Hyderabad: Security at Golconda Fort’s Naya Qila attacked

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: A minor scuffle broke out in front of the Golconda Fort’s Naya Qila are in the early hours on Tuesday when a few unidentified drunk men attacked Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) the golf course security personnel who were manning the entry gate. The assailants demanded entry into the Naya Qila area, and reportedly beat up the guards, a few of which were taken to a hospital nearby for treatment.

Interestingly, additional security was posted at Naya Qila by the ASI after the Hyderabad Golf Course Association (HGA) started expansion works without permission from the authorities a day earlier. Officials said that while the ASI accepted the golf course’s request to allow expansion, the landscaping work required for it would require permission from the ASI without fail. As none was taken, the ASI intervened and got it stopped.

It may be noted that activists have from years questioned how ancient historic land of the Golconda fort was given to private organisations like the HGA.

The additional 24-hour security was posted at Naya Qila for that purpose. However, unexpectedly, the known assailants landed up at the location and demanded entry into Naya Qila. Officials from the Golconda police station have also been informed, and a formal written complaint will be given soon, said ASI officials. The cops are reportedly on the lookout for the attackers. It is unsure what their exact motive was, but it is suspected that they are anti-social elements from the surrounding areas

    Naya Qila history

The Naya Qila area is in fact believed to be about over 400 years old, and is a part of the Golconda dynasty’s (which founded Hyderabad in 1591) remaining heritage in Hyderabad. The Naya Qila area, which is now cut-off from the Golconda fort due to local encroachments, was developed into an external fortification after the first Mughal attack (during the time of Emperor Shah Jahan) on Hyderabad in 1656.

It has two huge bastions called Laila and Majnu, of which Majnu continues to be in a state of disrepair after its collapse during monsoons in 2021. The ancient historic site was one of the few places which witnessed damage during heavy rains in 2021 in the fort. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which runs the historical site, was supposed to undertake repairs, but that has not happened so far as well.

Other parts of Naya Qila which are open to the public are the Baobab tree, which is believed to be over 400 years old (it is said to have been planted there by African friars), the Mustafa Khan Masjid (which was built in 1561 and predates Hyderabad), and the Mulla Khyali Masjid, which is believed to be named after the Deccan poet Mulla Khyali.

While the Majnu Bastion’s collapse is the latest instance of the city’s heritage getting damaged, in the past the HGA had also disallowed the general public from entering the Naya Qila area. However, according the ASI, there is no such restriction and the public is free to visit the place.

The Golconda Fort and the Charminar are two monuments that fall under the jurisdiction of the ASI, which works the central government, while all the other heritage sites like the Qutb Shahi Tombs come under the purview of the Archeology Department of Telangana government. Last year, a petition A petition was also created to save Naya Qila and the Golconda fort by local Hyderabadis.

    History of Golconda Fort

The Golconda Fort’s origins are traced back to the 14th century when the Rajah of Warangal Deo Rai (under the Kakatiya Kingdom which ruled from Warangal) built a mud fort. It was taken over by the Bahmani Empire between 1358 and 1375. Later, it was developed into a full-fledged citadel by Sultan Quli who founded the Qutb Shahi kingdom in 1518 following the death of last sovereign of Bahmani Emperor Mahmud Shah.

Sultan Quli was a commander and later governor of Tilang (Telangana), under the Bahmani Empire (1347-1518), when its second capital was at Bidar. Sultan Quli, who was originally from Hamadan in Iran, rose to the level of Governor under the Bahmani Empire in early 16th century. At this point of time he was given the fort, around which he began developing a walled-city. It eventually came to be called Golconda Fort (name derived from Telugu Golla-conda, or shepherds hill).

The fort has 87 bastions, and eight gates, of which a few are not accessible to the general public as they are under the army control. It is believed to be one of the Deccan’s most impregnable forts, and had kept Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s army at bay for eight months until he succeeded and conquered Hyderabad in 1687.

Hyderabad was founded in the year 1591 by Mohd. Quli Qutb Shah, the grandson of Sultan Quli, with the Charminar being the city’s foundation. The city turned 429 years old in 2020.

MP: Kerala students attacked by staff in IGNTU; CM Vijayan condemns

    [ad_1]

Students of  Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU) hailing from Kerala were reportedly attacked by the varsity’s security staff for clicking pictures from a restricted area on the campus.

According to Maktoob Media, the incident took place on March 10 in Madhya Pradesh. The students had gone to a water tank near the main gate, which, apparently is a restricted area.

While they were descending, a security vehicle with staff reached the spot and started shouting and beating them, without any warning.

