  • Several women wrestlers write to PM Modi, IOA, SAI demanding fair Asian Games trials

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Several women wrestlers, including medal winners from Commonwealth Games and Asian Championship, on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the ad-hoc panel running the WFI, requesting “fair trials” for Asian Games amidst reports that the six protesting grapplers may be given exemption.

    BookMyMBBS

The 24 women wrestlers from Sir Chhotu Ram Akhada in Rohtak, who also wrote to SAI Director General Sandeep Pradhan, have conveyed that they won’t accept two-stage trial or any another relaxation given to the protesting grapplers.

The IOA-appointed ad-hoc panel has announced that Asian Games trials will be held on July 22-23 but did not reveal the criteria.

    MS Education Academy

The wrestlers are even preparing to hit the roads for a fresh protest and approach the judiciary if any discriminatory decision is taken by the IOA ad-hoc committee.

Panel head Bhupender Singh Bajwa had on June 16 conveyed to the six protesting wrestlers — Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Sangeeta Phogat, Satyawart Kadian and Jirender Kinha — that they will have to compete in just one final bout against the winners of the initial trials.

According to sources, the ad-hoc panel is deliberating over a criteria which will exempt current Olympic and World Championship medallists from the trials, which will benefit Bajrang, Vinesh and Ravi Dahiya.

The IOA has to submit the names of the participating wrestlers by July 23.

“Even if only three Olympians were to be given concessions, this would be wrong to the youngsters,” the wrestlers said in the letter that was also marked to Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.

“We feel this decision (two-stage trial) is unfair and unjust to the other emerging wrestlers of the nation as we have to fight and win approximately four to five bouts and one more qualifying bout against one of these wrestlers and in contrast they have to just fight single bout to qualify which is biased, unjustified and against the spirit of right of equality.”

The letter further read, “India is a democratic country… and under Article 14 of the Indian constitution, every citizen must be given the right to equality.

“Indian constitution is liberal but the decision taken by the committee is against the fundamental rights of an individual’s opportunity as we are not getting equal opportunity and these six wrestlers are given special concession and benefits in the trials without any proper reason and it is highly opposable and objectionable.”

“We request you to reconsider this decision while keeping the rights, appeals, hope and future of all the talented emerging wrestlers in the account (sic).”

Manisha, winner of a bronze medal in the Asian Championship (Astana) and gold at the UWW Ranking Series event (Bishkek) this year, Pooja Gehlot, winner of a bronze medal at the Birmingham CWG along, along with 22 others, have signed the letter.

The signatories also include junior world championship bronze winner Ritika, U23 World Championship bronze winner Mansi, U23 Asian Championship silver medallist Rajni.

Talking to PTI, Manisha said, “There should be just one trial. They can beat us in competition and go to Asian Games. At least we will have satisfaction that they beat us. It is difficult to maintain weight. Two-stage trials is not acceptable.”

“Lot of athletes are with us. There should be fair trials,” she said.

Sarika, winner of bronze medal at the junior Asian Championship said, “If we have to protest or go to court, we are ready for everything. Wrestlers from Jalandhar, Sonepat, Jind and Hisar have also written letters to IOA and other authorities.”

Jagdish Dhanda, a coach at Sir Chhotu Ram Akhada in Rohtak also said that they will not accept any discrimination.

“From the first day we were opposing any such move. There are several junior and sub junior wrestlers who fear that it might happen to them also, so they have also come forward and signed the letter,” he said.

It is unclear if the six protesting wrestlers, who are in different parts of the world for training and competitions, will come back to India for trials this month.

  • India’s Bindyarani Devi wins silver at Asian Championships

India’s Bindyarani Devi wins silver at Asian Championships

    [ad_1]

Jinju: Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi was quick to make amends after an underwhelming performance in snatch section as she clinched an overall silver in the women’s 55kg competition at the Asian Championships here on Saturday.

The Commonwealth Games silver medallist had a total effort of 194kg (83kg+111kg), as she opened India’s medal tally in this edition of the championship.

Bindyarani also won the silver in the clean and jerk section. She was, however, competing in a non-Olympic weight category.

