Hyderabad: UoH asks students, staff to not feed stray dogs

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Monday asked its students and staff members not to feed stray dogs in university facilities such as dormitories, messes, hallways, and residences.

According to a circular sent by the university administration, numerous students and employees have recently complained about stray dogs on campus. Students complained that some students/staff were feeding stray dogs, which exacerbated the situation.

The matter was of grave concern since a four-year-old kid was recently mauled and killed by a group of dogs in Amberpet, the city, it said.

The university advised its stakeholders to avoid a pack of dogs, if any, while travelling alone or in poorly lit places on campus, and said it was cooperating with the GHMC on the problem.

“Students/staff are requested to avoid feeding the stray dogs in the hostels/messes, corridors, residences, etc., and help the administration in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all stakeholders on the campus,” it added.

Shia Board asks people to build replicas of Jannat-ul-Baqi

    [ad_1]

Lucknow: The All India Shia Personal Law Board has appealed to the Shia community to build replicas of Jannat-ul-Baqi in every Shia populated area.

The call was made in Lucknow, while holding a protest meeting against the Saudi monarchy for demolishing the Islamic cemetery Jannat-ul-Baqi, 100 years ago in Madina.

The board members also asked Shia Muslims to continue to protest in order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of demolition of the holy site.

Maulana Saim Mehdi, the president of the board, has sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded that he mount diplomatic pressure on the Saudi Arabian government to reconstruct the Baqi cemetery.

Maulana Yasoob Abbas, general secretary of the board, said: “The sacrilege of holy shrines is against the preaching of the Quran as well as against the tradition of the prophet. Saudi Arabia provides funds to terror outfits in Pakistan and Afghanistan for the genocide of Shias.”

Maulana Ejaz Athar, vice president of the board, said that the UN should ask Pakistan and Afghanistan to take measures to curb and stop the Shia genocide.

  • Did Karnataka sign MoU with Foxconn or was it publicity stunt, asks Kumaraswamy

Did Karnataka sign MoU with Foxconn or was it publicity stunt, asks Kumaraswamy

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: JD-S leader and former CM H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday questioned Karnataka’s ruling BJP government to clarify whether the announcement regarding Foxconn by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was a publicity stunt, or was an MoU actually signed.

Taking to social media, Kumaraswamy charged the BJP government with the policy of “maximum publicity and zero result policy”, saying that the government is busy with publicity ads and it does not have any care towards welfare of people, development and generation of employment.

“Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and two other ministers took free publicity on Friday by stating that iPhone manufacturer Foxconn company from Taiwan has come to the state for investment. They held the signed letters in their hands stating the MOU had been signed and posed before the media,” he said.

The Taiwanese company, on the other hand, clarified that there were no binding or definitive agreements to invest in Karnataka. “If this is the case, what really happened in the presence of CM Bommai on Friday? Was it a publicity gimmick or agreement? They need to clarify before the people,” the JD-S leader demanded.

“There is importance attached to the foreign investments in the post-Covid phase. The government should tread cautiously. The state lost the Ola company because of its own mistakes. Rs 7,614 crore investment went to Tamil Nadu.

“The life of people is more important than elections and publicity. For the BJP government in Karnataka above all comes power and rest is not so important. There is no end to the woes of Kannadigas,” Kumaraswamy alleged.

Earlier, Chief Minister Bommai had claimed that the MOU with Foxconn is a big boost to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat ambitions and a testimony to Karnataka’s success in drawing investments to the state in the electronics manufacturing and assembly segment.

“Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) has announced a major investment in Karnataka. The 300 acres of land has been identified for this purpose near the Bengaluru International Airport, in Doddaballapura and Devanahalli taluks,” he had said.

A Foxconn team, led by CEO and Chairman Young Liu and comprising 16 senior leaders, were in Bengaluru on Friday where they were welcomed at the airport by IT and BT Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan.

They met Large and Medium Industries Minister Dr. Murugesh R. Nirani, and Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma, before a dinner hosted by Bommai, where he and Liu were reported to have discussed Foxconn’s investment plans and Bommai assured full support for the project, as per a state government spokesman.

