  • Poonch Attack Was Not Possible Without Local Support: DGP

    [ad_1]

Says ‘Hidden OGWs’ Providing Any Sort Of Support To Militant Activities Are Being Identified

    M S Naki

Jammu, April 28 (GNS): Director General of Police Dilbag Singh on Friday said April 21 attack on army in which five soldiers were killed and another was injured at Bhata Durian area in Poonch was not possible without some local support.

“The militants were provided shelter at one place and then provided transport to carry out the attack at another place,” the top police officer told reporters in Rajouri after reviewing security situation in the area.

He said that a number of militants who had managed to sneak inside were gunned down and that few of infiltrated militants are still active in the area for which police alongwith other security force are intensifying their operations to track them down.

With regard to militant module that was recently busted in the District, the DGP said they were providing support to militants besides were collecting drone dropped arms and ammunition and cash for them.

“Hidden OGWs and accomplices providing any sort of support to militant activities are being identified and stringent action against each and every individual involved in anti national activities shall be taken,” he said, adding, “We are identifying the natural hideouts as the (militants) are taking shelter mostly in forests areas in these natural hideouts.”

About the local support, he said that a local Nisar Ahmed, a resident of Gursai village, was already in the suspect list of police. “He has been an active OGW of militants since 1990. He was questioned several times in the past. This time, after corroborating the evidence, he was found involved in providing logistic and other support to militants who carried out the Poonch attack,” the DGP said, adding, “Nisar’s family is also involved in providing support to (militants). He said with the arrest of Nisar, the investigation has got a new direction and vital leads have been obtained so far.

He said that Pakistan and its agencies are supplying arms and ammunition through drone to carry out militant activities. “We have data of all involved and strict action would be taken against them.” Earlier Singh visited the Border areas of Rajouri district and reviewed security scenario of the area.

Accompanied by ADGP Jammu Mukesh Singh DGP was received by DIG Rajouri-Poonch Range Dr. Mohd Haseeb Mughal and SSP Rajouri Amritpal Singh. SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli and CO IR 2nd BN Randeep Kumar were also present.

While interacting with the jurisdictional officers, he directed for strengthening of the security grid by activating Naka checking points on different routes to track the movements of militants and their supporters, according to a police statement issued to GNS later.

He also stressed for devising and executing a proper Area Domination Plan. “He emphasized on utilizing modern technology and human intelligence to monitor the suspected movement on borders and as also in the hinterland to prevent anti-national activities and incidents thereof.”

Poonch Attack Carried Out With Active Local Support; IED Used To Blow Army Vehicle: Dilbagh Singh

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Jammu and Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbagh Singh Friday said that the April 21 attack in Bhata Durian area of Poonch in which five soldiers were killed was carried out with active local support and militants had used steel-coated armour-piercing bullets and IEDs to target army vehicle to inflict maximum damage.

He said intense search to track the natural hide-outs used by militants is being launched and initial investigations suggest that nine to 12 foreign militants may be active in Rajouri-Poonch area, who may have infiltrated recently.

Talking to reporters after taking stock of the ongoing search operations in Darhal area of Rajouri district, DGP Singh said that the Poonch attack was carried out with active support of locals.

“Such attacks can’t be carried out without local support. The militants were provided shelter at one place and then provided transport to carry out the attack at another place. They had done proper recee of the area and despite rain they succeeded to target the army vehicle that was plying with almost zero speed due to blind turn,” the DGP said, adding that “the attackers knew the spot and speed of the vehicle.”

The DGP said that the terrorist used steel-coated armour-piercing bullets and IEDs to blow the army vehicle in a bid to inflict maximum damage. “Same bullets were used in the Dhangri, Rajouri attack. The Poonch attack was carried out near a forest area. Initial investigations suggest that the terrorists may have used natural hideouts. We are identifying the natural hide-outs that may have been used by the attackers before the attack and intense search operation is on to nab the attackers,” he said.

Replying to a query, he said that the group of terrorists involved in the recent attack may be divided into two and their number seems to be between nine to twelve.

About the local support, he said that the local Nisar Ahmed, a resident of Gursai village, was already in the suspect list of police. “He has been an active OGW of terrorists since 1990. He was questioned several times in the past. This time, after corroborating the evidence, he was found involved in providing logistic and other support to terrorists who carried out the Poonch attack,” the DGP said, adding that Nisar’s family is also involved in providing support to terrorists.

On whether terrorists had got weapons through drones, the DGP said that weapons, grenades and cash was air-dropped by drone and the same was collected by Nisar and his family members.

