Jeddah: Amidst possibility of arrest and deportation to back home India as reported by a section of Indian media, prominent Islamic preacher, Dr. Zakir Naik is hectically busy in Oman delivering lectures.

While there is buzz about his arrest, fugitive Islamic preacher had also posted a video on his Facebook page, informing his supporters that he had safely arrived in Oman on Wednesday

He also expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Oman for extending a warm welcome to him, according to Malaysian Media reports.

Zakir Naik in Oman to deliver two religious lectures on the invitation of the Omani Government.

His lawyer, Akberdin Abdul Kader in Malaysia, has refuted recent news reports suggesting that the Islamic preacher was going to be arrested in Oman and extradited to India.

Akberdin said Zakir had in fact been given a state reception in Muscat, the capital city of Oman, according to media reports.

“He texted me to say he was safe and staying at a hotel,” media reports quoted lawyer Akberdin saying.

Akberdin further said Zakir had described reports of his alleged arrest as nothing more than “fabricated news” by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government-controlled media.

The fugitive Islamic preacher, who freely and frequently travels to the Gulf states. Lastly, he was in Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup to deliver religious lectures.

Zakir Naik was accorded the 2015 King Faisal International Prize (KFIP) for his “Service to Islam” by Saudi Arabia. He was also conferred Sharjah Award for Voluntary Work and the Dubai International Holy Quran Award–Islamic Personality of the Year in 2013.

Dr. Naik is wanted for inciting communal hatred, money laundering, and terror funding. His sermons and speeches are broadcast on Peace TV, banned in India, Canada, UK, and Bangladesh.

On 18 July 2017, India revoked Dr. Naik’s passport following a recommendation made by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).  He has been pronounced a fugitive since then, he has been living in Putrajaya town in Malaysia and holds permanent residency in the country.

Revanth Reddy, other Congress leaders placed under house arrest

    [ad_1]

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress president A. Revanth Reddy and other party leaders were placed under house arrest on Friday to prevent them from joining a protest at Osmania University over Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC) exams question paper leak.

Revanth Reddy was detained at his house in Jubilee Hills ahead of Vidyarthi Nirudyoga Maha Nirasana Deeksha or protest by students and unemployed at Arts College on Osmania University campus. Large number of police personnel were deployed outside his residence and barricades were erected to prevent him from leaving his residence.

The protest was planned by the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee. Police, however, denied permission for the same.

Police have also placed under house arrest other Congress leaders like Mallu Ravi, Addanki Dayakar and leaders of JAC.

Revanth Reddy took to Twitter to condemn the house arrest. He said instead of sending police to house arrest him, Chief Minister KCR and minister KTR should come forward for a debate on the question paper leak in the presence of Osmania University students.

Revanth Reddy, who is also a Member of Parliament, said: “If CM KCR and KTR have no role in paper leak, they should accept his challenge.”

TPCC spokesman Addanki Dayakar condemned the police action. He alleged that the BRS government was trying to muzzle the voice of opposition. He slammed the government for placing Congress leaders under house arrest for a second consecutive day.

Several Congress leaders were kept under house arrest on Thursday to prevent them from joining Revanth Reddy during the latter’s appearance before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is probing the TSPSC paper leak case.

The SIT had summoned Revanth Reddy to provide evidence in support of certain allegations made by him in the paper leak case.

  • Gun rights hearing turns chaotic amid arrest of Parkland parent

Gun rights hearing turns chaotic amid arrest of Parkland parent

“You’re removed. You’re breaching protocol and disorder in the committee room,” Fallon told Patricia Oliver, as she continued to speak about her son, who was killed in the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. After Joaquin Oliver’s death, his parents co-founded a gun reform group and have previously staged civil disobedience actions.

After the Olivers were removed by Capitol Police from the Rayburn hearing room, two officers pinned Manuel Oliver to the ground in the process of making an arrest, putting his face on the floor.

“Back up or you’ll go to jail next,” one officer shouted at Patricia, in response to her speaking to the officers and leaning over the arrest, according to video of the incident. The second officer kicked Patricia away. Patricia eventually made her way back into the committee room while the panel was called into recess.

“It was really awful,” said Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) “They took them out of the room, and there was a sound like there was some big scuffle in the hallway.”

Fallon, who chaired the committees’ joint hearing on the Second Amendment, said it was unclear to him why the Oliver arrest occurred. He described hearing “a lot of ruckus” in the hallway from his position on the dais.

Then, during the panel’s brief recess, Cicilline and Fallon had a verbal altercation over the Olivers’ removal — a clash that Fallon described as more of “an intellectual exercise.”

The Democrat, however, maintained in an interview after the hearing that during the break Patricia Oliver had the right to “speak as loudly as she wants.”

Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) tweeted his disappointment with how the scene played out, accusing Fallon of “escalating” the situation and saying the Olivers should have gotten a warning. (Immediate removal is standard practice for disruptive attendees at congressional hearings.)

Frost ran out of the hearing and witnessed the arrest of Manuel Oliver, asking “what’s going on here?” and being repeatedly told to “get back sir” by the police.

The first-term lawmaker and gun safety activist, who got his start in the wake of the Parkland shooting in his home state, declined to comment following the arrest.

