CPI (M) MP John Brittas summoned by Vice prez over ‘anti-Amit Shah’ article

    [ad_1]

A show-cause notice has been served to Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP John Brittas by the Vice President of India and Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankar on Sunday over an article criticizing Union Home Minister Amit Shah for outbursts against Kerala.

Brittas’s critical article – Perils of Propaganda – on Shah was published by The Indian Express on February 20.

The summon was made based on a complaint by the general secretary of Kerala’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) P Sudheer.

    MS Education Academy

Confirming the news, Brittas said it was the Centre’s tactics to silence dissent.

“Yes, I was called for a meeting over an article I wrote and I explained sufficiently my position on the issue. I told the Rajya Sabha chairman that writing the article was my fundamental right and part of my freedom of expression. If a cryptic remark can be made on Kerala, I am fully free to respond,” Brittas said.

Brittas had written over a remark by Shah while touring Karnataka in February that the saffron party is the only hope to keep the country safe. “There is Kerala near you. I don’t want to say much,” Shah had remarked.

“Shah’s periodic outbursts targeting Kerala are proof of his desperation as well as his attempt to turn India into a Hindu Rashtra and rewind this country to a past with the Manu Smriti replacing the Constitution. Kerala has tirelessly resisted his party’s designs,” Brittas mentioned in his article.

  • Judge tosses Devin Nunes suit over Esquire article

Judge tosses Devin Nunes suit over Esquire article

    [ad_1]

    congress worldwide threats 55125

Lizza, the veteran political reporter who authored the article, joined POLITICO in 2019 as Chief Washington Correspondent and a co-author of POLITICO Playbook.

In the 101-page opinion issued Tuesday, Williams said evidence developed during the litigation showed that the farm employed numerous workers who provided names and Social Security numbers that did not match Social Security Administration records.

“This Court ordered the SSA to verify the SSNs of all disclosed NuStar Farms employees,” Williams said. “Of those employees who NuStar plaintiffs employed on or before September 30, 2018, 243 of 319 employees’ names, dates of birth, and SSNs did not match SSA records.”

Williams also said there was testimony and evidence that the farm was warned about such mismatches, accepted expired credentials and did not properly complete forms designed to verify that workers were authorized to work in the U.S.

Six NuStar employees subpoenaed by Hearst and asked to produce identification and work authorization documents ultimately invoked their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, the judge wrote.

Williams also noted that NuStar has never used the Department of Homeland Security’s voluntary program to check workers’ eligibility for employment, e-Verify.

In a deposition in the case, Nunes — who stepped down from Congress last year to become CEO of Trump’s social media venture, Trump Media & Technology Group — called e-Verify a failed program, said it does not work and is discriminatory, the judge said. But Williams noted that Nunes praised the same program during a 2019 Fox News interview and suggested it should be mandatory.

“It’s worked really, really well,” Nunes said. “And that means, if everybody was certified by the government that everybody working for you is, in fact, here on a legal permit, that in the long run is great.”

An attorney who represents Nunes, his relatives and the farm, Steven Biss, did not respond to a message seeking comment on the ruling.

Nunes could appeal the judge’s ruling to the St. Louis-based 8th Circuit Court of Appeals.

In 2020, Williams dismissed Nunes’ suit against Lizza and Hearst. However, an 8th Circuit panel reinstated that case by ruling that it was possible Lizza republished his story by tweeting it out in 2019.

In his new decision, Williams said Nunes hadn’t produced evidence to support the notion that the 2019 tweet amounted to republishing the story

Lizza declined to comment on the ruling.

A spokesperson for Hearst did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The suits against Hearst and Lizza were part of a flurry of at least 10 lawsuits Nunes filed beginning in 2019 against media organizations, journalists and critics he accused of defaming him. The most famous suit sought $250 million from Twitter, Democratic political strategist Liz Mair and anonymous figures operating Twitter accounts labeled as “Devin Nunes’ Mom” and “Devin Nunes’ Cow.”

A Virginia judge dismissed Twitter from the case in 2020 and the remainder of the complaint last year.

  • Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

Modi popular among Chinese netizens, nicknamed ‘Modi the immortal’: Article

    [ad_1]

Beijing: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reverentially called ‘Modi Laoxian’ meaning ‘Modi the immortal’ by Chinese netizens, a rare respectful reference to an international leader, notwithstanding the bitter India-China border row, according to an article published in the US-based strategic affairs magazine The Diplomat.

In the article – ‘How is India viewed in China?’, Mu Chunshan, a journalist known for analysing Chinese social media, especially Sina Weibo, (akin to Twitter in China), also said that most Chinese feel that India led by Modi can maintain a balance among major countries in the world. Sina Weibo has over 582 million active users.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has an unusual nickname on the Chinese internet: Modi Laoxian. Laoxian refers to an elderly immortal with some weird abilities. The nickname implies that Chinese netizens think Modi is different even more amazing than other leaders,” he said.

They point to both his dress and physical appearance, seen as Laoxian-like, and some of his policies, which are different from India’s previous ones, Mu said.