  • Delhi HC asks Shehla Rashid to file response to affidavit filed by NBDSA

Delhi HC asks Shehla Rashid to file response to affidavit filed by NBDSA

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High court judge on Thursday asked former JNU student leader Shehla Rashid to file a response to the affidavit filed by the News Broadcaster and Digital Standard Authority (NBDSA). She has moved a plea against a news channel and its journalist.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav directed Shehla Rashid to file a rejoinder to the affidavit filed by the NBDSA. The matter has been listed on July 19, 2023, for further hearing.

During the hearing, the counsel appearing for the respondent journalist submitted that he will adopt the reply filed by the respondent news channel in the matter.

Rashid has alleged that one news channel aired a one-sided defamatory broadcast in which baseless allegations were levelled against her by estranged father. She had sought an apology from News Channel to mitigate the damage caused to her reputation and dignity.

On September 16, 2022, the bench of justice Yashwant Varma had issued a notice on the plea of Rashid to the broadcaster regulatory authority, a news channel and a journalist. She moved a plea against a program that was telecast by a news channel in 2020.

Rashid has sought a modification in an order passed by NBDSA on March 31, 2022, on her complaint.

The News Broadcaster and Digital Standard Authority (NBDSA) had directed the news channel to take down links to the show about Rashid.

The grievance of the petitioner was that the NBDSA refused to direct the channel to air an apology. She contended that NBDSA had given relief in other similar cases.

Such unreasoned refusal is wholly arbitrary and unsustainable in law and this writ ought to issue to remedy the violation of public duty by the respondents, the plea said.

Advocate S Prasanna, the counsel for Rashid, had submitted that it is important that there is a sense of responsibility of the media and people who make these allegations.

The counsel for NBDSA had submitted that the broadcaster has removed all the links from all platforms of the programme.

  • Roberto Jefferson’s defense asks for trial for bodily injury

    [ad_1]

Ex-deputy responds for attempted murder against 4 federal police; he has been imprisoned since october 2022

the defense of Roberto Jefferson asked the Federal Court on Monday (27.Feb.2023) that the former deputy (PTB-RJ) be tried for minor bodily injury instead of attempted murder against 4 federal police officers. He is accused of shoot officers 60 times while resisting arrest for having cursed Minister Carmen Lúciaof stf (Federal Court of Justice), on October 23, 2022. The information is from the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

Jefferson’s lawyers claimed in the 126-page brief that the former congressman did not intend to kill the federal police by shooting and throwing grenades at them. At the time, 2 agents were injured.

In addition to the request for a change in the criminal classification, the defense criticized Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF. The minister was responsible for determining the arrest warrant for the offenses committed against Minister Cármen Lúcia.

“It is absolutely unbelievable what is happening in the face of Mr. Roberto Jefferson through the completely illegal performance of Minister Alexandre de Moraes”, highlighted the document, signed by lawyers João Pedro Barreto, Juliana David and Fernanda Carvalho. The piece was forwarded to Judge Abby Ilharco Magalhães, from the 1st Federal Court of Três Rios (RJ)

    PREVENTIVE PRISON MAINTAINED

Judge Abby Magalhães maintained Roberto Jefferson’s preventive detention on January 5 of this year. Thus, he cannot have the detention converted into precautionary measures (anticipation, as a precaution, of the effects of the court decision before the trial) – that is the full of the decision (344 KB).

Document of MPF (Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office) cites the need for the defendant’s preventive detention to be reviewed every 90 days. Otherwise, it will have to be converted into precautionary measures.

In the decision, the judge cited the high offensive potential of the weapons seized at the former congressman’s house, including grenades and restricted-use weapons. She also mentioned that he shot the PF vehicle 50 to 60 times.

3 days after the attack, Minister Alexandre de Moraes turned Jefferson’s red-handed arrest into preventive.

  • Ovidio Guzmán: The US asks Mexico for the extradition of the son of ‘Chapo’

    [ad_1]

The United States presented Mexico a formal request for the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán, son of drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ GuzmánMexican government sources reported this Monday.

The United States embassy presented the file with which this man, one of the leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, is accused of drug trafficking to the Foreign Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office, detailed a government spokesman who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to to declare.

Guzmán Jr., known by the alias ‘El Ratón’, was arrested on January 5 in the city of Culiacán (northwest), in an operation that left 10 soldiers and 19 suspected criminals dead.

