  • Eric Adams attacked for subway safety approach after killing of Jordan Neely

Eric Adams attacked for subway safety approach after killing of Jordan Neely

    [ad_1]

    52870543645 f908732714 o

The killing of 30-year-old Jordan Neely on the subway earlier this week, however, put the mayor in a difficult position as progressive lawmakers led a growing chorus of outrage and launched a renewed attack on Adams’ approach to public safety.

The stakes are high. Subway crime was a driving force behind a groundswell of support for GOP candidates last year, which lifted a Republican gubernatorial candidate to within six points of winning the general election and helped the right flip several Congressional seats to take over the House. New York Republicans continue hammering Democrats on crime ahead of the upcoming congressional races that include several competitive seats. How New Yorkers ultimately view Neely’s killing and the government’s response could also alter the city’s strategy toward mental health and public safety.

On Monday, Neely was acting erratically aboard an F train when he was placed into a chokehold by a 24-year-old passenger and later died. On Wednesday, the city’s medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. Several reports have noted Neely, who did impersonations of Michael Jackson in years’ past, struggled with mental health issues.

Adams has said that the incident demonstrates why his policies have been needed all along.

“This is what highlights what I’ve been saying throughout my administration,” Adams said Thursday during an unrelated press conference, echoing comments he made the night before on national television. “People who are dealing with mental health illness should get the help they need and not live on the train. And I’m going to continue to push on that.”

Prominent progressives, however, have laced into the mayor’s response to the incident and re-upped long standing criticisms of Adams’ approach to mental health and safety.

“This is the inevitable outcome of the dangerous rhetoric of stigmatizing mental health issues, stigmatizing poverty and the continued bloated investment in the carceral system at the expense of funding access to housing, food and health,” Tiffany Cabán, a progressive New York City Council member, said in an interview.

So far, the mayor appears outnumbered by a growing cadre of elected officials who have weighed in. While Adams has characterized the incident as tragic, he has also said he will wait until Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg completes his investigation before making any assessment — a view that is not shared even by those politically aligned with the mayor.

“Racism that continues to permeate throughout our society allows for a level of dehumanization that denies Black people from being recognized as victims when subjected to acts of violence,” New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said in a statement, later adding that “the initial response by our legal system to this killing is disturbing and puts on display for the world the double standards that Black people and other people of color continue to face.”

And Maurice Mitchell, head of the national Working Families Party, noted Adams’ policies were in full effect Monday but did not stop Neely from dying.

“Even with hundreds of police in our subways, they failed to prevent this—or even apprehend the killer,” he said in a statement.

Army truck attacked in Poonch was carrying fruits for Iftar; villagers decide on no Eid

    [ad_1]

There will be no Eid-al-Fitr in Sangiote village. A pale of gloom engulfed the village after news of the Poonch terror attack reached its villagers.

“We have not celebrated Eid with any pomp and show. We just offered prayers. The people are grieved over the martyrdom of jawans, who were bringing material for our Iftar on Thursday evening,” Sangiote Sarpanch Mukhtiar Khan told PTI over the phone from his home.

Expressing solidarity with the Indian Army and the families of the jawans, he said an Iftar was scheduled in the village on Thursday evening and the jawans were ferrying vegetables, fruits and other materials in the truck from Bhimber Gali camp when they came under attack at Bhata Dhurian.

    MS Education Academy

The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

The whole village stands with the Army, Khan said.

“After Eid prayers, we are staying back at our homes and there will be no celebrations like visiting relatives, distributing sweets, wearing new clothes or taking children outside as is the practice on the first day of the festival,” he said.

Amir Khan, another villager, said after the terrorist attack they had convened a condolence meeting. “The participants were unanimous in condemning the terrorist attack and decided to restrict Eid celebrations to namaz’ only,” he said.

Saddam Hussain said a company of the Rashtriya Rifles is deployed in the village and enjoys cordial ties with the villagers. “The soldiers usually distribute fresh fruits, including watermelons, to the residents for Iftar’ and nobody had imagined such an attack on them just two days ahead of Eid,” he said.

The Bhata Dhurian forest area has for long remained a preferred infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves.

In October 2021, nine soldiers were killed in two major gunfights with terrorists within four days in the forest area during a search operation, which continued for over three weeks with no trace of terrorists.

Two Mehgalayan pastors attacked in Bihar, UCFNEI express concern

    [ad_1]

Two pastors from Meghalaya belonging to the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Church were harassed by Bajrang Dal members while they were on a congregation mission to meet evangelists close to Patna in Bihar.

The incident took place on Tuesday. The pastors – Reuben G Laloo and T Nongkhlaw – were harassed by the Hindutva organisation. They were taken to a nearby police station.

However, following the intervention of Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, the matter was brought to the attention of Bihar authorities amid the outcry.

