Israeli missile attack near Damascus wound 2 soldiers

    [ad_1]

Damascus: Two soldiers were wounded in an Israeli missile attack near the Syrian capital Damascus on early Thursday morning.

“At around 1.20am, the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial aggression from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights targeting several positions in the vicinity of Damascus,” Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported.

“The attack wounded two soldiers and caused some material losses,” it said.

Syrian air defence intercepted several missiles.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), explosions were heard early Thursday morning in the Syrian capital.

On March 7, a similar bombing put the airport out of service for days and killed three people, including a Syrian officer.

During the past years, Israel launched hundreds of air strikes in Syria, which targeted sites of the Syrian army, Iranian and Lebanese Hezbollah targets, including weapons and ammunition depots in separate areas.

Syria has been witnessing a bloody conflict since 2011, which has killed about half a million people, caused massive damage to infrastructure, and led to the displacement of millions of people inside and outside the country.

Mustafa’s husband Dr Abdel-Moneim Al-Khatib, professor of surgery at the Faculty of Medicine at Assiut University, mourned her loss on Facebook, calling her his soul mate, companion, and caregiver, and praising her as a good, obedient wife.

“I testify to God that she was a good, obedient wife who is loyal to her family and her husband’s family.”

“Heba’s passing is a great loss for my family and loved ones. May Allah rest her soul in eternal peace,” he added.

  • Greece Police claim 2 Pak men nabbed for plotting terror attack on Jewish establishment

Greece Police claim 2 Pak men nabbed for plotting terror attack on Jewish establishment

    [ad_1]

Jerusalem: Israeli espionage agency Mossad and the Greek police have collaborated in foiling a plot to carry out a massive terror attack targeting Israelis and Jews in Greece and police are continuing searches in Athens and other parts of the country following the arrest of two Pakistani suspects in the case.

In a statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Tuesday that the two Pakistani nationals – arrested by Greek police – were part of an Iranian terror network.

“The affair that was uncovered in Greece is a severe case that was successfully thwarted by the Greek security forces. It was an additional attempt by Iran to perpetrate terrorism against Israeli and Jewish targets abroad,” the PMO said.

“After the start of the investigation of the suspects in Greece, the Mossad rendered intelligence assistance in unravelling the infrastructure, its work methods and the link to Iran. The investigation revealed that the infrastructure that operated in Greece is part of an extensive Iranian network run from Iran and spanning many countries,” it added.

The two unnamed suspects, aged 27 and 29, are reportedly being held at police headquarters in central Athens. A third man, who is not in Greece, is wanted for questioning and has been charged in absentia.

Meanwhile, Greek police were continuing searches in Athens and other parts of the country. They are investigating whether other attacks on Jewish sites in Athens were being planned.

Local media reports indicated that the target of the attack was a Chabad House, which includes a Kosher restaurant and also hosts other religious services.

It is noteworthy that Pakistani terrorists who carried out the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai also targeted the Chabad House in the Indian metropolis.

Greek Police said the suspects had chosen a target of “high symbolism” and were making final preparations for the attack.

“Their aim was not only to cause the loss of life of innocent citizens but also to undermine the sense of security in the country while hurting public institutions and threatening (Greece’s) international relations,” the Greek police said.

The two Pakistanis were said to be a part of a “wide Iranian network that operates from Iran and out of many other countries”.

“An analysis of the seized information and digital data revealed and confirmed that the members of the network had already chosen as the target of the attack, a building of special importance; had carried out the reconnaissance of the area and the planning of the attack; and had received final instructions to carry out the attack,” a police statement carried by Greek news website Directus said.

According to the report, authorities began investigating the terror network following the 2021 arrest of two other Pakistani men suspected of planning attacks on Israelis. The network was linked to an Iranian plot foiled in Turkey last year, it said.

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen thanked Greece for foiling the plot.

“The Ayatollah regime in Tehran is exporting terror to the Middle East, the Mediterranean and the wider world. Only a tough stance and cooperation will halt the terror activities of the Iranian regime,” Cohen said in a tweet.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said the arrest was “further proof of the superiority of Israeli intelligence and the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and its perpetrators”.

“The Mossad and Israel’s intelligence agencies will continue to ensure that wherever Iran seeks to act against our citizens, it will be met with an effective response,” he said.

  • Hyderabad: Fake letter claiming terror attack on Ram Navami creates panic

Hyderabad: Fake letter claiming terror attack on Ram Navami creates panic

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: With just two days ahead of Sri Ram Navami celebrations, the city police went into a tizzy on Tuesday after receiving an anonymous letter claiming a terrorist attack on Sardar Vallabhbhai National Police Academy, Sri Ram Navmi Shobha Yatra, and the State BJP office.

However, the Hyderabad police have categorically denied the letter’s authenticity and declared it false. The police claimed that enmity among family members was the motive behind the mischief of writing the complaint and that a lady lawyer is suspected to be involved in the controversy. The police have made foolproof security arrangements for Sri Ram Navmi Shoba Yatra, which falls on March 30.

    Fake letter

The anonymous petitioner claimed to be Uma Maheswari, a resident of Mandi Mir Alam, and sent the letter to the National Police Academy, prompting the Telangana State Intelligence Department to take action.

The anonymous letter targeted a particular family from the Old City that includes an employee of Amazon. The letter claimed that Fatema Asadi is heading a banned terrorist organization named Saraya-Al-Mukhtar, based in Bahrain, and that her husband, an employee of Amazon, is also linked to the terrorist group.