Authorities and drug trafficking experts believe that this 32-year-old man, along with three brothers, inherited the leadership of ‘El Chapo’ in the Sinaloa cartel and are known as ‘Los chapitos’.

Guzmán Sr. was extradited to the United States in 2017 to be tried by a Brooklyn court, where He was found guilty of crimes related to drug transfer and money laundering, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019.

After his capture, Ovidio Guzmán obtained a judicial suspension to prevent his immediate delivery to US justice, but the judge who granted this appeal gave until March 5 for Washington to present the extradition request.

The US government claims Ovidio Guzmán and his brother Joaquín for conspiracy to export cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana to that country.

For each one he offers a five million dollar reward. Mexico, on its side, accuses Guzmán Jr. of crimes against health and possession of firearms, although there are also investigations linked to organized crime.

  • Aurangabad name change: Will it solve unemployment? asks AIMIM leader

Aurangabad name change: Will it solve unemployment? asks AIMIM leader

    [ad_1]

Thane: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen’s (AIMIM) Maharashtra chief Imtiaz Jaleel on Saturday sought to know whether renaming of Aurangabad city as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will end the problems faced by people residing there and also resolve issues like unemployment.

He also accused Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of being a “puppet” in the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said the split in the Shiv Sena has adversely affected the people of the state.

The Aurangabad MP was speaking to reporters in Navi Mumbai on the first day of his party’s two-day national convention.

The Union government has approved the renaming of Aurangabad city as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and that of Osmanabad city as ‘Dharashiv’. Chhatrapati Sambhaji, the eldest son of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, was the second ruler of the Maratha state founded by his father. Sambhaji Maharaj was executed on Aurangzeb’s orders in 1689.

“Will changing the name of Aurangabad resolve the problems faced by citizens? Now that its name has been changed, the government should tell me if the people residing in Aurangabad will get water two times daily. Even today, the water is supplied every eight days,” he said.

Changing the names of places will not change their history. It will remain the same – whether it is good or bad. By changing names, history cannot be altered, he said.

Will the unemployed youths get jobs after the change in name and will there be a positive change in the lives of the farmers who commit suicide as they do not get good price for their crop, Jaleel asked.

“Instead of resolving these real issues or talking about them, they are raking up emotive issues like changing names of roads, buildings, railway stations, airports or cities. People are kept engaged in such emotive issues and efforts are on to keep them away from serious issues,” he alleged.

“Since the past several years, the BJP and Shiv Sena have been doing this and they continue to do it even now. We have opposed them and will keep opposing them. But it does not not mean that we don’t respect Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj or Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. These parties play dirty politics by taking the names of such iconic personalities, which we have never done,” Jaleel added.

Talking about the split in Shiv Sena, he said, “I pray that it splits further into four groups so that we benefit from it. Not only this, but there should be a split in the BJP.”

The fight between the two Shiv Sena factions has adversely affected the people of Maharashtra, he said.

Sena founder Bal Thackeray had protected the interests of the people of the state, which Uddhav Thackeray and CM Shinde have failed to do, Jaleel said.

“CM Shinde is a puppet in the hands of BJP leaders Amit Shah and Devendra Fadanavis,” he alleged.

  • ‘We need answers’: Oppn asks questions on LIC’s stock value slump in Adani Group

‘We need answers’: Oppn asks questions on LIC’s stock value slump in Adani Group

    [ad_1]

Members of several opposition parties have raised questions on the latest development of the value of stocks held by the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India in the embattled Adani group companies.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra in a tweet on Friday tagged FM Nirmala Sitharaman and asked the reasons behind why the centre is supporting Adani at the ‘cost of Indian public’.

“₹3200 cr loss in Adani shares for @LICIndiaForever so far.
    @nsitharaman
#IRDAI what pressure is there to support Adani at cost of Indian public?
    We need answers,” she tweeted.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala asked the Prime Minister to ‘break the silence’.

“The bitter truth is that the original deposit made by #LIC years ago in the shares of #Adani has also fallen.

LIC’s original holding of Adani shares – ₹ 36,474 crores.

On February 23, 2023 the price remained – ₹ 33242 cr. Still why not investigate Adani? PM break the silence!” he said in a series of tweets.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday targetted the BJP-led centre by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put common man’s savings at risk by investing LIC’s money in the Adani group of companies.

