Will install 5G mobile jammers in jails for better security: Gujarat govt tells Assembly

    [ad_1]

Gandhinagar: In the wake of recovery of mobile phones from some jails during a recent search operation in Gujarat, the state government on Wednesday informed the Legislative Assembly that it has now decided to install more powerful jammers that can block even 5G mobile signals.

In a mega overnight operation on March 25, the Gujarat police conducted simultaneous searches at 17 jails across the state, during which mobile phones were recovered from three jails, said Gujarat Minister of State for Home, Harsh Sanghavi, in the Assembly on the last day of the Budget session.

The police teams had found 16 mobiles, 10 electronic items, 29 lethal objects and even narcotics during the mega drive, he said.

The minister was speaking on this issue under rule 116 of the Assembly, which deals with “matters of urgent public importance”.

During this surprise search operation across the state, police teams also found tobacco products and a pen drive from the prison barracks. Of the total 17 jails searched, including Ahmedad’s Sabarmati central jail, nothing suspicious or illegal was found from five jails, Sanghavi said.

“At present, jammers which can block 2G mobile signals are installed in our jails. Such jammers have their limitations because phones available in the market today are even 5G-enabled. Hence, for better security, we have decided to install jammers that can block even 5G signals in our jails,” he told the House.

The search operation, in which 1,700 police personnel were involved, began on Friday night. The intention behind the move was to check if any illegal activity was taking place there and also to ensure that the inmates are getting facilities they are entitled to as per the law, the minister added.

According to him, the home department has already initiated a probe against officials of those jails where such illegal items were recovered from the inmates.

  • Election Commission to announce Karnataka Assembly elections schedule today

Election Commission to announce Karnataka Assembly elections schedule today

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India will announce the schedule of the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Karnataka slated this year at 11:30 am on Wednesday, the ECI said.

The EC will hold a press conference at Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital.

Karnataka, which has 224 seats in the Assembly currently has 119 MLAs of the ruling BJP, while Congress has 75 and its ally JD(S) has 28 seats.

With months to go for the Assembly elections, the political parties including the ruling BJP, Congress and ally JD(S) began the spate of allegations and counter-allegations, with the latter attempting to corner the government over the issue of corruption.

The BJP government, being led by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is also putting in efforts to return to power and stressing on the Kannadigas issue, reservation to the Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities by scrapping a religion-based reservation for the Muslim community, a decision which the state government took recently.

The government, last year, had proposed that the companies that do not give first preference to Kannadigas will not be eligible for incentives. The government’s move came in the later part of last year in a bid to promote Kannada. It was included in the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Bill.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made several visits to Karnataka, a state which he has described on numerous occasions as the BJP’s “gateway to the South”.

Shah on Monday chaired a meeting with the state BJP core committee and election management committee in Bengaluru on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, Amit Shah lauded Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and his immediate predecessor and BJP veteran BS Yediyurappa stating that both have provided “good governance” during their respective tenures.

Citing the developmental work done by the BJP government under both chief ministers, Shah urged the people to form the party’s government with a full majority in the upcoming Assembly elections slated this year.

In February last year, Amit Shah urged the people to give a chance to former chief minister BS Yediyurappa for forming a corruption-free government.

He said that Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) are dynastic parties and such parties can never work for the welfare of the people.

“Give a chance to Yediyurappa and we will give you a corruption-free government. Congress and JDS are dynastic parties and such parties can never work for the welfare of the people. Every vote polled for JDS will benefit the Congress party, and every vote polled for Congress will benefit Siddaramaiah and his ATM government in Delhi,” he said.

Step up efforts to win all Assembly seats in Chhindwara: Shah tells BJP workers

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday appealed BJP workers to step up their efforts and ensure that the party would win all seven Assembly seats of Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district in the upcoming elections.

Addressing a public gathering in Chhindwara, Shah said that in 2019, BJP had lost Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat from narrow margin, “thus the party workers need to step up their efforts and ensure that the party would win the seat in 2024 general elections and all seven seats in upcoming Assembly elections”.

Chhindwara is considered as the bastion of Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath.

Shah urged the people to vote “overwhelmingly” for the BJP in the Assembly polls to be held later this year.

Meanwhile, hitting at Nath, the Union Home Minister said the former did nothing for the people of the state when he was Chief Minister between December 2018 and March 2020. “Previous Congress governments did not care for the tribals, the poor and those from the Backward Classes. Only the BJP can provide security, prosperity and ensure welfare of the poor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi cares for the respect of tribals, whom the Congress has neglected for years.”

He reminded that it was the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “who decided to make a tribal woman – Droupadi Murmu – the President of India”. He also reiterated that the Narendra Modi-led BJP government has announced nationwide celebration of legendary tribal leader Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary on November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan levelled several allegations on Kamal Nath, such as “stopping” various public-centric schemes during his 15 months government in the state.