    MS Education Academy

“I’m happy with my performance today. I had injured my left knee before the trials. Once that was okay I had issues with my right one so my training was affected and I couldn’t give my best,” she told PTI.

“But today thanks to god my body was feeling good before the competition,” she added.

The Manipuri, who hasn’t been able to speak to her family back home due to the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, had two failed lifts — one each in snatch, and clean jerk. But a gold medal would have been out of her grasp even if she had completed those two lifts.

Chen Guan Ling of Chinese Taipei won the gold with a 204kg (90kg+114kg) effort while Vietnam’s Vo Thi Quynh Nhu 192kg (88kg+104kg) bagged the bronze in a depleted field.

The top lifters in 55kg have either bulked up or moved down weight classes in order to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics next year.

Bindyarani started off nicely, executing her first two snatch attempts of 80kg and 83kg with relative ease but her 85kg try was deemed a no lift. Her personal best in snatch is 86kg.

Placed fourth after the snatch event, the Manipuri covered ground by lifting the second highest weight in clean and jerk.

She, then, unsuccessfully, tried to improve her total with a 115kg lift. She had lifted 116kg at the Birmingham CWG last year.

The Manipuri was forced to switch back to her original 55kg weight division for this event due to an injury she sustained ahead of the selection trials.

She had moved to the 59kg weight class, that features in the Paris Olympics, during last year’s World Championships where she finished 25th.

Her performance here was not her best but head coach Vijay Sharma had said before the tournament that the aim was to make Bindyarani just participate in the event, which is one of the qualifiers of the Paris Olympics, and peak during the Asian Games later this year.

“Before the injury, I had improved my personal best but the injury affected my training and we wanted to take it easy. At the Asian Games, I will win gold for sure,” Bindyarani said.

Under the 2024 Olympic qualification rule, a lifter has to compulsorily compete in the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup.

Apart from the two above, a lifter also has to participate in three among the following additional events — the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championships.

Having competed here and in last year’s World Championships, both Mirabai Chanu and Bindyarani now need to take part in one other additional event, apart from the two compulsory ones.

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will publish the Olympic Qualification Rating (OQR) of each weight category at the end of the qualification period.

A weightlifter’s best three performances at the qualifying events will be taken into account for final assessment.

  • Mary Kom wants Asian Games to be her swansong, says ‘I’ll be forced to retire next year’

Mary Kom wants Asian Games to be her swansong, says ‘I’ll be forced to retire next year’

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: Racing against time to get fit, six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom is targeting the Asian Games as her swansong in the ring before she is “forced” to retire next year.

The veteran pugilist, who had torn her anterior cruciate ligament after twisting her left knee during the Commonwealth Games selection trials last year, underwent a reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL tear in August.

“What happened during the Commonwealth Games trials was very unfortunate. I suffered a major injury and I had to undergo a surgery,” Mary said at the unveiling of the Indian team jersey ahead of the women’s World Championship.

“I’m trying to come back soon. Because I have only this year, next year I’ll be forced to retire. So this year I want to compete in any competition before the retirement.”

According to the rules, the maximum participation age for a boxer is 40 years and the Manipuri will turn 41 in November.

“I don’t want to retire at all. I want to compete for the next five years, but above 40, we can’t compete, that is the rule.”

“My main (target) is the Asian Games, hopefully I will recover by then. I will have time for preparation also. It is my dream to compete once this year before retirement.”

The Asian Games, which were postponed last year, are set to be held from September 23 to October 8 this year.

However, in order to be selected for the marquee-event, the London Olympics bronze medallist will have to go through the new selection process, which requires a boxer to go through an evaluation test in the national camp.

“My recovery is going very well. Very soon I’ll be able to run and train. I’m trying my level best. If I’m able to compete then I will try to beat the boxers to get selection.

“But if I don’t get fit by the Asian Games then I want to compete in any other international competition once.”

Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh said, “We will fully support her recovery process and her desire to box again and from our side, we will try to give her a wonderful send-off.”

