SC asks Centre, SEBI to submit report on steps taken on Adani-Hindenburg row

    [ad_1]

The Supreme Court instructed the Centre and SEBI to submit a report on the regulatory regime and steps taken in the aftermath of the Hindenburg-Adani issue, setting Monday as the day for hearing the case.

The court has urged the government and SEBI to provide information by Monday on the causes of the market crash following the Hindenburg Research report, as well as suggestions on how the regulatory system may be reinforced to prevent such an event in the future.

The court directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to submit the note after consulting with the government and SEBI on the best course of action, and even advocated forming an expert committee to make necessary changes to the legislative and regulatory framework governing security markets.

The bench stated that because there is seamless money movement and growing middle class investment in the stock market, a strong system must be put in place to protect investors.

“The point that really bothers us is how do we protect the interest of the Indian investors,” the bench said

“Can we contemplate an expert committee that can give inputs for modifying the statutory regulations so that it doesn’t happen again?” the apex court questioned SEBI.

  • Land for power lines: HC asks rights body to serve PIL copy to Adani firm

Land for power lines: HC asks rights body to serve PIL copy to Adani firm

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked APDR to serve a copy of its public interest litigation (PIL) to Adani Power Ltd, where the rights body alleged that power transmission towers of the company in West Bengal’s Farakka were constructed without paying due compensation for land.

The lawyer for Adani Power, who was present in the court, claimed that the project’s work for setting up the transmission lines for the export of electricity from its plant at Godda in Jharkhand to Bangladesh started in 2018.

Anuj Singh, the lawyer for the company, submitted before the court that it has not yet received a copy of the petition from APDR (Association for Protection of Democratic Rights).

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice R Bharadwaj directed the petitioner to serve a copy of the petition to the company and fixed February 20 for the hearing of the case.

The petitioner’s lawyer claimed that around 35 owners of mango and lychee orchards suffered loss of livelihoods owing to the setting up of the towers, alleging that they have not been given compensation for the land taken from them for the purpose.

They also alleged that many mango and lychee trees were felled but the owners were not compensated for that as well.

The company’s lawyer claimed that the compensation offered was disputed and refused by the land owners and as such, they should have approached the district magistrate of Murshidabad, where Farakka is located, for adjudication.

  • Congress asks PM Modi to break silence on Adani issue

Congress asks PM Modi to break silence on Adani issue

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday questioned the “deafening” silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Adani issue and made a pun on his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ asking him whether it was an instance of ‘Mann ki banking’ to benefit his cronies.

“His silence is not just eloquent but also deafening. Break the silence, Mr. PM,” said AICC general secretary of communications Jairam Ramesh while posing him a set of three questions.

The Congress said it will pose three questions to the Prime Minister every day starting Sunday.

“Dear PM Modi, As promised yesterday, here is today’s set of three questions for you, HAHK (Hum Adani Ke Hain Kaun)-2? So to speak,” he said.

The Congress leader alleged that the government has a track record of “bailing out” failing disinvestments such as IDBI Bank, New India Assurance, and General Insurance Corporation using LIC funds.

“It’s one thing to bail out public sector companies and quite another to use the savings of 30 crore loyal policy-holders to enrich your friends. How did LIC make such a heavy allocation to the risky Adani Group that even private fund managers had steered clear of? Is it not the duty of the government to ensure that vital public sector financial institutions are more conservative in their investments than their private sector counterparts,” he asked.

  • Stalin asks PM Modi to relax paddy procurement norms

Stalin asks PM Modi to relax paddy procurement norms

    [ad_1]

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to relax paddy procurement norms.

Stalin, in a letter to Modi, noted that nearly one lakh hectare of paddy fields in the Cauvery delta region is submerged in water due to unseasonal rains.

Unseasonal and sudden rains in the districts of Nagapattinam, Myladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Pudukottai have inundated about to be harvested paddy (Samba) crops, he said, adding that hence, the moisture content in the harvested paddy will be much higher than the stipulated volume.

He said that the relaxation of moisture norms is a mitigation measure and cited the Central government allowing relaxation in norms on paddy procurement during the last Kuruvai season.