“Anyone who disrupts a Congressional hearing and disregards a law enforcement officer’s orders to stop are going to be arrested,” Capitol Police spokesperson Tim Barber said in a statement to POLITICO.

Capitol Police say that Manuel Oliver refused to stop shouting and attempted to get back into the hearing room, which resulted in the arrest. He was not put in jail, but cited and released.

Patricia Oliver was not arrested, according to the Capitol Police, “because she followed the lawful directions of our officers.”

Fallon said he would look into if any lawmakers encouraged Patricia Oliver to reenter the committee room, saying that such a move could “lead to censure that could lead to removal from committees.”

Nicholas Wu and Olivia Beavers contributed.

NIA makes second arrest in NGO terror funding case

    [ad_1]

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday arrested Khurram Parvez, the programme coordinator of Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Societies (JKCCS), and the chairperson of Philippines-based NGO Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD), in connection with an NGO terror funding case.

Earlier, the NIA had arrested a J&K-based journalist, Irfan Mehraj, from Srinagar connection with the same case.

“Investigation has revealed that Khurram Parvez was collecting funds under the garb of fighting for human rights from various international entities and channelising the same for funding terror activities in the Kashmir Valley. He, along with his associates, was also propagating secessionist agenda through his various NGOs.

Khurram Parvez has already been chargesheeted in another NIA case. He was formally arrested upon production in this case on Wednesday,” the NIA said.

The case relates to terror funding of proscribed terrorist organisations, such as Lashkar-e-Toiba(LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, by certain NGOs, trusts and societies based out of the Valley.

Investigation has revealed that Khurram Parvez and his associates raised funds to support individuals who were involved in stone pelting on security forces and also motivated others to extend similar support.

These trusts and societies, which have been under investigation, have utilised the funds raised by them to publish anti-national and incriminating materials to cause hatred and disaffection towards the Government of India.

  • Kashmir Journalist’s Arrest: PCI, EGI Seek Immediate Release

Kashmir Journalist’s Arrest: PCI, EGI Seek Immediate Release

    [ad_1]

    by Raashid Andrabi

SRINAGAR: A day after the arrest of journalist Irfan Mehraj by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), various media groups and human rights watchdogs have called for his immediate release. The political class is also seeing his release.

The Press Club of India expressed its strong disapproval of the application of the UAPA to journalists and expressed concern over the NIA’s arrest of Mehraj. “We vehemently oppose the imposing of UAPA on media persons,” the powerful club said in a tweet. “The misuse of this draconian law by NIA in randomly arresting Irfan Mehraj, a journalist from Kashmir ominously points towards a violation of freedom of speech and expression. We demand his immediate release.”

The Editor’s Guild of India (EGI) has also expressed their concern over the arrest. The “space for media freedom has progressively eroded in Kashmir”, said the Editors Guild of India on Wednesday.

The Guild has voiced ‘deep concern’ over the ‘excessive use’ of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) against journalists, citing the recent arrest of Irfan Mehraj, a Kashmir-based journalist, by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).”

In a statement, the Guild reported that on March 20th, Irfan received a call from an investigator who asked him to come to the local NIA office in Srinagar for a brief meeting. However, after his arrival, he was arrested and later transferred to Delhi. According to the Guild, Irfan was charged under the draconian UAPA and was previously summoned to Delhi in relation to a case on “NGO terror funding”, to which he cooperated with the NIA’s investigation.

The NIA, in its press note, alleged that Irfan was a ‘close associate’ of the Kashmiri human rights defender Khurram Parvez.

Mehbooba Mufti, President Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir also criticized the NIA’s actions. “While conmen are given a free run in Kashmir, journalists like Irfan Mehraj are arrested for doing their duty by speaking the truth,” Ms Mufti said. She criticised the abuse of “draconian laws like UAPA” and their constant use to ensure punishment through the process itself.

The arrest of Kashmiri journalist Irfan Mehraj was also condemned by Amnesty International India.

“The arrest of Kashmiri journalist Irfan Mehraj under terror charges is a travesty,” said Aakar Patel, chair of the board at Amnesty International India, in a statement. “The arrest is yet another instance of the long-drawn repression of human rights and the crackdown on media freedoms and civil society in the region of Jammu and Kashmir. The stifling of the rights to freedom of expression and association continue unabated in Kashmir.”

Patel also expressed concern over the criminalization of human rights work, stating that “Human rights defenders such as Irfan Mehraj should be encouraged and protected, not persecuted. He must be immediately released. The repression must stop. Criminalization of legitimate human rights work is extremely alarming and the authorities must put an end to this immediately.” Amnesty International has termed the arrest as “yet another crackdown on media freedom in Jammu and Kashmir.”

Expressing profound apprehension, Mary Lawlor, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, also stated her deep concern regarding the detention of Irfan.

“I’m deeply concerned about the Kashmiri HRD and journalist @IrfanMeraj. He was called to come to the @NIA_India office in Srinagar and arrested in a 2020 case, accused of serious offences. I call for his immediate release,” Mary Lawlor tweeted.

It is worth noting that Irfan was taken into custody by the NIA in Srinagar on March 20, on charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Irfan, who is the founder of Wande Magazine, presently serves as a senior editor at TwoCircles.net. His works have been published by The Indian ExpressAl JazeeraHimal SouthasianDW, and TRT World.