Chouhan said the BJP government sent a lot of money for development of Chhindwara, but Kamal Nath was taking credit out of it.

“Since the day Congress leaders came to know that Amit Shah is coming to Chhindwara, all their leaders went on panic mode. Kamal Nath has started making big announcements to counter BJP’s promises. But, let me tell you all that Chhindwara will no more remain Kamal Nath’s bastion now. BJP will win all seven Assembly seats and Lok Sabha election this time. We have taken a pledge for it,” Chouhan added.

Kamal Nath was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Chhindwara in 1980 and repeated the feat several times, with his only loss coming in a bypoll in 1997. Even when the BJP won 28 out of 29 Lok Sabha seats in 2019, his son Nakul Nath won the election from the seat. The Congress has won all assembly seats in the district in 2018 polls.

SRINAGAR: People’s Democratic Party president and former Chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said she will never contest assembly elections as long as Article 370 is not restored.

In an interview to a New Delhi based news agency, Mehbooba Mufti said this is more of an emotional issue for her.

“Whenever I took an oath it was under two constitutions, constitution of Jammu and Kashmir and constitution of India with two flags at the same time. It is more of an emotional issue, may be its foolish on my part,” she said.

She added whenever she will take oath she wants to take it with two constitutions when it comes to assembly. (KNS)

Assam Assembly adopts resolution condemning BBC docu on PM Modi

    [ad_1]

Dispur: Assam Legislative Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution condemning the “malicious documentary” recently aired by the BBC to “malign India’s growing international standing and foment domestic instability,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday.

Assam Chief Minister Sarma said that the house has collectively demanded that the strictest action be taken against those responsible.

BBC had released a documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi titled ‘India: The Modi Question,” which caused controversy on January 21.

The Centre had issued directions for blocking multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the controversial BBC documentary on PM Modi. The Supreme Court had on February 3 directed the central government to produce original records relating to its decision to block the BBC documentary.

  • BJP frightens Hindus for political gains: Tejashwi in Bihar assembly

BJP frightens Hindus for political gains: Tejashwi in Bihar assembly

    [ad_1]

Patna: Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Tuesday launched a fresh attack on the BJP inside the state assembly where he charged the opposition party with stoking “fear in the minds of Hindus” for political gains.

Yadav was replying to the debate on budgetary allocation for the health department, a portfolio that he holds, amid a walkout by the BJP on the second consecutive day.

“I had said a lot yesterday and I had hoped that the opposition leaders will be around today to take the debate forward. But they chose to run away. They have not even moved a cut motion. I will say something about them towards the end of my statement”, Yadav told the Chair before launching into a speech that ran for over 20 minutes.

Outside the assembly, Leader of the Opposition Vijay Kumar Sinha insisted that the walkout followed “the government’s refusal to entertain a host of issues raised by us, including alleged involvement of a minister in a murder case and corruption cases against the Deputy CM himself”.

“Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has surrendered before his new ally (RJD) and the state is reverting to the era of lawlessness from which we had pulled it out with so much of effort”, alleged the BJP leader, whose party was stripped of power when Kumar snapped ties in August last year.

He also alleged that Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary, who belongs to the RJD, had been running the House in a partisan manner.

When pointed out that Yadav has sought an apology for having been proven wrong on allegations of attacks on migrants in Tamil Nadu, Sinha stood his ground saying “the report of the team of officials that toured that state should be tabled inside the House for discussion”.

Inside the House, Yadav ended his speech, after which the budgetary demand for the health department was passed by a voice vote, tearing into the opposition party.

“The BJP likes to thrive in a paradox wherein people shall remain happy as Hindus despite being unemployed and having to survive on five kilograms of free ration. Hindus comprise 85 per cent of the population and the BJP instils in them fear of the remaining 15 per cent so that they remain beholden to the party”, said Yadav.

Yadav, who had promised 10 lakh jobs to the state’s youth, which helped him catch the public imagination in the 2020 assembly polls and propelled the RJD to the position of the single largest party, also told the House that the government was planning to provide employment to 1.6 lakh people in the health department itself.

“I am grateful to the Honourable Chief Minister who is present here and has fully supported me in fulfilling the promise of 10 lakh jobs. He has personally presided over a function where appointment letters were given to more than 10,000 recruits in the health department”, the Deputy CM added.

He, however, made it clear that the government will not tolerate laxity on part of employees and pointed out that “action has been initiated against 700 doctors who have been absent from duty for long. In one cabinet meeting, termination orders were passed for 70 of such erratic officials”.