“We are identifying the spot where the drone had dropped the weapons and cash,” he said. He said so far, 200 people were questioned and 12 suspects have been detained. He said with the arrest of Nisar, the investigation has got a direction and vital leads have been received so far. (KNO)

KYIV — Russia launched 23 missiles at Ukraine’s sleeping cities and towns in the early hours of Friday, killing multiple civilians, including a toddler.

It was the first massive Russian barrage in weeks.

Ukraine’s Air Defense Forces reported shooting down 21 cruise missiles launched by Russian jets from the Caspian Sea.

But one Russian missile hit a nine-story residential building in Uman, a town in central Ukraine famous for its vibrant Jewish culture, destroying a large section of it. On Friday morning, 10 people were found dead and 17 others were taken to hospital, Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine’s interior minister, said in a statement. Rescuers are still working at the scene.

In Dnipro, Russia’s forces destroyed a house, killing a 31-year-old woman and a 2-year-old toddler. Three others were wounded.

“Missile strikes killing innocent Ukrainians in their sleep, including a 2-year-old child, is Russia’s response to all peace initiatives,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a statement. “The way to peace is to kick Russia out of Ukraine. The way to peace is to arm Ukraine with F-16s and protect children from Russian terror.”

  • BJP, Cong attack Odisha govt over missing keys of Puri Jagannath temple Ratna Bhandar’

BJP, Cong attack Odisha govt over missing keys of Puri Jagannath temple Ratna Bhandar’

    [ad_1]

Bhubaneswar: The BJP and the Congress on Thursday separately demanded that the Biju Janata Dal government in Odisha open the Ratna Bhandar’ of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, and make public the report of a judicial commission formed to probe into the issue of missing keys of the 12th-century shrine’s treasury.

The demands were raised two days after the Orissa High Court asked the state government to file its response by July 10 on a petition praying for making public the report of Justice Raghubir Das Commission of Inquiry on the missing Ratna Bhandar keys.

“The judicial panel submitted its report to the state government in November 2018, about five years ago. The government has not taken any action on it and kept it in cold storage,” BJP spokesperson Pitamber Acharya said.

    MS Education Academy

If the government believes in transparency, the judicial commission report should be made public without further delay, senior Congress leader Bijay Patnaik said.

The ruling BJD in a statement said the Ratna Bhandar was not opened for 38 years since 1985 and the opposition should refrain from indulging in politics in the name of Lord Jagannath.

The Ratna Bhandar, located in the basement of the temple, has two parts. The outer chamber of the Ratna Bhandar stores ornaments used by the deities on a daily basis, while many pieces of jewellery are kept in the inner chamber of the treasury.

While the keys to the outer chamber are available, the keys to the inner chamber are missing.

Acharya said the people have serious doubts about the assertion made by the government for the last five years that it has a duplicate key.

An attempt was made to open the inner chamber of Ratna Bhandar’ in April 2018 following a directive of the Orissa High Court, but it was not successful as keys were not found at that time. A team, comprising ASI officials, priests and others, then carried out an inspection from outside.

However, a few days after the inspection, the government said a duplicate key of the inner chamber has been found.

“The state government must give a clarification on the issue of missing keys and how a duplicate was found,” he said.

The BJP leader also sought to know why the government is reluctant to open the Ratna Bhandar if it has a duplicate key.

Acharya also wondered why the state government is not opening the inner chamber even after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in an affidavit to the court mentioned that there is a threat to Ratna Bhandar and urgent repair work is required.

He claimed that people across the country suspect that the valuables of the Ratna Bhandar have been looted.

“It is the responsibility of the state government to make the Commission of Inquiry report public,” Congress leader Bijay Patnaik said.

The BJD government is not maintaining its own policy of maintaining transparency, he said.

“I had seen huge quantities of gold, diamond and ornaments wrapped in clothes and kept in wooden boxes,” former temple administrator Rabindra Narayan Mishra, who was part of a team that inspected the inner chamber in 1978, said.

All the precious items have been listed and weighed properly during the last inspection, he said, adding that the valuation of the asset could not be ascertained as goldsmiths from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were not able to calculate the actual value of the ornaments at that time.

In 1985 when the Ratna Bhandar was opened again, no fresh inventory was made.

Mishra supported the demand for a fresh inventory of the ornaments stored in the Ratna Bhandar and allow the ASI to inspect its condition.

In 2021, then law minister Pratap Jena informed the assembly that according to the 1978 inventory, the Ratna Bhandar had 12,831 bharis’ of gold and 22,153 bharis’ of silver (one bhari is equal to 11.66 grams).

