‘guarantees’ — 200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), 10 kg of rice free to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), and Rs 3,000 every month for graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years (YuvaNidhi), on coming to power in the state.

He said the Congress will not make false promises like Prime Minister Narendra Modi did regarding depositing Rs 15 lakh in every bank account, and war against black money, among others, and will fulfill its promises immediately after coming to power.

“Whoever becomes the Chief Minister of Karnataka, will convert guarantees into law, on the first day after coming to power,” he added.

    trump 07026

“I don’t think it has any merit,” Barr said of the case. “I think it is transparently an abuse of prosecutorial power to accomplish a political end. I think it is an unjust case. That’s not say that every legal challenge that the president faces is unjustified. But this one especially is.”

Barr said other possible cases against Trump could have legitimacy, especially one concerning classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

“He’s dug himself a hole on the documents,” Barr said in stating he thinks Trump could be indicted in that case, which is being investigated by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

“I think he was jerking the government around,” Barr told host Jonathan Karl about Trump’s handling of classified documents after his presidency.

Either way, Barr said he expects Trump’s legal woes will drag out throughout the 2024 election season, to Trump’s advantage during the primaries as Republicans rally around him — but disadvantage in the general election.

“He’s already a weak candidate, I think, that would lose, but I think this sort-of assures it,” Barr said.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a former federal prosecutor and potential 2024 GOP candidate, said he agreed that Trump will not be helped in the general election by his legal troubles.

“No matter what he says and his people say, being indicted is not good for a political candidate,” Christie said later on “This Week.”

Barr served as attorney general under Trump in 2019-2020 after having done so under President George H.W. Bush from 1991 to 1993. During his tenure in the Trump administration, he criticized Trump for his tendency to tweet about active criminal cases.

“I think it’s time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases,” he said in February 2020.

Musk attacking us as he is stressed about AI safety: OpenAI CEO

    [ad_1]

San Francisco: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has hit back at Twitter CEO Elon Musk for criticising his for-profit company which is now owned by Microsoft.

During the ‘On With Kara Swisher’ podcast, Altman said OpenAI is “independent” from Microsoft.

Altman said Musk has been critical of OpenAI on Twitter.

“Elon Musk is obviously attacking us,” he noted.

“To say a positive thing about Elon, I think he really does care about a good future with artificial general intelligence (AGI). I mean, he’s a jerk, whatever else you want to say about him. But he has a style that is not a style that I’d want to have for myself,” Altman was quoted as saying.

“But I think he does really care, and he is feeling very stressed about what the future’s going to look like for humanity,” the OpenAI CEO added.

Musk tried to take control of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, in early 2018 but Altman and OpenAI’s other founders rejected Musk’s proposal.

Musk later walked away from the company and reneged on a massive planned donation, according to Semafor.

Musk told Altman that he believed the “venture had fallen fatally behind Google”.

When Musk walked away, he resigned from its board in 2018 citing a conflict of interest with his work at Tesla.

According to the Semafor report, he also reneged on a promise to supply $1 billion in funding, contributing only $100 million before he walked.

In March, 2019, OpenAI announced it was creating a for-profit entity so that it could raise enough money to pay for the compute power.

Less than six months later, Microsoft infused $1 billion in OpenAI, and the rest is history.

  • BJP attacking Rahul Gandhi to hide their skeletons: Digvijaya Singh

BJP attacking Rahul Gandhi to hide their skeletons: Digvijaya Singh

    [ad_1]

Gwalior: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Sunday claimed Rahul Gandhi rightly called the “absconders” associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi “thieves” but the BJP is projecting his remarks as anti-OBC.

He claimed not a single person from Other Backward Classes (OBC) turned “absconder” after taking the country’s money.

“Absconders are those people who are associated with the BJP and (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi. Rahul Gandhi has rightly called them thieves. What crime has he committed by raising the issue of Rs 20,000 crore in Adani’s (industrialist Gautam Adani) companies,” Singh asked while talking to reporters.

After Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP after a court in Surat convicted him in a criminal defamation case over his “Modi surname” remark, BJP staged protests across the country claiming the Congress leader had insulted the OBCs.

“Tell me the name of any OBC who had run away to foreign countries by taking away the nation’s money. To hide the theft, the BJP has put forward OBCs. Not a single OBC person has turned absconder after taking the country’s money but the BJP has termed Gandhi’s statement as against OBC. They should apologise to the nation,” Singh said.

Queried on Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification as the Wayanad MP, Singh said Congress leaders are not afraid of such tactics and slammed the Union government.

The Rajya Sabha MP alleged the BJP, RSS, and PM Modi want a “Russia, China-like democracy” in India by putting Opposition leaders in jails by filing false cases against them and disqualifying them from membership (of parliament).

“This is the model of democracy of BJP, RSS and Modi,” he said.

Singh questioned the chronology of events ahead of the Surat court’s verdict on Thursday and Rahul’s disqualification as Lok Sabha MP.

“In 2019, Rahul Gandhi delivered a speech at Kolar in Karnataka, but a defamation case was filed in Surat. The moment Rahul Gandhi posed questions to Modi in parliament on February 7, the BJP team responsible for spreading falsehood became active and the case in Surat court was expedited.

“A stay on proceedings by the high court got vacated. Though I have full regard for the judiciary; a person- a judge- is posted and the hearing gets completed on February 27 and the verdict was out on March 23, and within 24 hours Rahul’s Lok Sabha membership ended,” he claimed.

Singh said the Opposition supported Congress as they understood the chronology of events and the Grand Old Party is grateful to them.

“As I heard, the judge was given a double promotion as per my information,” he claimed.

