EC asks BJP to provide evidence of allegations made against Congress

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday issued a notice to the Karnataka BJP to provide “verifiable and traceable” facts by Tuesday evening regarding its newspaper advertisement that described the Congress as “the most corrupt party in the world”.

The Congress had approached the poll panel against the advertisement issued by the BJP’s Karnataka unit.

In its notice to the BJP Karnataka president, the Election Commission (EC) said criticism of the policy and governance of opponent parties is a right guaranteed and enshrined in the Constitution as well as an essential function of various political actors under India’s electoral process.

    MS Education Academy

“However, while exercising this right and performing this essential function, the various political parties are expected to uphold high standards of public discourse and adhere to the various provisions of the model code and relevant laws,” it said.

The commission has directed the state BJP to “convey the verifiable and traceable facts” regarding the claims made in the advertisement given by them along with an explanation, if any, by 8.00 pm on May 9 and also put that in “public domain”.

Earlier, it had issued a similar notice to the Congress for its “corruption rate card” advertisement.

EC asks Congress chief to clarify, rectify social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Election Commission on Monday asked Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to clarify and rectify the party’s social media post on Karnataka’s sovereignty remark attributed to Sonia Gandhi.

The EC letter to Kharge came following a complaint by the Bharatiya Janata Party regarding a tweet which appeared on the official Twitter handle of the Indian National Congress on May 6.

In its complaint, the BJP has alleged, “Karnataka is a very important member state in the union of India and any call to protect the sovereignty of a member state of the Union of India amounts to a call for secession and is fraught with perilous & pernicious consequences.”

    MS Education Academy

The BJP also alleged in its complaint to the EC that the tweet is violative of the mandatory oath undertaken by the political parties under section 29A (5) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 at the time of registration.

“In view of the above, you are requested to clarify and take rectification measures in respect of the social media post which has been put up on the INC Twitter handle and attributed to Chairperson, CPP,” the EC letter read.

A former Congress chief, Sonia Gandhi is currently the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson.

After Gandhi addressed a campaign rally in Hubballi in Karnataka on Saturday, the Congress tweeted from its official handle: “CPP Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji sends a strong message to 6.5 crore Kannadigas: ‘The Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka’s reputation, sovereignty or integrity’.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have attacked the Congress over the remark.

  • Mayawati asks Telangana’s people to oust BRS, declares BSP’s CM face

Mayawati asks Telangana’s people to oust BRS, declares BSP’s CM face

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Sunday announced that party’s Telangana unit President and former IPS officer R.S. Praveen Kumar will be the chief ministerial candidate of the party.

Addressing a public meeting here, she declared that if the BSP is voted to power in Telangana, Praveen Kumar will be the Chief Minister.

She said after taking voluntary retirement from the Indian Police Service (IPS), he had been working with missionary zeal to strengthen the party in Telangana. She hoped that he would take very good care of people like the BSP did in Uttar Pradesh when it was in power.

    MS Education Academy

Mayawati appealed to people to bring her party to power in Telangana in the elections scheduled in next few months and also give the most number of Lok Sabha seats from the state to the BSP in the elections to be held next year.

She said if SCs, STs, OBCs, Muslims and other minorities and other weaker sections want a life of dignity and want to liberate themselves from oppression, they should bring the BSP to power.

Taking a dig at Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao for his call for amending the Constitution, the BSP leader urged people to throw Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) out of power. She said the government which is talking of changing the Constitution drafted by Babasaheb Ambedkar, should be thrown out of power.

Mayawati did not agree that BSP is weakening in Uttar Pradesh. “You may be wondering why the BSP is weakening in Uttar Pradesh but it is not weakening. As long as elections were held with ballot paper, our party grew in popularity but when EVMs were introduced, we lost our votes due to manipulation in EVMs,” she claimed.

The BSP leader also alleged that in states where the BJP is growing strong, conspiracies are being hatched to split the votes of Dalits and weaker sections by floating smaller parties.

Mayawati also took potshots at Chief Minister KCR for trying to copy BSP to promise land for Dalits. “He promised 3 acres of free land but did not implement it,” she said.

She also alleged that for the sake of votes, KCR named the State Secretariat after Babasaheb Ambedkar government building and installed his tallest statue.

She recalled that when Telangana people were fighting for their own state, the BSP was the first party to raise its voice in Parliament in their support and it also supported the Bill brought in Parliament for creation of the state.

Mayawati said that the weaker sections, Dalits, tribals, backward, youth and unemployed in Telangana were hit by irregularities in recruitment. She alleged that the state government is trying to suppress the voice raised against these irregularities.

The BSP leader also questioned the silence of Chief Minister over the release of a convict in the murder of slain Dalit IAS officer G. Krishnaiah.

She was referring to the release ofAformer MP Anand Mohan Singh by the Bihar government.

The gangster-turned-politician, who had instigated the bureaucrat’s lynching in 1994 and was sentenced life imprisonment, was recently released from jail after Bihar government tweaked the rules.

Mayawati said BSP raised its voice against the release of the convict and demanded justice for the family of the slain officer.

Ashok Gehlot asks BJP: Aren’t we Hindus?

    [ad_1]

Jaipur: Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday accused the BJP of linking the voting preference of people with Hinduism and asked whether those who don’t vote for the party are not Hindus.

“You (BJP) come up with one issue or the other to provoke people in the name of religion, caste. All are Hindus. Aren’t we Hindus? Where is it written that the one who votes for the BJP is a Hindu?” Gehlot asked.

Speaking at the inauguration of Haldighati Youth Festival at Nathdwara in Rajsamand district, Gehlot appealed to the youth to decide whether they want development or just issues that provoke people.

