Congress’s Pawan Khera arrested on complaint by Assam BJP leader: Police

    [ad_1]

Guwahati: A police case was registered against senior Congress leader Pawan Khera in Dima Hasao district of Assam for his alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and a team has already been sent to New Delhi for a probe, a senior officer said on Thursday.

The Congress leader was on Thursday arrested by the Assam Police after a complaint was lodged by Hen Samuel Changsan against Khera at Haflong police station.

Khera was apprehended at New Delhi airport before being released on interim bail by Supreme Court.

Dima Hasao Superintendent of Police Mayank Kumar told PTI that Changsan filed a complaint against Khera on Wednesday for his comments on PM Modi and other issues.

Changsan is a BJP leader and currently an Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council.

“His (Khera) comments against the PM form one part of the FIR. There are other complaints also. The case was registered yesterday under several sections of the IPC,” the SP said.

Kumar said a police team has already gone to New Delhi to investigate the case.

Changsan in his complaint alleged that Khera’s remarks at a press meet on February 17 were not only “insulting, defamatory and derogatory” to Modi and his deceased father, but also “provocative” to BJP workers and the PM’s followers.

The complainant also alleged that Khera’s remarks were “a part of a wider conspiracy to degrade and destabilise our nation by defaming and disreputing the person, who is holding a high constitutional post as Prime Minister of India”.

The Congress leader also “intentionally” caused a “breach of public peace, with an intent to incite violence and disturb peace and tranquility in the society” and the statements were made to “cause public mischief”, the FIR alleged.

He said in the complaint that there is an “intent to discredit and destabilise the nation by disreputing the Prime Minister of our country which can also be seen as a part of that deep-rooted conspiracy by certain vested and interested circle of which Khera is a part”.

Reacting strongly to the police action, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah criticised the Assam Police and the ruling BJP.

“What sort of high-handedness is this? Is there any rule of law? On what grounds is this being done and under whose order?” asked the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President.

In a similar manner, Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani, an Independent MLA then, was arrested by Assam Police on April 19 last year from Palanpur in Gujarat and was brought to the border district Kokrajhar in the Northeastern state for tweeting against the Prime Minister.

As soon as he was granted bail in the case, he was immediately rearrested on April 25, 2022, in a case in Barpeta district of Assam on a complaint by a woman police officer alleging that she was assaulted by Mevani while being taken to Kokrajhar by a posse of police personnel in a vehicle from Guwahati airport.

Giving bail to the Gujarat politician, the Barpeta District and Sessions Court had pulled up the Assam Police for lodging a “false FIR” and urged the Gauhati High Court to direct the state police force to “reform itself”.

The Gauhati High Court later stayed the observations made in the Barpeta court’s bail order on Mevani.

Asansol BJP leader denied anticipatory bail by HC, likely to be arrested

    [ad_1]

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday refused to grant anticipatory bail to BJP leader and councillor of the Asansol Municipal Corporation Chaitali Tiwari and three others in a case relating to a stampede during a blanket distribution ceremony in Asansol on December 14, 2022. Three people had died in the stampede.

The police had brought charges against Tiwari and the others on the basis of a complaint by the son of one of the victims. Tiwari, who is also the leader of the opposition in the Asansol Municipal Corporartion, had then moved the High Court, praying for quashing of the charges.

She also moved another bench of the court, praying for anticipatory bail.

While the High Court refused to quash the charges against her, it did grant her protection from arrest till the bench decided her anticipatory bail plea.

Among the accusations against Tiwari and the others was that they issued coupons for 6,000 blankets but purchased only 3,000.

They were apparently aware that the venue could not accommodate so many people.

It has also been alleged that they faked a permission letter from the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) and even produced it in court to obtain a favourable order.

Senior advocate Sekhar Kr. Basu, appeared for the petitioners and submitted that they had no role to play in the whole incident.

He also maintained that a local electrician had been engaged to obtain the permission from WBSEDCL and he was the one responsible for the fake document.

