Gindan Tamashe Asked Serious, Uncomfortable Questions on Existence, Identity

    [ad_1]

    by Maleeha Sofi

SRINAGAR: Novelist and playwright Sohan Lal Koul has remained a popular choice for theatre because he has his hand on the pulse of society. In the last festival, at least three of his plays were staged in a single festival.

Koul’s Gindan Tamashe which was staged at Tagore Hall tackled the issues related to the issue of existence and identity. It asked very pertinent questions and provoked the audience to stay engaged.

It started in a set of the semi-lit enclosure with no doors and a single window. It was messy with three dustbins, some dirty clothes, tissue papers all over the floor and two beds on which two people were sleeping.

The beds exhibited a contrast. One had a white and blue bed sheet with faded colours. The pillow was stripped without any cover. The other bed was a shining, bright, and floral red colour bedsheet. The pillow was also covered with black velvet floral cover giving it an exquisite look. It suggests the two persons resting belonged to two different classes.

The man – who is later given the name Seen, wakes from the ‘inferior’ bed wakes up. He seems to be around 40-50 years old. His face shows confusion as if seeking answers to some of his frustrations. Finally, he breaks the silence and starts asking himself “Who am I?” and “Where am I?”

Soon, he sees the man on the other bed and assumes he would have answers to his questions. After several attempts, he wakes him up but he also has no answers to any of his queries. He – later given the name Sheen – was in his twenties. Both of them have perplexed thoughts. They ask each other questions about their past, existence, and the mistake that would have led them there, and the biggest mystery at that point was their identification.

The whole conversation between Seen and Sheen showed a serious debate over one’s existence in the world. Sheen claimed to be the master of Seen. He wanted to continue it the same way no matter if they remember anything or not. However, their debate nullified the difference in caste and status between them. Seen got offended initially when Sheen sat on his bed as he was poor apparently. With the progress in their discussion, they exchanged their seats subconsciously. It made one thing clear while they struggled to recall their identification, they forgot their class differences. From death to life, fiction to reality, punishment to freedom, they discussed all the possibilities of their identity. They yearned to get a second chance so that they live happily. This came after a series of suicidal thoughts exhibited by the duo in the frustration of knowing themselves and their identity.

Amid the arguments, they receive a letter from the window. They do not open it assuming that it might be from the angel of death. Again, a deep conversation about the letter takes place. Somehow, they decide to read it. The letter has been addressed to Gindan Tamashe (Toys). It was written by a child asking his toys to return home. The child had thrown them away earlier because of the pandemic. This led them to question themselves, once again, ‘are we just toys thrown in the garbage’?

Soon another character jumps into the sets. He is well-dressed but equally fearful. On asking why and how he is here, he responds by saying he is being chased by the angel of death and this – the set – is the safest place. He tells them the angel has spread posters everywhere about him and kept a reward on him. The two men who were already dominating the set started planning that they should inform the angel and claim the bounty.

They started executing the conspiracy for which they needed to open the window. As they opened it, a voice from the window tells them that opening the window was the condition for taking their life. Now that they have opened, their lives will be taken away. The voice ordered them to go back to their respective beds. Sheen requested Seen to exchange the beds as he wanted to give him comfort, which he did not get his whole life. They sleep on each other’s beds.

The next scene shows them as toys. A girl with her father comes to take them along with her. Her father gives her permission to take only one and she takes the one on the bed that appeared poor for the same reason. It conveyed that Sheen stayed as a toy and Seen was given a second chance. However, he wasn’t happy with the second chance now because he is all alone and cries till the end.

The play by the Young Dramatist Society was directed by Altaf Hussain and designed by Mushtaq Baqal. The overall supervision was done by Javid Gilani. Seen was played by Shahzad Shabir, and Sheen by Shahid Malik. The third-person man escaping from death was played by Imran Farooq, father and daughter were played by Tanveer Ahmed and Arbeen Jan respectively.

The costumes were provided by Shabir Ahmad Mir, lighting was designed by Balbir Singh, Music arrangement by Rasiq Khan, Production management by Javid Khan, stage management by Khursheed Ahmad Mir (Yamberzal Youth Club), Audio and video arrangement by Wasaaqat Mehraj. The coordinators were Shabir Ahmad Bhat and Latif Ahmad Shah.

