Barpeta: Three leaders of the proscribed Popular Front of India (PFI) and Campus Front of India (CFI) were arrested by Assam police from Barpeta Road Railway station, police said on Saturday.

Two of the three arrested are top leaders of PFI and one of CFI, superintendent of police Amitabh Sinha told reporters here.

The trio were arrested from the railway station on Thursday night when they arrived there by train from Delhi, he said.

The CFI leader was identified to be its national treasurer Jahidul Islam while the PFI leaders are its Assam secretary Jakir Hussain and state president Abu Sama, Sinha said.

The police also seized Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and several documents from them, the SP said.

Sinha said that the trio had fled from the state after both the outfits were banned in September 2022 and were continuing their activities from outside Assam.

Police was on their trail for long and the three are being interrogated to ascertain the reason for their visit, he said.

Islam and Hussain were residents of Baksa district, while Sama hails from Barpeta.

A total 36 PFI activists were arrested from different parts of the state and New Delhi during a national crackdown against the outfit in September. It led to a ban on the outfit the same month.

The organisation was found to be active in the minority-dominated districts, particularly in the char (riverine) areas, since 2014 when its activists began helping people from the community in filing documents for inclusion of their names in the National Register of Citizens.

Prior to that, they were found to be mainly involved in educational activities in the riverine areas of Bengali-speaking Muslim dominated areas.

PFI shot into prominence in the state during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and some of their activists were also arrested during the stir for alleged stone-pelting in the state.

The CFI is the student wing of PFI. PFI, CFI and seven other associated outfits were banned by the Centre for unlawful activities in September, 2022.

Fake PMO official arrested in J&K to be brought to Gujarat

    [ad_1]

Ahmedabad: Conman Kiran Patel, who was arrested in Jammu and Kashmir last month for posing as a top official in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), is likely to be brought to Ahmedabad on Friday night, an official said.

A team of Ahmedabad Police has reached Jammu and Kashmir to take custody of Patel, according to a senior official.

Four FIRs related to cheating have been registered against Patel in different police stations in Gujarat.

    MS Education Academy

“Our team is in Jammu and Kashmir to take Kiran Patel’s custody in a cheating case registered with us. He will be brought here on Friday night,” a senior police officer said.

Kiran Patel and his wife, Malini Patel, were accused of attempting to usurp a senior citizen’s bungalow.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch registered a case of cheating against them on March 22, six days after Malini Patel was arrested.

The complainant, Jagdish Chavda, had wanted to sell his bungalow in the Shilaj area. Patel approached Chavda claiming to be a real estate agent and persuaded him to renovate the property, claiming that it would fetch a good price.

To gain Chavda’s trust, Patel allegedly claimed to be a “Class-1 officer in the PMO” and a partner in a cafe chain.

Chavda agreed to the renovation, and Kiran along with his wife Malini, and an interior designer took Rs 35 lakh in instalments from him for the work.

When the renovation was underway, Chavda shifted to his friend’s residence.

A few days later, he learned that Patel and his wife had put up their own name-plate outside the bungalow and had conducted a house-warming ritual as if they were the owners.

When confronted, the couple left the bungalow without finishing the renovation, and Chavda moved back into the house.

In August 2022, Chavda received a court notice informing him that Kiran Patel had filed a civil suit claiming ownership of the property using photographs of his nameplate and invitation card for the house-warming ceremony, said the FIR.

  • Donald Trump becomes first former US President to be arrested

Donald Trump becomes first former US President to be arrested

    [ad_1]

New York: Former President Donald Trump surrendered on Tuesday at a local court here, making history as the first former holder of the US’ highest office to be arrested.

He will now face charges stemming from a payoff to a porn star to buy her silence.

After he was booked like a common crime suspect — except he was not handcuffed or paraded around — he was waiting to be taken before New York State’s Acting Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan to be formally charged.

    MS Education Academy

Given his status, the arrest took place under the watchful eye of the Secret Service that is charged with protecting former presidents making it an odd scenario.

Trump came in a convoy from his Trump Tower penthouse four miles away to the building housing the local courts as his supporters and opponents held separate rallies.

He was taken in through a side entrance.

Trump became the first former President to be arrested and face a trial in the nation’s 246-year history, plunging the US into unchartered legal and political territory.

He is also a candidate for next year’s presidential election, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination, and only two per cent behind President Joe Biden in an aggregation of polls by RealClear Politics.

Trump is facing charges relating to a payoff he allegedly made before the 2016 election through his former lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels who claimed to have had an affair with him in 2006.

Cohen was convicted in a federal court in connection with the $130,000 payoffs and sentenced to three years. Federal prosecutors declined to prosecute Trump.

Cohen is the prime witness in the local New York case.

The charges, handed down by a grand jury – a panel of citizens convened to decide if there was a prima facie case – are under seal and will be unsealed shortly in court.

Since hush money payments and extra-martial affairs are not illegal, it is likely that the charges will be about bookkeeping irregularities in how they were recorded and if they can be made out to be in violation of campaign finance laws.

Some leaks reported by the media have said that Trump will be bludgeoned with over two dozen charges, some of them serious criminal allegations or felonies with a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

In a social media post, Trump asked Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg to charge himself for violating the laws against disclosure of a sealed indictment before it is released in court.

Trump’s lawyers have said that he will fight the charges at the trial that will be months away.

Bragg, a Democrat elected prosecutor in a partisan election, is to hold a news conference in the afternoon after Trump is produced before Merchan, whom Trump had personally attacked saying, “He hates me”.

Trump is scheduled to fly back to his home in Mar-a-Lago in Florida on his private Boeing 757 after his arraignment in court and hold a meeting there later.

The city was under a blanket of heavy security with police on the alert.

Areas around Trump Towers and the courthouses were barricaded with steel fences and police buses.

Screaming protesters trading insults across a barrier were kept apart by police.

Trump had warned of “potential death and destruction” after the indictment was announced on Thursday.

The protest outside the courthouse was called by a right-wing Republican member of the House of Representatives, Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is known for her extreme rhetoric, drawing a warning from Mayor Eric Adams, “”When you’re in town, be on your best behaviour”.

Greene’s speech was drowned out by anti-Trump protesters.

So far, the protests have been in a carnival atmosphere with even a dancing semi nude anti-Trump protester shouting foul-mouthed challenges to him.

There was no rioting like the attack on Congress in January 2021 by his supporters buying into Trump’s claims that President Biden had “stolen” the election.