The mischief monger claimed that the terrorist group is planning to target Sardar Vallabhbhai National Police Academy, Sri Ram Navmi Shobha Yatra, and the State BJP office, as well as suspended BJP MLA T Raja Singh.

Upon receiving the information, the intelligence department swung into action and found the letter to be fake and based on false allegations.

A press clarification from the Hyderabad Police Commissioner’s office said that the complaint is false. Earlier, two similar complaints were lodged against Asad Abidi and his wife, accusing them of being terrorists.

The first petition was lodged in the name of Radhika Rangwal. The present petition is lodged in the name of Uma Maheshwari.

“We have inquired into the previous two petitions. The inquiry revealed that Asad Abidi is an employee of Amazon. His wife is a housewife and a resident of the Michowk area. His antecedents were also verified. They do not have any terrorist links,” said an official from the Hyderabad city police.

It is learned that Fatima and her sister were to be married within their relative circle. As Fatima married Asad Abidi, the affected family got offended. The above couple is suspecting a lady from that family, who is an advocate in Delhi.

Pawar steps in amid row over Rahul’s Savarkar remark, asks Cong to tone down attack

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Amid strains in the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi alliance over Rahul Gandhi’s strident criticism of V D Savarkar, NCP chief Sharad Pawar has stepped in to play the peacemaker by conveying the Shiv Sena’s concerns on the issue to the Congress leadership.

Opposition leaders said Congress has agreed to tone down its criticism of Savarkar, which has led to unease among the NCP and Shiv Sena, its alliance partners in Maharashtra.

Pawar raised the issue during a meeting of opposition leaders convened by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday evening and made it clear that targeting Savarkar, a revered figure in Maharashtra, would not help the opposition alliance in the state, two leaders who attended the meeting told PTI.

Former Congress Presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were present at the meeting along with leaders of opposition parties.

Pawar also told Rahul Gandhi that Savarkar was never a member of the RSS and underscored that the real fight of the opposition parties was with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

As the BJP stepped up attack on Rahul Gandhi and sought his apology for “maligning” India on his recent tour to the UK, the former Lok Sabha member from Wayanad had said that he was not Savarkar and would not apologise.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had slammed Gandhi for his attack on Savarkar and said his outfit will not tolerate any insult of the freedom fighter.

The Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena had skipped the meeting convened by Kharge as a mark of protest against Gandhi’s remarks targeting Savarkar.

Jha on Sunday thanked US Secret Service for protecting him, and helping him do his job. He said he was hit on his left ear with two sticks by pro-Khalistan supporters. He also shared a video of the Khalistani supporters on his Twitter handle.

“Thank you @SecretService 4 my protection 2day 4 helping do my job, otherwise I would have been writing this from hospital. The gentleman below hit my left ear with these 2 sticks & earlier I had to call 9/11 & rushed 2 police van 4 safety fearing physical assault,” Jha tweeted on Sunday.

“At one point I felt so threatened that I called 911. I then spotted Secret Service officers and narrated the incident to them,” Jha told ANI, adding the protesters took charge of the situation.

However, the journalist decided to take no action against those who heckled him.

“The pro-Khalistan protestors in support of Amrit Pal waved Khalistan flags and descended upon the embassy in the presence of the US Secret Service. They even openly threatened to vandalize the embassy and threatened the Indian Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu,” Jha told ANI.

The protesters included turbaned men of all ages who raised pro-Khalistan slogans. They came in from different parts of the DC-Maryland- Virginia (DMV) area. The organisers used mics to make anti-India speeches both in English and Punjabi languages and targeted the Punjab Police for alleged human rights violations.

Multiple events of protests by supporters of Khalistan have been staged outside the Indian embassy and the San Francisco Consulate. Earlier this week the Indian Consulate in San Francisco was also attacked on March 20.

Visuals shared online show a huge mob brandishing Khalistan flags mounted on wooden poles, using them to smash glass doors and windows of the consulate building. They raised pro-Khalistan slogans as they broke through makeshift security barriers raised by the city police and installed two Khalistani flags inside the premises.

  • Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

Kashmiri politicians attack Centre over Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha has proved right apprehensions he had expressed in London recently.

“GOI is clearly rattled by RG for emerging as a powerful challenger pre 2024 elections. Since BJP can’t fight him politically, they are now subverting institutions because he refuses to do a Savarkar. The apprehensions he voiced in London are tragically being proven right,” Mehbooba tweeted.

Commenting on Gandhi’s disqualification, CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami said the central government was trying to control all institutions in the country for its advantage.

“I had never thought that the democracy of our country would be brought to such lows. For a long time, the government has been trying to take control of the Parliament and other institutions,” Tarigami told PTI.

He said the government was not in the mood of tolerating dissent in any form.

“Today the highest body of the country has been affected. Such a haste is astonishing! The court has barely announced the verdict, suspended the sentence and given time to him to appeal. The parliament has no time to discuss the daily issues of the common man. It has no patience to listen to the opposition voices and criticism,” he said.

“This is a warning not just to the opposition but people of the entire country that we are facing the same situation which we did not expect even during the emergency. This is not about Rahul Gandhi alone, this is a punishment for speaking the truth,” he added.

National Conference spokesman Imran Nabi Dar said today was not a good day for democracy.

“The speed with which the Lok Sabha secretariat has disqualified Rahul Gandhi raises a lot of questions. The other issue is that the defamation law under which this was done needs to be reviewed,” he said.

Dar said the move to disqualify Gandhi seems to be a fall out of the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra. “Otherwise, the ministers in the same government have named Rahul Gandhi so many times.”

“We will support all such efforts which will strengthen the democracy in the country and will oppose all those forces which try to harm the democracy,” Dar said.