A similar relaxation is required for the paddy farmers now, he said.

Stalin said: “I request you to issue necessary instructions to allow the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation to procure paddy from farmers with moisture content up to 22 percent and for relaxation in the minimum limit of immature, shrunken and shriveled up to five percent as against the normal three percent and damaged, discoloured and sprouted up to seven percent as against the normal five percent with necessary value cut for this Samba crop.”

Several organisations of paddy farmers have asked the Chief Minister for relaxation in procurement norms.

PMK state President Anbumani Ramadoss has also urged for the total exemption of paddy crops from moisture conditions.

  • ‘Ab ki baar kisan sarkar’: KCR asks Maha farmers to join hands at BRS’ meet

‘Ab ki baar kisan sarkar’: KCR asks Maha farmers to join hands at BRS’ meet

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) supremo K Chandrashekhar Rao asked the farmers of Maharashtra to learn to write and enact laws along with running the plough in their fields.

“My dear farmer brothers, too much time has passed. You have waited too much for help. Until now, you have run ploughs letting others write. Now, you should get ready not just to run the plough, but also to write and make laws,” he said.

KCR made these remarks at the BRS’ public meeting held at Nanded, Maharashtra. This is BRS’ first public meeting outside Telangana.

“This party was first named TRS and was only present in Telangana. After looking at the situation in the country, we understood that it’s important to bring transformation to the ideology that is ruling this nation. That is why we have decided to work on the national level. BRS is getting support from across the country,” KCR said.

KCR said that in spite of 75 years of independence and successive governments, there is not much change on the ground level. “Water for drinking and irrigation purposes and electricity are not being provided to people. Are the resources not available?” he asked.

The BRS supremo said that Maharashtra is seeing the most number of farmer suicides in the country and its extremely sad. “Please think. When will someone die by suicide? When all the routes in life come to an end, people in distress die by suicide. Why are farmers, who are feeding this country, who are toiling day and night, forced to die by suicide?’ he asked.

KCR said that for the first time in the history of India, his party has pushed forward the theme of ‘Ab ki baar kisan sarkar’ keeping BRS’ central theme around farmers’ welfare. “Please go tonight to your villages and discuss this. India is a country of buddhi jeevi (wise), not buddu (fools),” he said.

The BRS supremo further remarked that when the time came, the greatest of leaders were overthrown by people very easily. “When the emergency was enforced, Jai Prakash Narayan’s movement made people overthrow such big leaders,” he remarked.

  • Imran Khan asks supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement in Pakistan

Imran Khan asks supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement in Pakistan

    [ad_1]

Lahore: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Saturday asked his workers and supporters to prepare for ‘Jail Bharo’ movement across the country, media reported.

Khan’s comments come in the wake of sedition cases filed against his party’s Senior Vice-President Fawad Chaudhry and former member of the National Assembly Shandana Gulzar, while Senator Azam Swati and Shahbaz Gill were booked earlier for speaking against the military.

During his televised address, the deposed Prime Minister said his party could have opted for a nationwide strike, but will choose to fill the prisons instead in light of the fears that the country’s economy might deteriorate further, Geo News reported.

“We have two options: Considering what they have been doing, we could have gone for a wheel-jam strike and demonstrations – which is also a way and a democratic one.”

“But since the state of economy is so bad, it’ll worsen. Therefore, I ask all my workers, the Pakistani nation and everyone to prepare for Jail Bharo movement,” Khan said, Geo News reported.

The former premier, while addressing the youth and nation, added that his party won’t stay quiet on the violence being inflicted on his party’s members. “Instead of causing destruction, we would now prepare Jail Bharo movement.”

“It was their plan to weaken Tehreek-e-Insaf by frightening and threatening,” the PTI chief said.

Khan claimed his party never committed such atrocities in its tenure as the Pakistan Democratic Movement-led government in the centre has.

“Fawad Chaudhry was picked up from home at 3 a.m. What did Shandana Gulzar do that made her a terrorist. As the court gives bail to Sheikh Rashid, more cases are being filed against him,” the PTI chairman said, insisting how action has been taken against every person who called out the regime change, Geo News reported.