The treasury also had 12,831 grams of gold ornaments with precious stones and other valuables, he had said.

As much as 22,153 grams of silver with expensive stones, silver utensils and other valuables were found there, Jena had mentioned, adding that due to various reasons, 14 gold and silver items could not be weighed during the inventory process.

Poonch terror attack: Man who consumed poison after being called for police questioning dies

    [ad_1]

Poonch: A 50-year-old man who allegedly consumed poison on being called by police for questioning in connection with last week’s terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch died on Thursday, sparking protests by agitated locals, an official said.

Mukhtar Hussain Shah, a resident of Nar village in the district’s Mendhar tehsil, was disturbed as he was facing some domestic issues, he said, adding that he was not summoned as a suspect.

However, in a video message which went viral after his death, Shah alleged harassment. He also called for stern action against the real culprits behind the attack and a united fight against terrorism.

    MS Education Academy

Shah allegedly consumed poison on Tuesday evening and was admitted to the Government Medical College, Rajouri, where he died on Thursday morning, the official said.

Shah took the extreme step within hours of being asked to report for questioning in connection with the April 20 ambush by terrorists in the Bhata Dhurian forest that left five soldiers dead, he said.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

“He was not a suspect (in the terror attack case) but was called for questioning like most of the residents of his village that is located near the ambush site. We came to know he was facing domestic issues and was disturbed,” the official said.

Soon after Shah’s body reached near his house, his relatives and neighbours blocked the Jammu-Poonch national highway between Bhimber Gali and Bhata Dhurian to press for an inquiry into the circumstances leading to his death.

The protesters also raised slogans against the police and are being persuaded to disperse, the official said.

“I have no pressure from the Army, police or villagers. I am ending my life, even though it is wrong as per my religion. My family and I are being harassed and despite speaking the truth, nobody is listening to me,” Shah said in his nearly 10-minute video message.

Swearing by Allah and the holy book that he did not help the terrorists in carrying out the attack, he said 200 to 500 innocent villagers are facing harassment and torture for no fault of theirs.

“I am sad that my brothers from Rashtriya Rifles got martyred and I express my solidarity with their families. Humanity demands that no innocent’s blood should be shed and my family and villagers will protect our country and cooperate with (security) officers,” he said.

Shah said his family always supported India but the “same family is getting tortured. My request to the (security) officers is not to oppress innocents and if anyone is involved, let there be stern action against them”.

He said people are facing harassment because of someone else’s mistake. “I want to appeal to all Muslims that we should come together and support the Army so that the bloodshed ends forever and we are relieved of the torture,” he said.

“Let us come together with determination to stand up for peace. The government is providing everything to us but we are troubled because of some people. We have to expose them so that this thing is over for good,” he said.

Security forces have detained over 60 people as part of an ongoing anti-terrorist operation following the attack in Bhata Dhurian, a notorious infiltration route for terrorists from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover and natural caves.

The massive search and cordon operation has been extended to many areas of both Poonch and nearby Rajouri but there has been no contact with the terrorists who fled the scene after the deadly ambush.

The official said a suspect has admitted to having provided logistic support to the terrorists for over two months and his further questioning is on.

Special forces are also engaged in the search operation that entered its eighth day on Thursday, officials said, adding that agencies are using drones, sniffer dogs and metal detectors in the operation.

Sources had earlier said that seven to eight terrorists in two groups are believed to have engineered the attack.

The terrorists reportedly hid under a culvert on the road from where they launched the attack on the truck which was carrying fruits, vegetables and other items to Sangiote village from the Bhimber Gali camp for iftar to be organised by the Rashtriya Rifles, according to initial investigation.

There were more than 50 bullet marks on the vehicle, which shows the intensity of the firing by the terrorists, the sources said.

The troops involved in the operation are exercising utmost caution as the terrorists may have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the densely forested area with deep gorges and caves, they said.

Experts from various agencies, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have visited the site of the attack.

According to the officials, a sniper is believed to have targeted the Army vehicle from the front before his associates fired and lobbed grenades on the vehicle from opposite sides, apparently giving the troops no time to retaliate.

“The terrorists used steel core bullets that can penetrate an armoured shield,” the officials said, adding that the terrorists decamped with the soldiers’ service weapons.