He also disclosed that plans were afoot for an “emergency cadre” to ensure that patients do not suffer during unforeseen circumstances like strikes. In addition, a new “referral policy” was shaping up to put a check on the practice of doctors in other districts referring patients to Patna at the drop of a hat.

“We are also trying to put in place conditions wherein more and more medical facilities become available in various districts. This would further de-congest the hospitals in the state capital”, said Yadav.

He also said that the government was sensitive to the fact that a large number of employees in the health department were women for the benefit of whom sanitary pad vending machines were being installed at hospitals.

“We are also considering a proposal to make these vending machines available to women admitted to the health centres”, said the young leader.

MP minister slams Cong over ‘no confidence’ motion against Assembly Speaker

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra on Tuesday lashed out at Congress over a ‘no confidence’ motion against Assembly Speaker Girish Gautam.

Even after the Speaker agreed to allow discussion on ‘no confidence’ motion brought by the Congress, Mishra, who is also parliamentary affairs minister of the state assembly, opposed the decision arguing that “if it will set up a wrong precedence.”

The Congress had brought ‘no confidence’ motion against Assembly Speaker Girish Gautam for his decision to suspend former minister and Congress MLA Jitu Patwari from the House for entire budget session for allegedly sharing false information.

Accusing the Speaker of being ‘biased’ and ‘acting at behest of the ruling BJP’, the Congress had then brought a ‘no confidence’ motion against him in the first week of this month.

On Tuesday, the opposition asked the Speaker to allow for discussion over ‘no confidence’ motion against him. Speaker Girish Gautam agreed with the Congress legislatures demand and fixed the March 27 for discussion on the matter.

However, Narottam Mishra opposed the decision saying – “No confidence motion can not be brought against the Speaker.”

“If the opposition has any doubt on Speaker’s role, they should bring a ‘sankalp patra’ resolution letter. If today this no confidence motion was accepted, it would set up a wrong precedence in history of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. It has never happened before it, but the Congress wants to set a wrong president, which is totally unacceptable,” Mishra argued.

Mishra further said he has been asserting the same things since the day ‘no confidence’ against the Assembly Speaker was brought in the House, however, the Congress was in ‘sleeping mode’ and now “when just one day is left for the budget session, they (Congress leaders) have got up.”

Meanwhile, he also alleged that the Congress legislatures did not support their leader in the House.

“Govind Singh is the Leader of the Opposition in the House, but the Congress leaders are not supporting him. They are following the directions given by Kamal Nath, who never sit in the House even for a single day. Even when he (Kamal Nath) was chief minister, he did not sit in the House for a day. Groupism in the Congress is in a way that they are sidelining their own leader- Govind Singh.”

TDP MLA attacked in Assembly at Jagan’s behest: C Naidu

    [ad_1]

Amaravati: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) national president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday alleged that a TDP MLA in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly was attacked by ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MLAs at the behest of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The former chief minister alleged that the attack on Dalit MLA, Dola Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, was pre-planned and carried out with the encouragement from the chief minister.

Strongly condemning the attack on TDP MLA inside the Assembly, he termed it the darkest day in the history of Assembly.

Never in the history of Andhra Pradesh, a MLA was attacked inside the House and today is the darkest day in the Assembly’s history, Chandrababu Naidu said.

He stated that Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy will remain as a tainted chief minister who spoiled the image of the legislative bodies. “With the physical attack on the MLA right on the floor of the Assembly, the people clearly understood the policies of the YSRCP,” he said.

Terming the ongoing session of the Assembly as a “Kaurava Sabha”, Chandrababu Naidu felt that Jagan has gone “totally mad” with the latest results of the elections to the Legislative Council.

The state Assembly on Monday witnessed unprecedented scenes when the TDP members were staging a protest by surrounding Speaker Tammineni Seetharam. They were demanding the government to withdraw an order imposing restrictions on public meetings on roads.

Amid the ruckus, an MLA of the ruling party rushed to the Podium and pulled back Swamy, who fell down. Another YSRCP MLA had also joined the manhandling. MLAs of both the parties blamed each other for the attack.

  • Moosewala’s parents protest outside Punjab Assembly complex seeking justice for their son

Moosewala’s parents protest outside Punjab Assembly complex seeking justice for their son

    [ad_1]

Chandigarh: Slain singer Sidhu Moosewala’s parents on Sunday launched an attack on the Punjab government, alleging that the crackdown on radical preacher Amritpal Singh was deliberately timed to coincide with the observance of death anniversary of their son.

“I want to ask the government why did they not find any other day to catch Amritpal? Why they chose today? Why internet has been suspended today…,” said Balkaur Singh, the father of Moosewala who was shot dead in May last year.

Singh alleged that it was deliberately done as people were to raise their voice seeking justice for Moosewala at his “barsi” (death anniversary) event, and asserted that their fight will continue till they get justice.