Sohan Lal Koul, it may be recalled here is a popular playwright. A novelist and having a doctorate in Urdu, he has written several novels and plays. His novels include Waehshi Kaeth, Panien Gunah, Yele saer PaethGoav, Abysmal and Ded. He has also written a few plays. He has worked as a programme executive in Doordarshan. In a 13-day Annual Drama Festival at Tagore Hall in the year 2021, three of his plays were presented.

Hyderabad: HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited was asked to pay Rs 45,00,000 by the state Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission on account of service deficiency.

Monica Khanna, a resident of Narayanguda along with her husband, Nitin Khanna obtained an online HDFC Life Click to Protect insurance policy in 2014 from the company by paying a premium of Rs 16983 and thereafter paid the subsequent premium from 2014 to 2018.

Nitin was admitted to Global Hospitals in 2018 after he suffered health issues and later passed away leaving behind the complainant, two daughters and his mother.

However, the company filed its written version contending that they repudiated the claim based on the investigation report on the ground of non-disclosure of pre-existing diseases such as diabetes, autoimmune hepatitis with jaundice, and Wilson’s Disease, which the deceased was suffering from.

“You live thanks to this company!” The politician’s comment for the selfies asked of Maria De Filippi during the funeral home: his words

    [ad_1]

Also Mario Adinolfi on selfie with Maria De Filippi intervenes to have his say. Taking pictures with the widow, albeit famous, in front of the coffin of her husband, Maurizio Costanzo, also famous, is in bad taste for the Italian journalist and politician. But Adinolfi continues arguing that, moreover, the presenter lives thanks to this company, so nothing strange.

The Italian journalist and politician has decided to comment on the ugly gesture of some fans who, in the funeral home set up for Maurice Costanzothey asked for a photo with Maria De Filippi, his fourth wife, who was widowed.

In fact, someone had the courage to ask the host of You’ve Got Mail for a selfie, visibly grief-stricken. Many people have criticized both the fans and De Filippi’s choice to comply with their requests. To these voices is added that of Mario Adinolfi.

Adinolfi, in fact, said that it was obviously an indelicate and inappropriate gesture. But then he took the opportunity to attack Maria De Filippi, almost as if to tell her that she brought it on herself.

If you live thanks to a clouded society that ‘dances with the stars’ and is passionate about polemic controversies, you cannot preach to poor people who ask for selfies from the famous widow of the deceased famous. It is true that it is indelicate to ask, but De Filippi knows that it is a price to pay.

Mario Adinolfi, selfie with Maria De Filippi: his post on social media causes discussion

The journalist’s words were deeply criticized. The public on Twitter responded in kind to Adinolfi, for a comment according to many as inappropriate as the request for a selfie in front of Costanzo’s coffin.

In fact, there are those who argue that Mario Adinolfi showed the same zero empathy that the people who asked the widow to pose in the funeral home showed, where many said their last goodbyes to her husband.

It “maybe was just a wild and crazy coincidence” drug company Moderna announced a plan to give free Covid vaccines to uninsured Americans right as a Senate committee asked them to testify — but it was “a step in the right direction,” Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday.

“Amazing coincidence, that happened the same exact day we announced that we were inviting them to testify,” Sanders (I-Vt.), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

The committee last week asked Moderna’s CEO, Stéphane Bancel, to appear in a panel next month examining proposed plans to raise the Covid vaccine’s list price to $110 to $130 per dose.

  • Adani row: ‘Were LIC, SBI asked to invest in Adani group despite stocks crash?’

Adani row: ‘Were LIC, SBI asked to invest in Adani group despite stocks crash?’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday asked the government whether instructions were issued to LIC and SBI to invest in the Adani Enterprises FPO despite a drastic fall in its share price after a Hindenburg report on the conglomerate.

Posing a set of three questions to the government as part of the party’s “Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun” series, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to break his silence on the issue today.