  • Christoph Waltz: ‘My only regret is that I didn’t attack Nigel Farage enough’

Christoph Waltz: ‘My only regret is that I didn’t attack Nigel Farage enough’

    [ad_1]

Why do you generally choose not to talk about the characters you have played? It seems unusual for an actor. tttophonks

Because that’s not what I do. I play them. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that actors go on their bonus DVD interviews and explain what they were doing. That’s not what an actor does. An actor plays the part for you to make up your mind. I always quote Harrison Ford: “My job is not to tell you what I think about my character. My job is to tell you what you think about my character.” It’s completely counterproductive for an actor to talk about his part. If it requires explanation, you have to ask yourself a few questions. That’s why I don’t talk about the characters.

I’ve always wanted to know what you would be doing if you weren’t acting. I’ve always imagined you as some kind of fixer for international hitmen. wildsville

I don’t even know what a fixer for an international hitman does, but it’s a nice, poetic description of people’s image of me. It’s far too late to think about what I would have done. I wanted to be an artist, I wanted to be a cinematographer, then I became an actor. Why? That is open to speculation, especially on my part. I’ve been doing this for over 45 years. So you understand my hesitance to think about what I would have done had I not become an actor. Maybe I’d have become an alcoholic, or a bank president – or both.

I can remember a very early interview in which you actually predicted that you would win an Oscar … Red_Roland

That’s incorrect. I never predicted that. If I did, then it was facetious. People run around thinking they will win the lottery, otherwise they wouldn’t be dumb enough to spend all that money. The chances that you win are millions to one. The chances that you will get run over when you cross the street are infinitely higher. Do you leave your house in the morning, thinking, “I’m going to be run over today”? Of course not. You go about your day, otherwise you couldn’t function. That’s exactly why I never said I would win an Oscar.

You won Oscars for your supporting roles in Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained. Which role in another Quentin Tarantino movie would you most – and least – like to have played? TopTramp

Here’s a big misconception perpetuated by the dreadful bonus DVD crap that is slung around. You do not choose roles by what you see. The end product is inseparably connected to the personality of the person who played it. You choose roles from what you read. To watch a movie and say, “Oh, I would’ve liked to play that part,” means you think you could have played it better. It’s a very immature thought to entertain. It’s counterproductive and completely misses the point to say: “Oh, I would’ve liked to play Robin Hood in Men in Tights,” because maybe I don’t even look good in tights.

Why do you think directors predominantly cast you as the bad guy? persekabpas

Well, that again is a limited vision. I don’t know how many roles I’ve played in movies over the course of my career. It’s probably 150, and I may have played 50 bad guys. Directors do not predominantly cast me as bad guys. This person predominantly saw me as the bad guy. But that’s a different question.

Given your recent roles in The Consultant and Old Guy, what is your personal attitude to ageing? Valeriecath

Helplessness? I’m not sure that personal attitude will give you a choice. Just this morning I saw another breakthrough in the discovery of how cells age. That doesn’t mean that we can or should reverse it. Human beings are faced with many situations that, in most aspects, are beyond our influence. We make ourselves extremely unhappy by falling into the trap that we have choices about everything. In my little book, the most important aspect is that we overlook the realm, aspects and points where we really do have an influence on our lives, existence or situation on this world. When we actually have a choice and influence, we sacrifice them for the sake of choices that go beyond our scope. Hence, I think ageing is beyond our influence. We age, we try to live a decent life, and the rest is unforeseeable.

Did you get much backlash for calling out Nigel Farage in the days after the Brexit referendum? brucevayne1000

My only regret is that I didn’t attack him enough. When he gloriously announced his retreat from politics, I said that the head rat is leaving the sinking ship, because clearly he saw that he had overshot in the face of Brexit, so he retired. Britain goes down, Nigel Farage is sitting on his money in the Cayman Islands and laughing himself silly. It’s beyond comprehension. I was at a press junket in London when I said it, and the person who did the interview took his SD card and fed it straight on to the internet.

Do you still mourn the fact that a career in opera didn’t pan out as you maybe hoped as a younger man? Kevtb1987

It’s rather pompous to say, “Do I mourn”. I studied opera but it was never really a viable option to become an opera singer.

If they remade Die Hard, would you play Hans Gruber? Ker555

    No!

I think you’d make a fantastic Doctor in Doctor Who. Would you be up for it? Felis_Lunar

You can answer these questions on the silly level that they were asked, or you can answer them more sensibly. The question is rather: would the studio be up for that? Yes, I would, gladly, and I’m sure audiences all over the world would welcome it with jubilant enthusiasm.

Would you like to play Dracula? teabags12

It’s a funny question. You can’t play a concept. Dracula is a whole concept of horror. It defines the genre of the vampire movie. An actor cannot do that. I can play a very specific part. So if the right Dracula script comes along, most definitely. Will the right Dracula script come along? Not necessarily.