“Can they suppress our voice seeking justice in this manner…,” Singh said addressing the gathering in their native village Mansa. Senior state Congress leaders, including Partap Singh Bajwa and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, attended the event.

A hunt for radical preacher Amritpal Singh continued for the second day as the Punjab government extended curbs on mobile internet and SMS services till Monday noon.

The self-styled radical preacher has been on the run since the Punjab Police launched a massive crackdown on Saturday and arrested 78 members of the ‘Waris Punjab De’, headed by him.

Moosewala’s father said that when people have gathered in his native village to pay tributes to the late singer and hold prayers, they do not have access to internet.

People do not have access to internet but gangsters lodged in jails have it, he alleged.

He also claimed that gangsters like Lawrence Bishnoi were having a free run as he referred to one of his recent TV interviews. “When he (Lawrence Bishnoi) appeared on TV, I felt like my son has died again,” he said.

Balkaur Singh reiterated that the alleged masterminds behind his son’s murder were still at large.

Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, popularly known as Sidhu Moosewala, was shot dead in Punjab’s Mansa district on May 29.

His death anniversary was observed in advance.

Balkaur Singh and his wife Charan Kaur had earlier this month sat on a protest outside the Punjab Assembly complex in Chandigarh seeking justice for their son.

“Don’t force us to sit outside the gates of Vidhan Sabha again. What is our demand after all? It is just that the masterminds in the case should be brought to book. The names of people whom we suspect of conspiring our son’s murder should be questioned. Is this an unjustified demand,” he told the gathering.

Moosewala’s mother Charan Kaur alleged that gangsters lodged in jails were signing death warrants of people.

On Amritpal Singh, she said she does not know who he was or from where he had come, but added he was steering the youth towards “Sikhi” and that so far no wrong action on his part had come to the fore.

She said that the date for her son’s death anniversary event had been announced much in advance, but the authorities chose the time to announce that they had registered FIRs against Amritpal and his supporters in the Ajnala incident and launched a crackdown.

  • Delhi Assembly: BJP to bring no-confidence motion against Kejriwal, AAP to attack Centre, LG

Delhi Assembly: BJP to bring no-confidence motion against Kejriwal, AAP to attack Centre, LG

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The budget session of the Delhi Assembly, starting Friday, is likely to witness heated exchanges between the treasury and opposition benches, with the ruling AAP targeting LG V K Saxena and the Centre over the arrest of Manish Sisodia and the BJP bringing a no-confidence motion against the Arvind Kejriwal government.

The session will start with an address by the lieutenant governor (LG) and the budget will be presented on March 21, officials said.

A senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said that the session will have discussions on the arrest of former deputy chief minister Sisodia and how the lieutenant governor was interfering in the works of the elected government.

“The party will also raise the issue of the LG being involved in an incident with noted social activist Medha Patkar in 2002. We will also raise the issue of misuse of CBI and ED by the BJP-ruled Centre and the LG’s interference in government functioning,” he said.

Another senior functionary of the AAP said, “The misuse of CBI and ED by the Centre is the biggest issue. The world’s best education minister, Manish Sisodia, has been put behind bars in a false case. This is the biggest issue of Delhi.”

Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said in a statement that the BJP will bring a no-confidence motion against the Arvind Kejriwal government over its involvement in “corruption”.

The BJP MLAs, in a joint statement, said that they will corner the Kejriwal government as its two ministers were behind bars and it was facing allegations of “scams” involving liquor policy, classroom construction, electricity subsidy, and snooping by its Feedback Unit.

“In such a situation, this government has no moral or constitutional right to be in office and a no-confidence motion is being brought against the government,” it said.

Bidhuri said the budget session has been called only for five days, out of which the provision of question hour has been kept only on two days.

“This is like attacking the rights of the legislators and this government is continuously robbing the rights of the legislators,” he alleged.

The BJP will demand that the session be extended by at least 10 days, he said.

The BJP MLAs have given notices to discuss the serious problems of Delhi in the Assembly and they want that all issues should be discussed so that the truth can come before the public, he said.

Issues such as corruption, air pollution, drinking water crisis, collapse of the transport system, non-opening of new schools and colleges, lack of teachers, irregularities in mohalla clinics, and the Yamuna pollution will be raised by the opposition MLAs, he said.

Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said the session will focus on making Delhi a modern, clean and development-oriented city.

“There will be more focus on providing funds for sanitation, cleaning garbage mountains, making world class infrastructure in Delhi, making it development oriented in terms of good transport, making well connected network and bringing more electric buses.”

The annual budget for 2023-24 will be presented by Kailash Gahlot who assumed the charge as finance minister after the arrest of Sisodia by the CBI in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam.