    MS Education Academy

“In a democracy, some vote for the BJP, some don’t. Some vote for the Congress, some don’t,” he said.

“Where did they get this definition that those who do not vote (for the BJP) are not Hindus? It is not in the interest of the country,” Gehlot said.

Alleging that a BJP government will stop the schemes run by the current government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said, “I would like to tell the youth, you decide whether you want development, whether you want a vision or (not).”

He also told the youth that “knowledge is power”.

He said Rajasthan today ranks first in the country in the IT sector.

HC asks IAF to consider publication of book written by retired airman after deleting classified content

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court asked the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Directorate of Intelligence on Monday to consider whether a book written by a retired air force officer can be published after certain “classified” content is removed from it.

Hearing the retired airman’s plea for permission to publish the book, Justice Prathiba M Singh directed that a meeting between the petitioner and the officials concerned be held within a month and sought a report on it.

The respondent authorities said the clearance for the book’s publication cannot be given as its content is not conducive to the interests of the IAF.

    MS Education Academy

It was said that in accordance with the IAF’s regulations, classified material cannot be discussed and the book contains certain information that has not been “declassified”.

The court was told that the objectionable content included information about certain “counter-intelligence operations”.

The petitioner said he was willing to amend or delete the objectionable portion.

“Let the petitioner be heard by officials of the Indian Air Force and the Directorate of Intelligence in order to explore the possibility of whether the book can be published after the content is amended or deleted,” the court ordered.

The petitioner, a former group captain, told the court that he decided to write the book on his experiences and according to a reply to a query filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, there are no guidelines in place in respect of a retired air force official writing fictional books.

The court also asked the authorities to file their response.

The matter would again be heard by the court on October 20.

  • ‘What did you do to stop corruption in Karnataka’, Rahul asks PM Modi

‘What did you do to stop corruption in Karnataka’, Rahul asks PM Modi

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: Continuing his attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the poll-bound state of Karnataka, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to explain all the action he took to stop corruption in the state.

Addressing a huge public rally in Hassan, Rahul Gandhi said: “The BJP first stole your government and then, through the government, it stole money from you. Now, the PM gives speeches here. But the truth is that he knew about all the corruption that took place in Karnataka in the last three years.

“If even a six-year-old child in Karnataka knows it, the PM must also be aware of it. So, I ask him — what action have you taken to stop corruption in Karnataka in the last three years? And, against how many people did you take action?” Rahul Gandhi questioned.

    MS Education Academy

“Ask any kid of Karnataka — what is the name of the government? He will tell you ’40 per cent Sarkar’. Everyone knows this. The Contractors’ Association wrote to the PM telling him about the 40 per cent commission; he may have read the letter but didn’t give any reply. Dingaleshwar Swami ji says that 30 per cent commission was taken from his mutt, and he was given a 10 per cent discount,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi further said: “In the Mysore Sandal soap scandal, a BJP MLA’s son was caught with cash. There were scams in recruitment of Police Sub-Inspectors, Asst. Professors, Asst. Engineers. There was a Cooperative Bank scam.

“Modi ji, please talk about these issues in your speeches. You come here and say that ‘Congress attacked me’. Please also tell what you did for Karnataka in the last 3 years. Here, the question is not about the PM. It is about Karnataka’s youth, farmers and women,” he said.

Posing another question to PM Modi, the former Congress president said: “Modi ji, what action did you take when violence took place at Karnataka-Maharashtra border? How did you help Karnataka in the matter of the water dispute between Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka?

“When we give speeches, we take the names of our leaders. Like I showed respect to Congress leaders before starting my speech. We talked about Siddaramaiah ji, Shivakumar ji, Kharge ji, Parameshwar ji. You (addressing the PM) come to Karnataka but don’t talk about your leaders. You don’t even take the name of Yeddyurappa ji or Bommai ji. Take the names of BJP leaders also in your speeches, they will feel good. Respect them as well,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress has laid out a roadmap for Karnataka for the next five years.

“We have brought out these schemes after talking to the public. Congress is going to give 5 revolutionary schemes to the people. We are going to put the money, looted from them by the BJP, back in their pockets,” he said.

“BJP leaders love the number 40. They took a 40 per cent commission in every work. Make them remember this ’40’ number. For 3 years, they made you remember the ’40’ number. Give them 40 seats in elections and Congress has to be given at least 150 seats because if we get less than 150 seats, the BJP will again try to ‘steal’ the government. Teach a lesson to the BJP,” Rahul Gandhi told the people.

Vinesh asks cousin Babita not to weaken wrestlers’ protest

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: A war of words broke out on Saturday between Phogat cousins Vinesh and Babita with the former asking the latter not to “weaken” the ongoing protest by the wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The country’s top wrestlers, including Vinesh, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia, have been protesting since Sunday, demanding criminal action against Singh over alleged sexual harassment and intimidation.

“If you are not standing for the rights of aggrieved female wrestlers, Babita sister, I request you with folded hands not to weaken our movement. It has taken years for female wrestlers to speak up against their abusers. You are also a woman, try to understand our pain,” Vinesh tweeted.

    MS Education Academy

Babita had earlier tweeted about Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s visit to Jantar Mantar to meet the protesting wrestlers.

“Priyanka Vadra reached Jantar Mantar with her personal secretary Sandeep Singh to seek justice for women wrestlers, but this person himself has been accused of misbehaving women and insulting a Dalit woman,” Babita, who contested and lost in the last Haryana Assembly elections from BJP ticket, said in her tweet.

The Delhi Police Friday registered two FIRs in connection with sexual harassment allegations levelled by women wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor which has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code concerning outraging modesty.

The second FIR has been registered for carrying out comprehensive investigations into the complaints by adult complainants under relevant IPC sections pertaining to outraging of modesty.