The Asian Games is also a qualifying event for the 2024 Olympics and if Mary wins then she will have earned a quota for the Paris Games where she will not be eligible to participate due to her age.

“May be the IBA president will allow me to compete (at the Olympics),” she jokingly commented.

Asked if she plans to turn pro post retirement, Mary said she hasn’t decided yet.

“Pro is also not easy. But the easy part is in one year there are only two or one competition and the money is more. Amateur and pro are different.”

Want 3 medals from India at the World Championship

The multiple-time World Championship gold medallist will not compete in this edition due to her recovery from the injury but she will serve as the event’s brand ambassador alongside Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar.

Having delivered year after year, Mary hopes the Indian contingent can bag three gold medals at home.

“I think India will win at least three golds. Since last many years, our girls are performing very well in international championship. This time we are hosting so why not,” said Mary, who won gold the previous two times India hosted the event in 2006 and 2018.

The BFI has announced hefty prize money for the tournament, with the gold medallist set to get USD 100,000, silver-medal winner USD 50,000 and bronze medallist USD 25,000.

But Mary warned the boxers to focus on their performance and not go after the money.

“You prove yourself in the ring, and money will come to you. If you are money-minded, you may not perform well. Attitude, arrogance and money can affect your training and preparation. Our performance should not suffer.”

Saudi Arabia: Asian woman working in men’s barber shop arrested

    [ad_1]

Riyadh: The authorities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) on Sunday announced the arrest of an Asian worker working in a men’s barber shop in the city of Al-Khobar in the Eastern Province, local media reported.

Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) spokesman Saad Al-Hammad said that the field control teams of the ministry’s branch in Al-Khobar arrested an Asian worker working in a men’s barber shop.

According to Arabic daily Sabq, he further said that ministry officials inspected the shop after they noticed a commercial advertisement stating that there was a female worker providing services to clients in the salon.

It is reported that, the violation was caught in accordance with the unified regulation of the work environment in the private sector and announced on the Ministry’s website mail.

The regulation stipulates that the employer may not employ women in facilities designated for men only, such as— men’s sports clubs, men’s barbershops, and others.

Al-Hammad stressed that the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) is following up the implementation of the unified regulation of the work environment in the private sector and monitoring violators.

He called on everyone to report any violation related to the regulations or violations of the labor system in general through the application of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD), which is available on smart phones.

  • Biden’s about to have a Cabinet opening. Asian American lawmakers have a favorite.

Biden’s about to have a Cabinet opening. Asian American lawmakers have a favorite.

    [ad_1]

This time, they’re hoping they can avoid a fight.

“It’s the first administration in 20 years without an [Asian American Pacific Islander] Cabinet secretary … This is the first chance they have to diversify the Cabinet,” Duckworth said. “So I’m waiting to see. Hopefully they will nominate her or an AAPI.”

The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus is already weighing in and endorsed Su Wednesday. In a statement, the caucus members presented her potential nomination as an opportunity for Biden “to better realize the ‘most diverse Cabinet in history.’”

Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.), who helped lead the Asian American caucus’ push for Su last time, called her a “no-brainer choice” for Biden.

Walsh is the first of Biden’s Cabinet secretaries slated to leave, creating a high profile vacancy for a Senate-confirmed position that’s already spurring intense behind-the-scenes jockeying. With a 51-seat majority in the upper chamber, Democrats can confirm whomever Biden nominates without needing GOP votes.

When it comes to GOP support, however, Su demonstrably lags Walsh, who got 18 Senate Republican votes when he was confirmed in March 2021. No Republicans voted to confirm Su to her current position, making her a likely more contentious pick if she’s tapped.

Su’s proponents argue that she’s most qualified to take the reins at the department, especially given her tenure there. And they tout her years of experience in high-ranking labor positions in California, as well as her earlier work representing low-wage and immigrant workers — including at a Los Angeles legal aid organization.

But during her confirmation hearing for deputy labor secretary, she faced questions about addressing fraud while she oversaw California’s unemployment insurance office, as well as her implementation of a controversial state law that redefined many gig workers as company employees.