Advocate Phiroze Edulji, appearing for the de-facto complainant, countered these submissions and pointed out that no police permission was sought for the event and the organisers, including Tiwari, continued to distribute blankets even as the stampede took place.

They also attempted to mislead the judiciary by producing a fake permission letter and deserve no relief, he submitted. The state also opposed the anticipatory bail prayers.

After hearing all sides, the bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi turned down the petitioners’ prayers for anticipatory bail.

The court did not pass any order on the merits of the case though.

Three arrested on charges of killing cow in Bhopal; NSA to be slapped on them

    [ad_1]

Bhopal: Police have arrested three men on charges of killing a cow in Bhopal, an official said on Wednesday, as local authorities demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of one of them and moved to invoke the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the trio.

The alleged incident occurred on Tuesday in Paras Nagar under Gandhi Nagar police station limits of the Madhya Pradesh capital.
Gandhi Nagar Police Station in-charge Arun Sharma informed that following a tip off, a police team reached the spot and spotted three persons with a blood-stained sharp-edged weapon.

Remains of the slaughtered cow were also found at the spot, he said.

The trio tried to flee the site of the crime after seeing the police team. The police, however, caught them and during interrogation they admitted to killing the bovine, Sharma said.

The three men — identified as Imran (30), Irshad (28) and Javed (30) — were booked and arrested under provisions of the state’s anti-cow slaughter law — Madhya Pradesh Govansh Vadh Pratishedh Adhiniyam and — also the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, said the police officer.

He said process of invoking the National Security Act (NSA) against the accused has been initiated.

The NSA allows the government to detain people for up to one year without a trial if they suspect that they could disrupt public order or endanger the security of India.

After the incident, the Bhopal administration demolished “illegal” constructions at the house of Irshad on Wednesday, he said.

Local MLA Rameshwar Sharma termed the cow killing incident as unfortunate and said this was a serious issue as intention of these people could be to trigger communal tension.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator said he has asked the police to find out if more people were involved in the incident.
“I have asked the police and administration to take strict action in the matter,” he said.

Pakistani girl who was arrested for illegally staying in India returns home, says family

    [ad_1]

Karachi: A minor Pakistani girl who went missing from her home in Hyderabad city in the southern Sindh province last September and was arrested from Bengaluru in January has returned back, her family said on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as Iqra Jeevani, entered India in September through the porous India-Nepal border. She married a 25-year-old security guard from Uttar Pradesh, whom she met through a gaming app.

The girl’s father, Sohail Jeewani, said they had already gone through a lot of pain and embarrassment and just wanted to move on.

“I don’t want her or anyone else in my family to speak on this issue. What has happened has happened. Yes I confirm she has been returned to us and we are leaving from Lahore tonight,” Sohail told PTI over phone before hanging up.

The girl’s case has garnered a lot of attention in both countries after she was recovered by the Indian authorities in January in Bengaluru.

Iqra, who is 16 years of age, left her home in Shahi Bazar in Hyderabad for her college – Federal Government Girls College – on September 19, 2022 and was found four months later in Bengaluru when police arrested a young boy she was living with.

It transpired she had developed a friendship and then relationship with the Indian man, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and apparently married him.

“She had called us from India in early January to inform us she was safe and married to this Indian man,” her uncle Afzal Jeewani said.

A senior police official said the family informed them about the call and they got in touch through required channels with the Pakistan foreign office who then contacted their Indian counterparts to help find and recover the girl.

A few days after her contact, she was arrested along with her purported husband.

Afzal claimed that the Indian man had deceived his niece by posing as a Muslim boy when the two met on social media while playing online Ludo games.

According to reports, Bengaluru police arrested Yadav, accusing him of bringing a Pakistani girl to India after befriending her.

Iqra was subsequently handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office officials, who later remanded her to a state home for women.

She was handed over to the Pakistani authorities on Sunday at the Wagah border.