On India’s relations with other major countries, he said, whether it is Russia, the United States, or Global South countries, India can enjoy friendly ties with all of them, which is “very admirable” to some Chinese netizens.

“So the word ‘Laoxian’ reflects the complex sentiment of Chinese people toward Modi, combining curiosity, astonishment, and perhaps a dash of cynicism,” Mu wrote.

“I have been doing international media reports for nearly 20 years and it is rare for Chinese netizens to give a nickname to a foreign leader. Modi’s nickname stands out above all others. Clearly, he has made an impression on Chinese public opinion,” he said.

Besides hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping and former Premier Li Keqiang, since he came to power in 2014, Modi also held two rare informal summits with Xi, 69, in Wuhan and later in Mamallapuram near Chennai, which raised expectations of improvement in the relations between the two Asian giants.

The Sino-Indian relations hit the bottom following aggressive military actions by the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh violating the agreements to resolve the border dispute leading to a nearly three-year-long military standoff.

The two countries have held 17 rounds of high-level military commanders’ talks to resolve the standoff.

India has been maintaining that ties with China cannot be normal unless there is peace in the border areas.

Modi is also well known in China as he interacted with the Chinese public through his account on Sina Weibo which he opened in 2015 and had over 2.44 lakh followers.

However, he quit Weibo in July 2020 after the Indian government moved to ban 59 Chinese Apps to send a “strong message at the border, on the economic front and at a personal level too,” according to BJP general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh.

In his article, Mu says Chinese views of India are very complicated but generally based on a sense of superiority and self-confidence.

Significantly, he writes that the Chinese netizens believe China’s attempts to use its “all-weather ally”, Pakistan as “unrealistic” as the gap between the two South Asian neighbours is “getting wider”, an apparent reference to the political and economic meltdown Pakistan is currently experiencing.

“The facts over the past nine years have proved that China and India have more room for cooperation. For example, China’s trade with India is worth USD115 billion a year far more than China’s trade with Pakistan, which sits at around USD 30 billion”, Mu wrote.

“Of course, China has not forgotten Pakistan. But many Chinese netizens have a realistic view of the two South Asian neighbours. The argument is very sober: The idea of using Pakistan to restrain India is becoming more unrealistic because the gap between Pakistan and India is getting wider”, he said.

He also writes about Chinese apprehension about India’s growing popularity with western countries, especially with the US and New Delhi’s handling of the Ukraine crisis without disrupting its close ties with Russia and America.

“This is just one example of a widespread perception in China: India is the favourite of the West, while China has become the target of the West. How did India manage this? Why is India’s circle of international friends so big?” was the question debated by the Chinese netizens.

Most Chinese people feel a sense of superiority and self-confidence vis-a-vis India and of course, most Chinese people don’t like to see India get too close to the United States, but they also think China and India can still cooperate, the article said.

Twitter can’t seek protection under Article 19: Centre to Karnataka HC

    [ad_1]

Bengaluru: The Centre has submitted to the Karnataka High Court that American microblogging platform Twitter cannot take protection under Article 19 of the Constitution which ensures freedom of speech and expression.

The Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and expression to Indian citizens and not to foreigners and foreign entities, the Additional Solicitor General (South) R. Sankaranarayanan representing the central government submitted to the High Court on Thursday.

Twitter had challenged the blocking orders by the central government between February 2, 2021 and February 28, 2022. The American microblogging platform alleged that the orders “are arbitrary”.

“Twitter can’t seek protection under Article 19 as it is a foreign company. There is nothing arbitrary under Article 14, and Section 69 (A) is properly followed,” stated Additional Solicitor General, and urged the court not to give any relief to Twitter.

The matter has been adjourned to April 10.

  • Stone Pelting, Protests Ended In Kashmir After Article 370’s Abrogation: Amit Shah

Stone Pelting, Protests Ended In Kashmir After Article 370’s Abrogation: Amit Shah

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that stone pelting has stopped in Kashmir and now there are theaters running and tourists visiting the Valley.

“There used to be stone pelting and violence in Kashmir but now these things have stopped. There are theatres running and 1.8 crore tourists have visited the Valley in a year,” he said while speaking at an event in Nagpur, Maharashtra.

Shah said when Article 370 of the Constitution of India granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir was abrogated, speeches were made in Parliament that blood will flow in Kashmir. But no one even pelted a single stone, leave aside the pool of blood, he asserted.

The Home Minister said the country has seen an 80 per cent reduction in violence in Kashmir, insurgency in the Northeast and left-wing extremism under the Narendra Modi Government.

“Today, I can say that there has been an 80 per cent reduction in violence in Kashmir, insurgency in the Northeast and left-wing extremism under the Modi Government,” he said.

The Home Minister said visiting of 1.8 crore tourists in the Kashmir Valley in one year is a “big thing”.

There had been investments worth Rs 12,000 crore in Kashmir in 70 years but under the Modi Government, it has got Rs 12,000 crore in just three years, he said.

