Poonch Attack: Overground Workers Under Scanner

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: In the aftermath of Poonch attack, intelligence agencies are zeroing in on some local overground workers who agencies believe acted as guides to help the militants move in the dense forests of Poonch, media reports said.

The Tribune reported, that the known overground workers from Poonch, Rajouri and Reasi districts have been taken for questioning as the intelligence agencies investigating the attack believe that the dense forests of Poonch near Bhimber Gali can not be crossed without local help.

While there were inputs regarding an attack in Jammu division, there was no specific information with the Military Intelligence or the police about the same, it reported.

Agencies are trying to figure out if the militants behind the deadly attack were already present in the area or infiltrated recently.

Meanwhile, Army has increased the vigil along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri and Poonch districts to stop the exfiltration of terrorists to Pakistan.

The role of the overground workers in providing the weaponry, including the China-made steel core or armour piercing bullets used in the ambush to the militants is also being investigated.

There have been incidents of Pakistan drones entering and dropping arms and ammunition in the Indian territory in the recent past. Even during the Dhangri attack in Rajouri on January 1 and 2, villagers had alleged local help to the two terrorists which the police had claimed to be from Pakistan.

A massive combing and search operation involving nearly a dozen RR companies, drones and dogs are underway at the site.

On Thursday, militants had attacked an army vehicle near Bhatta Durian, on Bhimber Gali-Surankote Road of border Poonch district. Five Army personnel were killed and another was seriously injured in the incident.

Poonch attack: Massive searches underway to track culprits

    [ad_1]

Poonch: Army’s Northern Commander Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi on Sunday said that necessary action is underway against the terrorists responsible for the deadly attack on an army truck in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district that left five soldiers dead.

A massive search operation to track down the terrorists is underway in Bhata Dhurian following the ambush on the army vehicle carrying fruits and other items to a border village for an Iftar that was to be hosted by the Rashtriya Rifles unit on Thursday evening, officials said.

In a tweet on its official handle, the Army’s Northern Command shared Lt Gen Dwivedi’s visit to the Command Hospital in Udhampur and his interaction with the survivor of the terror attack.

“#LtGenUpendraDwivedi #ArmyCdrNC interacted with the survivor of the 20 Apr
23 #Poonch incident at Command Hospital #Udhampur and assured that necessary
action is underway,” read the tweet accompanied by two pictures of the soldier.

The Northern Army Commander on Saturday visited the attack site at Bhata Dhurian, an area that is a preferred infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves.

Dwivedi reviewed the security in the border area and the ongoing combing operation to track down the terrorists.

The Northern Command said in a tweet that he was briefed on the actions undertaken so far and exhorted the troops to be steadfast in their resolve.

While the search operation is underway amid a high alert in the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri, the traffic on Rajouri-Poonch highway was restored on Sunday morning after remaining suspended since Thursday evening, the officials said.

They said traffic was earlier diverted to other routes to secure the highway which connects the twin border districts with Jammu.

The officials said around 14-16 people have been detained for questioning.

“Among those rounded up are two couples from Degwar in Poonch – Iqbal and his wife Mudifa and Salam Din and his wife Rashida,” an official source said, adding further investigation is on.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Sources earlier said the attack is suspected to have been carried out by a group of three to four terrorists.

The attackers possibly spent more than a year in Rajouri and Poonch and had adequate knowledge of the terrain, they added.

The Jammu and Kashmir Gaznavi Force (JKGF) is said to be active in the area and its “commander”, Rafiq Ahmed alias Rafiq Nayi, hails from the region.

Currently, three-four terrorist groups are active in the region of Rajouri and Poonch, the sources said.

Sufi body calls Poonch attack ‘conspiracy to defame India’ ahead of G20 meet

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council chairman Hazrat Syed Naseeruddin Chishti on Saturday condemned the Poonch terrorist attack and said the entire country is with the armed forces.

Such attacks are part of a “conspiracy to defame India” because a G20 meeting is scheduled to take place in Kashmir, he said.

Five Army personnel were killed and another was seriously injured on Thursday after their vehicle was attacked by unidentified terrorists and caught fire in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch. The soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

    MS Education Academy

Banned outfit People’s Anti-Fascist Front (PAFF), a proxy wing of terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed, has claimed responsibility for the attack. There are reports suggesting that it was the handiwork of banned Lashker-e-Taiba group also.

“Till date, all our brave soldiers have sacrificed their lives for the protection of Kashmir and peace in Kashmir. We will not let their martyrdom go in vain, the whole country is standing with the armed forces,” Chishti said in a statement.

Today, Kashmir has started on the path of peace and development. The Muslims there are also extending their full cooperation in establishing peace, he said.

Such nefarious terrorist attacks are part of a “conspiracy to defame India” because a G20 programme is scheduled to be held in Kashmir, he added.

India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings during its yearlong presidency of the influential group. It will host a meeting of the G20 Tourism Working Group in Srinagar in May.