    MS Education Academy

Sangma took his official Twitter handle and wrote, “Condemn the incident in Bihar where our elders from Presbyterian Church were manhandled by miscreants. Instructed Meg police to be in touch with Bihar police who are helping our elders, their statements are being taken to file FIR against those miscreants. @officecmbihar(sic).”

Lajja Ram Bishnoi, the Meghalayan director general of police (DIG) spoke to the superintendent of police (SP), Patna City, who said that the criminals were allegedly Bajrang Dal supporters.

“I spoke with the Patna SP who said there was an altercation between the Bajrang Dal and pastors. The right-wing workers mistreated the pastors. However, the matter is now under control,” Bishnoi stated.

United Christian Forum North East India (UCFNEI) expressed concern over the harassment.

“We express deep shock and concern. The pastors who belonged to the Presbyterian Church of India were falsely accused of converting Hindus to Christianity, while on their visit to Bihar at the invitation of the Church for post-Easter celebrations among the faithful,” a spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills SP Sylvester Nongtnger said, “Bihar Police has provided security and protection for the onward journey of pastors to Shillong, and have escorted them to the aeroplane. Legal action has been taken by Bihar Police against the miscreants.”

  • Rahul ‘mercilessly attacked’ for raising questions, says Priyanka Gandhi

Rahul ‘mercilessly attacked’ for raising questions, says Priyanka Gandhi

    [ad_1]

Wayanad: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Tuesday made a scathing attack against the Centre and charged that the whole BJP dispensation was “mercilessly attacking” her brother Rahul Gandhi, and that the Prime Minister himself found it appropriate to malign him just because he asks questions.

Addressing a mass public meeting organised by UDF workers here, she said Rahul’s future as Wayanad MP was now in the hands of the court.

She said it was a strange thing for her to know that for the time being he has been disqualified from even fighting another election for eight years.

    MS Education Academy

Stressing that it was the duty of a Parliamentarian to ask questions, to demand accountability and to raise issues, Priyanka also said it was a right enshrined in the Constitution that we are free to express ourselves, free to ask, free to debate and free to dissent.

“I find it is even stranger that the whole government, every minister, every MP and even the Prime Minister himself finds it acceptable and appropriate to malign and mercilessly attack one man just because he asks the questions they cannot respond to,” she said.

Without naming anyone, she said truth was an uncomfortable thing “especially for those who lie and those who unleash an industrial scale of propaganda” against anyone who dares to question them.

Pointing out that India was a nation built on the foundation of truth, non-violence, equality and justice, she said the satyagraha struggles during the time of freedom movement were also a fight for truth.

She questioned BJP leaders’ charge that the Congress party had taken one man’s issue to be the issue of democracy.

“It seems to be exactly the opposite. The entire government and the BJP are trying to turn democracy upside down just to protect one man. His name is Gautam Adani,” she said.

Priyanka also said that the country was at a crossroads and what had happened to her brother was just a “symptom”.

“It is a symptom how far we are on the path of dictatorship today,” she said.

Attacking Narendra Modi, she said the prime minister felt responsible for defending Adani but felt no responsibility towards the people of the country, “This government believes that it owns India, but India belongs to you, my brothers and sisters,” she said.

Describing Rahul as a “brave” and “compassionate” man, Priyanka said he was “undaunted” by the power of those who try to silence him.

She said the people of Wayanad, his home constituency, know that he is a compassionate man who is ready to hear their issues and struggles and ready to lend them a helping hand.

“He has raised your issues…he tried to resolve your problems…he has worked hard for you…he has stood by your difficult times,” she said.

She said his future as an MP was in the hands of the court but he would keep on asking questions.

“We will not stop asking questions. We will question them. We will ask for accountability. We will keep speaking the truth,” Priyanka added.

Haryana: 10 arrested after mosque attacked with lathis in Sonipat

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Police have arrested 10 people for the “unprovoked attack” after a group of armed men armed allegedly barged into a mosque in a village in Haryana’s Sonipat, attacked people offering namaz and vandalised the place.

At least six people were injured in the Sunday evening attack on the mosque in Sandal Kalan village, police said on Monday.

An additional police force was deployed after the incident but the situation is peaceful in the village now, a Sonipat police official told PTI on Monday.

    MS Education Academy

Sonipat Police Commissioner B Satheesh Balan said that information was received at night that some anti-social elements had entered the mosque. They beat up those offering prayers.

“It was an unprovoked attack. There was no previous incident reported in the village which would have caused disharmony (between communities),” he said.

Pictures of the alleged attackers carrying lathis in their hands and roaming the streets of the village had surfaced on social media.

According to the locals, some youths from the village asked people inside the mosque who were offering prayers to stop it and later vandalised the place.

Some children were also inside the mosque at the time of the incident, they claimed.

The arrested youths belong to the same village. They have been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to hurting religious sentiments, the police official said.

“Strict action as per law will be taken. Such hooliganism will not be tolerated,” Balan said.

Police said the small mosque is built by the community in the village.