Three Asian Americans currently serve in Cabinet-level positions for Biden: Vice President Kamala Harris, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Arati Prabhakar, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. But advocates for stronger Asian American representation emphasize that a Cabinet secretary role is different.

“We want to acknowledge that the Biden administration, by almost every measure, has been fantastic when it comes to AAPI inclusion within his administration,” said Gregg Orton, national director of the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans. “The one sort of glaring area for improvement is the fact that there isn’t an AAPI Cabinet secretary … This is a genuine opportunity to correct for that.”

For now, the Biden administration isn’t commenting on a Labor Department successor. Asked Wednesday about a potential replacement for Walsh, Senior Liaison Erika Moritsugu told reporters that Walsh had been tweeting during Tuesday’s State of the Union — where he stayed back as the “designated survivor” — and added: “We don’t have a vacancy at this moment. Nothing further on that.”

Su wouldn’t be the first Asian American woman to head up the Labor Department. Elaine Chao became the first female Asian American Cabinet secretary in 2001, leading the department for all eight years of George W. Bush’s administration. (Chao also later served as transportation secretary under former President Donald Trump.) Chris Lu, who was deputy labor secretary during President Barack Obama’s administration, was the first Asian American in the department’s number-two slot.

Su is widely viewed as the frontrunner, and her supporters include union leaders like American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten.

Another potential boost for Su: Biden may be reluctant to replace one white male secretary with another, given his administration’s stated commitment to diversity and the likelihood that such a move would rankle Senate Democrats. That amounts to a hurdle for union-friendly figures like Rep. Donald Norcross (D-N.J.) and former Rep. Andy Levin (D-Mich.), both of whose names were floated during the presidential transition in 2020 and who could get reconsidered now.

In addition, Levin is angling to become ambassador to Haiti, according to two people familiar with the situation who spoke candidly on condition of anonymity. Rep. Linda Sánchez (D-Calif.), a former labor lawyer, has also been floated for the Labor job, according to two different people familiar who also sought anonymity to speak candidly.

Walsh’s resume was a major selling point ahead of his initial selection, and some want Biden to consider other union leaders for the job. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), who would helm any confirmation hearing for Labor Secretary, named Association of Flight Attendants-CWA President Sara Nelson or Clinton-era Labor Secretary Robert Reich as potential candidates he would support.

But Rep. Bobby Scott (D-Va.), both an Asian American caucus member and the top Democrat on the Education and Workforce Committee, said Su “would be good.”

“She’s done well so far,” he added.

Sarah Ferris and Eleanor Mueller contributed to this report.

  • Saudi Arabia to host 2027 Asian Football Confederation’s Asian Cup

Saudi Arabia to host 2027 Asian Football Confederation’s Asian Cup

    [ad_1]

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Wednesday, announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) won the hosting of the 2027 Asian Nations Cup, for the first time in its history, since its inception in 1956.

This came during the work of the 33rd Congress of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which kicked off on Wednesday, February 1, in the Bahraini capital, Manama.

The Kingdom was the only bid presented at the Congress in Manama after India’s withdrawal in December 2022.

After the announcement, the Saudi Al-Ekhbariya channel quoted Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying, “This victory is an opportunity to create the future of football in the Kingdom and the continent of Asia, and we look forward with determination to open new horizons for Asian football.”

The Saudi Minister of Sports, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, expressed, in a speech on the occasion, his country’s welcome to the countries of Asia in 2027, stressing that “the Kingdom is making great strides in hosting the largest international sporting events.”

The Saudi Arabia 2027 committee concerned with the Saudi file to host the 2027 Asian Nations Cup on Wednesday revealed the new and developed stadiums that will be worked on to host the tournament.

On October 17, the AFC Executive Committee selected a shortlist of those wishing to host the continental event held once every four years, which included Saudi Arabia and India, but the final decision to be made by the General Assembly, postponed it until early February.

The Kingdom obtained the vote of 43 countries to organize the 2027 Asian Nations Cup out of 45 votes, and Palestine and Turkmenistan abstained from voting.

It is noteworthy that Qatar will host the next edition of the Asian Cup, from June 26 to July 16, 2023.