Chishti also greeted people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Chandigarh: Grief and anger echoed through the villages of four soldiers from Punjab who were among the five killed in a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch, with their family members demanding that the Army give a befitting reply to the “cowardly act”.

The soldiers’ families were inconsolable as they waited for them to come home one last time.

The fifth soldier killed in the attack hailed from Odisha.

The bodies of the four soldiers from Punjab are being sent to their native places by road, according to officials.

In Moga district’s Charik village, Kulwant’s brother said on Friday that the government and the Army should give a befitting reply to the attack.

Holding Kulwant’s four-month-old son in his arms, he said his brother loved his family and had asked him to ensure timely vaccination of his son.

Kulwant, who had recently visited his family, also leaves behind a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and his wife.

Villagers said Kulwant’s father was also in the armed forces and was killed in the Kargil war when he was about two years old.

“His father was martyred in the Kargil war. The entire village is in a state of shock,” a villager said.

Former village head Bakshish Singh said the entire village is pained by the loss of their brave son but at the same time, is proud of the supreme sacrifice he has made for the country.

In Bagha village in Bathinda, Sepoy Sewak Singh’s elder sister’s tears won’t stop.

At Sepoy Harkrishan Singh’s house in Talwandi Barth village in Batala, villagers hailed his supreme sacrifice for the motherland.

Harkrishan had recently visited his family. Hours before he was killed, he spoke to his wife and two-year-old daughter on a video call, the villagers said.

Havildar Mandeep Singh belonged to Ludhiana district.

Speaking to reporters in Moga district, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore each and a government job to the kin of the four soldiers.

“We received the very sad news of five soldiers being martyred in the incident (terrorist attack), out of which four were from Punjab,” he said.

These heroes displayed the utmost dedication in defending the country’s unity and their sacrifice will inspire their fellow soldiers to perform their duties with far more devotion and commitment, he added.

During the country’s freedom struggle, Mann said, Punjabis contributed 90 per cent.

“To keep this freedom intact, our brave jawans are guarding the borders,” he said.

  • Gehlot’s veiled attack on Pilot: ‘Cong leaders should not do anything that damages party’

Gehlot’s veiled attack on Pilot: ‘Cong leaders should not do anything that damages party’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday said Congress workers and leaders should not do anything that damages the party, in remarks seen as a veiled attack on his former deputy Sachin Pilot who has been questioning the state government’s alleged inaction in “corruption” cases.

Gehlot, who arrived in Delhi on Friday afternoon, said they should work towards ensuring that the Congress government is repeated in the state.

The veteran Congress leader said he is here for personal obligations and would be meeting some friends before returning to the state on Saturday.

    MS Education Academy

“It is easy to ignite fire, but very difficult to douse it….I talk about ‘mehngai raahat’ (relief from price rise). Congress leaders and workers should work towards strengthening the party and work towards bringing its government once again in the state and how they can contribute towards it. They should not do anything which harms the party,” he told reporters at the airport here.

“I feel that if due to some remark one faces some loss, one should not worry about one’s personal loss as the party high command would compensate you. But, one should not say or do anything that should harm the party and organisation as no one will be able to compensate for the damage caused,” he said in a veiled reference to remarks made by Pilot, who sat on a fast recently seeking action on alleged corruption during the BJP’s Vasundhara Rajes previous government.

Pilot sat on a protest in Jaipur last week demanding action against those involved in corruption during the previous Raje government.

The Congress had termed it “anti-party activity”. But Pilot went ahead with his fast dharna. The Congress has so far not acted against Pilot for protesting against his own party’s government.

Gehlot said his government has brought in several new schemes and more are coming. The people of the state feel that our government will be repeated, he said.

“We have talked to 100 MLAs and everyone said that whatever was asked for (from the state government) was received and work is going on everywhere in the state,” he said.

Asked about surveys being conducted by the party ahead of the assembly elections later this year, he said many such exercises will be held to assess the work of MLAs.

On former Congress president Rahul Gandhi vacating his official bungalow after being disqualified as MP, Gehlot said, “Whenever there is a conspiracy, the conspirator completes the entire conspiracy. The moment the case was filed, they decided what to do. The case was earlier not heard for four years, but suddenly everything was expedited as part of a conspiracy. It was a conspiracy.”

He said neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Home Minister Amit Shah knows about the Gandhi family which has made sacrifices for the nation.

“The entire Congress family and workers want them to continue to provide leadership to the party,” the chief minister noted.

Gehlot expressed concern over the issue of unemployment and price rise in the country, saying, “We want to address that, as it is affecting people. We are also providing jobs in the government and non-government sectors in Rajasthan.”

“We have launched a number of schemes for the welfare of people and we are now launching ‘Mehngai raahat camps’ that will provide some help,” he noted, adding that these camps will function in villages across the state.

He said a scheme to provide gas cylinders at Rs 500 was launched on April 1 and people are getting cheaper cylinders. “We will provide benefits to all, be it of the Congress or the BJP.”