Singh questioned the source of “Rs 20,000 crore” to (businessman Gautam) Adani.

“The company’s director was from China. From which company?….It should be probed and a joint parliamentary committee should be constituted,” the Rajya Sabha MP said.

He said Congress workers will take to the streets against the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi.

“Rahul Gandhi belongs to that family which has sacrificed for the country’s freedom. The entire Nehru-Gandhi family was in jail. What was the role of RSS at that time?” Singh questioned.

Responding to a query about Rahul Gandhi’s 52 per cent attendance in Parliament, Singh claimed “Mikes are stopped in Parliament. Parts of Rahul’s speech were expunged. He is present among the people in the entire country. Tell me whether any BJP leader had walked in the country for 4,000 ks?”

He shot back at a reporter who questioned how could ageing Congress leaders contest polls, especially when the BJP has rolled out a youth policy recently.
“Did you know the age of the Prime Minister or Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan?” Singh asked.

The Congress veteran, who walked in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, also challenged the concerned reporter to match steps with him if he can and advised him not to ask such questions.

Later, Singh and other leaders of Congress staged a protest against Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification under Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Phoolbagh area.

Hurt by success of India’s democracy and institutions, some people attacking it: PM Modi

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the success of India’s democracy and its institutions is hurting some people and that is why they are attacking it, in an apparent swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his criticism of the state of democracy in the country.

When the country is full of confidence and resolve, and intellectuals of the world are optimistic about India, talk of pessimism, showing the country in poor light and hurting the morale of the country also takes place, he said at the India Today Conclave.

“When something auspicious is happening, there is a tradition to apply ‘kaala tika’, so when so many auspicious things are happening, some people have taken the responsibility to apply this ‘kaala tika’,” Modi said, without naming anyone.

His remarks come amid a political slugfest over Gandhi’s remarks during his recent visit to the UK, with the BJP accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign intervention.

Modi said India has shown the world democracy can deliver.

He said, “The success of India’s democracy and its institutions is hurting some people and that is why they are attacking it.”

Modi said he is confident that despite such attacks, the country will move forward to meet its objectives.

Targeting the Opposition, Modi said scams used to make the headlines earlier but now the “corrupt” joining hands over action against them is making news.

The world is stating that this is India’s moment and this has been made possible because of the change of promise and performance in the country, Modi said.

The prime minister said all governments worked according to their abilities and got results according, but his government wanted new results and worked on a different speed and scale.

“Today India is the fastest growing economy in the world, it is the number one in smartphone data consumers, it is the second biggest mobile manufacturer and has the third biggest startup ecosystem,” he said.

Leading economists, analysts and thinkers of the world are saying in one voice that it is India’s moment, the prime minister said.

  • Allowing Russia’s impunity in attacking Ukraine sends a message to potential aggressors: Blinken

Allowing Russia’s impunity in attacking Ukraine sends a message to potential aggressors: Blinken

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Allowing Russia to wage war against Ukraine with impunity would be a message to “would be aggressors” everywhere that they may be able to get away with it too, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday in presence of his counterparts from India, Japan and Australia.

Blinken, speaking at the Raisina Dialogue, also said the principles driving the international system are being challenged and even countries beyond Europe are working to support Ukraine knowing the severity of the challenge and its possible implications in the future.

“If we allow with impunity Russia to do what it’s doing in Ukraine, then that’s a message to would be aggressors everywhere that they may be able to get away with it too,” he said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi and Australia’s Penny Wong were also part of the session.

“The principles that underlie the entire international system that are necessary for trying to keep peace, the stability that grew out of two world wars are being challenged, being aggressed along with Ukraine,” he said.

“And part of the reason that countries way beyond Europe are also so focused on this and are working to support Ukraine and deal with the challenge is because they know it could have an effect here,” Blinken said.

Blinken’s comments came a day after he briefly met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Delhi in their first face-to-face encounter since the start of the war in Ukraine in February last year.

When asked whether Quad is an interim consultative group for the US even as the real action unfolds with its old allies and in the old world, Blinken said the grouping is an important platform to address various challenges facing the Indo-Pacific.

The Quad comprises India, the US, Japan and Australia.

“I think the very fact not only of our presence here today but our presence and engagement day-in, day-out, including through the Quad and the work that we’re doing not only during the meetings that we have but in between, is powerful evidence of the fact that, as you might say, we can run and chew gum at the same time,” he said.

“And for us the future is so much in the Indo-Pacific. Our engagement throughout the region, both through the Quad and in other ways, is as comprehensive and as deep as any time I can remember,” he said. Blinken said the four countries are very well-placed to increase in a variety of ways their collaboration on emerging technology and on innovation, and “that’s something that we’ll also do through the Quad.” The Japanese foreign minister said Quad as a whole will be coordinating all key efforts of the four countries so that we can do much better than just “one plus one plus one plus one is four”.

“But the one plus one plus one plus one could be six, seven or eight by coordinating and listening.” Hayashi said Quad is a platform for practical cooperation and it is not trying to exclude anybody.

“No, I don’t think — look, we are not apologetic,” said Jaishankar. The external affairs minister was asked to respond to the common refrain from the Quad countries that “this is not against anyone, we are not a security grouping, we are not a military grouping”. “So we do stand for something. What I would not like to be defined as is standing against something or somebody, because that diminishes me. That makes it out as though some other people are the centre of the world and I’m only there to be for them or against them,” he said.

China has been suspicious about the Quad and feels that the grouping is aimed at containing it.

Jaishankar said the Quad is offering more choices. “We do collectively offer something different,” he said.