He claimed that among the anchor investors in the Adani Enterprises follow-on public offering (FPO) were the Life Insurance Corporation of India which bid Rs 299 crore, State Bank of India Employees’ Pension Fund which bid Rs 99 crore, and SBI Life Insurance Company which bid Rs 125 crore.

“These publicly owned institutions participated in the FPO despite the fact that the market price had dropped far below the issue price and that both LIC and SBI already owned large chunks of Adani Group equity. Were instructions issued to LIC and SBI to deploy the savings of crores of Indians to once again bail out the Adani Group,” he asked in a statement.

Posting the questions, Ramesh tweeted, “Mahashivaratri today and along with it here is HAHK (Hum Adani ke Hain Kaun)-13. The 13th set of questions to the PM. Aaj Toh Chuppi Todiye Pradhan Mantriji (Break your silence today, Prime Minister)!”

Under the HAHK series, the opposition party has been posing questions to the government on the Adani issue.

In its latest set of questions to the prime minister, the Congress asked, “Is it true that a high-profile Union Minister with longstanding commercial links made personal calls to five-six of the most well-known businesspersons on behalf of Gautam Adani and asked them to invest their personal funds in the FPO to save Gautambhai from embarrassment? Does this not represent a conflict of interest worth investigating? Did this Union Minister act on instructions from you?”

The Congress leader also asked if the family offices that were pressured to bail out the Adani FPO given assurances that this was only to save Gautam Adani’s reputation and that the FPO would be subsequently cancelled and the money returned to the investors.

“Is it not a violation of Indian securities regulations to hide this relevant information from most investors and only to share it with a select few? Is it ethical to dupe FPO investors in this way,” he asked.

Recently, Adani Group stocks had taken a beating on the bourses after the Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including fraudulent transactions and share-price manipulation, against the business conglomerate.

The Gautam Adani-led group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements.

The Congress has demanded a joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Adani issue. The opposition party also stalled proceedings of both Houses of Parliament during the first part of the Budget Session.

  • In a racist tirade, Nikki Haley asked to go back to ‘her own country’

In a racist tirade, Nikki Haley asked to go back to ‘her own country’

    [ad_1]

New York: Calling Indian-American Nikki Haley a ‘bimbo’ and ‘preposterous creature’, conservative pundit and author Ann Coutler asked the Republican presidential candidate to return to India.

“Why don’t you go back to your own country?” Coulter said, making an appearance on the ‘The Mark Simone Show’ podcast this week.

Born Nimrata ‘Nikki’ Randhawa, Haley announced her presidential bid on February 14 in a video message where she proudly talked about her Indian heritage.

She had said that as a brown girl, growing up in a black-and-white world, she saw the promise of America unfold before her.

“Her candidacy did remind me that I need to immigrate to India so I can demand they start taking down parts of their history,” Coutler said.

Coutler’s rants did not stop at just Haley, she targeted India as well, the NBC News reported.

“What’s with the worshipping of the cows? They’re all starving over there. Did you know they have a rat temple, where they worship rats?”

Coulter said that Haley’s decision to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of South Carolina’s Statehouse following the 2015 mass shooting at a predominantly black church in Charleston, angered her.

She slammed Haley, calling her a “Bimbo” and a “preposterous creature” for her decision.”This is my country, lady,” she said.

“I’m not an American Indian, and I don’t like them taking down all the monuments,” NBC News reported Coutler as saying.

Haley, so far, has not responded to Coutler’s comments.

Haley has been a rising star in the Republican party and long expected to run for the White House, IANS reported earlier.

She is a former two-term Governor of South Carolina, one of America’s most conservative states, and former Ambassador to the UN, a cabinet-rank position she held in the administration of then President Donald Trump.

Haley is the third Indian American to seek the Week House, following Bobby Jindal in 2015-16 and Kamala Harris in 2019-20.

Hindu temple in Australia gets threat calls; asked to raise Khalistani slogans

    [ad_1]

Melbourne: A prominent Hindu temple in Australia has received threatening calls in which it was asked to raise pro-Khalistani slogans if it wanted to observe Maha Shivratri peacefully which falls on February 18, a media report said on Friday.