In Inglourious Basterds, was that a real or a stunt apple strudel that you stubbed your cigarette in? wenders14

A precise answer to that question would require a more precise definition of the term “stunt strudel”.

Have you seen Rob Brydon’s impersonation of you? ColonelFlustered

Seeing this question, I tried to find the clip online, then I got bored looking for it. It is easy to do any impression of me. It’s not difficult. Everybody who has a distinct way of speaking is easy to impersonate. When it’s easy to recognise, it’s easy to impersonate. Someone did an impression of me on Saturday Night Live. I saw it and didn’t recognise myself, but they thought it was hysterically funny. But they always do.

What kept you going when you were a struggling actor? Jonnieog

I needed to support a family, so I didn’t have problems doing shitty jobs. The chances that I would have ended up as a cantankerous, frustrated old fart were pretty high, so I am seriously grateful that I managed to escape that. There are endless cop shows on German television, but it feels like in Germany they have more regional cop shows than anywhere else. So I played regional cops and regional murderers for what seemed like an eternity.

The Allianz adverts you star in are really clever; it’s clear you’re a good match for the campaign. Is there anything you’ve seen and wished you had invested in at the time? ChristophWaltzVaultz

Yes, I wish I had invested in Apple and Microsoft very early on! It’s a little in the vein of the lottery win. Allianz takes the other angle: what can I do to use what money I have in a meaningful and constructive way? How can I make sense with my money and create a situation that corresponds with my philosophy of life? The one term that is swirling around lately is empowerment, but education is the best annuity.

I see Allianz as an educational, informative campaign to say there is more to know than you may gather from first sight. Why not have fun with it? After all, it’s your money.

You seem like a nice guy. But should we trust you? Twist27

    No. On both counts.

Waltz has partnered with Allianz’s Start Making Cents campaign to help people prepare for their financial future.

Man Who Sheltered Militants In Poonch Attack Detained

SRINAGAR: As a first substantial breakthrough in the Poonch ambush probe, security forces zeroed in on a man who allegedly provided “shelter” and “support” to militants for at least two months before executing the April 20 attack, which claimed the lives of five soldiers.

Meanwhile, the search operation to track down the militants entered its sixth day.

Sources said that, following leads and cross-checking the statements of 50 detainees in the case, forces zeroed in on one Nasir, a local, for his involvement in sheltering and supporting the militants for more than two months before executing the ambush in Tota Gali, Bhata Dhurian in Bhimbir Gali Secto, Mendhar Poonch.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi visited the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch and took stock of the ongoing operation, the officials said, adding he asked the troops to be relentless in their pursuit. This was the Army commander’s second visit to the region in less than a week.

Five Army personnel were killed, and another was seriously injured after their vehicle was attacked by militants in Poonch last Thursday.

A massive search and cordon operation was launched after the attack and has now spread to 12 areas across the twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri.

Sources claimed that after sustained questioning and cross-checking the statements, a local, Nasir, confessed his involvement and told investigators that he sheltered the militants at his house for more than two months and “provided them logistic and material support.”

“Some of the detainees were let off after questioning,” they said.

Special Forces are also engaged in the search operation, the sources said, adding that the agencies are backed by drones, sniffer dogs, and metal detectors.

A large spread of forest areas, deep gorges, natural caves, and dense growths have been searched, and the operation now covers other places, they said.

Meanwhile, a balloon from across the border was noticed in the Jhalas area of Poonch, they said.

Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi took stock of the search operation, which entered its sixth day on Wednesday.

“He interacted with the troops deployed in remote areas and exhorted them to be innovative and relentless in their pursuit,” the Northern Command tweeted.

This was the second visit of the army commander to the border districts within five days. Earlier on April 22, Lt Gen Dwivedi had visited the attack site at Bhata Dhurian, a notorious infiltration route for militants from across the Line of Control because of its topography, dense forest cover, and natural caves. Sources had earlier said that seven to eight militants spread in two groups are believed to have engineered the attack.

According to initial investigations, the militants reportedly hid themselves in a culvert on the road from where they launched the attack on the truck, which was carrying fruits, vegetables, and other items to Sangiote village from the Bhimber Gali camp for Iftar to be organized by the Rashtriya Rifles.

Over 50 bullet marks were spotted on the vehicle that shows the intensity of the firing by militants, the sources said.

The troops involved in the operation are exercising utmost caution as the militants may have planted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the densely forested area with deep gorges and caves, they added.

The slain soldiers were from a Rashtriya Rifles unit deployed for counter-terror operations.

Experts from various agencies, including the National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA), have visited the site of the attack, the officials said.