There was no signboard that said the area was restricted, said a student who spoke to Maktoob Media.

The victims – Nasheel KT, Abhishek R, Adnan, and Adil Rashif – did not expect an attack from the security side.

Following the attack, the Kerala Fraternity, a student collective on the campus has demanded action against the security personnel involved in the attack. They also urged the university administration to ensure student safety.

    CM Vijayan condemns:

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday condemned the reported assault and said the growing hostility towards individuals based on their identities should be resisted.

“Attacks on Keralite students at @IGNTU are appalling & highlight the need to resist the growing hostility towards individuals based on their identities in our country. The university must take prompt action against the culprits & ensure the safety of all the students on campus,” Vijayan tweeted from his official Twitter page.

Rajya Sabha MP and Left leader John Brittas also sought strong action with regard to the incident and wrote a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

“Premeditated attacks on Kerala students at Indira Gandhi National Tribal University highlights the need to address organised hostility against Keralite students based on their regional, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. Urgent action is needed to ensure their safety on campus,” Brittas tweeted.

  • Former Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis attacked in central Athens

Former Greek Finance Minister Varoufakis attacked in central Athens

    [ad_1]

    britain assange 88167

ATHENS — Former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis was attacked in central Athens late on Friday, suffering a broken nose, cuts and bruises.

The assault, which his party DiEM25 described as a “brazen fascist attack,” took place while Varoufakis was dining in the central Exarchia district with party members from all over Europe.

“A small group of thugs stormed the place shouting aggressively, falsely accusing him of signing off on Greece’s bailouts with the troika [the country’s bailout creditors],” DiEM25 said in a statement. “Varoufakis stood up to talk to them, but they immediately responded with violence, savagely beating him while filming the scene.”

Politicians from across the political spectrum swiftly condemned the assault in Varoufakis, the motorbike-riding, leather-jacket-wearing politician who became well-known as the country’s finance minister in 2015.

As part of the left-wing Syriza-led Greek government, Varoufakis battled the so-called troika and Europe-imposed austerity. While the Greek administration eventually capitulated and signed a bailout agreement, Varoufakis quit government and founded a cross-border far-left political movement, DiEM25.

“They were not anarchists, leftists, communists or members of any movement,” Varoufakis said in a tweet early Saturday. “Thugs for hire they were (and looked it), who clumsily invoked the lie that I sold out to the troika. We shall not let them divide us.”

The Exarchia neighborhood has a reputation for being a bastion of self-styled anarchists. Varoufakis was publicly harassed in 2015 while dining in the same district at the height of the financial crisis.

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Takis Theodorikakos said police would take all measures to identify and arrest the perpetrators of Friday’s attack. He noted that the DiEM25 leader, “at his own initiative, was not accompanied by his personal police detail” while at the restaurant.

Greece has been hit by the biggest mass demonstrations since the eurozone crisis in recent days, as Greeks have taken to the streets almost on a daily basis to protest the country’s deadliest train crash, ramping up pressure on the conservative New Democracy government ahead of coming elections. The wave of public rage follows a train collision on February 28 that killed 57 people and raised profound questions about the management of the rail system.

The train crash has also sparked deeper questions about the functioning of the Greek state and fresh anger against the political system.

“Let us please stay focused: We are mourning the 57 victims of rail privatization. We support the spontaneous youth rallies, the greatest hope that Greece can change. See you at the demonstrations,” Varoufakis tweeted, as another big rally is scheduled for Sunday.

Members of the Muslim community were attacked in two separate incidents on allegations of cow smuggling and beef consumption in Haryana and Bihar respectively.

Two Muslim youths – Saleem and Mujahid – had gone to Manpur village to buy cattle. Saleem and Mujahid sell cattle to zamindars for a living.

“Suddenly someone shouted, ‘These two are Muslims’ and we were surrounded by men with axes,” Saleem alleged.

On seeing the mob, Mujahid said that he started his motorbike but was attacked. “My bike fell to the ground. I ran away to save my life,” Mujahid alleged. Saleem however could not escape. “They tried to aim my head but I raised my hand and got cut. I also got hit on my legs,” he alleged.

According to Saleem, he heard one of them shouting, “Take him to the room and electrocute him.”

“I remember one of my attackers is the nephew of the sarpanch,” Saleem said adding, “They took away my watch and Rs 50,000.”

Later Saleem lodged an FIR at the Mundkani police station.

However, Siasat.com spoke to Mundkani police who although agreed there was an FIR lodged by Saleem but denied any such incident took place.