“Poora kuppa kar diye” as we say in Hyderabad. LIC is putting common man’s savings at risk; all for the sake of one man’s friendship.
@PMOIndia’s motto seems to be “profit before people,” he tweeted.

Kerala former finance minister Thomas Isaac said that the management of LIC has the dity to protect policy holders’ interests and not just Adanis’.

“Till when will LIC continue stand on the burning deck of Adani ship like a Casablanca? Reports say that LIC’s Adani Group investment has eroded to near cost now. LIC’s assets are public money, the management has the duty to protect policy holders interests and not just Advani’s,” he tweeted.

Supreme Court lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan asked the reason behind giving an extension to the LIC chairman when just in a span of one month after the Hindeburg expose, the value of Adani shares held by the LIC has fallen down.

“So, in just a month after the Hindenburg expose, the Value of Adani shares but by LIC from our money has fallen from 72000 Cr to 26000 Cr, more than 3250 Cr below its purchase price. And this LIC Chairman has been given extension. For putting more public money into Adani shares?” he tweeted.

The investments made in the Adani group companies by state-run insurance giant Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) have turned negative as of closing on February 23, according to data analysed from stakes held by the insurance company as per the December shareholding pattern made available on the exchanges.

If some Adani stocks do not find support soon, LIC’s investment in the beleaguered Group, whose listed companies’ share prices have fallen by up to 80 percent, will almost certainly turn negative, as combined profit has now fallen to around Rs 3,000 crore from Rs 53,000 crore profit since the beginning of this year.

Following a sell-off in Adani stocks following the Hindenburg Research report, the combined market value of LIC’s investments in Adani Group was Rs 33,000 crore on February 23, down from nearly Rs 83,000 crore on December 31, 2022. When Hindenburg published its damning report on January 24, the LIC’s investment in Adani Cos was valued at Rs 81,000 crore.

This is primarily due to the significant sell-off in Adani Group stocks.

After the publication of the Hindenburg report, LIC declared on January 30 that at the end of December, it owned Rs 35,917 crores under equity and debt in Adani Group equities.

Since the US-based short seller Hindenburg released their research a month ago alleging accounting fraud and stock manipulation, the market value of the group’s 10 listed firms has fallen by $146 billion, or approximately 60 percent. Adani has refuted the charges.

With the decline on Thursday, LIC’s investments now have a negative value or a loss. It is assumed that after January 30, LIC has not acquired or disposed of any stock in the Group entities.

LIC owns between 1.28 percent and 9.14 percent of the shares in seven publicly traded Adani companies.

The value of LIC’s investment in Adani Ports (APSEZ), in which it owns more than 9 percent, has fallen from Rs 15,000 crore on January 24 to slightly less than Rs 11,000 crore on February 23. Similarly, the value of its 4.23 percent stake in Adani Enterprises has decreased from Rs 16,500 crore to Rs 6,660 crore over the same time period. LIC also owns slightly less than 6 percent of Adani Total Gas.

Since this Adani stock has dropped nearly 80 percent in the last month, LIC’s investment value has dropped from Rs 25,500 crore on January 24 to around Rs 5,200 crore.

LIC holds 3.65 percent of Adani Transmission and 1.28 percent of Adani Green. In one month, the shares of both companies fell 73 percent. The LIC’s investment in Adani Transmission is now valued at Rs 3,000 crore, while the investment in Adani Green is valued at around Rs 1,000 crore. The loss suffered by LIC in Ambuja Cement and ACC is not severe.

According to LIC, its total exposure in Adani Group companies amounts to 0.975 percent of its total assets under management (AUM) at book value.

Meanwhile, most Adani stocks closed with significant losses on Thursday. In one month, the Group’s market capitalisation has dropped by approximately Rs 12 lakh crore.

The stock market’s fallout has resulted in a sharp decline in Gautam Adani’s wealth, which now stands at $42.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires index. He has dropped to 29th place on the world’s wealthiest list, down from second place last year.

Gautam Adani is the founder of the Ahmedabad-based conglomerate Adani Group. Infrastructure, commodities, power generation, transmission, real estate, and cement are all areas of interest for the group.