“Each home in Kashmir has been provided with tap water and electricity, which is a huge change,” Shah said.

Insurgency has significantly come down in the Northeast, he said, stressing that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), a controversial statute, has been withdrawn from about 60 per cent of the area in the Northeast.

PM Modi’s vision is to see India at the top in the world, said the Minister.
Explaining the three big aims of ‘Amrit Kaal’, the 25-year period culminating in the centenary of India’s independence, mooted by PM Modi, Shah said the first goal is to showcase the sacrifices of freedom fighters before the present generation.

The second aim is to bring before the people the progress made by the country in the past 75 years, while the third aim is to ensure that India reaches the top in all sectors in the next 25 years, said the Home Minister.

He said India is becoming “atmanirbhar” in defence production – with 70 per cent self-reliance – and asserted that the country is turning into a manufacturing hub in the world under Modi.

The Government has been taking decisions that are beneficial to the people, he said, adding that India will be leading the world in hydrogen production in two to three years.

“Similarly, India will be way ahead in the field of satellites in four to five years,” he said.
Indian start-ups are also proving their mettle to the world, he said.

People have realised after demolition drive how Article 370 protected J&K: Mehbooba

    [ad_1]

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have now come to realise how Article 370 of the Constitution acted as a protective shield for them, after the BJP-led government used bulldozers to demolish houses and businesses of the poor.

She also defended her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s decision to join hands with the BJP to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir after the 2014 Assembly polls, saying the PDP patriarch had successfully “caged the beast”.

“When Article 370 was abrogated, some people thought it would only affect the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the National Conference (NC). When the bulldozers came to demolish our homes, businesses and even the shelters for our domestic animals, people realised how Article 370 was a protection for us,” Mufti said at a function of her party here.

Defending Sayeed’s decision to ally with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for government formation after the 2014 Assembly polls, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said her father had caged the beast and stopped it from wreaking havoc.

“No one understands that Mufti sahib had caged the beast. He had caged the BJP,” she said.

Mufti said after winning three seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the PDP had expected to win 43 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but won only 28, while the BJP bagged 25 seats in Jammu.

“It took Mufti sahib three months (to form the government). We have been accused of bringing the BJP into Jammu and Kashmir but how would one stop them? They had the majority in Parliament, they won the majority in Jammu and also, two seats in Kupwara.

“Mufti sahib grabbed the BJP’s hand so that he could stop them. For one year, Mufti sahib was the chief minister and I was the chief minister for two years. We implemented our agenda, the Jammu and Kashmir agenda,” she said.

Mufti claimed that she would have continued to be the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir even today had she followed the BJP’s line. “Since I did not, they pulled out of the government,” she said.

  • Supreme Court To Consider Early Hearing Of Pleas Challenging Article 370 Abrogation

Supreme Court To Consider Early Hearing Of Pleas Challenging Article 370 Abrogation

    [ad_1]

SRINAGAR:  The petitions challenging the nullification of Article 370 of the Constitution could be taken up for hearing soon as Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Friday said he would take a call on their listing.

“I will take a call on it,” according to newspaper The Tribune the CJI told senior advocate Raju Ramachandran who mentioned the matter and sought listing of petitions against doing away with Article 370 which gave a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir that also used to include Ladakh.

Earlier, the CJI had said that he would examine and give a date for listing of petitions, challenging abolition of Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories, which have been hanging fire for more than three years.

On September 23 last year, CJI Chandrachud’s predecessor Justice UU Lalit had agreed to take up these petitions after the 2022 Dussehra vacation but the matter hasn’t been taken up for hearing so far.

The Supreme Court had on February 13 dismissed a petition challenging notifications for delimitation of assembly constituencies in the newly created Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, saying “there is absolutely no merit in any of the contentions raised by the petitioners”.

A Bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice AS Oka had, however, clarified that it had not ruled on the validity of the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which is pending before another Bench.

The top court had on August 28, 2019 referred petitions challenging Presidential Orders nullifying Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into union territories to a five-judge Constitution Bench. In March 2020, it had refused to refer it to a larger Bench of seven judges.

There are around two dozen petitions challenging the Presidential Order nullifying Article 370, including those by Delhi-based advocate ML Sharma, Jammu and Kashmir-based lawyer Shakir Shabir, National Conference Lok Sabha MPs Mohammad Akbar Lone and Justice Hasnain Masoodi (retd), bureaucrat-turned-politician Shah Faesal and his party colleague Shehla Rashid.

There is another PIL filed by former interlocutor for Jammu and Kashmir Radha Kumar, Air Vice Marshal Kapil Kak (retd), Major General Ashok Mehta (retd), and former IAS officers Hindal Haidar Tyabji, Amitabha Pande and Gopal Pillai, who have urged the top court to declare the August 5 Presidential Orders “unconstitutional, void and inoperative”.

As the petitions didn’t get listed after March 2, 2020, former Jammu and Kashmir MLA Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami had moved the Supreme Court in August last year seeking an early hearing of petitions challenging the validity of abrogation of special status of the erstwhile state.