The threatening call to Gayatri mandir in Brisbane came after three Hindu temples were vandalised in Australia’s Victoria state allegedly by “Khalistani supporters” with anti-India graffiti.

Jai Ram, the president and Dharmesh Prasad, the vice president of Gayatri Mandir received separate calls on Friday from a man who identified himself as ‘Guruawadesh Singh’ seeking the Hindu community to support the “Khalistan Referendum”, The Australia Today reported.

Claiming that he was calling from Nankana Sahib in Pakistan, the anti-India supporter asked temple officials to ask the Hindu community to support the ‘Khalistan Referendum’.

“I have a message in relation to Khalistan… if you plan to celebrate Maha Shivratri …. then ask the priest to support Khalistan and raise ‘Khalistan Zindabad’ slogans five times during your event… now show me how you will raise this slogan,” the report said, quoting Singh’s warning message to the president of the temple.

Talking about the threat call, Prasad said that violence towards religious places is the biggest crime and “we as Hindus should be able to practice our religion without fear”, the report said.

Later on, Temple’s Public relation officer Neelima also said that received several calls from an American number.

The threatening call to Gayatri mandir came after recent attacks on three Hindu temples that were vandalised in Australia’s Victoria state allegedly by “Khalistani supporters” with anti-India graffiti.

Earlier, a Kali Mata Mandir in Melbourne’s northern suburb of Craigieburn also received a threatening call to cancel a bhajan and puja event or face consequences.

The Indian-Australian community is still recovering from the vandalism of three temples by Khalistani extremists.

On Jan 23, the management of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple also known as the Hare Krishna Temple in Melbourne’s Albert Park found the walls of the revered temple vandalised with graffiti “Hindustan Murdabad”.

On January 16, the historic Shri Shiva Vishnu Temple in Carrum Downs, Victoria, was vandalised in a similar manner.

On January 12, the Swaminarayan temple in Melbourne was defaced by ‘anti-social elements’ with anti-India graffiti.

Passport offices asked to prioritise Haj pilgrims’ applications

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, directed passport offices across the country to accord high priority to applications of prospective Haj pilgrims and ensure timely issuance of passports. The process will be done upon completion of requisite documentation, police verification and other formalities.

A circular issued by the Ministry of External Affairs, stated that the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India, has informed that the process for inviting online Haj applications for Haj 2023 has begun.

They have further stated that this year the country has received a quota of 1, 75,025 for Indian pilgrims. But like in the previous years, only those pilgrims who have machine readable Indian passports will be eligible to apply, the circular stated.

Gurugram: Minor domestic helper tortured, asked to eat leftovers from dustbin, Couple held

    [ad_1]

Gurugram: A couple was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly torturing and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl who worked for them as a domestic help, police said.

The accused, Manish Khattar (36) and his wife Kamaljeet Kaur (34), were produced before a city court on Wednesday. The court sent Khattar to two-day police remand while his wife was sent to judicial custody.

A joint team of police and Sakhi, a one-stop crisis center, on Tuesday, rescued the girl hired by the couple to care for their three-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Several injuries were found on her hands, feet and mouth, they said.

According to the complaint filed by Pinky Malik, the Sakhi center in-charge, the girl from Ranchi (Jharkhand) was hired through a placement agency.

The couple made her work and also beat her mercilessly daily. Along with not letting her sleep the whole night, they also didn’t give her any food. Her mouth was completely swollen while injury marks were found everywhere on her body, Malik alleged.

The girl has been admitted to a hospital in critical condition. She is still being treated, police said.

According to the police, the arrested couple are residents of New Colony. Kaur is a public relations officer with a private firm while her husband works with an insurance company.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple hired the girl five months ago to take care of their child. During this period, they would beat her daily. She was also sexually harassed, the police said.

The child used to eat leftover food thrown in the dustbin.

An FIR was registered against the couple under sections 323 (causing hurt), 342 (wrongful confinement) of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and the POCSO Act at the New Colony police station.

“We have arrested the accused couple who confessed to the crime,” said Inspector Dinkar, the SHO of New Colony police station.
